5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
"It was a little scary, a little funny, and easy to read" said my son Toby, aged 6.5, after reading this excellent book. He also says there were only about ten words he did not know. The illustrations are good and they do not give the story away -- Toby had to read the words. Toby says "don't give up!".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for early reading
This is a very enjoyable pirate story for beginning readers or for us parents to read to our kids. It is about kids of pirates that go to school every day just like toehr kids, only they go in a school bus painted row boat to a giant pirate ship/public school. The lessons they teach are backwards to our own morals and not fair, as the kids are to be greedy and not share, and worse yet to fight when they have disputes. But these rules dont work when it is treasure hunt day on the spooky island. Although each boy claims to have found the treasure first, they quickly learn tha if they are to survice, they must ingore the pirate rules and instead cooperate, share, help out, and trust each other. Wonderful story, I highly reccommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining introduction to Egyption Gods, for kids
Beautifully illustrated children's book. Gives basics of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, ancient Eryptian beliefs in afterlife, mummies, pyramids, and more. Great for kids, with or without a trip to the museum!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start for Kids
My young daughter has gotten into mythology and ancient religion and this is one of the few books I've found geared towards the young reader. It contains a lot of good beginner information about the Gods/Goddesses of Egypt. I highly recommend this book for the Level 2 reader.

I learned a lot about wolves from this book. And the pictures are sooooo cute! It is my favorite! I would get it if I were you!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kids Love It!!
This is an intriguing, engaging little tale about a baby wolf who learns how to howl and become part of the pack. The writer, Batten, writes in a lovely, simple way that seems to anticipate the child's next, inevitable question. The story is well augmented by the illustrations which are both pleasing to the eye and informative. A fun, excellent read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Baby Wolf not just for six year olds
A simply lovely book that both my three year old daughter and I both enjoyed reading. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not appropriate for the little ones
The violent themes in this book are a bit rough for the 3-4 year olds. When looking for early readers, I would try to make it age appropriate and not trying to keep true to the greek mythology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Swan's cut paper artwork tells the story of Pegasus
I have read three All Aboard Reading books dealing with classical mythology illustrated by the cut paper artwork of Susan Swan, and from an artistic standpoint this is clearly the best of the bunch. Some of Swan's three-dimensional efforts are simply outstanding."The Flying Horse: The Story of Pegasus" is told by Jane B. Mason, who adapts this myth from Hesiod, does neglect to provide the names of the hero (Bellerophon) and the monster (Chimaera). However, this is a Level 1 (Preschool-Grade 1) book and there are students who are much older who are not going to be able to get their tongues around those ancient names, so these omissions are perfectly understandable.Young students will read all about a wonderful flying horse that helped a hero slay a horrible monster, which is seen in Swan's most beautiful illustration in the book.5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly illustrated version of the story of Pegasus
In "The Flying Horse: The Story of Pegasus," Jane B. Mason retells a classic story from Greek mythology to beginning readers. Her simple prose is accompanied by Susan Swan's spectacular illustrations. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning readers!
This book was perfect for our Kindergartener who is just learning to read. Pal the Pony kept her interest and motivated her to finish the book. The text is challenging but not frustrating: Plenty of easy to recognise sight words, plus longer words to sound-it-out. Our daughter was so excited to be able to read most of a book herself that she wants to order more. This title would appeal to boys or girls equally.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Snake Hair"...a great book
This book, illustrated brilliantly in an amazing form, follows the Greek Myth of the snaked-haired Gorgon, 'Medusa'. But the story doesn't start there. You see, Medusa was once a beautiful young girl...she upset the goddess, Athene, who punished her in return. The young man Perseus then sets out to find the Gorgon and kill her, this is their story - in a form that young children can follow. A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of Perseus and Medesa told with cut paper pictures
The cut paper illustrations by Susan Swan are the chief charm of this All Aboard Reading Level 2 (Grades 1-3) book written by Stephanie Spinner."Snake Hair" is, as the sub-title indicates, "The Story of Medusa," who in this version is a vain young girl who makes the terrible mistake of saying that her hair is more beautiful than that of Athena. The angry goddess change's Medusa's hair to snakes and makes her so ugly her look will turn any living thing that looks at her to stone. What follows is the story of the hero Perseus, who is aided by the gods to fulfill his destiny. The illustrations here by Swan are absolutely exquisite and I find it incredible that these were actually cut by hand and are not computer generated (look at the chains on Andromeda, for example).Teachers who use this book in class should be prepared for young students wanting to try their hand at this particular art form (I could never, ever do this).5-0 out of 5 stars Classic story, excellent illustrations
Medusa is one of the most memorable characters from all of Greek mythology. "Snake Hair: The Story of Medusa" is an effective retelling of her story. Stephanie Spinner's simple text (geared towards 1st to 3rd grade readers) is well complemented by Susan Swan's fine illustrations. Author Spinner thoughtfully provides pronunciation guides for the mythological names.Read more

I loved this when I was little and now my kids love it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything from Daniel Kirk is worth buying...
I've recently been researching children's books to purchase for my K-3 classrooms. Daniel Kirk's books are gorgeous to look at. They must be picked up and read. The colorful illustrations are irresistable. Kirk's story has elements and wording of the original tale, but he puts his own updated unique twist on the classic. The rhyming text rolls off the tongue. This is a good picture book for the K-3 crowd.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truely "fractured" Humpty!
I am reading this story to all K-2 students in the library at my school. The teachers and the kids love it. The story in rhyme is a hoot. It's gotplenty of action and yet is thoughtful and has similarities to the originalrhyme. The kids liked comparing this to the original and provoked us intoreciting the original as well. The illustrations are also bold, bright andreally cute. Humpty has the look of a child rather than a wierd egg person.Daniel Kirk has created an exceptional retelling. I highly recommend thisbook! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for beginning readers!
My son just finished kindergarten. He knows all of his letter sounds, but they didn't touch the long vowel sounds before the summer break. This is a good beginning reader, as even the tougher words like "drencher", and "splat", can be sounded out. There are some words that I read for my son, as they didn't follow the rules, or they had the long vowel sounds.Reading is somewhat of a "chore" for my son, so this book was attractive to both of us because of the comical situations and boy appeal! The story line centers around a small boy and his huge water blaster.A perfect summer read for the kindergartener or First grader. ... Read more
