5-0 out of 5 stars Oh Amelia...We Love You So!
This book in the series finds Amelia Bedelia and her employers going camping...as always Amelia's literal minded approach means lots of misunderstanding between what the Rodger's tell her to do and what Amelia does.As always, Amelia Bedelia does EXACTLY as she is told (let's hit the road leaves Amelia hitting the road with a stick and I think we can all guess what happens when it's time to pitch the tent)!!In the end, its Amelia's big heart (and extraordinary cooking ability) that saves the day (as usual) when the Rodger's get fed up with all the misunderstandings!!Young readers will love to hear this story read out loud, but it's also a find book for readers just starting out!Amelia, I think, will be around for generations to come, the stories are simple, but hilarious and the illustrations are just darling!Always a good way to get a discussion going about how we use words and how a word or phrase can have several meanings...plus it's just plain fun!

Editorial Review

Amelia Bedelia is a housekeeper who takes her instructions quiteliterally. Reading the list of chores that her employer has left her, Amelia begins with "Dust the furniture." How odd, Amelia thinks to herself. "At my house we undust the furniture." Nonetheless, she dutifully locates the "Dusting Powder" in the bathroom, and proceeds to sprinkle it all over the living-room furniture and floor. Next she is asked to "Draw the drapes when the sun comes in." So of course, Amelia sits down with a sketchpad and gives it her best shot. Children love reading about the antics of silly Amelia Bedelia for myriad reasons. It's anearly reader book, so children in primary grades can take satisfaction in reading the book on their own. But, even more thrilling, children who are 6 and older can successfully interpret the figurative meaning behind most adult idioms. Being told to "keep an eye on the cat," for example, might compel some preschoolers to stick their eyeballs on a cat's face, eliciting peals of laughter from know-it-all grownups. But older children know better, and they love the fact that they know better. Young readers will find this bumblingly charming, eager-to-please housekeeper as irresistible as Amelia Bedelia's employers do. (Ages 6 and older) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We Love You Amelia Bedelia!
This is surly a kids favorite since I was a little girl!We join Amelia Bedelia as she starts her first day of work for the Rodgers. They rush off shortly after she arrives, but they've left her a list of things to do.Should be a snap, as all the tasks are simple and clearly stated...but that's what you think...Amelia Bedelia begins completing each chore in quite a literal fashion...drawing the drapes and much, much more!Younger kids (1-4) will like the silliness of it and beginner readers and more savvy grade schoolers (5-8) will like that's it's simple and clever/silly too!I recommend it without reservation! I'm sure Amelia will be with us, teaching fine lessons about the words we use and the many means they can have for generations to come!

4-0 out of 5 stars Draw the curtain
A great, witty book that my 4-year old loved.Made her think about the different meanings of words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia
In a language where so many words and phrases have multiple meanings, there's no doubt that the literal-minded Amelia can be kept busy through many a book. The fact that it's funny is just the thing to get young readers hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Won't Be Disappointed
Amelia Bedelia, the extremely literal housekeeper who is adored by children all over the world turns 40 this year. Created in 1963 by Peggy Parish, Amelia Bedelia has amused and entertained children of all ages ever since. Amelia is a very literal housekeeper, and if not for her exceptional skill in the kitchen baking goodies, it is hard to think that she would be employed at all! Her literalness is the root of many adventures and the cause of great hi-jinx and amusement.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book as a kid
amelia bedelia is teaching a classroom but she does everything wrong but in such a funny way! Calling the roll, practicing a "play", "painting" pictures, planting "bulbs" and literally doing math problems with apples has neverbeen funnier than in this book! Read it and you'll see why

5-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia is a Teacher now, Oh my!
One day, while Amelia Bedelia, the housekeeper who literally takes everything literally, was cleaning, the phone rang. It was Mrs. Rogers, calling from the airport. She was supposed to meet the new teacher, but the plane was late. To further complicate matters the phone was out at the school. Mrs. Rogers wants Amelia to go by the school and tell them the teacher will not be there today. Amelia attempts to do just that, but the principal mistakes her for the new teacher and that's when all the fun starts. Amelia Bedelia teaching a classroom full of children, imagine that. Well, my almost three-year-old son Devon and I imagine it all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia is the BEST!
When I was a kid, I wore Merry Christmas Amelia Bedelia out!I probably couldn't tell you much about the plot, but anybody who's ever read an Amelia Bedelia book knows that it's all about her doing everything wrong! The only thing that sticks with me is the picture of Amelia stuffing the Christmas stockings with turkey stuffing, which to this day I find hilarious.I don't know what it is about this one particular story, maybe it's because it's the only Amelia Bedelia book I ever read, but I love it just the same.I my mind, it ranks up there with Charlotte's Web and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; it's just one of those funny, timeless books that fed my lifelong passion for reading and writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Merry Christmas Amelia Bedelia
This book is really good for children of all ages.It shows you that you have to explain things in detail, because someone might take you literally. The writer is comical and serious at the ssame time which is a good combonation. This book also shows that you can mess up and things can still come out right.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could write like this!
Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia by Herman Parish, like all of his Amelia Bedelia books, is hysterically funny.Parish's use of expressions confuse Mr. Rogers' maid, Amelia Bedelia, throughout the entire story.Poor, silly, Amelia Bedelia never realizes how confused she really is.She takes everything anyone says literally, so when her boss Mr. Rogers says "jump in the car", she thinks that he actually means to sit in the car and jump.4-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia and Dr. Horton's impatient patients
I do not think I will ever get tired of Amelia Bedelia, the literal-minded housekeeper. If anything, I am rather surprised that it has taken this long for her to invade a doctor's office. The results might be predictable, but that does not make them any less enjoyable as Amelia Bedelia deals with hoarse throats, drawing blood, and the proverbial pain in the neck. However, if there is one thing our lady of literality knows, it is the right way to treat patients, especially when they become impatient patients.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Making Mistakes
This book is about the humor of taking things literally. Amelia Bedelia goes from job to job making mistakes because she does things so literally. Once, she saw a sign on a dress shop that said HELP WANTED. She went in and the store owner asked could she sew and Amelia say yes that she was handy with a needle. The owner showed her some dresses that had been marked and asked Amelia to shorten them. Amelia looked at the dresses and said "I don't need to sew to do this".
5-0 out of 5 stars Come Back, Amelia Bedelia (I Can Read Book 2)
This book helped my seven year old get into reading... I'm very happy with this purchase...

5-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia is Job Hunting, Look Out!
When Amelia Bedelia, the housekeeper who literally takes everything literally, brings Mrs. Rogers her cereal with coffee, the woman takes one look at those flakes floating around in her coffee cup and fires Amelia before she gets a chance to fill her creme puffs. Amelia, one who always sees the bright side of life, sets out to find a job. First she goes to work in a beauty shop, but when she's told to pin up a customer's hair and does it with pins from her purse, she is fired. Then she finds work in a dress shop as a seamstress, but she shortens all the dresses with a scissors and is fired. As a file clerk, she stamps on the letters with her feet when told to stamp them and files papers with a fingernail file when told to file them. And when she goes to work for a doctor, well, you'll just have to read this book to your child to find out what mischief she gets into there. Fortunately she makes a terrific cream puff, because when she remembers she forgot to fill them and goes by the Rogers', they hire her back, because those cream puffs are just oh so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Party is Not All Wet...Despite the Hose!
Amelia Bedelia is always a simple, fun and entertaining read!In this volume, we find Amelia and her cousin in charge of setting up a surprise wedding shower for a friend of her employer Mrs. Rogers. In typical Amelia Bedelia fashion, the literal meaning of the requests and orders given and the intended meaning are two different things entirely...it's always fun to watch kids register that the words in the story really do mean two different things (like filling a bowl with cut flowers...simple, yet taken literally, you get something entirely different from it...this is the joy of Parish's writing).Parish always does it with just the right amount of frivolity and light-hearted humor that it's impossible not to love Amelia Bedelia despite all the trouble she causes!I love the Amelia Bedelia series as a read aloud because it's so much fun, but the Amelia Bedelia series is also ideal for young readers, especially those just starting to read on their own! There are not a lot of words on each page, but what is there is easy to understand and conveyed succinctly and with humor and the illustrations are perfectly matched to the text (with a slightly old fashioned feel to them). You just can't go wrong with these books!

1-0 out of 5 stars Rain on the Parade
Wedding Shower! As soon as the word shower is mentioned, trust Amelia Bedelia, the world's most foolish maid to get out the hose and drench everybody. It's a wonder she was allowed anywhere near the party.

5-0 out of 5 stars really really funny
amelia bedelia is very genuine in the sense that she just wants to make people happy but she ends up taking everything literally and doing just the opposite but in a funny way. She "staked" the beans, fed the chickens "scraps"...of cloth! And made "tea" cake that everyone raved over for instance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great entertaining book!
This is a very funny book and is especially good to be read to toddlers. When Amelia is asked to stake the beans, she ties steak to them. When she's asked to make a tea cake, she makes one with tea in it.It offers a very good example of how what we say makes all the difference in the world, and whether or not what we are saying is what is being understood. When Amelia is asked to weed the garden, she thinks she's supposed to add more weeds, not "unweed it" as she states in the story. It's a little long - about 50 pages in my edition so it's a little much for a youngster to sit through but if they can do it like mine can, it is a great book to teach.I highly recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a really good book
I think that Amelia Bedelia Helps Out is a good book. Amelia Bedelia is funny. She does everything the wrong way. She feeds the chickens with cloth instead of chicken food. She also makes her Tea cake the wrong way. She didn't pull the right weeds in the garden. I like it because Amelia Bedelia like to help out and I do too. ... Read more

Amelia Bedelia might never learn to not to take things literally, but then Mr. Rogers seems to keep forgetting what makes his housekeeper so unique, so he is not exactly showing a high learning curve either. In "Good Driving, Amelia Bedelia," things start off innocent enough. It is Amelia Bedelia's birthday and she is going to go visit her cousin Alcolu.Mr. Rogers offers to let her drive the family car, but Amelia Bedelia has not driven in years so he decides to see if her driving is as good as the picture on her drivers license.Of course, this turns out to be something of a mistake.4-0 out of 5 stars Good Driving, Amelia Bedelia
"Good Driving, Amelia Bedelia" is a story about a girl named Amelia Bedelia who wants to visit her cousin Alcolu so she can take a day off and rest on her birthday.Friends of hers, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers allow her to use their car to get to her cousin's house. But first Mr. Rogers takes Amelia out to make sure she still knows how to drive.Along the way, Amelia keeps misinterpreting Mr. Rogers's directions, like pushing on the horn of a cow instead of honking the car horn and misinterpreting a fork in the road as an actual kitchen utensil lying in the road.Soon their car gets a flat tire, but luckily a man in a towtruck happens to pass by and gives them a ride home where a party is waiting for Amelia.3-0 out of 5 stars Good Driving, Amelia Bedilia ~ Herman Parish
This book is one that shows how a lot of things can be muisunderstood. It explains how people can screw up a direction, or just what someone si trying to tell them.It also teaches that when you are drving or doing some other important task, you need to concentrate, and make sure you know what you are doing. This book is full of surprises about what happened to Amelia Bedilia when Mr. Rodgers took her driving.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Really! Thank You, Amelia Bedelia!
Yes, we always enjoy Amelia's adventure's and in this volume, we find Mrs. Rodgers rushing about getting read for Great-Aunt Myra visit. As usual, she gives Amelia a list of things to do while she's out and about (make a jelly roll, strip the sheets, check Mr. Rodgers shirts) and off she goes fulfilling those requests in the absolutely literal way that only Amelia Bedelia can!Kids will be amused to no end as Amelia tries to roll jelly around on the counter and paints checks on Mr. Rodgers shirts...watch out for her spot removal...it's a doozy!Amelia Bedelia books are a fine way to introduce children to the concept that what we say isn't always EXACTLY what we mean!Great for read aloud stores for kids age 1-5 as well as a fine beginning reader book for ages 5-7.Kids of all ages will love the hilarity of how Amelia gets the job done!Another hit with my kids!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I love the delicious "cakes" she makes and how she misunderstands everything and takes it literally. I was laughing so hard when she served mr and mrs rogers a "chicken dinner" of cracked corn and a "sponge" cake!!! too hilarious

1-0 out of 5 stars Atonal Amelia
Amelia's trademark is taking all directions literally without applying reason. This time she has the insane notion that she's going to play in the school band.Naturally she bollixes up the works and the show ends on a sour note - literally, thanks to Amelia's blundering miscalculations.Since baking is her strength, perhaps the conductor will relent if he eats some of her desserts.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book!
If you're familiar with the Amelia books, this is a continuation of the zany antics of the gal who just "takes things literally."In this edition, Amelia, poor thing, just cannot get it together to play in the school orchestra. She tries and by the end of the story, finds herself rolling into a bass drum and stealing the show. You know it's going to be band when the story begins with Amelia being instructed to pick up the conductor.Well, she tries to "pick up the conductor" of the local train but says, "I tried to pick him up but he just preferred to walk."And, on it goes from there. The guest conductor finally arrives and Amelia decides to help him out with the rehearsal and the performance. The conductor finally gets Amelia locked into a room and instructs her not to come out until her cue but well, she misses her cue and runs into the bass drum. It's a very cute story about misconceptions and how we should all clarify what we mean.Honestly, if we all took literally what we said then we would all be Amelia Bedelias.Great story, we have to read this one quite a bit in our house at bedtime.Very funny stuff! ...
