5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful from beginning to end
As a parent, this may very well be my favorite bedtime story.Don't judge the book based on the TV show-- it is much better!Max and Ruby are making birthday cakes for Grandma.Max is making an earthworm cake but Ruby wants to make an angel surprise cake with rasbery fluff frosting.Despite Ruby's increasingly restrictive instructions, Max keeps knocking her ingredients off the table, and Ruby keeps sending him to the store with a shopping list for replacements.Max wants red hot marshmellow squirters to top off his cake, and his attempts to communicate this to the grocer make up the heart of the story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bunny Cakes
This is an excellent picture book for young children. The story line is simple and easy for kids to connect with. Many children have siblings and can relate to Max and Ruby. The illustrations are heart warming and draw the reader in. Rosemary Wells repitition of events within the plot make her an excellent storyteller. Bunny Cakes is an endearing story.

My children are Max and Ruby(practically) and this is our favorite. A friend's daughter even demanded a Max cake for her birthday complete with gummy worms. This is a favorite of my 3 &5 year old. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Bedtime Story
My 2-year-old son, Max, LOVES this book. He insists we read it every night, immediately followed by _Max's Toys_. The touch-and-feel areas are very small, although it doesn't seem to bother him. He just loves to open and close the window.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOODNIGHT MAX
It's a very sweet, short story-good for 2's and 3's. A great book? No. A cute story with two rabbits? Yes!

4-0 out of 5 stars You have to be a fan
I bought this book after reading all the great reviews. It is a nice book, bright colors, lots of attention to detail, silly story line, but I didn't think the areas for the child to feel were large enough. The sticky candy in Max's pajamas is just about the size of a child's fingertip, the lace curtain is just a thin slip of fabric, the lightning is a skinny zig-zag of foil and the "cookie crumbs" sandpaper is only about a quarter-inch high. There are other touch-and-feel books that provide a much larger exploratory surface.Still, this book does contain a good variety (sticky candy, rough crumbs, fur, smelly sock, etc.)I'm not sure why, but that smelly sock always seems to be such a hit! ... Editorial Review

Max is an irresistibly cute but persistent little bunny who wants whathe wants when he wants it--any parent with an active toddler will relate. And like most little kids, Max thinks the grass is always greener on the other side; to be more precise, he's sure the toy someone else is playing with is much more interesting. Max's interaction du jour is with his older sister, Ruby, who has a particularly attractive doll. Of course, Max wants that doll and will go to any lengths to get it. Who do you think will win this one? A funny tale of how children give and take in play, Read more

This a good book for any child of all ages to read. I am only 15 and I love Max. I watch the show whenever I can. I am proof that you can never be too old for things that are considered to be only for children. 5-0 out of 5 stars an adorable book/series
I love reading Max's dragon shirt to my son, Maxwell. We loved that all these books have his name in them! They are cute and fun, and I enjoy reading them too!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter's Favorite
This is another cute story by Rosemary Wells. As expected my daughter who's a huge Max and Ruby fan likes it, but I was surprised when it became he favorite book and is read every night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable New Max and Ruby Book
At the request of their Mother, Ruby decides to take young Max to the mall to buy him a new pair of pants. However, Ruby quickly stumbles upon a collection of beautiful dresses that she just has to try on. So she heads to the dressing room, young Max in tow. But while she's trying on dresses, unbeknownst to her, Max has wandered out of the dressing rooms and into the Boys Department, where he finds a fantastic green t-shirt with a picture of a fire-breathing dragon on the front. He wants it more than anything, yet Ruby insists that there is not enough money for both new pants for him, and a new shirt. But since Ruby is trying dresses on, Max sees no harm in trying the t-shirt on himself. Soon Max is picked up by two police officers, wearing the dragon shirt, which is now covered in ice cream, and big sis Ruby has no choice but to purchase the shirt for the little rascal.

my two year old loves Max.This was a wonderful addition to our collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars As always Max and Ruby books are a joy
This book is as cute as the other Max and Ruby books. You can't go wrong with these stories!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a darling book!
This book is a great tool to use to help kids clean up their rooms. It is really cute, watching Ruby order Max around to get him to help her clean his room and, typical of curious little boys, Max's room is filled with all sorts of neat "boy things."Like the year-old Easter egg hidden in his underwear drawer (which he shoves into his pocket while his sister isn't looking), ants from his ant farm running loose (they get into the pocket too), gooey bubble making stuff, old chewing gum, etc. It's just so cute to see how big Max's pocket is growing with all the neat "stuff" he's hiding from Ruby because he's afraid that she'll throw it all away. This is certainly a must read for nothing else but the cuteness of the story. It reminded me of Linus and Lucy from Peanuts when I first read it, but Ruby isn't quite as "stern" as Lucy. This one is read all the time in our house and a definite keeper! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sticker Book
My 3 yr old son loves this book! you can take the stickers off and put them on another page!He spends about 1 hr each day just having me read the story and put the correct stickers in a different place each time.

5-0 out of 5 stars great sticker fun for toddlers and preschoolers
For a recent trip we bought a large number of sticker and activity books for our toddler. These in the Sticker Stories series were very popular and helped make the trip a pleasant one.3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I purchased this for my 5yr old son who loves Max & Ruby.I did not read it first, but I wish I had.He loved putting the stickers on the pages, but was disappointed that the stories were not the same as his books. For example, the birthday cake Ruby makes for Grandma is not the sameas in the story(strawberry instead of raspberry). Also, there is too many stickers! He could not fit them all on the clean up page, and they ended up all over the page.I look forward to more Max & Ruby, but I will make sure next time I read any future sticker books first. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a fun ABC storybook
This book has a fun story to go along with the ABCs.My three year-old begs to read it and loves the idea of ants in your pants. It's a really fun book for both toddlers and parents who get bored of standard "A is for Apple, B is for Boy, etc." books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trust Rosemary Wells to make an ABC book a real story!
It's always a challenge to make ABC books into a story---it can often seem so forced to include all the letters. Not here! The tale of Max's escaped ant farm ants includes every letter seamlessly, and at the same time is a delight to read!We get to revisit some favorite Max and Ruby themes---Max taking a bath, Max spilling things, Ruby being bossy and Max outsmarting her wordlessly---lots of fun!The ABC theme is not forced---you can read this without even mentioning to your child it's an ABC book, as I did with my almost 2 year old. Each page has a few words highlighted that start with the letter featured, and once my daughter is older, I will point that out to her, but for now, we just enjoyed seeing what Max and the ants were up to!Ants are a great choice as a theme, as my daughter like many toddlers is fascinated with them, and watches them outside every chance she gets.
4-0 out of 5 stars A new favorite
As a grandmother of 4 children under the age of 5, Max's ABC was a must-have. When they were young, I read the Max & Ruby books to my children, and they were always favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Max Mischief
What should one eat for breakfast?Ask Ruby, wise for her seven years. But three year old Max doesn't want to eat healthy - bring on the ice cream!Anyone who has dealt with headstrong toddlers can relate to Ruby's woes. While Rosemary Wells never shows the parents of these delightful bunny siblings, their sweet, indulgent Grandma appears as Max's partner in crime. The Max and Ruby books are such a hit in our house that my 3.5-year-old daughter renamed her younger sister "Max"- and she answers to it!While we saw this particular story first on TV's Nick Jr., both my girls request the book version over and over.I also recommend the new book Ruby's Tea for Two. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Colorful Splash of Laughter!
My daughters - a preschooler and a toddler - gravitate to Max and Ruby like magnets. The board book Ruby's Rainy Day proved no exception.Shiny foil raindrops splash across the book cover.Lively rainbow colors brighten the ten sturdy pages inside. The story itself is an abridged version of a comical episode on TV's Nickelodeon.Little brother Max wants to go outside to play "Baseball!" Big sister Ruby insists they both don layer after layer of rain gear first.Your child can learn colors while laughing at the antics of these lovable rabbits.

5-0 out of 5 stars My little boy loves it.
Maybe it's the sparkly raindrops, maybe it's the vibrant colors, or maybe it's the size... at 7 months of age it's hard to tell what it is my little boy loves about this book. One thing's for sure, he loves it!When he's old enough I expect the repetition in the dialogue will be a winner and the themes featuring color and sequence will keep him fascinated.Me, I love the little joke at the end and of course watching his delight in this book. ... Editorial Review

There's something fishy going on at Grandma Bunny's birthday party. Rubyis positive she's only invited seven stuffed-toy guests, but every time shecounts, there seems to be one more. "That's funny, Max," Ruby says to heryounger brother. "All the guests are in their seats. But there are only 2 chairsleft for Grandma, you, and me." And off she goes to find another chair.Meanwhile, Max has his own ideas about who should be invited to the party. Canhis Jellyball Shooter Spider, Can't-Sit-Up-Slug, and Ear-Splitter Space Cadetmingle nicely with Ruby's Rapunzel, Tooth Fairy, Mrs. Quack, and the rest?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We Love Max!
Max and Ruby are my new favorite book characters in books for younger children. My kindergarten students love the short text, colorful illustrations, and of course, mischievous little Max. After reading the Easter book "Max's Chocolate Chicken" all Fall and Winter, I'm finally getting them some more Max books! 5-0 out of 5 stars Kids LOVE this story
I am rating this a 5-star book from the kids point of view.Kids just love the story, memorizing the names of all the toys that attend the bunny party, etc...My kids (a 4 year old boy and a 1.5 year old girl) drag out stuffed toys and a teaset at least three times a week to have a bunny party of their own.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Max Book
The Max books are among my favorites for small children, and this one is no exception. While it explores concepts like "over," "under," etc., at the same time it includes interesting illustrations and a story line that preschoolers and their parents can relate to (Max is afraid of his birthday present -- a windup dragon -- at first, but after running away from it for several pages, in the end says, "Again!").In all of the Max books that we have read so far, the author incorporates amusing common childhood traits into an entertaining story that everyone can relate to.This book gets my vote for one that parents and children will enjoy reading together, over and over.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Max's Birthday" not really about birthdays
I was disappointed with "Max's Birthday" because it wasn't about birthdays at all: it was all about Max getting a toy lobster that he was afraid of. Other than a wrapped present on the cover and a party hat and birthday-cake clothes throughout, a toddler would have a hard time knowing that this is a book about birthdays. When I bought this after a search of the Baby/Preschool category, looking under the keyword "birthday," my hope had been to obtain a couple of good books to help my two toddlers understand the concept of turning 2 and celebrating the event. To me, this just didn't cut it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute, Cute, Cute - a review of "Ruby's Beauty Shop"
Okay, this might not make the top ten list of every little boy, but it is a really cute book that my daughter (6) and her little brother (just turned 4) like. The artistry and expressions is quintessential Wells, as is her word choice. There is just no one else I can think of who would use the phrase "blonde bombshell wig" in a children's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just gorgeous!
My 3 yr old and 4 year old took instantly to this book --especially Max's iconoclastic take on how to play beauty shop "his way" and the blonde bombshell wig. Grandma always makes a wise choice at the end of these stories, but the real fun is in the illustrations, the expressions on the bunnies' faces, and Rosemary Wells' understated sense of humor. The whole series is fun for the kids and even the adults who have to read the story to them nightly. Both kids are enchanted and now playing "beauty shop" is a standard pastime for them.If you like this one, you'll also enjoy Bunny Party and Bunny Money.

Editorial Review

How we love Max--the mischievous toddler rabbit who is often battlingwits and wills with his bossy-boots older sister Ruby. Now it's time for thesiblings' Easter egg hunt! Just as the festivities are about to begin, asecretive Easter Bunny places a huge chocolate chicken in the birdbath. "Ilove you," Max innocently declares to the edible chicken he covets. "Wait Max," warns Ruby. "First we must go on an egg hunt. If you find the most eggs then you get the chocolate chicken." But Max, who is still young enough to be distracted by mud puddles andmarching ants, can't possibly focus on finding a single egg. When it becomesobvious that Ruby has collected the most (if not all) of the Easter eggs, Maxtakes drastic measures--as the youngest sibling often will--and steals thechicken. Rosemary Wells's expressive, giggle-funny illustrations (along with the board-book format) make this a perfect Easter story for toddlers as well aspreschoolers, who will delight in Max's blatant misbehavior and relish theinevitable happy ending. 2-0 out of 5 stars This is great for kids...
if they're smoking something. I got this as a discard from the library, and decided it might be suitable for the library in my preschool class. The pictures are cute and yet, disturbing as well. The story makes no sense, and the children did not really enjoy any part of it. I left it in their little library for months, and they never looked at it. This story is simply too bizarre for children, although I'm sure it's great for adults after enjoying certain herbal refreshments. This teacher gives it a "D".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book was so cute!It reminded me so much of me and my one sister.I used to always find her candy and sneak a piece or two (she took forever to eat hers!).My sisters and I all love each other and we're extremely close.Kids will be kids and have their little antics--that's what gives us times to look back on.It is also what makes us so close to each other. This book is one we read every single day during the Easter Season!

3-0 out of 5 stars Love it or leave it.
I think the previous reviewer (tabris02) has given good advice. This book will either resonate with you or it won't.We received it as a gift and were a bit puzzled by it, asking grandma, "What kind of lesson are you trying to teach our toddler?"The bulk of the story was cute, as Max mucked about in the yard while Ruby single-mindedly found every Easter egg.But the ending didn't sit well with me...selfishness with no remorse or consequences or even awareness of his sister's feelings.Years later, with three kids, I realize that siblings will learn to be competitive and selfish even without seeing those traits demonstrated in books. So, I've lightened up a bit.But I still don't find myself reaching for this book on our shelf.Of the Max and Ruby stories, I prefer Bunny Cakes.Another of our favorite Rosemary Wells books is Fritz and the Mess Fairy (Fritz is a slob who during one amazing night tries to make it up to his family by cleaning the entire house and fixing them breakfast in bed.In the process, he makes a huge mess again in the kitchen...but his efforts to improve himself and express his love to his family are very endearing!). ...
