2-0 out of 5 stars This is a Board Book Not a Hardcover
I was very disappointed in the description of this book provided by Amazon. It is touted as a Hardcover Book on the website, but when it arrived, it was a board book.My daugher loves Ruby & Max, but I try to get the hardcover editions as they are a little meatier. This one is below her level.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son is Max
And I love Max and Ruby! This book was a great buy for me to give my son. When we read it to him he has to sleep with it. He can relate to Max since they are pretty much on the same wavelength.4-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not necessarily a bedtime book!
Doggone if Ruby doesn't try hard to help Max get to sleep, but nothing seems to work! Keep an eye out for the red rubber elephant in each picture.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Max and Ruby's Midas Misses the Point
Up until now I thought I liked all of Rosemary Wells' stories... but Midas is simply awful. Not only is some of the artwork gruesome, but the story fails to deliver anything close to the original message of how gold (or make-substitution-here) is not the end-all of life.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Enchanting Rewrite of a Classic Tale"
"Hello, Beautiful!" whispers three-year-old Max to his strawberry cupcake. Seven-year old sister Ruby steps in to foil his nighttime snack raid.In Greek mythology, King Midas had a golden touch. In Ruby's bedtime story, little prince Midas has a sweet touch - or tooth. His expressive "laser-beam" eyes transform yucky veggies into delicious desserts. But he zaps his unsuspecting family into sweets as well.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute, Creepy, Classic
My son, age five, and daughter, age three, have enjoyed the Pandora's Box title for over a year. They listen attentively right from the start when Ruby expressly forbids Max from tampering with her jewelry box.Anticipation is high when Ruby segues into the story of 'sneaking, peeking' Pandora. Ruby's version of the classic Greek myth keeps them on the edge of their seats. They can easily imagine how Pandora feels as she opens the box in her mother's room. Heart rates escalate as swarms of insects emerge. Relief finally sets in in the form of a spider spinning an enormous web. The kids remain intrigued right to the end when Pandora's mother returns home wearing insect jewelry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun read-aloud about siblings
To illustrate her point, Ruby reads a story about Pandora's Box to her younger brother Max.Terrific illustrations dramatize the allure of the box and the consequence of disobedience.Young listeners just crack up at Max's flippant responses to his sister's interrogations!Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Board Book that is definitely not Boring!
Rosemary Wells has done it again!Max's New Suit playfully explores a simple concept that is familiar to toddlers and their grown ups.Combining a simple text with her extremely expressive illustrations, Ms Wells tellsthe story of brother and sister team, Max and Ruby.In this amusing tale,Max must get dressed in his new suit (which he hates!) to attend Ruby's teaparty.Despite Ruby's help, the precocious Max wants to do it himself andthis is where the story takes a delightful twist. My 6-month old Max lovesthe Max books and recognizes the Max and Ruby characters.Theillustrations and text are clear and colorful while complimenting eachother. This book holds his attention during our frequent readings and, Ibelieve, helps to foster his sense of humor and fun.Max's New Suit willkeep both child and reader entertained for reading after reading! It is anessential book for every baby's library (or, as Ms Wells might say, everyBunny's library). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Max
Ruby and Max's interactions are so simply stated, yet so representative of sibling and even parent/child relationships.Rosemary Wells makes me react (in this case, laugh) along with my child as we read about Ruby and Max's conversations and adventures.I consider that a sign of a good children's book....a truly shared experience.3-0 out of 5 stars Cute story, but taxing text.
Let me introduce Max, and his older sister Ruby if you are not already familiar with these endearing little bunnies.Max is generally the mischievous one, while big sister Ruby is helpful, but often bossy. In this short story Ruby attempts to teach Max some new words as his first, and only word is BANG.She starts with CUP, then try's POT, BROOM, FISH, EGG, CHAIR and finally APPLE.In the end, Max takes a big bite out of the apple and triumphantly declares it DELICIOUS!"MAX's First Word," is a charming account of brotherly and sisterly love, and teaches a few words too.I love that Max's first word is BANG, kid's love hearing, BANG, BANG, BANG.5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody's favorite book
This is absolutely my son's favorite book, and has been since he was about 11 months old. He will sort through all of his books, pick this one, and come toddling over to me-grinning from ear to ear-and sit down in my lap to have it read to him. The fun of it is, its particular brand of humor has not gotten old for me, either.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful tale, but awkward to read aloud.
Join Max and Ruby on a ride through UP, DOWN, and in BETWEEN.Max, the playful little bunny and his big sister Ruby are at it again in this charming little board book titled "MAX's Ride."Older sister Ruby stands on top of a hill holding the handle of a baby carriage (or shall I say "bunny" carriage) while little brother Max is seated inside primed for the ride of his life."GO! said Max.DOWN went Max.STOP said Ruby."Max flies OVER a bump, OUT of the carriage, and UP into the air.Ruby runs UNDER a clothesline in an attempt to catch him.Max sails BETWEEN two trees, slides back INTO the carriage, and crashes into a pile of newly fallen leaves, "STOP said Max."This is a delightful little tale about two mischievous bunnies, that teaches verbs and prepositions.4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful tale, but awkward to read aloud.

My fourteen month old daughter loves this book. She carries it around with her wanting it to be read to her all of the time. When you open the first page she shouts GO! (the first word on the first page). The pages have only a few words on them keeping my daughter's attention. The words are very descriptive and make this book very easy to animate. You can take your child along with Max on his ride as you go up, down, over and between-- all the while she is bouncing on your knee. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Where would messy Max be without his older sister Ruby?Certainly not very clean, as evidenced in this amusing tale of young Max's somewhat disastrous bath. Of course, Max is the kind of active bunny who wears everything he eats. As his sister tells him, "You're still hungry, Max, because your sandwich isn't in you, it's all over you." And while Ruby tries her best to clean him up, Max is not quite with the program. When he attempts to eat orange sherbet and grape juice in the bathtub, fascinating complications unfold. Will anyone come out clean in this one? This delightful story is just one in Rosemary Wells's series of eight sturdy Max board books--including Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute but confusing
This book was cute but in one way it was a little confusing.Max and Max's sister appear to be about the same size in most of the pictures so on a first read through I was confused as to why Max was talking in single words and his sister in full ten word fully grammatical sentences. Then it dawned on my that he was supposed to be a lot younger than she was? The pictures are cute, the story charming but I wish Max had been drawn as much smaller so that he was obviously a younger brother. It would have made more sense to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adorable tale about clean and dirty.
Laugh aloud with Max, as his big sister Ruby endeavors to give him a bath. Max, a typical little "boy" bunny has just finished eating his lunch, and as with most toddlers, half of his lunch is all over him rather than in his belly.Big sister Ruby decides Max needs a bath, so as he waits for the tub to fill, Max enjoys some orange sherbet, and a cup of grape juice. He decides his bath would be more fun eating the sherbet in the water, so as one can expect, the sherbet finds its way into the bathwater and Ruby must start over. The same thing happens with the grape juice; consequently Ruby decides to give Max a shower, "You're going in the shower to get CLEAN, said Ruby."The story ends with Max pointing at Ruby's dress saying, "DIRTY," because in her attempt to bathe her little brother, she accumulates bits of orange sherbet and grape juice all over her dress.Max's expression is priceless!5-0 out of 5 stars A rare toddler book that parents love
This is one of the Max board book series that also includes Max's Birthday, Max's Toys, andMax's Bedtime. They are supposedly intended for children from birth to age 2 or so. There are also several non-board books aboutMax(Max's Chocolate Chicken, and Bunny Money are my favorites) with longer stories designed for slightly older children.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Max is at it again!!
A great book for Max and Ruby fans! It's not too long with just a few sentences on each page and the illustrations are great! It holds my 3 year olds attention all the way through and even gives the parents a chuckle when Max comes back with his own answer of "Because!!" (I'm sure that's just payback for all the times our kids have to hear that answer!) I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Max Enchants Again
We absolutely love the Max & Ruby books.Max's Christmas was one of last year's gifts to my toddler munchkins. They love it and they just can't get enough of Max and his bossy-but-loving sister, Ruby.Max's Christmas takes Max through the Christmas Eve bedtime preparations, with Ruby helping him brush his teeth and put on pajamas."Why?" asks Max. "Because," says Ruby.Max wants to know why he can't stay up to see Santa and, after Ruby puts him to bed, he decides to take his blanket downstairs and just see for himself.Max falls asleep, Santa comes down the chimney (Santa is a bunny, of course), and Max wakes up. Santa tells Max to go back to sleep.Max asks, "Why?"Santa replies, "Because!"5-0 out of 5 stars I love Max!
Rosemary Wells' Max and Ruby books are the best books for small children of all time, and Max's Christmas is the best of the best. The focus of the book is Max asking his older sister Ruby a thousand questions about Santa Claus that she can not answer (until, an exasperated Ruby finally screams BECAUSE! and refuses to answer any more questions). If you've dealt with any 2 to 4 year old at Christmas time, this will seem so real you won't be able to keep a straight face. It's just a pure delight.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Priceless story, but difficult to read aloud.
Max doesn't like eggs, yet his big sister Ruby attempts to feed him one for breakfast. Max want strawberries, but Ruby insists he eat the egg first. Max tests his older sisters resolve by trying to get out of eating that egg: he covers it with a napkin, hides it on a chair, and finally climbs down from his chair, and hides under the table to avoid eating his breakfast. Ruby finds him, and demonstrates how good eggs are by taking a bite, "See, Max, said Ruby. It's a YUMMY, YUMMY EGG." One bite turns into two, and eventually Ruby eats the entire egg. Max tosses a strawberry into the air, and with a big grin on his face declares, "ALL GONE". Ruby is exasperated. 5-0 out of 5 stars Max at his funniest
My grandchildren and I love Max & Ruby stories.Ms. Wells is very clever in the way she illustrates the characters so that the reader can actually see Max thinking about how to not have to eat the egg.If your children haven't met Max yet, then this is definitely a book for an infant or young toddler, but children who have met Max love to go back and "read" the early boardbacks on their own. It's like visiting a familiar friend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, enjoyable for the very young
The illustrations are wonderful... bright and colorful enough to grab all children. The idea of the story (picky eater) is definitely an issue that children can understand, as well as parents. The story is clever, but some of the writing leaves a little to be desired. The phrases "...said Max's sister, Ruby", "said Ruby" is said seven times in the storybook... there are only ten pages... and "said Max" is written three times. Those phrases are always the ones that distract my child away from the story... and this one was no exception. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bathtime fun
The best thing about this book is that it's made of vinyl and can be enjoyed in the tub. My little one likes to make Max messy and then clean Max while he is being cleaned. The text is simple (not too many words per page!) and suitable for pre-readers. The book itself is safety tested for children 18 months and older.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is not a paperback!
I too was expecting a paperback, but if I had read the review information then I would have known and not purchased it.It is a simple version of the Max stories, but good for young children. My 5 yr old son loves all the Max books, even the board books meant for toddlers. But this one is too young for him to enjoy. This is a typical Max story for toddlers.I would definately purchase it for a younger child if I had one.It is not very interactive, but I was not expecting it to be one (since I thought it was a paperback). This is a good introduction to Max and his personality.I love Rosemary Wells and her stories, as do my sons.

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge disapointment
This book is actually a cloth book. The only interactive activity it provided is the scarf on the front page. I was expecting a paperback, as stated in the edition info. ... I was also expecting interactive activates such as letting children undress Max....etc. Well, the book is essentially picture on cloth. It didn't interest my one year old. At that age, they wanted real books (such as a REAL paperback). The plot is much too simple for my three year old. I wish I had saved my money to spend on something else. ... Read more
