Love this book!
This is the kind of book that even parents will want to read again and again. Moms and dads will be able to relate to the bedtime struggles, and kids will see themselves in the whiny little dragons (and so will their parents). This book makes me smile every time, even if I am reading it for the hundredth time!

Mom's Favorite
This is one of the best kids books I've ever read!My twins are at the age that they have a decent attention span, which is needed for this sort of-lengthy book.We act it out together:we pat our legs for "clippity clops", we shout "Away, he cried", and they see who can roar the loudest.I've gotten a list of great books to give as a baby gift.This one and "Harry the Dirty Dog" top the list.I just love the dragons, and I am so glad that my girls choose it to read a lot.FYI: Get Well, Good Knight is not as good.

Dr. Seuss, step aside!!
You'll love reading it as much as the kids. The dutiful knight, grudgingly following the dragons' bedtime requests, is a hoot. And how can you not love a little dragon in pyjamas who just wants another glass of water so that he can fall asleep? A wonderful, smartly written story that delights with repetitive lines (good for young ones to fill in), onomatopoiea ("clippety-clop"), play on words (night/knight) and great vocabulary choices. Adorable illustrations too. Funny & sweet without going over the top.

Cam Jansen is at it again, saving the day!
You have to love Cam Jansen.When you're a kid, you read all of these stories about magic powers, mystery, and adventure.But everyone tells you magic can't exist.Cam Jansen manages to solve every case without the use of magic... she's a real girl.That's what makes her special and what makes you want to red more and more.Cam Jansen is a real kid superhero, and the thought that a person like her could actually exist... makes her the best kid detective ever!

I remember Cam Jansen from when *I* was a little girl (and I am 27 years old).I always loved reading the mysteries and couldn't put them down.Now I get to share Cam with my own daughter. The Young Cam Jansen books are perfect for younger children.My daughter is 4 and 1/2 years old and loved the book!She has been reading since she was 3 years old so this was right on her level.It was enjoyable for us to read together and also for her to read on her own.She listened intently and helped Cam solve the mystery.By really thinking and solving the mystery, it gave her such a boost... I think that is one of the great things about the Cam Jansen books... they are "easy" enough for the childern to solve and they can be very proud of themselves for using their minds to solve mysteries. Beautiful Illustrations!
This is in reference to the version illustrated by D. Duntzee--some of the reviews here were a little confusing on that point.This version is the time-honored story by H. C. Andersen which I grew up hearing.The illustrations are really lovely and my two little girls just adore this book.If you have a library of classic children's stories, you should add this book to it--it's wonderful!

Empty retelling of Hans Christian Andersen tale
"The Princess and the Pea" by Janet Stevens is the retelling of the famous Hans Christian Andersen tale. This time, we get beautiful pictures, reminiscent of Maurice Sendak, and a bland story.
Good for compare/contrast with other versions
Prince Ralph, who lives with his parents King Adolph and Queen Frieda in Upper Crestalia, declares that he wishes to be married. Greedy Queen Frieda, who is consumed with her gem collection, sees yet another opportunity to corner the market on gems in the kingdom. Following the pattern of other versions of this Hans Christian Andersen tale, Queen Frieda devises tests for all of the young princesses in the land, who are, of course, unable to pass the unfairly constructed trials. Enter Princess Opaline, a car fixing, jump-rope jumping princess who must pass the pea-under-the-mattress test to win the hand of the Prince. Classic James Marshall
If you have a child between 3 and 8, you should buy this book.The late, great James Marshall (Edward was a pseudonym) had the rare ability to tell a story using easy-to-read words, but still with genuinely surprising and humorous twists.This book's ending is a brilliant twist, which I will not spoil here.Read more

A Good Reader - a review of "The Gingerbread Boy" by Ziefert
"The Gingerbread Boy" is a Level 2 book.This means that there are "[m]ore words and longer sentences for children just beginning to read on their own".And unlike some other beginning readers, this one actually seems to be at the appropriate level for a new reader.
perfect for ESL kids
As a librarian, I found this version of Gingerbread Boy the most attractive for the ESL kids. The adventures of the Gingerbread boy sounded simple, but impressive to kids aged 4-6.The boy ran and ran and theyoung readers read and read through the pages of sharp expressions of thefaces and the gestures of the old woman, horse or even fox and follow thelines of repetitive, brief words in English.Though the face of the boy isdistinctively plain, the young readers simply put themselves into thislittle plain boy.... My kids request me to read it over and over, and thenthey read it over themselves.If you have a wonder about"What isreading interest of kids?", this reading experience is rich in answer.In particular, in those Asian areas where "reading with and for thekids" is not a popular practice, this is a good start....ideal for"reading for fun" or "learning for fun" programmes. Teach your preschool to smoke
What a terrible book. Fox and his friends light up mid-way through the book. I'm not sure why people like these Fox books. Fox is disrespectful to his mother and resents spending time with his little sister. Is this really what you want to be teaching your kids?

Foul smell
We enjoyed our first Fox book, Fox on the Job, but Fox All Week is notably less enjoyable for two reasons:1) it is much less funny and 2) one of the stories shows Fox and his friends smoking cigars.Marshall tries to treatthe subject with intended humor, but it is lost on children ages 4-8.Thisage group is not able to understand such tongue-in-cheek humor until olderand the result of the cigar smoking story is confusion about whethersmoking is OK for kids.

Your 6 year old will love this book.
I never saw my 6 year old nephew laugh so hard.He has several Fox books and has read them all over and over again.We both liked this one because Fox is so funny while he gets himself into some kind of trouble every dayof the week! A word of caution: I only gave this book 4 stars because Foxand his friends smoke a cigar in this book. I didn't think the lesson theylearned from it was strong enough. ... Read more

Time to laugh...
Did you know that "Edward Marshall" is also James Marshall?It's too bad this author/illustrator died so young, because his books are so good.When I was a little kid, my mom read me all of the books about Fox and I loved them!This book contains three stories concerning Fox and his girlfriends.

3 1/2*Three Stories About Fox
This 48-page book is divided into three episodes dealing with our hero, "Fox."In the first story Fox reluctantly accompanies his sister to the park, when he encounters the pretty white fox "Raisin."The next day, he practically bribes his sister to go with him so that he might meet Raisin again. In "Fox and the Girls," Fox goes to a fair with Rose, then Lola ("On Wednesday Fox and Lola went to the fair."), and finally Raisin, who discovers Fox's previous "dates"("And on Saturday, Fox went to the fair...all alone."). In the final story, Fox and his sister win second prize in a dance contest ("They did the boogie. They did the stomp."), after Raisin turns him down--perhaps still upset about Fox's fair dates described in the previous story.While the first two stories have some clever humor, the final one is a bit flat.The pictures, while simple and cute (somewhat similar to Sandra Boynton's style), are chiefly limited to green and orange colors.A good book for Fox fans, but I can't imagine most children getting too excited over the stories.However, children may enjoy a"chapter book" geared for the early reader (perhaps grades 1-2).The publisher (Dial) lists the reading level as 1.8; the book is one of several in its the "Easy-to-Read" collection.

My son loves to read Fox, and I laugh too!
My son loves to read all of the Fox-series of books.He is in kindergarten and just past the first level of readers.This is just the right level for him, and he loves to hear about fox's latest goof up.I enjoy them too for their droll wit.For some reason (a combination of being the right level and their funnyness...we can't wait to hear what happens next), he reads these books extremely smoothly. ... Great for little ones!
We got this from the library when my daughter was 2 1/2 years old.It's easy for her to remember and "read" on her own.She loved it so much, I got tired of re-renting it, so decided to buy the whole set.I looked everywhere for them too.Thank Heaven for Amazon!

In the book Tales of Oliver Pig by Jean Van Leeuwen you could learn you don't always get what you want.The author is trying to teach us that little kids can't always do what big kids and grown ups can dol.And that is hard for little kids.
Preschooler Favorite
My five year old loves to have this story read to him.He thinks the parts with the little sister are very funny.I imagine that is the attraction, but for whatever reason he delights in hearing it over and over and over again.It is a very cute book and I have gotten him others in the series as well.I read it for "company" the other night (a three year old) and she must have enjoyed it as well because the next time she went to the library she asked her mom to check it out for her.I don't think you can go wrong for the preschool/kindergarten crowd. ... Rosa Parks
This book is a great read for a young child...maybe K-2nd grade. It was good at laying out for the reader the life of Rosa Parks.

Next to Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks is remembered!
Rosa Parks is best remembered as the Black woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a White person.However, she was much more that that. She was raised by grandparents because her mother taught school in another city. Her grandfather was the child of a slave owner and a slave. Rosa was determined to make a difference for her people. She and her husband took part in supporting the Scottsboro boys, Black youth who were accused of crimes they did not commit. Rosa became secretary of the NAACP and contributed greatly to her people, eventually receiving the Congressional Gold Metal award.

I AM ROSA PARKS
This book is about a girl that had to give herseat up in a bus for a white person. She did not get up so they called the police.The police arrested her for not getting up.Then when Rosa got out of jail she made a statement saying, " Why do black people have to give up for whitepeople?" Fox is the best!
I own every Fox book because they are so incredible funny but teach a lesson.If you like Love and Logic Parenting, this is it. Fox gets to face a hilarious consequence every time!

Fox Rocks!
Fox introduces small children to the delightful world of humor and irony in books.What a welcome relief from the drills on simple words that characterize so many early readers. With the simplest of words, Marshall conveys sibling rivalry, naughtiness, and even phobias with a sweet chuckle understandable to early readers. Fox was a constant favorite with both my girls and I only wish more children could go along on his misadventures.

A Cute, Sweet, Funny, & Absolutely ADORABLE Little Story! :)
A lurking monster sneaks silently up upon three children -- two boys and one girl -- who, all unaware, sit telling stories to one another on the beach.
Fun story, great humor, and a wonderful teaching tool!
"Three by the Sea," from the classic children's book team of the Marshalls, is a wonderful book for second grade readers (or advanced first graders) that offers up a funny story with a humorous sense of parody. This is a children's book that actually makes fun of children's books. Any young reader who is sick and tired of 'basal readers' (you know, those dull, "The man has a tan can; The dog is on the log," kind of books) will love this story. But best of all, adults will enjoy reading it along with their child. This is a perfect book to experience with your child to help them learn to read on their own. (I used to teach second graders how to read, and this was always their favorite book - they really got into it and loved reading it out loud along with me as we acted it out.)
