5-0 out of 5 stars Cobble Street Cousins - Special Gifts
The "special gift" is this book and the entire series of Cobble Street Cousins.I am the proud mother of four lovely daughters and what a pleasure to find such a sweetly written book.I have recommended this book to friends with daughters and they have loved it as well.It is hard to find a morally appropriate, light, non-violent book for young girls. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the type of book all little girls should grow up on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing New Book for Young Readers
Pandora the cat; Seabold the dog; and Whistler, Lila, and Tiny, the orphaned mice, make-up the wonderful, Lighthouse Family. Together they live amongst each other in an old Lighthouse on the water, where they help to direct ships. However, one day Whistler and Lila hear the cries of a whale, a baby beluga whale named Sebastian, to be exact. Soon they have found that poor Sebastian has lost his Mother, and doesn't know where to find her. It's now up to Whistler and Lila, with the help of the rest of the Lighthouse Family, and a cranky old cormorant named Huck, to find Sebastian's Mother, and bring mama and baby together once again.
4-0 out of 5 stars I like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful stories for young girls
I just loved this entire series as did my 7 year old daughter. The story revolves around three girls who are living with their aunt while their parents are overseas. They play, create and have lovely, lighthearted adventures. Each girl is given her own unique personality, her own style. The illustrations are so sweet, so detailed. My only regret is not having bought this series in hardcover as my daughter has read and re-read it so many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this Series!
My second grade daughter loved this series! These were books that she would read on her own without having to be encouraged to do so.When she took a break from reading the books, she would use her imagination to play out parts of the stories. There are very few books that she's done that with.My one piece of advice with this series is that the first book (In Aunt Lucy's Kitchen) should be read first. It introduces the characters that are in the rest of the books. After that, I'm not sure that it's crucial which order the stories are read until the last 2 books. They should definitely be saved for last. They deal with the cousins leaving Aunt Lucy and then returning for Aunt Lucy's wedding.I'm a big fan of Cynthia Rylant's and these books lived up to her reputation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another charmer from WV author
I LOVE this book! I did a literature box on this book for a class and fell in love with the characters. It's about 3 cousins who live w/ their aunt for the summer while their parents are on a ballet tour. They go through different adventures, facing each one with courage, ingenuity, and wit. They contain great character ed models.I would recommend to any 1-6 grader(especially girls) who like a good read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Review on: Ruby Lu, Brave and True by Lenore Look
Hello, all you folks out there! You can call me StoryMaker (notice the capital M) and, well...I usually just start my reviews with "Hi, you can call me StoryMaker" or something but that dosen't matter. Onto the review already. The book Ruby Lu, Brave and True by Lenore Look is, well...great! We checked it out from the library and I didn't want to read it because I heard that Ruby drove a car even though she's, like...maybe not even 8 years old! But my mom made me, and I'm sure glad she did! Ruby Lu lives on 20th Avenue South, and she has a baby brother named Oscar. As the story proggresses, new characters will appear - very interesting characters indeed, that make the story really interesting! Lots of new characters are added when Ruby goes to Chinese school, suggested by her mom so she can understand her grandparents who only speak the languages of China. Ruby dosen't want to - she hears really nasty things about Chinese school! But soon she does, and she meets lots of cool people! Other people are also met, and the story just keeps getting better! Here's some lists to give you more info:
4-0 out of 5 stars Let's all ride in the car car, let's all ride in the... car?
My library is divided into five different reading levels. In the first are the baby books, next come picture books, and after that easy readers for kids who are just beginning to read on their own. After that come the young reader books (early chapter books in laymen's terms) and finally full-out chapter books. The younger readers contain the widest assortment of reading levels. All of them are for kids who are past "Cat In the Hat" but aren't yet reading, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".Writing early chapter titles is therefore a monumental and infinitely difficult task. The so-so writers come out with countless sci-fi spooky books and the like. The better writers are able to synthesize their writing into a delicate balance between real life issues and situations that kids are going to find interesting.Paul Danzinger's, "Amber Brown" books do this brilliantly. And now "Ruby Lu, Brave and True" does too.
4-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't ask for a finer early chapter book.
Ah, Ruby Lu! Where have you been?

1-0 out of 5 stars I would have given this book a zero star rating if allowed
I am 52 year old grandmother and I purchased this book from another vendor for my granddaughter without reading it first. I remember being bullied all through school. I wish that I had handled the bullying differently than I did. Instead, I handled it pretty much the same way Jake did...not with the same results though. I wish that I HAD told my parents. I wish that I HAD told my teacher. I wish that I HAD trusted someone to help me out. Jake reinforces all of the "old school" stereo types...don't tell, telling will make it worse.Kids should not be afraid to talk to their parents or to their teacher. Kids should not be told that "tattleing" is wrong. The person bullying, for WHATEVER reason, is WRONG. Kids, ask for help! Parents, help your kids. I usually donate used books to my local library. This book will be thrown in the trash.

3-0 out of 5 stars "The Mean People"
It is a good book. The book is about this boy that likes to pick on people. He picked on Jake.He likes to make fun of people like Jake. The little boy thinks that he is all that, but he is not.Well i think you should read this book. The book is coming of age.The boys name is Link.Well Link and Jake both have sisters.Well Link's sister likes to pick on Jakes sister .Well I think that they should not pick on people like that. They do that because they think that it makes them cool. But it doesn't it makes they look stupid.well i think that you should read this book.

Editorial Review

There is only one way to keep from turning into a werewolf, and that iswith the help of a magic pretzel. This seems simple enough--unless the onlymagic pretzel on earth happens to be kept by your half brother Lance Von Sweenyin a special, burglar-proof case in the Museum of the Pretzel on Nemo Boulevard. This is the predicament of Mr. Talbot, beloved (yet weird and scary) teacher,half-man, half-wolf, and sponsor of the Watson Elementary School WerewolfClub.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First in a fun and furry series
This book features Normal Gnormal, a 4th-grader raised as a dog. When his parents become concerned about his behavior at school (growling and storing meat in his desk), Norman's principal signs him up for the school's werewolf club along with Ralf Alfa, Billy Furball, and Lucy Fang. The club is sponsored by "weird and scary" teacher, Mr. Talbot, who always wears a long coat, gloves, hat, scarf, and sunglasses. The children discover that Mr. Talbot is, in fact, a werewolf stuck in wolf form as a result of a curse placed on him by his half brother, Lance Von Sweeny. The curse can only be lifted by the titular magic pretzel, in Lance's possession.Obtaining the pretzel and returning Mr. Talbot to human form the book's main adventure. This is the first book in a series, which picks up from Pinkwater's 1985 book, I Was a Second-Grade Werewolf, slyly mentioned as Ralf's favorite book.Presented in 78 pages and 38 brief chapters, the story begins by providing a bit of background in "Chapter Minus Three" through "Chapter Zero" as a kind of countdown before launching into the main story. The tone is playful, current (the first chapter's "Frequently Asked Werewolf Questions" recall FAQ's on the World Wide Web), and hip without seeming to pander to childrens' tastes. The story is easy to follow with many comically nonsensical tidbits, including the parsnip car driven by Lance and the Museum of the Pretzel. The book's simple cartoonish black and white illustrations bring faces to the characters and, in the case of the children, present vital statistics such as height, weight, and type of wolf on ID cards.Although the characters and events are outlandish and comical, the story presents aspects of school and family life that will be familiar and poignant to children.Newly independent readers will enjoy the fast-paced and funny style of this chapter book; avid readers will also enjoy beginning an entertaining series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for both werewolves and humans
Daniel Pinkwater's "The Werewolf Club #1: The Magic Pretzel" is a fun book for young readers. The story is an entertaining blend of fantasy and humor, and is well enhanced by Jill Pinkwater's cartoony illustrations.5-0 out of 5 stars How Do You Cure a Werewolf?
Fourth grader, Norman Gnormal has been raised as a dog...it's what his parents really wanted when they had him and his earliest memories are of playing fetch with his father. Now the principal of the Watson Elementary School has signed him up for the Werewolf Club, since there aren't any other activities for boys who think that they're dogs.At the first meeting, scary and weird Mr Talbot, a werewolf himself and the club's sponsor, sets the group's first mission in motion. They are going to cure themselves of this evil curse by stealing the "Magic Pretzel", kept in a burglar proof case in the Museum of Pretzel. One bite, under the full moon and the curse will be lifted!Daniel Pinkwater haswritten a fast paced, funny, absurd and delightful short chapter book, that is just perfect for kids aged 7-10.With action packed scenes and hip kid-speak language, your youngsters will be turning pages to the very end as Norman, the only non-werewolf of the club, uses his canine skills to find and capture the prized pretzel. This is the beginning of a terrific series and a sure way to help your kids enjoy reading. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lucky Penny?
In Suzanna Williams' book, Matthew McGhee, Age 8, The Lucky Penny?, Matthew finds a penny on the ground on his way to school. He remembers a rhyme his grandfather taught him, "See a penny, pick it up, all day long, you'll have good luck!" And boy does this penny bring him luck! When he comes home from school, his parents decide it's time for the family to get a dog, so they pick one out at the local pound. The family must wait two more days to make sure the dog's owner doesn't come find the dog. Then this penny helps Matthew make an awesome catch in a PE baseball game. While all this is going on, Matthew's friend, Adam, loses his dog, Bear. Bear has run away, and the boys can't find him anywhere. Matthew gives his lucky penny to Adam, to give Adam luck to find Bear and it works! One of their classmates, Rebecca, found Bear when she left school to go to the dentist. She was keeping Bear in her garage to show her parents that she was responsible enough to have a dog of her own. When Adam find out Rebecca has Bear, he immediately calls his mom to go pick Bear, and later that day, Matthew and his family go pick up their copper-colored dog, whom they name Penny! This is a great book to use to help students learn about responsibility and friendship. Great for grades 2-4. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read and Fun too!
This is the story of Lilly (an 11 year old girl) and four ugly, loud cats...Lily lives in a single parent household and is home alone often because her mother works many jobs to support them. One unfortunate day, Lily is locked out and all the neighbors who usually help her when this happens are not at home...just old, mean Mr. Freeman and his loud, ugly cats.Mr. Freeman hears her crying and admonishes her to stop making so much racket because she's bothering him...eventually he allows her in his house to wait until her mother comes home, where she discovers that despite his cantankerous nature, he's quite loving and caring when it comes to his four very ugly, very loud cats. It's this kindness that Lily remembers when Mr. Freeman dies a short while later and the apartment manager threatens to call the S.P.C.A to get rid of the cats so he can rent the apartment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daniel Pinkwater ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is possibly, most certainly, probably, the most funniest book I have ever read. The only ones that come close to this incredible feat of genuis are other books written by Mr. Pinkwater. Now on to the pros and cons;
4-0 out of 5 stars Another fun romp with the young werewolves
"The Werewolf Club #2: The Lunchroom of Doom," is a fun entry in this young adult series by Daniel Pinkwater. The book is illustrated by Jill Pinkwater. The story is narrated by Norman Gnormal, a member of the Watson Elementary School Werewolf Club -- a sort of peer support group for kids who are werewolves.5-0 out of 5 stars The Werewolf Club is Back!
Poor Billy Furball, he's been thrown out of the school lunchroom for having a food fight with himself. It was so bad, they had to bring in special cleaning equipment. And on top of that, because of his behavior, Billy has to see the school psychiatrist, who has informed him that there is no such thing as werewolves...it's just a game that got out of hand. Now, to support and cheer up their fellow werewolf, the rest of the club has decided not to eat in the lunchroom either.First, they tried to eat outside, but it rained.Next they tried to each in their club sponsor's car, but it was too full of shedded werewolf hair. So, finally they went down the block to eat at Honest Tom's Tibetan-American Lunchroom. The food wasn't bad and they got to meet Captain Sterling of the North American Space Squad. He has been abducted by aliens more than 400 times. Now as the club lunches each day at Honest Tom's, strange things begin to happen...This is the second book in Daniel Pinkwater's Werewolf series, and just like the first, it is full of wacky characters and laugh out loud scenes. The easy to read short chapters and hip, kid-speak language will keep your youngsters hooked and turning pages to the very end. This is a silly, funny, very absurd story that is just perfect for 7-10 year olds. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a enjoyable story for young readers
Something is definitely wrong in the Robinson household. Mom and Dad's responses to the children's misbehavior are completely unrelated to their actions. For example, when Sukie kicks her brother Brian, her mother responds, "Waste not, want not." Another time Sukie is running through the living room with glitter in her hand. When the glitter spills, her father's response is, "If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump off a bridge too?"5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book By MPH!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful tale for the curious child and adult alike . . .
Ms. Shreeve's book is a wonderful and imaginative tale about the adventures of a wumblebug. In this delightful story, the wumblebug learns about his neighbors and matures through his experiences. Whereas some books for children are boring for the parents, this book is equally entertaining as a charming story for children and a fable for adults. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Hector!!
We love Hector the wumblebug! This is a fun story that really paints a great picture of what it would be like to be a bug!The author puts a lot of the natural world into the story so you learn about real bugs that live with the imaginary wumblebug. My kid loved this and the other book "Hector finds a Fortune" - we hope there are more Hector adventures to come.A good read aloud or early reader. We did both in my house
