5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable book, cute cats
Great for kids who love animals, especially if they like cats. It's full of action and and repeated sounds, which is fun and a good learning tool for young readers (I'd say about age 5-6).The author is obviously a cat-lover (like me and my kids!) since she has written other cat books, and there should be more of us out there!Cats are cool!I highly recommend this very cute book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Makes me dislike cats even more!
I found the story less than charming. The cats were rambunctious to the point of being obnoxious.I also felt that the book encouraged irresponsible pet ownership."Hey, who care about what happens, let's have them all in our home."Pictures were excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Has a cat ever made you mad?
Frustration with the bad behaviors of cats and joy with their good qualities are both told in easy-to-read rhyming sentences. The illustrations are a bit frantic, which is appropriate to the text. This book is a kick. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reader - a review of "The Gingerbread Boy" by Ziefert
"The Gingerbread Boy" is a Level 2 book. This means that there are "[m]ore words and longer sentences for children just beginning to read on their own".And unlike some other beginning readers, this one actually seems to be at the appropriate level for a new reader.
5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for ESL kids
As a librarian, I found this version of Gingerbread Boy the most attractive for the ESL kids. The adventures of the Gingerbread boy sounded simple, but impressive to kids aged 4-6.The boy ran and ran and theyoung readers read and read through the pages of sharp expressions of thefaces and the gestures of the old woman, horse or even fox and follow thelines of repetitive, brief words in English.Though the face of the boy isdistinctively plain, the young readers simply put themselves into thislittle plain boy.... My kids request me to read it over and over, and thenthey read it over themselves. If you have a wonder about"What isreading interest of kids?", this reading experience is rich in answer. In particular, in those Asian areas where "reading with and for thekids" is not a popular practice, this is a good start....ideal for"reading for fun" or "learning for fun" programmes. Ihighly recommend this book to the parents, librarians and teachers (ESLteachers in particular) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hamster chase
Oh to be a new reader! For those of you who learned to read with the Dick and Jane books, the latest New Reader books are a whole different class. One pleasing trend is the introduction of well-loved characters and stories to new readers.(One example is the _My first little house books_ series).Enter a new series called Peter's neighborhood, based on the beloved characters created by Ezra Jack Keats. The pictures are eye-catching, reminiscent, naturally, of Keats' style. The simple story is also pleasing with three friends working together to catch the escaped class hamster.Well worth a read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Division
This is a brightly colored level 1 easy-to-read book that encourages children to think about division and how to divide items evenly. The rabbit and the hare try to divide a mushroom into equal parts without success. The raccoon intervenes and eats the mushroom. They try again with an apple, but it is not divided in equal parts either. The raccoon offers to help again but rabbit and hare are wiser and decline his help. Rabbit and hare devise a plan to cut the larger and smaller pieces of the apple into equal parts. I would recommend this book to help children start to understand division and apply it to real life situations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations!
This is in reference to the version illustrated by D. Duntzee--some of the reviews here were a little confusing on that point. This version is the time-honored story by H. C. Andersen which I grew up hearing. The illustrations are really lovely and my two little girls just adore this book.If you have a library of classic children's stories, you should add this book to it--it's wonderful!

2-0 out of 5 stars Empty retelling of Hans Christian Andersen tale
"The Princess and the Pea" by Janet Stevens is the retelling of the famous Hans Christian Andersen tale. This time, we get beautiful pictures, reminiscent of Maurice Sendak, and a bland story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for compare/contrast with other versions
Prince Ralph, who lives with his parents King Adolph and Queen Frieda in Upper Crestalia, declares that he wishes to be married. Greedy Queen Frieda, who is consumed with her gem collection, sees yet another opportunity to corner the market on gems in the kingdom. Following the pattern of other versions of this Hans Christian Andersen tale, Queen Frieda devises tests for all of the young princesses in the land, who are, of course, unable to pass the unfairly constructed trials. Enter Princess Opaline, a car fixing, jump-rope jumping princess who must pass the pea-under-the-mattress test to win the hand of the Prince. No surprises here; however, the story does have an updated look and feel, and the winning princess once again proves to be a smart, independent woman. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars American Math
Remember the old gags like "which weighs more-a pound of X or a pound of Y?" Well, there are lots of those kind of riddles in this book. The publisher recommends this book for kids aged 6-9 and I would be reluctant to recommend it for younger readers as kids need a basic understanding of money, weights, measurements.... Of course you may regret buying this book because you know what kids are like with jokes--you could be hearing the same ones over and over and over... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 year old loves it!
After checking this out of the library, my 4 year old son immediately loved it.Keep in mind that it is not a book to help kids like camping. It is a fun book that can help kids start reading. My son memorized the book in just a few readings, and he now "reads" it himself. The pictures of the turtle and snake sleeping bags are great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for those who like camping
We are a family that likes camping so when I saw this title, I thought it would be a nice book. But the message is that camping is scary and that it is much more fun to stay home where it is safe and warm.Turtle and Snake are scared away by the hooting of an owl. This is not a message that we want to encourage in our family. My 4-year old daughter thought it was a pretty lame book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Corduroy's Hike
When Corduroy sneaks into Lisa's backpack for a hiking trip, little dos he know of the adventure that awaits him. A black ink cartoon with spare use of watercolor and crayon to highlight the main characters and events, this easy to read book guides the reader through a semi-textured adventure through the forest. This book includes a more complex and larger controlled vocabulary than that found in Dr. Seuss books. In Dr. Seuss' Shape of Me and Other Stuff, he uses black ink to draw the reader's attention to the main characters; a few primary colors comprise the background and highlight the poetic verse characteristic of Dr. Seuss. Although both Corduroy's Hike and Shape of Me and Other Stuff are both classified as easy reader books, much has changed in the complexity and length of text (and illustration) found in children's books over the years. ...
