Cole has many problems. His dad beats him, his mom says nothing about it, so his anger towards his parents is taken out on the world, and specifically at a schoolmate, Peter. Peter tells on Cole, so Cole smashes his head into the sidewalk, causing severe damage both emotional and physical. When Cole is put into a detention center, Garvey, a man working at the detention center, tells Cole about a Tlingit Indian justice ritual called Circle Justice. Cole will do anything to get of prison. He agrees to his terms and is sentenced to a year of banishment on an island off the coast of Alaska. There he encounters a Spirit Bear. After almost being killed by it, Cole is left thinking about his life, his choices, and the healing ramifications of Circle Justice.

Editorial Review

"Pb-pb-b-b-b. Pb-pb-b-b-b." With these magic vocables, Ralph the mouserevs up a dream come true--his very own motorcycle. Living in a knothole in a hotel room, young Ralph has seen plenty of families come and go, some more generous with their crumbs than others. But when young Keith and his parents check in to the hotel, Ralph gets his first chance to check out. He has always fantasized about venturing beyond the second floor, maybe even outside. Curiosity overcomes caution, and Ralph must have a go at Keith's toy motorcycle. Soon, the headstrong mouse finds himself in a pickle, when all he wanted was to ride a motorcycle. Lucky for him, the boy understands how it is. When he discovers Ralph in his thwarted attempt to abscond with the toy bike, Keith generously encourages the rodent to ride. He even teaches him the simple trick of starting the motorcycle: "You have to make a noise... pb-pb-b-b-b." The subsequent situations Ralph motors into require quick thinking and grownup-sized courage. The team of Beverly Cleary and Louis Darling has been a great favorite for decades, introducing young chapter readers to Ramona, Beezus, Henry, and of course Ralph the mouse. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Mouse and the Motorcycle
I read this book alot when I was younger, and now as a teenager I bought it and read it again just to pass the time. It was funny, smart, and Beverly Cleary makes it sound like mice and boys can talk to each other in real life and it's an everyday occurance. It is such a great book, if I can love it as much as a teenager as I did as a kid.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fearless Ralph
To a fearless little mouse named Ralph, pb-pb-b-b-b,pb-pb-b-b-b,was the sound he had been waiting to hear all his life. "The sound spoke of highways and speed, of distance and danger, and whiskers blown back by the wind." When Ralph spies Keith's toy motorcycle, his whiskers quiver with excitement. He ventures out of his mouse hole in the wall of his room, up the telephone cord to the bedside table and climbs aboard the toy motorcycle. Startled by the ringing of the telephone, Ralph and the motorcycle fall into the metal wastebasket. Keith not only rescues Ralph from the wastebasket but also teaches Ralph how to ride the motorcycle. His need for adventures soon begins when he tries to prove he is grown up and responsible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing
This book is an enchanting and fun way to learn how to draw dragons and other mythical creatures. It helped me a lot in my art with it's easy to follow instructions and beautiful illustrations. Jessica Peffer really knows what she is doing and this book is really well organized. A truely amazing book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Way To Learn How To Draw!
As far as drawing can go, this has to be one of the most helpful books out there. I must admit that I am a dragon-obsessed freak, but you don't have to like dragons or fantasy art in order to like this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.
I found this book to be extremely helpful. The author of this book did an amazing job with the illustrations and breaking down the steps where they are able to be followed to the finished product. As far as drawing books go, this was one of the far more helpful and I was thrilled with gaining insight on how to draw the more complicated anatomical features of the fantasy creatures, such as wings with feathers.I suggest this book to anyone who is interested in fantasy drawing, but cannot seem to pinpoint certain features such as feathers, horns, or tails.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delicious chocolately story
Chocolate Fever is about a boy who loved chocolate. He went to school one day and he heard "POP POP POP" then he looked at his arm and - pop - there was a brown dot.He went to a hospital that he absolutely hated.By then he had thousands of brown dots. The doctor touched one brown dot and said "OUCH" so then he asked if it hurt and he said "NO."The doctor asked why he said ouch, and he said he thought it was going to hurt.He ran away from the hospital and found a man who also had had chocolate fever as a kid.He asked how to fix it, and the man asked him what the opposite of chocolate is.It is vanilla, so he took a vanilla pill and didn't want any more chocolate once the spots went away.I thought the story was a little weird but I liked it because you could learn about their feelings when stressful things happened. This book would be good for kids in 2nd grade and up.It is a chapter book. JG

5-0 out of 5 stars Claudia's summary review of Choclate Fever
Chocolate fever? What's that? There are only two people in the world who can tell you. Chocolate fever is a sickness that you get when you eat way too much chocolate. So far no one else in the world knows about chocolate fever, but now some do. Henry Green loved chocolate, he liked his chocolate bitter, sweet, light, dark, and daily. One day, Henry leaves for school feeling like something strange is going to happen to him. Sure enough, he looks down in class to see little brown spots are growing on him. The doctors can't figure out what this new disease is. Once the doctors figure out the the brown spots are pure chocolate chaos starts. The doctors are poking Henry like he is a unicorn. Henry Green couldn't take it! So Henry ran, he ran all the way to the candy shop to meet with Mr. Cane. Henry told Mr. Cane about what was going on. Mr. Cane told Henry that he too had chocolate fever when he was a boy. He gave Henry Vanilla Pills and told him, "Take these and don't eat too much chocolate, then you will not have chocolate fever anymore."In and hour Henry did not have chocolate fever it was gone forever, or was it?

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay stories
Good book about growing up and some of the great stories you're expect from your grandfather. Could have used less information on the beatings headmasters used to give students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some are funny. Some are painful. Some are unpleaseant. Perhaps this is why I have remembered them so vividly. All are true.
So says Roald Dahl in the introduction to his autobiogrophy,BOY. The book is a collection of his childhood memories, from the magical summers in Norway to the dreary days at St.Peters boarding school. As in all of Dahl's works the characters are quirky and memorable, but more fascinating here because they really existed. The auther recounts the adventures of his childhood with tenderness and dry humor.
5-0 out of 5 stars delightful melodrama
I'm a Dahl fan, a writerfor both adults and children. I think the key to his success as writer for children is that he doesn't think children are stupid or don't understand what they see. From my own experience, and now as a father, I know that children see, hear, think and make conclusions with their experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Action packed stories
This is the 2nd page turner from Mr. Flanagan, following on the story of Gorlan's Ruins.I read his first book and now this book to my 3rd grader at bedtime.Even though the books are written for teens, my son picks up the book and reads it on his own because he can't wait to find out what happens next. And I have to admit, after my son fell asleep I had to read through to the end of the book to find out what happened next.I couldn't put it down. The only problem I have is, book #3 isn't available yet. Excellent story and excellent writing, and like Harry Potter, it will be enjoyed by all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than harry potter...
Yea i'm actually 15 but i thought this book was better than the harry potter series. the trilogy has potential if the author can use it. I LUV CLIFF HANGERS like at the end of the book....just makes you wonder what will happen...will Will and Cassandra escape together, or possibly even fall for each other....or will they adopt and learn techniques of the Skandians....thats what i hope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational
Flavia is a Roman girl with a nose for danger. With her gang of friends, she sets off on an investigation to find the real answers for the sudden and very questionable deaths of the dogs in her neighborhood. This is first and foremost a historical fiction novel. However, it is also very much a mystery caper and spine-tingling and bone-chilling adventure all rolled into one. The Thieves of Ostia is an academically-enriching experience. Perhaps the best part of Lawrence's book is that the educational aspect of this story is wrapped under a guise of entertainment, thereby making it easier for children to not only learn about Roman life in the year A.D. 79, but also to WANT to learn more about it. In fact, even adults will find Lawrence's book fun and amusing to read. Lawrence succeeds in providing a balance of a good story with a good dosage of factual information.
3-0 out of 5 stars Metophorical, Riveting,..
The Thieves of Ostia proves to be a very action-packed tale. Four children from completely opposite worlds come together as one -- A slave girl, a beggar boy, a Jewish boy, and a Roman girl, set out to solve a mystery, but end up unlocking the "priceless treasure" or humanity.
3-0 out of 5 stars Must we tone it so far down for children?
Another reviewer notes that their is a pro-Christian bias in this book and that is certainly true. That is not my complaint though I agree that the way this story represents Christians and their treatment in the Roman world at this time period is a bit romanticized.Instead I'm very concerned that some of the cultural details are toned down for "the sake of the children".It is unlikely a young Roman girl would have so much freedom to roam about town though she is not noble so she would certainly have greater freedom than those of the highest order.I also think it highly unlikely that people of such different order and class backgrounds would interact in these fashions. But my greatest problem with this book is how it treats slavery.Yes, it hints at some of the horrors but once the little slave girl is purchased she is treated almost like an equal by both little mistress and the father of the house.Romans were very status conscious and as close as one might become to a slave over the year, I doubt such a close and egalitarian bound would develop so quickly. It is all fine and good to write historical novels for children but do we do them any favors when we mask the truth of times past? ... The final legend. That's what To Be A King is. The final legend in the three that Soren, Coryn, the Band, & Otulissa have to read. In this book, they find a world of magic & chaos. Lord Arrin's forces of hagsfiends have split, forming other groups off nachtmagen. Rumors about a group of all hagsfiends led by Lord Arrin's old assassin, Ullryck, have been brought to the attention of the new King Hoole & Grank. They have just recently set up a new order called the Guardians of Ga'Hoole in the enormous tree which has come to be known as the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. There is also another rumor of a mad owl that has taken control of the Ice Palace in the N'yrthghar with his young hagsfiends. Soon, Hoole realizes, the forces of good will clash with the evil forces of nachtmagen. Hoole has the Ember, but to use it could be dangerous. So Hoole must make a choice-use the power of the Ember to restore the Ice Palace to it's former glory, or to let things go on without the strange, mysterious magic that is the Ember of Hoole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living Lessons! Student from North Bay, NY
Every Living Thing, by Cynthia Rylant, is a wonderful read for any middle school student. This book is full of many short stories, each story taught me a great deal of respect and responsibility, which added to my maturity. This book includes 12 stories. The 1st story is called "Slower Than The Rest." In this story a boy wins an award for the first time ever! The 2nd story is called "Retired." Retired is about a retired 4th grade teacher who becomes very mean and cruel and does not like kids after a couple years of retirement. Well, that is until one of her friends end up having to move to France and they can not take their dog with them, so they give the dog to the teacher and then she becomes very kind, friendly, and loving to children again. "Papa's Parrot" is the 3rd story. This story is about a father and a son who become closer than ever when papa ends up in the hospital. This event brought father and son closer together. "Boar out There" is the 4th story. This story is about a young little girl named Jenny, who gets injured badly by a wild boar. But after getting injured the boar tour his nose really bad and he is still running free today. "A Pet" is the 5th story. This story is about a little girl named Emma. One day Emma asked her mom and dad if she can have a pet but they said no. Well one day Emma came home from school and she found a surprise in her room, it was a fish. Emma was so happy she jumped for joy and was happy her parents listened to her about giving her a pet. These are just a few of the tales in this wonderful collection of short stories.Cynthia Rylant is also the author of Henry and Mudge books.Be sure to pick up any book by this fine author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touching stories about people and animals
"Every Living Thing," by Cynthia Rylant, is a collection of 12 short stories. Although different characters appear in each tale, the collection as a whole is unified by style and by theme. Each story deals with an encounter or ongoing relationship between a human being and one or more non-human animals. Since the book is only 81 pages long, each tale is quite brief.5-0 out of 5 stars For lovers of animals and people!!`
Wonderful stories!!Life as it is!! Having read these stories aloud to adults in nursing homes on numerous occassionandfound them to satisfy our need to hear good resolves, we can all recommend this good read. "A Bad Road for Cats", one of the favorites, that hits the hardrealities of human relationships and good resolves in our dealing withothers when things aren't right.Stories of people finding there waythrough realationships with others and the place that animals play in ourlives to make bridges.Read them! You will love them if you love peopleand animals.Write more of these Cynthia! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Art for Kids
I purchased this book for my kids who were 6 and 10 at the time.I was pleasantly surprised by the scope and variety of art covered in this book.Several well-chosen (nothing gory or disturbing to children) pieces of art are presented in nice, full color reproductions. The authors then point out various interesting things about the piece and ask fun questions about it.All of this serves to help children not just "look" at art, but to enjoy it and appreciate it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!
I bought this book for my grandchildren, a boy and a girl ages 2 1/2 and 5.Not only are they thrilled with it, their parents are enchanted. This book should be read by everyone! It's a marvelous primer and guide to the world of art, with pictures of some of the world's most famous art treasures and amazingly interesting explanations of why these particular pieces have endured. If you want your children or grandchildren to learn about what makes art relevant, this is the book for them!It should be sold in every art museum in the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book!
I was slightly reluctant at first to purchase this book - I thought it might not be one of our son's favorites at bedtime (4 1/2 years old). (He's your typical boy - loves books about cars, tractors, dump trucks, etc) Boy, was I wrong! The first night we sat down to read it, we both had a blast! This book does such a nice job of explaining art to children, in terms that he understands, that he was excited about reading it the next night. We went through the book the first time just flipping pages to look at the artwork, and stopping to read the details of the ones he found interesting at first. It was fun for me as a parent to learn what he finds interesting in art.I would recommend this book 100%! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Returning to Neverland
For this return to Neverland
5-0 out of 5 stars Fits the original like a hand in a glove.
Geraldine McCaughrean's "Peter Pan in Scarlet" is different from all other additions to the Peter Pan mythos in that it reads like an extention of the original story instead of a fanfiction. There is a comforting feel to reading this book, like the feeling of coming home.It was definately a treat to read after having read the original novel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fly Peter, Fly!!!!Wonderful!
Geraldine McCaughrean has created a fantastic sequal for all of us who believe in NeverLand! In this wonderful follow-up to Peter Pan, we are taken back to Neverland, where there is great adventure waiting Peter and his crew of familiar and unfamiliar cast. However, Neverland is a bit darker and more dangerous than what Peter first experienced, and the challanges he faces is much more than what he expects! From one adventure to another, readers of all sorts will completely cherish this wonderful book that picks up in rythem and beat from the initial story about the young boy who never wanted to grow up.I can simply say that the world at large has waited for THIS book written by THIS author.Ms. McCaughrean has done an amazing job in creating a sequeal that is as much a continuation as it is a new adventure.Peter Pan in Scarlet is a must read for every person who reads.Take flight and let your imagination soar . . . and fly with Peter Pan! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever: Deserves beyond a million stars
I love this book. Ever since I first read it in third grade, I read it at least twice a year, not including summer. The plot, setting, and characters are all amazing; It's absoloutly impossible to put it down! Alas, the movie is not as good, and the second and third movies are horrible, as neither of them have anything to do with what happened in the book. Anyway, if you love fantasy, science fiction, or just likebooks that you can read anytime and enjoy each time you read it, read this one. It's the best book in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 and a half stars for Bastian and Atreyu! A neverending epic tale.
I read the whole story through in three days taking small breaks. it seems to draw you in like the movie, and never let's you go. I felt when I read it that I was part of the world of Bastian Balthazar Bux, Atreyu and The Neverending Story, and had become a part of it myself. You would see what I mean if you have a good imagination. It's full of mysticality, magic and intrigue, and stuff that blows your mind at trying to visualize it because it's so peculiar and imaginative. When Bastian steals the book The Neverending Story from Coreander's Book store, he feels he is drawn to the book by some force-one which he is subtly aware of. This force is apparently a guiding beacon, for the book is a portal to Fantastica. The book describes parts of Bastians life though, which really amazes Bastian. Fantastica is a realm that actually has a reality all it's own, and some of the inhabitants, including it's ruler The Empress-know about earthlings. Pretty mind boggling to begin to describe. If you love books that are full of imaginitave and original concepts, this book is for you. The Neverending Story to me is a fantasy world that symbolizes all that inspiration, creativity and imagination can create through love. It's a MUST READ.

5-0 out of 5 stars i love this book
This book is a wonderful, amazing, and truly inspiring one to me. I read widely among the fiction genres, and of all the stories I have ever read, I loved this one enough to name my first-born son and only child after Bastian, the book-loving protagonist. This book is particularly rich, inspiring two movies with only the first HALF of its content. I firmly believe that anyone, everyone, should read this book, along with many other childhood favorites I have loved for years, "the secret garden", "the once and future king", "peter pan", "the hobbit"... well. it's beautiful. the language is educated and sophisticated, the imagery is fantastic, and the concepts are such as could be pondered by most adults and yield a gain in wisdom. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fast-paced thriller
Fans of Balliett's prior CHASING VERMEER will be delighted to see the sleuths Petra and Calder return in this sequel, THE WRIGHT 3, which covers another mystery involving a Frank Lloyd Wright architectural masterpiece. A class attempt to save a landmark from demolition results in supernatural influences as ghosts seem to be protecting hidden treasure. Add a coded message and you have a fast-paced thriller filled with twists and turns of plot.

2-0 out of 5 stars Everything's in place for a great story, but it never happens
I thought I'd give this author's second book a chance even though I found her first one ("Chasing Vermeer") rather disappointing. I like her Hyde Park setting, I like the way she works art into her stories, I like the way the teacher in the book runs her classroom as a place of exploration rather than a lecture hall. So--I thought, thought I--maybe with all these strong elements in place, the author will improve her plotting abilities in her second book.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you likedChasing Vermeer
I call Chasing Vermeer a Da Vinci Code for kids. The Wright 3 brings us the same children again, with another mystery to solve. The 3 sleuths are in one place now, and we have the conflicts that come with pairs becoming a trio. The mystery involves the Robie House, a Frank Lloyd Wright house on the University of Chicago campus.Although the threatened dividing of this house between 3 museums is not true, everything else about the setting (as in Chasing Vermeer) is real. The hidden man in the Robie house is also true! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift Book forSpiderwick readers
This handsome book is the kind of book that kids would sequester themselves in a treehouse and read for hours, comparing notes, sharing insights. It's one of those rare series, Spiderwick, that keeps kids and grownups waiting eagerly for the next volume because the world it portrays is so real, so rich and so rewarding. Perfect gift book for a ten to thirteen year old boy! If you haven't read SPiderwick series, never fear: they'll be around for many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You're Not Going to Take My Word for It, Listen to the Nixie
I was not familiar with Holly Black's prose or Tony DiTerlizzi's artwork before purchasing this book. I am familiar with quality, however, and acting on a suggestion from a trusted source (a Nixie, if you must know), I got a copy of the FIELD GUIDE as a gift to some youngsters (who are also of the highest quality).
