Editorial Review

Artist Sandra Boynton has been charming adults for decades with her whimsical, animal-centric greeting cards and her droll sense of humor. When Boynton transferred her weirdly wonderful critters to board books for babies, she made publishing history. These short, hilarious books are perfectly suited to toddler tastes, with their small size, few words, cheerful colors, funny jokes, and silly animals. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic fun!!!
Boynton's books are WONDERFUL!We bought this set after being given several of her books as gifts.I checked a few more out of the library and had to get copies of our own.The pictures are so delightful and funny! Our 4 month old isn't necessarily into the pictures, but she loves to hear the books read to her!

5-0 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE, GREAT books!
My son is 16 years old.We bought Sandra Boynton's books when he was a baby. The illustrations are funny and they are easy to read aloud in a funny, exaggerated way.Our son loved Boynton's books so much that, 14 years later, my husband and I can STILL recite "Moo Baa La La La."We buy them for all our friends who have babies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aaaaaawww!
I got this book when I was 6 and I still like it! It is the touching story of little Lilly, who loves her teacher but hates him when he takes away her purple plastic purse and sunglasses. It is sooo cute and very fun to read. It is very true-to-life, unlike those other stupid books that think they're tapping into the minds of children. I highly recommend this book. I even have a kid-sized purple plastic purse and a Lilly stuffed animal! This is such a cute book. 5 stars and perfect for any age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Kevin Henkes hit
We read two books to our daughter every night. With that in mind, we pay careful attention to the books we buy to read her. I love all of Kevin Henkes' books. They are both visually delightful and entertaining for both my daughter and I. He manages to be intelligent without being corny, and as I am reading I honestly feel like her vocabulary is being broadened. He never "dumbs down" his book with easy wording. I am also an English teacher and appreciate all aspects of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous--another great Kevin Henkes book
I just started student teaching this semester and this was the first book I read to my third grade class. Some read it already, but were still very excited to hear it again and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Silkstripe, thunderclan warrior
i loved this book.i bet crowfeather and leafpool will have kits, but cinderpelt will be keeping a close eye because she is already suspecting leafpool and they will be half-clan which really causes problems.i wish squirrelflight, (by the way, i love that name!) and brambleclaw liked each other still.brambleclaw is becoming untrustful, i mean, of course he wants to see his half brother, but me and my friend, Skyleaf, suspect he might kill firestar.or (as a hint in the new book cover) firestar might die by protecting his clan from a bear.who will become leader if he dies?graystripe is nowhere to be found! :( hopefully cody will help him find his way to the clans.by the way, i liked cody, she would have been a good queen.there is no deputy so no leader!i just know brackenfur and sorreltail will have kits.i love the new territories, though i miss the old land and characters like the elders.i cannot wait until twilight coes out!!it is sooo exciting!!!!! hurry up!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ANYONE WHO THINKS THESE BOOKS SUCK, YOU SUCK
This book is great!I'm am like the number one warrior fan and I can't wait for twilight.I have it on preorder and I think i'm going to die if I don't get this book.I can't wait to see see if brambleclaw gets back toghether and what will happen to leafpool and crowfeather.I LOVE THESE BOOKS AND IF YOU READ IT YOU WILL TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bananas Gorilla and kids...
My copy of this book is chewed, back broken, torn, taped, worn out by the use of my own children and years of my students in my Primary classrooms. I recall reading this with my younger brother and that was just forever ago. Some books just stand the test of time and this is one of those. As a teacher I know very young children like to categorize, inspect, look for something(well what else explains I SPY books?)and ferret out details. Scarry definitely "got that". I've seen children slip inside these pages and be entertained and cataloging for really long periods of time. Not that I'm suggesting it for that reason ALONE. My daughter Sylvia was definitely one of those kinds of children and she always searched for Bananas Gorilla. I had several videos that were made of the Richard Scarry world (get them) and at a very young age-two to three- she loved those in combination with the books. My son much later was similarly enthralled and now I use this material when the Standards hockers aren't looking teaching my 1st grade with students who have ELD needs-second language development. This particular book I really like because the early years social studies curriculum is "community" based and this attends to those understandings so well. I recommend this as a teacher to families, and with parent interaction and co-exploring it's a very fun afternoon activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars worn out
I am attempting to order another copy of this wonderful book because my 40 year old son remembers my reading it to him as a little boy and he wants a copy for his two year old son!The conversations you can have with your child as you examine the pages are incredible! Our copy is completely worn out, but I have saved it for when he visits!

5-0 out of 5 stars My best book of all time
I got this book as a prize when I was 8, and I loved it every minute. I have read this book so many times and this has been a blast 18 years owning it. It has been my source for dreams of many of my childhood dreams and these illustrations are so good. If you are looking to buy your kid a book, do yourself a favor and get this own. It was my best friend for a long time and I am sure, it will be for your kid too !! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching
I love this book!It has a simple, beautiful message. It brings tears to my own eyes every time I read it.I use this book to teach my 7th graders to write a critique. The illustrations are excellent and add to the magic feeling the descriptive words in the story captures.I am looking forward to reading this with my daughter in a couple of years.

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought this book was horrible
I bought this book online and was not able to see it like I would in a book store. Had I seen it I would never have purchased this book and will never read it to my 6 year old son! It went from suggesting eating your dinner quickly to wiping a dirty jar on your close to cutting holes in a jar lid with scissors quietly so your mom won't catch you. One of the illustrations shows a boy holding scissors wide open with his hand on the inside of the open blades. I would never read it to any child and think the message is just horrible. Yes it is fun to catch fireflys but I know this could have been done better without the dangerous suggestions and disregard for listening to adults and being careful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby-Friendly
Nice, sturdy books. Stories are concise for short attention spans. I can usually get through a whole book before my 4-month old gets antsy. She likes the pictures and turning the pages is easy for her since the books are so little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to George
I read these to my son since he was a baby and he loved them! These definitely interested him in the "real," full-length George books when he got older.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classics for the very young
These books were purchased for a one year old and are very sturdy and will last for a long time.My grandchild is too busy to sit still for more than a few pages at a time, but these books are small enough for him to hold and point to the pictures and enjoy on his own.We read to him by naming the pictures, but the reading experience can never begin too young. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best little bookito I have readito!
Even though my daughter is a little young for this book I picked it up anyway...I love this little character.Like the reviews above the little sing-a-longs and the story itself is just so cute.I plan on buying all the skippyjonjones books and the little guy himself! You won't be dissappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Skippyjon Jones is adorable
I have had Siamese cats all my life, and Skippyjon is certainly a Siamese, even though he thinks he's a Chihuahua. The author has captured the imagination of a Siamese kitten perfectly. As an elementary school media specialist, I can say this book is loved by all children.I'm sorry if the Latin culture is offended by this cute story (funny how Speedy Gonzales wasn't offensive many years ago), but the bravery of Skippito Friskito should be commended as he fights the bandito.Children love the accent and the cat!As for me, it's a book I can't get out of my head. ... THE PIGEON DOESN'T GET TO DRIVE THE BUS! Willems is at his wittiest best in this pigeon book. When my sister told me she was pregnant I immediately started thinking about shower gifts -- and this book topped the list. The shower was this past Saturday and the book (presented as part of diaper bag package) was a total hit.Everyone wanted to read it right there -- and they did!

I read this book to residents at retirement center and we all loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
The perfect combo of words and pictures makes this book soar. The bats are endearing, the rhyme is soothing - a wonderful bedtime (or anytime) read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humor of Jack Prelutzky, Warmth of Stellaluna
This wonderful, charming, witty book is as much a pleasure to recite as it is to look at. The text is clever and inventive; the illustrations spark the imagination. Lies uses a breathtaking palette of dark, nighttime colors for the beginning of the book--but then includes a few scenes in starkly different (and funny) settings. His characters and details are highly engaging and can be enjoyed over and over again--as they surely will be when they become a bedtime or storytime favorite. ... Read more

I actually give this book four and half stars. I liked it a lot and it had lots of good advice about how to be a good friend. It described how I feel when I feel shy. I am five and almost three quarters and my sister who is two liked it also.
5-0 out of 5 stars Autism Spectrum lifesaver..
.. and should be listed as such.My daughter loves this book, she is very intent as we read it, which means she is taking it in.She has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which is a high-functioning form of autism. These kids have difficulty with social situations, and they are visual learners, so this is awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for girls
With caddiness starting at even earlier ages these days, I bought this book to help my 6 year old daughter understand that not everyone demostrates good friendship. She's so sensitive and doesn't understand why others don't respect her feelings. This book reiterates how to be a good friend and how not to be. It praises being kind and caring so it reinforced what she knew to be correct behavior. The illustrations she recognized immediately to be Marc Brown's adorable and colorful characters. I highly recommend this to any child who's learning to deal with bullies and pushy kids in school. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for getting kids to read
I bought this for my nephew for his 10th birthday. When he opened it he said "now I can take my name off the list at the library cause I OWN it" For the rest of the party he regaled us all reading from the book. In the hour he owned the book he learned several new words. What a great way to get kids to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift book forlittle boys!
My nephew LOVED it. I expected more pictures and less text but it didn't bother the 8 year old. He got tons of thrills just from the kid picking his nose on the cover. Perfect gift for a wild little boy along with a container of that oozing slime you get at Walmart. (the fits of giggles from the booger jokes are worth everything)

My 9 month old grandson loves to be read to. He points to the pictures of the sheep

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read and my 3-yr-old loves it!
This is a very simple book that uses a lot of rhyming words with the "eep" sound (sheep, jeep, beep, etc.).My son has memorized the book and loves to "read" it to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheep books are the best
Sheep in a Jeep was the first sheep book I purchased, I happened across it in a discount store and picked it up. I fell in love! I had to buy all the other sheep books. The rhyming is great, the story cute, the artwork is wonderful. Great for little kids and those of us who are just kids at heart! ... Read more

Editorial Review

He may be an old standby, but he never lets us down. When in doubt, turn to the story of the cat that transformed a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure. There's another, hidden adventure, too: this book really will help children learn to read. With his simple and often single-vowel vocabulary, the good Doctor knew what he was doing: hear it, learn it, read it--laughing all the way. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite! More than meets the eye!
The Cat in the Hat at first glance may seem like a nonsensical text meant merely to amuse its readers. If you stop and ponder this story of two children left at home alone one afternoon, you soon realize there is a more powerful message than first meets the eye. The children clearly know the difference between right and wrong, but with the slightest influence from the Cat, they easily give in. I believe the fish represents their conscience. They choose to ignore its warning time and again, and therefore, find themselves in a mountain of mess. Before the story's end, they are able to right the wrongs, but we as readers are left with this thought and question: "Then our mother came in and she said to us two, "Did you have any fun, tell me what did you do?" Should we tell her about it? Now what SHOULD we do? What would you do if your mother asked you?" (Seuss, 60-61).

This is such a fun clever book.I love to read it to my son.The story gets so exciting- the only problem is it has so much going on in it that some times I think it is not good to read it before bed time.Because if you get too into the characters it could wake your kid up.Love it! ... Read more

Editorial Review

A stuffed toy rabbit (with real thread whiskers) comes to life in Margery Williams's timeless tale of the transformative power of love. Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'" This sentimental classic--perfect for any child who's ever thought that maybe, just Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Never trust your therapist
My therapist recommended that I read this book, for reasons unknown to me. It is a good children's book, but not for an adult suffering from agoraphobia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me real
Who would've thought that I would learn one of life's lessons tucked within a children's book?
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful heart-touching story...
Absolutely loved it.At first, I thought it was strange...Because I thought it would be animated, but instead it was a sequence of still pictures.Like, as if, you were reading the book. But, within the first few minutes I was hooked and a half hour flew by with a wonderful ending.Meryl Streep does a beautiful job narrating the story and the piano music by George Winston is lovely.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Companion to Dragonology
I originally bought this for my nephews, who have a fascination with dragons and such at the moment. It's definitely a result of the Harry Potter phenomenon, but the similarity ends at its "magical" quality. Its intent is the opening of minds to the hidden worlds of the imagination, and a rekindling of young peoples' interests in areas of mythology and classic literature. Supposedly the work of the last dragonmaster, the book aims to dispel the myths on dragons, recalling Hagrid's comments that they are "very misunderstood creatures". While Dragonology has lots of bells and whistles and moving parts, this is, as it says, more a handbook, and not as fun as its predecessor. It is great for stimulating the imagination of children (of all ages, apparently), but it's a slightly more involved text than Dragonology, and therefore likely to appeal to children 10+. It's artwork and some of its content appears based on The Flight of Dragons, by Peter Dickinson, upon which Discovery's Dragon's World DVD was also based. Both of these are great additions to this book, if you can get them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Companion to "Dragonology"
I love this book! I think it might even be more fun than "Dragonology"! The illustrations are still excellent and all the dragon lore is there, but this time, you get to apply your knowledge! The Dragonology Handbook teaches you how to be a Dragonologist through puzzles, dragon riddles, and learning how to write in Dragon runes. The book also has more information on the different dragon species and some other species that weren't described in "Dragonology". It also says where these dragons can be found and what they prey on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good companion to Dragonology
This book is very clever. It expands on the topics covered in "Dragonology". There are items to pull out and there is another section on dragon writing to translate. ... Read more
