5-0 out of 5 stars To Be A King Reviewed by: Soren
The final legend. That's what To Be A King is. The final legend in the three that Soren, Coryn, the Band, & Otulissa have to read. In this book, they find a world of magic & chaos. Lord Arrin's forces of hagsfiends have split, forming other groups off nachtmagen. Rumors about a group of all hagsfiends led by Lord Arrin's old assassin, Ullryck, have been brought to the attention of the new King Hoole & Grank. They have just recently set up a new order called the Guardians of Ga'Hoole in the enormous tree which has come to be known as the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. There is also another rumor of a mad owl that has taken control of the Ice Palace in the N'yrthghar with his young hagsfiends. Soon, Hoole realizes, the forces of good will clash with the evil forces of nachtmagen. Hoole has the Ember, but to use it could be dangerous. So Hoole must make a choice-use the power of the Ember to restore the Ice Palace to it's former glory, or to let things go on without the strange, mysterious magic that is the Ember of Hoole.

I never cared for that Mutts comic strip in the newspapers.Too cute and not funny.Maybe it's because I'm an adult. And maybe I have no excuse for reading the comics at all at this point.I don't know. But McDonnell's characters and light touch work well in this context, in a kid's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars *** simply enchanting ***
Recommended for anyone, any age, i.e., everyone ~~ Patrick Mc'Donnell's comic-book is a gift that I imagine anyone would want to receive. The Gift of Nothing is warm, crystal clear and gently instructive. It's a little story about giving a very big gift, of the self.

This book is about a group of mice in search of the sword and grave of one of their mostbeloved warriors. This is a book with much action and much description; it is sure to be a classic for many, many years to come. The book is fun and has a lot to look forward to after you start. If you have read and liked Dragon Rider then you should like this book. It's a great book if your more a fantasy and a fiction-type reader. If you have seen the movies Harry Potter or Tales of Desperox then you should like it. Have a fun time reading.

Redwall is a fortress inhabited by mice.It is in a place called Mossflower, a beautiful wilderness. The main character is Matthias. He decides to go ona quest for Martin the Warrior's sword after a portrait of Martin is stolen from the abbey. This story is full of action sequences andgood triumphs in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for learning
Our son started "playing" with these when he was 9 months old. They are just beautiful as other reviews say and they have helped our son learn his animals. He spends endless amounts of time sorting through them, looking at them (he loves the pictures) and carrying them around the house. Now at 15 months he can pick some of the animals out the pile and bring them to you when you ask.Since he's learning both spanish and english if you ask for the horse in either language he will sort through them until he finds it and then bring it to you (very proudly I might add).He would not have learned this much about animals without these cards!Well worth the $10.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful pictures
The pictures are gorgeous. The cards are large enough for little hands to handle easily and sturdy enough to resist bending. My 2.5 y/o son got around that, of course, by dropping them on the floor and prancing around on them.He loves to name the animals on the cards and does his little dance on them each time he is finished. They held up well and are only slightly bent here and there.Definitely a good investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures!
The cover does not do these flash cards justice. The pictures are absolutely beautiful. The cards are very sturdy & hold up well to little hands. The kids love naming the animals and are happy looking through these on their own.Only drawback - they get spread out all over.It would be great if they were on a binder ring! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing...
I bought this book for my 21 month old as she loves so many of the Dr. Suess books. We didn't even get through the first couple of pages before she was bored with the story and illustrations.Maybe she'll like it better in a few years, but for now it is just sitting on the shelf...

4-0 out of 5 stars A story with a twist
My family have been happy fans of Dr Seuss and we enjoyed this book, it's quite funny because as a adult reading this to your children, you can't help but think that there is a message in the story aimed at the adults !!!! That's the way I saw it anyway !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Satire
Greed. Abuse of Power. The king of the pond will literally step on others to get what he wants. Until a plain little turtle below in the stack, his name is Mac, precipitates change.Great introduction to satire, pokes fun at human shortcoming.Dr. Seuss rhythm and rhyme. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and Charming
A black-and-white picture book that is more gorgeous than any color book I've seen in a long time. Henkes' kitten is charming and beautifully drawn; the text is simple enough for a child to memorize but as rhythmic and elegant as haiku. A great book to read aloud at bedtime. Deserves the Caldicott medal fifty times over. My two-year-old niece was captivated by the bold lines of the illustrations; my four-year-old nieces loved the simple but clever story about the kitten who longs for that little bowl of milk waiting for her in the sky - the full moon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story
This book is simply a delight! I bought it for my granddaughter who is 9 months. She loves for me to read it to her. We just love it!!

2-0 out of 5 stars The story behind the story is more interesting
This book is simply not that great. The rubber ducky sound at the end is cute but nothing to applaud. The art is borderline awful and, while the story behind the story is cute, it just did not come out great as a children's book. I must confess, I am not an Eric Carle fan though, with the exception of The Very Busy Spider, which I enjoyed. To put it simply, don't bother. The two redeeming qualities of this book are 1) it teaches counting well (the first rubber duck, the second rubber duck) and it exposes the kids to animals you do not see every day (octupus, flamingo, pelican).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Emergent Readers
As an Early Childhood professional I am always looking for goods books rich in language, story and pictures. This book is one of Eric Carle's best books.I am a teacher/owner of Oceanside Pre-Kindergarten a unique Literacy based program to help children prepare for Kindergarten in today's intense learning environment in formal education.

As a family counselor I know how essential it is to give our children a steady diet of encouragement--this book provides a healthy dose of encouragement and more!

is a book of discovery. For a child, it holds the delights of an afternoon in Mrs. Wagner's garden of flowers and the small creatures that dwell in a place of nature. A young girl Ashley shares her pleasure with her friend and a wise bumblebee named Ruby Lee who, much to Ashley's surprise, talks to her. Mrs. Wagner asks Ashley to help her by potting some flowers for her patio, but Ashley is afraid she will do it wrong. Left with her uncertainties, Ruby Lee enters her world and convinces her "Ofcourse you can pot those flowers for Mrs. Wagner. You are a talented and bright young lady." Taking Ruby Lee's advice, Ashley finishes the job and realizes how good it feels to know "She had done it!". When Mrs. Wagner returns to the patio, she is very pleased with Ashley's efforts and tells her that by believing in herself, she can do anything

5-0 out of 5 stars My children are enchanted, amused and QUIET!
I purchased this CD prior to a family roadtrip last spring, having no prior exposure to Arnold Lobel, or Frog & Toad. My 6-year old son and 4-year old daughter were quick converts. They easily follow the stories, laugh at the absurdities of the characters' sweet friendship. They constantly requested it to be played in the car whenever we were out and about. Since then, we have also purchased "Mouse Tales" on CD, which they also adore. Intelligent, engaging, & fun.

Editorial Review

Officer Buckle is a roly-poly bloke, dedicated to teaching schoolchildren important safety tips, such as never put anything in your ear and never stand on a swivel chair. The problem is, Officer Buckle's school assemblies are dull, dull, dull, and the children of Napville just sleep, sleep, sleep. That is, until Gloria the police dog is invited along! Stealthily pantomiming each safety tip behind Officer Buckle's back, Gloria wins the children's hearts. Meanwhile Officer Buckle assumes the cheers and laughter are all for him. As the master comedian Jerry Lewis once explained, every slapstick artist needs a straight man! Children will be highly entertained by the laugh-out-loud, adorable illustrations in this 1996 Caldecott Medal winner, while learning the value of teamwork and a pawful of nifty safety tips. 5-0 out of 5 stars Officer buckle & gloria (Caldecott Medal Book)
This is an excellent book for k-2 classes. Our school has joined our Police Department in (adopt a police dog). This means that we help raise money for the police department to help provide care and the tools that our police dog might need. This book helped our students understand the relationship between the policeman and his dog. The children understood that policeman are there to help us in many ways and giving safety tips is one of the ways they can help us.I like the fact that this book is also mentioned in The Mailbox magazine and you can go on-line to the Mailbox site and get worksheets for the students to do in relation to the story. It is worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars the beginning of a beautiful friendship.....
this book came out in 1970......it truly showed me what a really great childrens book should be.......the five stories are about friendship as it should be in real life but it's not......this will truly enlighten anyone who reads it...adult or child.......

4-0 out of 5 stars Endearing
This is a very sweet book. Some of the stories seem to not have point at the end, but that's probably because I'm looking at them from an adult female point of view.Other stories are endearing.A sweet, sweet book that teaches what it is to be a good friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simple but true-to-human-life stories and the drawings are a delight.
It's so wonderful to have a book that a very young child can read himself, and then ask the adult, or other reader, with whom he is sitting, for help with difficult words. When I was a kid, 65 years ago, we only read the simplest of books, with no real relationships, because we were expected to read them without help. Frog and Toad have it all over Dick and Jane!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mouse Paint
Cute book about some white mice who get into some paint. They paint themselves and mix the colors to create all colors of the rainbow.Great book for learning what color combinations create other colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning color mixing
This is an excellent book for children learning their colors. It starts with three white mice that see three jars of paint, one red, one yellow and one blue. They start playing in the paint and their colors are changed. Not content with being red, yellow and blue, they enter paints of other colors and their color is changed to the mixture. Yellow feet in blue turn to green, red feet in yellow become orange and so forth. The illustrations are minimal, yet effective. I strongly recommend this for children learning how to mix colors to make new ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Painting mice, how nice
My daughters loved this book during ages 3-5.In a cute yet simple way, the mice delightfully display the primary colors and then show the creation of secondaries. Inevitably, after reading this book for the first time, your child will want to get out the watercolors and some paper.Whenever a book spawns activity, it is a sign that learning happened. ... Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk go the blueberries into the pail of a little girl named Sal who--try as she might--just can't seem to pick as fast as she eats. Robert McCloskey's classic is a magical tale of the irrepressible curiosity--not to mention appetite--of youth. Sal and her mother set off in search of blueberries for the winter at the same time as a mother bear and her cub. A quiet comedy of errors ensues when the young ones wander off and absentmindedly trail the wrong mothers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's an Oldie but a Goldie!
My kindergarten teacher had also read this book to me and now I'm reading it to my kids, but really to my son because he's 4 and my daughter is 8. She listens to it when it comes time for me to read it to him because she would find it amusing. Blueberries for Sal preserve a distinct since of life when tin pails and wood smoke, bobby pins and rambling dirt roads were routine. At the same time it is a timeless portrayal of curiosity and maternal instinct as Sal and her mother find themselves sharing their berry patch with a hungry bear cub and its mother. The words flow in a natural rhythm, creating patterns that build anticipation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
My daughter loved this book from the age of six and continues to love it now that she is just about eight. This book doesn't hold my six year old son's interest as long as it did my daughter's but he does like it.Makes a nice gift for any that age group. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The hippo needs some real friends.
This book gets two stars for being well-written, having cute pictures, and being fun to read. However, I am concerned about the content. If you want to bring up your children to resist peer pressure, then this might not be a good choice.
1-0 out of 5 stars Negative messaging
I first read this when a friend bought a set of Sandra Boynton books for her soon. She and I were both horrified by the ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it a song or a book?
Children will get a first, cheerful lesson about the natural world by becoming acquainted with an enchanting baby beluga. The illustrations are a joy, and the song's rhythm and rhyme make it easy to remember and sing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raffi does it again!
This is a great multicultural book that you can sing/read that has a great soothing melody.Watch out, though, once you start singing this song, it'll be stuck in your head for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Beluga - great book and story for lessons in life
The book "Baby Beluga" is special to me because it is a story of my favorite sea creatures' daily adventures "in the deep blue sea". It inspired me to want to swim like Baby Beluga (a little white whale whose skin shines brightly in dark places and is gentle to people).

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites!
I have read this book to hundreds of children and adults. I have shared it with my own kids and have read it to children in my first grade class as well as to children in the Storytimes that I have done at the library. I have also highlighted it when doing literature presentations for other teachers. The reaction is always the same. The audience is quiet at first and possibly thinking, "Hmmm. Not very interesting." But then as the tree begins her struggles (I like to think of her as a girl!) there is side-splitting laughter that increases as each page turns. As soon as the book is over a chorus of, "Read it again!" begins and of course, I do! This book is a gem and sharing it each year is one of my favorite things about fall!

Great childrens book. Mr. Kelley was the 2nd grade teacher for both my girls and they loved all his books and still do.. I would recommend this book to all parents.... Keep writing Marty

3-0 out of 5 stars not what I hoped for
Although this book has beautiful music and wonderful pictures, the retelling of the origional story is not very good. Many important elements of the story are changed. The wolf is released back into the wild because he says he is sorry and will try to change. I prefer the origional story and was not expecting changes such as this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow great!
I bought this book as teaching tool to help my students learn to love classical music and stories. This book cleverly shows them the characters and their music clearly. My classes have been entertained by the excellent recording and clear pictures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The "kinder, gentler" ending removes the dangerous aspect of the wolf. The wolf is intended to represent the evil in the world beyond the garden gate and Peter vanquishes it by being smarter and more agile. Both the threat and the victory are diminished when the wolf simply promises to do better in the future. Yuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warriors: Rising Storm....
There are two diffrent kinds of covers. One with Cloudpaw and Fireheart, One with fireheart and Sandstorm. Last tuesday was library day: The second one. I was thinking "The books I borrowed this time was boring." So I returned them, went to the fiction section and found 5 series of warriors. I picked the 4th in the series, as It was appealing. I read this one first, I had gotten three books. This book is far by better than almost ANY book I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Troubles Heat Up
This was a more intense "reality-check" kind of book. Fireheart is now appointed deputy in the place of the forever-loathed Tigerclaw, and he has new responsibilities way beyond being a warrior. His best friend has gone, and left Fireheart to deal with problems alone. Fireheart, formerly a kitty-pet, visited his sister, Princess, from time to time at the twoleg place and has promised to watch over and possibly mentor her oldest son in Thunder clan, Cloudpaw, who is stubborn and disobediant to the warrior-code. Thunderclan's leader, completely shocked by Tigerclaw's betrayal, has been mentally and physically weakening leaving most of her priorities as burdens to Fireheart on top of those of being a deputy. This is a hard book to read but so real that, however emotional it is, you can't stop reading the adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars windsor jr high school-lv
A lot is going on in this book and to Fireheart its a little overwhelming Cloudpaw is more lyal now than ever and is getting better everyday. I soon expect him to be a warrior. Fireheart is deputy and taking on a lot of responsibility. Also him and Sandstorm have come quite close i hope it lasts. Fireheart and Graystripe have always been best friends will Graystripe stay loyal to the clan hes in now? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!
This books deals great with strangers. It also shows not to judge a person by the outside. The only thing it needs is to tell kids what to do if a stranger does capture them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I think this was the perfect book to teach my son about strangers.I tried to introduce the idea to him myself, but I couldn't explain what a stranger was without scaring him.He already likes the Berenstein Bears so this put a tough subject on his level and did a great job explaining the differences in strangers.I would recommend this book to everyone with a young child and I will be purchasing more copies for my nephews as well.
