This book is a great read to prepare your child for the fun and excitement of Halloween.It displays different American holidays and rates Halloween as Emily Elizabeth's and Clifford's favorites. They show Clifford in different costumes and let's your child interact by asking which would "you" suggest.My 3 years old really enjoys this one.

Cliffords Halloween
I thought this book was so adorable how on every holiday Clifford does something special like for Christmas he dresses like Santa and gives out gifts, on Easter he plays the Easter bunny, and on Halloween he always dresses up, in the book he dressed up as many different things such as the devil, a clown, a witch, and even a ghost! Hes the most adorable dog in the world!! At Emily's party he was a ghost and everyone loved him. How can't you love Clifford? I know I love him! This book is suitable from the ages 0-6. Entertaining and Educational for Children
A change of seasons is in the air. Fletcher the fox doesn't understand and now he's worried.
Beautiful language and art--highly, highly recommended
It's rare that a children's book comes along where both the artwork and the language reach the heights offered up by Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. The story's premise--a young fox attempts to protect his favorite tree from the encroachment of autumn, trying in vain to keep it leaved, literally to the last leaf--could have easily become overly sentimental and cloying.Instead, there is a true sense of sadness and empathy leavened by some wonderfully quirky moments all of which lead to a close that is as satisfying as it is moving.As it is, the story could certainly have stood on its own for plot alone, regardless of language or art.But the artwork is simply sensational, the impressionistic watercolors perfectly matching each page's tone and sentiment, matching the movement of time through day and night, from fall to winter, culminating in perfect pace with the plot in a final illustration of the tree that is simply beautiful.It's a good book for the story, an excellent book for the story plus the art.What makes it a great book, truly a beautiful book, is the language, which never fails to please, to startle, to jostle. The words are sharp and vivid, the rhythm carries you along, and the rhymes and slant rhymes sneak up on you in singular moments of sheer joy in language.The book is a pure clinic in children's picture books as all three elements--plot, art, and language--each alone a superior example, come together to create a whole even greater than its impressive parts.A great book, highly recommended.

Wonderful book, beautiful illustrations
This is a beautiful book.Fletcher is a young fox that has noticed the forest is changing as the summer comes to an end.He has a favorite tree.When he sees the way the leaves are changing he thinks that the tree is sick.He does everything he can think of to help the tree keep it's leaves.Of course in the end he can't save the leaves and he goes home very sad with the last leave that was on the tree. The next day he wakes up and goes to his tree and is mesmarized by the sight of the tree.It's beautiful it's covered in icicles and shining in the morning sunlight.He asks the tree if it is okay and the tree in a sense answers him. The wind blows and the tree shakes and the icicles tingle.To Fletcher it sounds like the tree is laughing and he takes this to mean that the tree is alright. The illustrations are wonderful and the last one of the tree with the icicles is fabulous it is done with a type of glitter.Very pretty effect.I very much recommend this book ... Read more

Well Deserved Newbery Winner,But Some Reservations
Shiloh is the winner of the 1992 Newbery Medal, and it tells the story of Marty Preston, an 11-year-old boy, and his efforts to rescue a mistreated beagle, Shiloh. Though Marty believes Shiloh came to him for help, his father makes it clear that he must not interfere in their neighbor's business, even if that neighbor is Judd Travers, a thoroughly unlikable man who abuses his dogs. When Shiloh comes to him a second time though, Marty has to choose between his love for Shiloh or obedience to his father. Though I had to do some minor editing while reading aloud to my preschool-aged children, this is a very engaging story full of struggle, devotion, and suspense that had my son (and hubby) begging for more.Naylor expertly reeled us in from the first chapter as we got wrapped up in Marty's concern for Shiloh and she kept us expectantly turning the pages to find out what would happen next.

Olivia, like many young pigs, experiences life very intensely. She is utterly obsessed with having her mother make her a red soccer shirt (even though the team color is green), until, of course, she discovers that her favorite toy, her very best toy, is missing, at which point she becomes utterly obsessed with finding it. She looks under the rug, the sofa, and the cat. She shouts accusingly at both her younger brother Ian and her baby brother William, who responds with an unsatisfactory "Wooshee gaga." That night (a dark and stormy one), she hears a horrible sound emanating from behind a closed door, and, in a dramatic scene illuminated by her flaming candelabra and showcased in a fold-out spread, she sees the family dog Perry chewing her favorite toy to bits. As devastating as this is to a passionate young pig, "even Olivia couldn't stay mad forever." Olivia ...and the Missing Toy
Olivia is the kind of book that is never boring. My children ages six and two absolutely adore this book. Needles to say, that is one of those books you will always remember. We own all of them.

The Magnificent Olivia
The Olivia series of books is simply wonderful.Olivia is a very independent, strong-willed little pig who is not afraid of anything and the result is truly entertaining and very comical.My children love this book the best because it is very well written and with just the right emphasis on certain wording when I read it, they roll on the floor giggling hysterically.My daughter walks around quoting the book out loud as she has most of the book memorized because the children have asked me to read it to them so many times.

Olivia back again
In this thrid adventure we find Oliva once again exerting her individuality, demanding a new uniform color...so she can look different from the rest of the team. She then becomes further self-absorbed in a quest for her lost toy. Also in this installment we meet her father, a somewhat dotng pig, Olivia doesn't seem to mind.

very sweet - beautiful pictures
This book is kind of a throwback to the old days of comfortable, friendly hospitality between friends.It is perfect for all little girls and an excellent way to introduce the finer points of hospitality back into busy lives.It is also a board book, so it is very sturdy and a nice size for little hands.By 16 month old loves it now but I'm sure she will love it even more as she gets older.

Wonderful, with one caveat ...
I ordered this book as a birthday gift for my niece, who just turned 4 (and who loves to have frequent "tea parties"). I did not see the book, other than what's shown on this Amazon page, before I had it sent. After it arrived, my sister told me that it was a wonderful and adorable little book, and that my niece was delighted with it. However, there is one thing that I feel I should mention. The book details what goes on during a tea party, and on one page it says "we say a prayer of thanks to God." My sister and brother-in-law are a mixed-faith couple, and for a variety of reasons, they had decided to save issues of faith until my niece is a bit older. Regarding this book, my sister said that, after she reads it to my niece, "I'll probably need to explain God and praying." She didn't make it out to be a big deal -- and I'm sure there are many households in which four year old children have long since been introduced to praying and church. However, I felt I should mention this for those who would like to know. Personally, I rather wish the author hadn't added that part; unlike, say, a family dinner, you'd have to be pretty devout to consider saying grace a part of a preschooler's tea party. And in this day of many faiths and deity beliefs it seems a bit gratuitous and even (unintentionally) insensitive -- even if well-meaning. That's my opinion, of course, and this info is FYI. If a mention of God and prayer doesn't cause any complications, then this is a wonderful little book your little tea-party-giver will love.

Fun book
My 17 month old just loves this book.He loves lifting the flaps and seeing what animal appears.My only comment is I wished the flaps were made of a stronger, more durable paper.Overall a great book.It was recently listed in Parents magazine as "Our favorite baby books of all time."

Learned how to say No!
My son learned how to say no by reading this book.You are looking for Sally's puppy Spot in this book.There are flaps to open and different animals to discover behind each flap.The book takes you through different parts of the house asking "Is Spot in here".You open the flap and say "No".It's so cute!Definitely a good book for your child.

Billy Goats Gruff

My 21 month old son loves the story of the Billy Goats Gruff, at first we used to make up the story from what we remembered about it, but now with this book he can follow along and point at the troll hiding under the bridge. This is a heartwarming story of an elderly man and also of a mare lost in a winter snowstorm.For every previous Christmas the man and his wife had gone to the woods nearby and picked out the perfect Christmas tree.They would then take the tree back to their home and decorate it, but the crowning glory of each tree would be when she placed the star on it.He had lost his wife the previous spring and this was his first Christmas alone.He had not gone to pick out a tree because he had lost heart after his loss.

A Favorite
Very sweet book.I got this for my husband for Father's Day and it's a great addition to our library.

Simple, sweet, and touching
I just love these books.Anne Gutman's very, very simple tale is sweet and touching.The illustrations are by Georg Hallensleben, the same illustrator who did Gutman's Lisa and Gaspard series, and his slightly crude, yet charming use of color and quick seeming acrylic sketches are just brilliant.It's a vibrant book.Perfect for a toddler.I bought both of these for a friend's baby and I do hope the parents will enjoy them as much as the little girl will--Iknow I'd keep them if I could somehow justify having a book for babies in my library.

Fun with a book-loving monkey
"Curious George Visits the Library" is, as the title page notes, "Illustrated in the Style of H.A. Rey" by Martha Weston.In this tale, George--"a good little monkey and always very curious"--visits the public library with his friend, the man in the yellow hat.Chaos ensues as George frolics through the library, but it all ends happily. Curious George is in my favorite place!
Curious George is on another adventure.This time he's in my favorite place, the library.The man with the yellow hat has brought George to the library for story time.He likes the books but sees one on dinosaurs that he hopes the librarian reads next.He gets impatient, takes the book and runs off.This is the beginning of his adventure.He goes through the library finding neat books and making a big mess in the process.The boys and girls at the library, along with a volunteer help clean up the mess.In the end the man with the yellow hat helps George get a library card and they both check out lots of great books. Fun and hilarious adventure
Kate DiCamillo's MERCY WATSON FIGHTS CRIME provides the third pig tale in the series. Here Mercy hears a noise and discovers a thief is robbing the Watsons - a cowboy thief whose 'yippie-I-oh' can both lull a sleep to pig and wake up a sleeping household. Color drawings by Chis Van Dusen add fun and hilarious adventure to the tale.

Oh Mercy!We love this series but this title is not our favorite!
We absolutely adore the Mercy Watson series at our house.After throroughly enjoying the first two books in the series, we were eager to read this newest installment, Mercy Watson Fights Crime.Unfortunately, this book really scared my kids!The same ridiculous characters are all here and the tone is light, but the plot revolves around Mercy's reaction to and capture of a robber who has broken into the Watson house to steal (among other things) Mercy's beloved toaster.The concept of someone - a stranger, a robber, a bad guy - sneaking into our house in the middle of the night had never occured to my kids, and we had lots of questions and nervousness that night when we went to bed.What if someone like Leroy Ninker comes in our house tonight?Will he take my toys?What if I go downstairs and find him?Is the door locked?How did he get in?And on and on.So, while we wholeheartedly recommend the Mercy Watson series, I'm not sure this title is a great choice for kids on the younger end of the recommended age range of 4 through 8.

What a great new addition to our book shelf!
As a mom of a pink princess obsessed 4yr. old, this book is right up her alley! The story is fun and well written. I love this Sassie character! The illustrations are bright and eye catching, such a fun and whimsical book that my daughter hasn't let out of her sight! (let alone, let her younger sister even touch!) We've even decided we're going to buy another copy to donate to her preschool so they can fall in love with it as well!

One of the best children's book illustrations I have ever seen... BRAVO!!
I have been a fan of Dena's work for years. Sassafras's illustrations manage to capture the emotions of the spoiled pink poodle perfectly. The illustrations are colorful, whimsical, and utterly delightful. Some of the best children's book illustrations I have ever seen, and it is now my two children's absolutely favorite book.

Sassie is fabulous

What kid wouldn't want to read about a vampire bunny?
I don't care how old I get, I'm just not going to turn down a chance to read a book about a vampire rabbit, especially if it's told from the point of view of a dog.Good old Harold was pretty much living the good life until the introduction into the household of a cute wittle bunny wabbit the Monroes brought home with them from the movies one night.(Apparently a Dracula fan, the bunny was all settled in to watch the Count do his thing when one of the Monroe kids sat on him in the theater.)Little Bunnicula doesn't really bother Harold at all, since he sleeps all day and doesn't come between him and his treats.Harold's feline friend Chester, on the other hand, doesn't cotton to Bunnicula at all, seeing what no one else seems to notice - this bunny has fangs, and his coloration pattern sometimes makes it look like he's wearing a cape.Reading up on vampires while the Monroes sleep, Chester quickly becomes obsessed with getting this little bat in bunny's clothing out of the house as soon as possible - especially after healthy vegetables begin to show up completely drained of their color.

This is a great book.I have read it more than once.I especially like the white vegetables!I think that both boys and girls will like it.This is an interesting book because it helps you imagine how dogs and cats might think.The author of this book has a good imagination!

Bunniculee, Bunnicula, Bunniculee, Bunicula-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Children's librarians have to prepare for certain kinds of questions.When a child walks up to your Reference Desk, you need to be ready to get them the exact book they're looking for at the exact moment that they want it.I get a lot of young kids, mostly girls, who want a good vampire book of their very own.Aside from the usual "Vampire State Building" and "Dracula Is a Pain In the Neck", both by Elizabeth Levy, there's really not a lot out there to recommend wholeheartedly.In fact, nine times out of ten, I find myself suggesting that most accessible of vampirism books, "Bunnicula".It doesn't star a human vampire, but you can hardly blame me.Now just this past week I found myself in the unenviable position of needing to find lots and lots and lots of copies of a single book for the upcoming meeting of my homeschooler bookgroup.And what delightful chapter book did I have enough copies in my library branch to satisfy screaming hoards of homeschooled kiddies?Again, it's "Bunnicula" to the rescue.It may not seem at first glance to have earned itself the moniker of "classic children's book", but I can attest right here and right now that when it comes to lifesaving go-to titles, I'll take "Bunnicula" over "Bridge To Terebithia" or "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret", any day.

A Ukrainian boy named Nicki wants his grandmother Baba to knit snow-white mittens for him. Great Book
When I first saw this book I was not impressed - it seemed just ok.But my now 20 month-old daughter loves it. It is definitely one of her favorite books to read.

Walter the Farting Dog
Walter the Farting Dog is a great fiction book. Its authors are William Katzwinkle and Glen Muarry. Its main characters are the man at the yard sale, Walter, Betty, Billy, and the dad.
My son loved it
My son loves Walter.He is a typical boy and body noises and it just makes him laugh.He isn't a kid that likes to read, but with the Walter books he is willing sit down and read to me and actually enjoys it.
Didn't hold my interest like the first one did.
Walter is back but not with the same enthusiasm as the first book. I barely laughed at this book and was disappointed because I absolutely fell in love with William Kotzwinkle's original Farting Dog book. Arthur's Halloween
Arthur's Halloween is about Arthur who is afraid of pretty much everything. When Halloween comes, he is told he has to take his sister. When trick or treating the two get lost behind and D.W. goes in the so-called Witch House, and Arthur has to go get her. The book teaches that you shouldn't judge somebody by what other people tell you. This book is good for kids 4-8. I thought it was an ok book.
