5-0 out of 5 stars Love That Dog- Excellent!
A terrific book to teach kids, especially boys, about poetry and writing. A wonderful place to start. As a teacher I find this to be a book that everyone enjoys. Great for students up into their teens.

3-0 out of 5 stars POEMS
If you want a spectacular book this isn't quit for you. I didnt love this book because it is written in poetry and most of the parts are dull and boring. But it can Also be sad at times. When You think of Love That Dog would you think that it would be mostly about a dog but only half of the book talks about a dog and the other half talks about poems. So I guess this book is half and half but if you like battles and things like, once again this book isn't for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taylor age 12
Love that dog was the best book ever! It was written in poetry. When i read it, it really talked about Jack and his life and what he likes to do. When you read the book, trust me you will cry with amotions. If you love dogs and like good and adventure books than read love that dog. I would also suggest to read other books of Sharon Creeches. She is a great author and she really brings out the charocters and expreses there omotions and feelings. I suggest this book to all ages because it is the best book you could imagine! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!
Chowder had always been different. He really was like no other dog. He was quirky, not weird as other people thought of him. He wanted to be like the other animals, but he just wasn't. His people owners, the Wubbingtons, loved him dearly, but they were a little quirky themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chowder is my new best friend!
I absolutely adore Chowder! He is one of the most lovable little bull dogs. The story is so entertaining, i laughed out loud almost every page. The illustrations are fabulous and i love Chowders parents. This book is great, i really recommend it! Exellent job Peter Brown. I look forward to more Chowder stories in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very cute Fish out of Water Story
I enjoyed Brown's illustrations in "Flight of the Dodo" but didn't like the story that much, in this he has a great combination.Chowder is a dog who's not so doglike, and his owners indulge that. However, it makes it hard for him to have doggy friends--so he forms a plan to get friends at a local petting zoo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best new'dog' book for all ages ...
Along with Carl & Biscuit the dogs in this book are just too special to ignore.I currently work in the children's Dept. of a bookstore chain(& love dogs). When this title came in I had to look read it and make my co-workers look at it too. I have also noticed that it gets moved around quite a bit so people must be interested enough by the cover & subject to pick it up and look through it. When it comes out in 'paperback' it will fly off the shelves. It is just beautiful and so accurate for pups personalities.Love the 'poetry' rather than story line. I have told my people friends about what a cool book it is. It should be sold in pet stores & grooming shops and recommended by Veternarians etc.I'd like to see it sold in the 'pets' section of the store as well. A big THANK YOU to Patricia MacLachlan for this heartwarming collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must havefor dog loving parents and teachers!
The illustrations are both heartwarming and beautiful and capture the essence of each dog poem.Dog owners are sure to connect personality traits of their own pet to almost all of the poems. Each one, written in first person or, rather first dog.offers at least one craft element to support teaching young writers.Craft elements include font size, questioning, dialogue, use of space, voice of the poet, patterns in poetry and even a poem for two voices.I love it!The ONLY thing missing is a reference to the dog breeds illustrated. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My Senator And Me: A Dog's Eye View Of Washingion, D.C.
This book is delightful. A very cute book for kids to learn about how the Senate is run. Such a cute idea to use Ted's dog through the dog's eyes and voice. I'm not truly a Ted Kennedy fan, but this was very well written, and the illustrations are excellent. I hope he does a second book using both of his dogs. Children will love reading it, as well as adults. I buy them for my grand children and end up keeping some myself for my own collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a wonderful friendship!
As of this writing, there are some 20+ Henry & Mug books, each one a small masterpiece. However, this is the one that started it all!!5-0 out of 5 stars great for the reluctant reader
My son was reluctant to read in his elementary school days. This series caught his attention and by the time he finished all the books in the series that we could find he was intrigued enough with reading to go on to other books. Now, he is a high school senior with stellar SAT scores.I'll give partial credit to Henry and Mudge!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great series!
I just wanted to say that I unexpectedly found myself homeschooling my 1st grade son for part of the year and I have no idea what I would have done without Henry and Mudge! The series has really gotten my son's reading offthe ground. We have read every book in the series that we could get ourhands on and we're looking forward to new ones being released.Every bookin the series is well written, interesting and has just the right amount ofhumor without being outrageously silly. The Henry and Mudge series are myson's favorite books by far - they are great books for a beginning reader. ... Truly disappointing. This book, though well-intentioned, falls short of what I find to be compelling YA writing. There is a sense of illogic in this book and "over-writing" in many of the scenes within.

Editorial Review

"Harry was a white dog with black spots who liked everything, exceptgetting a bath." Taking matters into his own paws, he buries his family'sscrubbing brush in the backyard and runs away from home before they can wranglehim into the tub. Harry gets dirty playing in the street, dirtier at therailroad, and dirtier still playing tag with the other dogs. When sliding downthe coal chute, he actually changes from a white dog with black spots to a blackdog with white spots! Of course, by the time he gets home he is completelyunrecognizable to his family--even when he does all his clever flip-floppingtricks. In a stroke of doggy genius, he unearths the bath brush, begs for abath, and the rest is history. Youngsters will completely relate to the urge torebel, the thrill of getting dirty, and, finally, the reassurance of family.Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A CHILDHOOD CLASSIC
Harry the Dirty Dog is the quintessential children's book for young readers. With its eye- appealing illustrations and simple text, it is the perfect transition from guided reading to independent reading.A delightful trip back to the 50's (sans the conservative vibe and racial/ misogynistic stereotypes of the time), Harry the Dirty Dog is the story of a little dog who is so opposed to getting a bath that he takes matters into his own hands...Er, paws?Harry buries his scrubbing brush in the back yard and takes off from home. While he has a day full of fun adventures, Harry not only gets himself dirtier, but also realizes that while he doesn't like taking a bath, there are many things about his family that he misses. ... Editorial Review

Sounder is no beauty. But as a coon dog, this loyal mongrel with his cavernous bark is unmatched. When the African American sharecropper who has raised Sounder from a pup is hauled off to jail for stealing a hog, his family must suffer their humiliation and crushing loss with no recourse. To make matters worse, in the fracas, Sounder is shot and disappears. The eventual return of a tattered and emaciated Sounder doesn't change the fact that the sharecropper's oldest son is forced to take on man's work to help support the family. His transition to adulthood is paved by the rocks and taunts hurled at him by convicts and guards as he searches for his father. But along this rough road he ultimately finds salvation as well.Read more

Hi my name is John and I really liked this book.It is 'bout a boy and a dog. There was a sad.....part....I guess.....anyway the boy's dad anddog died in the end, but in the middle the dad stole a ham to feed the family ,and was caught, and put in prison to work in a mine. When the dad came home he had only one leg.I'll stop right there and let you find out the rest on your own.

1-0 out of 5 stars How can people possibley like this book?!?
I was looking forward to reading this book. It's supposed to be really good, and I'm only read a few books that I don't like. I can read almost anything, but this is the exception. Sounder was horrible and boring. It just dragged on and on and on, with no excitement. Yes, I know what the point is of writing the book, and I think, if it was better written with a better story, it would be a fine book. But it's not, so don't read it. It's a waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!
This book is really touching.Through all the hardships the family goes through they still survive.I love this book because it teaches me about an aspect of life that you can never give up no matter what.I think this book is good for all ages.It shows true love for an animal and shows that they are human beings too eventhough dogs are an animal they are your own which is why I cried when he ran away ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute best fun family entertainment
If you still like to read as a family and have kids in the middle to low elementary grades, this is the book for you.The characters are fun and the observations that the Director of Ranch Security, Hank the Cowdog, make are amazingly right on, given HIS perspective on life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Mutt Who Steals Your Heart
He's homely, he's not too bright, and he loves to boss around his pal, Drover. But as brilliantly portrayed by writer/narrator John R. Erickson, Hank the Cowdog is also loyal, brave, and downright hilarious. This first story in a series of several dozen, 'The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog' introduces us to Hank, and it isn't long before you get the impression that Mr. Erickson is a keen observer of dogs. Hank's misadventures will have not just the kids laughing, but the adults in your family as well. At one point, my sons owned a few dozen Hank the Cowdog cassettes and we spent many an hour listening along with them at Hank's antics. But along with all that laughter, we were always pleased at the subtle moral values the stories teach. So pull up a chair and listen along as John Erickson takes you into the 'tight circle' of Hanks' world. This is a 'can't miss' selection for children of all ages. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars sort of weird
I read this book while waiting around at the doctor's office. To me, it seems like a fable about impotence. just reread it with that in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite childhood book
When I was little, I would read this book once a day. I'd always cry in the beginning when the book talks about how sad Duke is, being all chained up, and I'd giggle when Sammy Brown came to get him, and cry again when Sammy Brown said he was going to send Duke back, so he couldn't dig anymore. This story touched my heart as a child, and I know I will read it to my future children. I suggest this book for any parent with a young child of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars
Poor Duke the dog had spent his whole life on `a bare, hard floor of stone', until the day Sammy Brown decided to buy him and take him home to his farm. Duke was overjoyed to be out of the pet store, or at least he was until Sammy called the neighbor hood dogs over and they started digging. Since Duke had spent all of his life on a stone floor, he couldn't dig, and when the dogs disowned him felt as if he had let both himself and Sammy down. The next day Duke tried again, and he managed to dig! He was so excited that he started digging, and digging, and digging. "[He] dug up the fence. [He] dug up the gates. [He] dug up the garden of Mrs. Thwaites." Duke only stopped digging when he found Sammy looking down on him. Sammy wasn't pleased, and told Duke that he was going back to the pet store. To escape Sammy and the other dogs (who had come with Sammy) Duke dug straight down, creating a well, from which the dogs helped to rescue him. As soon as he was out of the well, he ran back and fixed the mess he made in the town. Now Duke still lives with Sammy, and he does the plowing.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers
This book is interactive without the use of batteries or electronics.Small children love to lift the flaps to answer the questions posed by the text. The one drawback of this particular edition is the size.It very large for younger children (2-3 years old)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for young toddlers
We were delighted to find this larger and longer "lift the flap" book for our 18 month old daughter. She has been enamored with all the books in the Spot series, and has enjoyed lifting flaps since she was less than a year old! This book is just wonderful because there are about three flaps to open per page, and the pictures are large and the paper is sturdy. It's so fun to read with your toddler and teach them about animal sounds, colors, shapes and numbers. The big size of the book makes it a little less portable and harder for small children to hold on their own, but we have spent many fun hours together reading this book.My daughter's eyes still light up when we get it off the shelf.I highly recommend this for everyone!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interactive Fun for Toddlers
Eric Hill's Spot books are wonderful fun. Instead of his usual, gentle storyline here he gives kids lots of animals, colors, numbers and shapes to explore by lifting the many sturdy flaps. His drawing style is so appealing that children can't help but get into it. My 23 month old will often sit and "read" the whole book on her own, carefully lifting each flap and remembering the words out loud. We have several Spot books and they are all favorites. ... Hachiko is a wonderful young puppy who lives with his master, Professor Ueno. Each morning the Professor tells Hachiko these same words, as he boards the train: "What a good dog you are. I just feel so bad about what people in the book had to go through. he steels and lies and never bothers to help anyone! if you like the first book you'll like all of them! ... Read more
