Editorial Review

Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and children's picture book author Berkeley Breathed crafts a remarkable, hilarious, and yes, even poignant celebration of "flawed dogs": "The bent and plain,/ The unbalanced bod,/ The imperfect people/ And differently pawed." At the core of this "2004 Catalogue of the Piddleton Dog Pound's Very Available Leftovers" is Heidy Strudelberg, "Garbo, Joan of Arc, and Mother Teresa of the nation's unwanted dogs: a reclusive warrior-saint of poundpups." Breathed reveals how Heidy was ousted from the high-falutin’ vanity dog breeding world when she awarded a muddy three-legged street mutt the Westminster Best in Show ribbon. Now, it seems, Heidy has retreated to the Vermont mountains to run the Last Chance Dog Pound, where defective dogs go for one more attempt at getting adopted. The bulk of Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Scary and disturbing
I found this book scarily disturbing and I wouldn't permit my childen to see it.

3-0 out of 5 stars For mature kids? Maybe
Flawed Dogs is truly a work of art. Great illustrations. This is the 2004 catalogue of the PIDDLETON DOG POUND's very available leftovers who just *may* have some minor blemishes. We have everything from the dog who's all tongue to the hairball that calls itself a dog. There's a tatooed dog and a teeny dog, an old fart of a dog and a three footed dog. Almost guarenteed to give you at least one (if not more) good laugh!
1-0 out of 5 stars Not for a gift, not bedtime reading, not for anyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars another Henry and Mudge
Another Henry and Mudge... we love the series (have everything offered in paperback), but this one wasn't quite up "Henry and Mudge and the Green Time" or "Henry and Mudge and the Happy Cat".My son, nevertheless, wants to make me a funny lunch next Mother's Day.If you love the series, get it.If you are new to Henry and Mudge, start with some of the first books in the series.

Like other books by this author the pictures are imaginative and interesting. This is a great gift for any age, so long as the giftee has a sense of humor.

Silly pictures that provide cues for text ("hot dog", with a picture of a chili pepper dog and a fire).Great for the a 3-5 year old who can memorize and connect pictoral clues, and will boost their confidence/interest in reading.Or for the dog lover or garde manger chef who just needs a laugh :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Book
The illustrations in this book are hilarious, The text is perfect for children that are just starting to read.Simple one syllable words with two to three words per page. But the best part of this book is the illustrations, I just love them. The dog spends the entire book hot and trying to cool off. Every attempt he makes fails until the very end. You find your yourself rooting for the dog. This is one of my son't favorite books, he wants to read it every night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buscuit Story Book
A total delite. The stories are just long enough and adorable for children. They are also illustrated wonderfully and all mygrandchildren love them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect little books!
This is a wonderful collection of about 10 "Biscuit" stories. We recently discovered "Biscuit" and my 2 year old daughter (and I!) have become smitten with him!I have been trying to get as many Biscuit books as I can find! "Biscuit" stories are really very short and very simply written, cheerful, sweet, innocent tales of puppy mischief - perfect for bedtime. We read two books every night, and it is always a favorite when it's a "Biscuit" book. The illustrations also really make the book - the colors are soft, and even the paper feels nice.It is nice to have a collection of several stories in one book like this, but I would say that the book is rather heavy and not easy to hold while lying down, so I think we prefer the individual story books. Either way, it's a real gift for a young child to have a Biscuit story read to them.Buy this! ... Read more

I like this book because something bad would always happen, but Henryand Ribsy would always find a way around it. Although a boy would understand this book more,I liked this book alot. If you understand dogs no matter what they do, you will like this book a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Ribsy
Henry and Ribsy is a great realistic fiction kids book by Beverly Cleary for boys/girls at ages 10-14.It's about a boy and his dog, Ribsy, that are best friends. The boy, Henry, wants to go fishing with his dad, but to go fishing he has to keep his dog out of trouble for two weeks.Scooter, his friend, said "You won't catch a fish", but Henry thinks he'll land a huge fish. The only thing standing in his way was Ribsy.Find out if he gets to go fishing or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for kids up to the age of four
I read this book at the toy store on Thursday.I wanted to buy it for my four-year-old cousin. He has Spot Goes to the Park, Spot Goes to the Beach, and Spot's Baby Sister. In this book, Spot bakes a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving with Sam's best pumpkin.Toward the end of the book, Grandma and Grandpa come over for Thanksgiving dinner and give Spot a pilgrim hat.I suggest this book to kids up to four years of age.

4-0 out of 5 stars Doggone Good
The only drawback about adoring the Spot the dog series is that my children continue to hunger for more. Finally Eric Hill has thrown us another bone. Spot's Thanksgiving dishes up bold, playful color and simple text ideal for toddler read-alouds or older children read-alongs.This particular tale stresses sentiments fitting for this holiday: manners (Spot helps his mom in the kitchen with the pumpkin pie), quality time with family (Grandpa and Grandma come for dinner) and patriotism (an American flag waves from the center of the pie). While this book did not have the popular lift-the-flaps found in other Eric Hill books, such as the newly released Spot's Treasure Hunt or in Spot Can Count, my daughters (ages 3.75 and 2 years) still requested it again and again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is one of Wegmans greatest books, with the use of the 20 x 24 camera he is able to achieve some of the most amazing outdoor photography. 2-0 out of 5 stars A Real Let-Down
As a fan of William Wegman's for years now I always enjoy his works on some level. Unfortunately, this is not one of his best attempts. The photographs are often repetitive andsometimes make it difficult to see the dogs. The pictures really don't work when the wolf is dressed asgrandmother. It is hard to understand how Little Red Riding Hood canexclaim how different the wolf's eyes and ears look when they look exactlylike her grandmother's. I also had some problems with the story, particularly the ending. The changes were disconcerting and I found theepilogue, in particular, a real let down. I think Wegman's version ofCinderella worked much better than this story did. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Clifford's Thanksgiving Visit
This book was about a big red dog named Clifford whose owners go away during thanksgiving. So he decides to go visit his mom who lives not too far away. While on his way there he encounters some challenges like traffic, a bridge while it is beginning to go up, a train, and a parade. The lesson of this book is that family is important and that you need to be thankful. The age level of this book is about 5-7. I thought this book was good because it will teach kids what thanksgiving is really about.

5-0 out of 5 stars I see light at the end of the tunnel
I am so thankful for this book.I was desperatley searching for help. I ordered 3 books. Two were beautiful paperbacks and then this little paper back. I threw it aside because i didnt like the way it looked (small book and printing was small) After reading the 1st 2 and being very disapointed i finally picked up this one, and i was hooked. For once a book that not only offers suggestions but gives you steps to accomplish them. My son is 7 and adopted (at birth)has ADHD, ODD and some fetal alcohol problems. Nothing seemed to work and i was losing all hope of ever having any peace in our home. The hold down method seemed somewhat extreme but i had no luck with making him stay in time out. I decided to do exactly what the author suggested and i was determined to take it as far as i needed. I had to hold him for a solid 2 1/2 hours the first time. He tryed biting, cursing, spitting and anythng else he could do to get me angry. He was shocked that nothing he could do seemed to upset me. (on the outside anyway)The rest of the day went well. The next morning i was praying that he wouldn't hit anyone again because i was so sore i wasn't certain i could hold him down. Well, he did and i had to hold him again. This time i only had to do so for 1 hour and 10 minutes, the next day 20 minutes and that was 6 weeks ago. I havent had to do it again until yesterday, and that one was an amazing 5 minutes. He has been more loving toward me than i could ever imagine. He wants to be with me and it is enjoyable. The book suggests that you use this with only 1 or 2 of the biggest issues. Ours was hitting anyone he walked by. This is to establish authority in the home. Children with ODD tend to put themslves on the same level as adults.Children need to be secure knowing that they have boundries. I used to let him get away with things because i couldn't find away to keep him from it. I walked on eggshells to keep any confrontation from happening. I am certain now that he wasn't secure and was crying out for me to set boundries for him. My have big hopes for my son. He is the next generation and i cannot allow him to continue down that road of destruction. It may seem extreme to some but ODD is not just being hard to get along with. It's the toughest thing i have ever dealt with. I have 3 married children, have fostered 52 and adopted 3. ODD is real and one of the hardest types to deal with. You are not sterotyping your child but doing something for him that will enable him to get along in the real world. God doesn't let his children get away with things. The Bible says that the Lord disciplines those he loves. It isn't alway plesant but it is always for our best. I ordered another for my sons teacher. Of course there are things she can't do but many others she can and we can work together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth owning
I happened upon this book at the library when I was desperately trying to deal with my 2 yr-old's tantrams, hitting, unsocial behavior. I think it is fabulous. As many others have said here, the authors offer great techniques and the couple of pages of "brain dead phrases" appear to be incredibly useful for now and for the future. I found many of the ideas in here so important that I want to own the book so I can refer to it any time. I also have a feeling those "brain dead" phrases are going to be a life-saver as my daughter grows up. Definitely get this book if you need some great ideas to help refocus your parenting skills, time, effort and want to change your child's anti-social frustrating behavior.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Practical Advice
Our 8YO was recently diagnosed with PDD (a form of autism) and his psychologist recommended this book.I'm usually skeptical about these things, so I was a little hesitant. But I'm happy to say that the advice in this book was very good.I like the idea of parents having the tools to cope with difficult children while not having to resort to physical punishment or yelling. It's all about keeping your cool and being 1-step ahead of your difficult child (who as in our case, and in probably most cases, is highly intelligent and knows exactly how to press buttons). The best thing we could do for our children (especially the difficult ones) is teach them responisibility and consequences for their actions....either that, or they'll learn it the hard way in the "real world".I've already recommended this book to friends and will continue to do so. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Tasha Tudor
Nothing pleases me more than to open the pages of "Corgiville Fair" and marvel at Ms Tudor's ability to create a magical, mythical world of corgis, goats, cats, bunnies and boggarts. The story is so dear, the illustrations are truly inspired, and the boggarts are personalities a reader will never forget. This is a treasure for any child's or adult's library; as a child I wanted nothing more than to be able to live 'west of New Hampshire and east of Vermont' in the wonderful, cozy world of Corgiville.

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad to see it's still in print
This was my all time favorite book when I was a child.I went on line, hoping to at least find a used copy for a friend's baby... and am thrilled to find that it is still in print! It's a great children's story, full of wonderful characters, with great illustrations.Very charming.I loved it as a child, and am glad to get to replace my old copy with a new one for my son.

Not merely one of the finest children's book artists, but one of the finest naturalist artists period. This book well showcases her sense of whimsy as well as her eye for detail. Add to that her obvious love for her corgis, and you've got a book that is a can't miss! ... Read more

Dear Mrs. LaRue
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this Book - by Dog Reviewer
Mom read this book to me and I loved the pictures, they were so colorful I tried to eat them. I don't blame Ike for taking exception to obedience school - doesn't Mrs. LaRue recognize that she has a wire fox terrier and we wires are inately naughty and disobedient! It's in our genes!Mrs LaRue should have gotten a German Shephard or a Rottweiler if she wanted a good dog!I highly recommend this book to my canine friends.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sorry...I don't like Dear Mrs. LaRue
It's only my opinion and no one agrees, don't belive me, I'm just a tiny voice, no one shares my opinion, so don't bother me, so if you like it, set your opinion free. Write a review wheather you're big or small or short or tall cuz' if you're small, use the kids review form. Click the "Write a review" link and choose "Use the kid's review form". Anyways, I think Ike, the dog in this book, is a liar. His owner, Mrs. LaRue, sends him to a wonderful obidience school but he wants to go home so what does he do? Send letters to Mrs. LaRue saying it's an awful prison! What? This encoruges lies! Maybe it dosen't encourage lies, but I didn't like Ike. Most children & their parents will love it. The rest of my family (Including Chocolate Dog, Russian Blue Witch, and JaneLovesJesus) love it, they think it's cute (that's why mom got it from the library, it looked cute) but I don't. Don't trust me, I'm a small voice in a sea of voices. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!" (Except this review.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic right along with Dr Seuss
Big Dog ... Little Dog was probably the first book I read on my own. 20 years ago my uncle read all of P D Eastman's stories to me and now I get to read these same stories to his children. The illustrations are beautiful and the stories just as wonderful. No child should grow up without hearing these stories just once.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Hank the Cowdog
Hank the cowdog is about a dog named Hank and he lives in a farm.Everything is going right fo Hank because he is the leader of the dogs and nobody ever dared to talk back to him until one day another dog named Rufus came to take over. Then Rufus starts making fun of Hank for having crossed eyes (he got crossed eyes because he tried to see the part where his nose had no skin on it).One time Rufus was acting like Hank (imitating Hank)and Hank ran away.Hank confronted (met) snakes and big birds which he had trouble with.Hank had to deal with Rufus.Do you think he (Hank) might get away with still being the leader?,well if you keep on reading the ending you will know.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great series for developing readers
My ten year old son is a rapidly developing avid reader who has fallen absolutely in love with this excellent series. Erickson creates rapid narratives filled with honest (and yes, corny) humor and pleasently comic action and an occasional moral or two. 5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting!
This is my all time favorite Hank the Cowdog book!I love Madam Moonshine and Wallace and Junior. It's witty and humorous throughout the book.I'm impatiently waiting for #34 to come out.I recomend any of these books tochildren and adult alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't eat the dog biscuits. They are for measuring.
Lisa has a homework assignment. She needs to measure something. Why not Penny? She uses standard units of measurement, such as inches and centimeters, along with non-standard units of measurement, such as dog biscuits and herself, to measure her dog Penny, and other dogs too. She conducts weight comparisons of dogs with the use of a teeter-totter, and then she takes Penny home to conduct volume measurements with food and water. The illustrations are done in a simple and direct way to help children understand the concept of units of measurement. This is an outstanding book.

I loved this book. The book was so fun.Kids love this book because it has to do with dogs.It was very easy to read and to understand all of the measurements.Kids get into the book and want to go measure their own dog or cat at home.I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it to anyone who has to teach measuring to their kids or their class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for teaching measuring!
I used this book with my kindergarteners and they adored it!They already knew Penny from the book about maps so they were excited to listen to a Penny book in math.We used it as our starting point to get an overview on measurement and then went back to specific sections of the book to learn about each type of measurement. When Lisa used herself as a measuring tool, the students used their bodies as measuring tools. When Lisa used dog biscuits to measure Penny, we measured things in the room with dog biscuits. There are so many ways to do the things that Lisa does in the classroom and bring this book, and measuring, alive! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We love Hairy Maclary!
These books are all wonderful. We bought the entire series a number of years ago when we were living in London and have read one or more Hairy books every night for years. The vocabulary is wonderful, much more varied than you normally find with other books for young children, and the illustrations are terrific.I can't recommend this entire series highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for 2-yr-old (and her mommy!)
We've been reading the Harry Maclary books since my daughter was about nine months old, and they continue to be favorites at bedtime. This one (which I guess was the first one) has the usual list of characters, and we have the greatest time giving each his own voice and personality each time we read it.It's fun for me to try to make it different, and my daughter has great fun with it too.The book takes several characters who are chasing Harry Maclary home "with their eyes on the bone", and they gradually fall out of the chase for various reasons.Very cute!Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun illustrations, good repeating and rhymes, great early reading
These are great fun books, sly and funny which kids and adults can both enjoy. Lynley Dodds writes and illustrates this series of books, which I think began with this one and so you can find the same characters in other books too. The rhymes are great, and they are repeated so littlies quickly get the idea of what is coming next.
