Editorial Review

Dominic is a one-of-a-kind dog. One day this exuberant, restless, freedom-loving fellow decides there isn't enough going on in his neighborhood to satisfy his need for adventure. And off he goes, with an assortment of hats (rakish, dashing, solemn, and martial), his precious piccolo, and a few other things, leaving a note on his door: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Astounding
Throughout my life, I'd always remembered the "first book I ever read" as about some dog who played the piccolo and traveled around with his possessions in a sack on a stick. I remembered it so fondly, like one of those few, golden memories you hold onto from childhood, when you still believed in the tooth faerie and unicorns.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best children's book ever!
This was the first "real book" I remember reading as a little boy.I suppose I was about 6 or 7.I read and re-read Dominic many times and loved it more each time.I suppose it has be something like 35 years since I first read this book and I still remember it fondly. How many things can you say that about?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book for my 7 year old because his name is also Dominic. I read it to him each night before bed. He really liked it. Dominic (the dog) is a very witty dog who gets through many different adventures. I actually enjoyed reading this book to my son. This book is positive and definitely gets kids to use their imaginations! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SO MUCH PACKED INTO ONE LITTLE BOOK - REMARKABLE!
There is so much to this book than noted at first glance.First, we get a great dose of history told in a way children can understand it.Secondly, we learn some little known facts about our first president.Thirdly, we have animals, something neither kids nor adults can ever get enough of and fourthly, we get a story packed full of morals. But that is not all.The illustrations are very well executed and a delight. The text is simple an to the point and goes quite well with the illustrations. The book makes some very complicated situations and states them simply in a very nice story.I enjoy this one almost as much as the children do.This is a good work to read to the class as it generates good discussions.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6--Year-Old (and I) Loved It
My six-year-old son brought this title home from his school library. We read it together several times, and one night I found him meticulously copying a page from the book. My son hated to return the book, and I knew I had to buy it--for both of us! It tells a little-known story about Washington in a charming, beautifully illustrated manner that everyone (especially dog lovers) will love.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story for George Washington's Birthday!
I used this title with a class I teach to American children overseas. They really enjoyed it as a read-aloud and couldn't believe that it was true!I like that the back page had a copy of the original note sent as well as photos of drawings/paintings of Howe and Washington. The illustrations aren't spectacular, but the children loved it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
My daughter loves this book. The pictures are really cute. From about age 1, she would point to the various animals and we would make the animal noise. As she got older she can try to say the name of the animal in both English and French. This is a fantastic book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old's favorite!
This is amongst my 2 year old son's favorite books, many of which are Spot books. He can recite the entire thing. It's a cute story about Spot meeting his friends, playing with them, losing his ball in the park, and encountering a new friend who is able to retrieve the ball. We love it! Five Stars!

3-0 out of 5 stars Spot Goes to the Park
The Book is about Spot the dog. In the book he goes to the park and meets some of his friends there. Spot and his friends play with a ball, and while playing with the ball it hits someone, and it also goes into the water. The ball got them into a little trouble, but they now need to get the ball out of the water.3-0 out of 5 stars not much park vocabulary
My son, almost two, likes this enough to read it, but it is not a favorite. I was disappointed because there's not much "park" vocabulary in it at all, which is what we were looking forward to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful departure from the ordinary Hank format
Just when I was convinced that John Erickson was stuck forever on his rigid formula of Hank the Cowdog books that always had 12 chapters lasting between 9 and 15 minutes apiece in their audiobook format, he comes and surprises me with an *audio only* series of shorter stories. Having enjoyed Hank since childhood and never having seen any Hank stories that departed from Erickson's normal formula, I didn't know quite what to expect, but I needn't have worried. It's a thoroughly enjoyable story with plenty of laughs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages
Gary Paulson's Dogteam is a beautifully written prose poem that describes a dogteam's running on a cold winter's night. As the author takes the reader across the moonlit trail, the sensory, descriptive words make you feel you are truly on the trail with the team. The watercolor illustrations by Ruth Wright Paulson capture the eagerness the dogs feel for running at night. I use this book with third grade students to model the use of descriptive language in writing. The children love the book and read it over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
Beautiful illustrations and vivid, descriptive sentences! I purchased this book to teach my first graders about descriptive writing. They were in awe of the book! Living in the south, most of them have never even seen snow or even heard of dog sledding. After having been dog sledding myself I knew I had to find a way to share the experience and this book was it! It is truly one of my favorites!

4-0 out of 5 stars Taking your dogsled on a moonlit night run
Author Gary Paulsen ran the Iditarod dogsled race across Alaska twice, so when he says "Nothing in running dogs is quite so beautiful as a night run," he knows of what he speaks. We have a dog sled race up in this neck of the woods each year, and I have watched sleds racing along a wooded path by moonlight. That experience is captured in "Dogteam," as Paulsen tells of the experience in a prose poem that tries to communicate to the rest of us what it is like to run your dogs through the snow to get home on a cold night with a full moon. The illustrations, by Ruth Wright Paulsen, are done in ink and watercolor. She manages a seventy-dog kennel and helps train Iditarod dogs with her husband, Gary, so you have to look at these drawings and wonder which of their charges have ended up in this book. This is a book that those who love Huskies and the sight of them mushing through the snow, will enjoy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I really LOVE the fuzzy part
The story is decent enough, but what I really like is the furry part. You see, the front of the book is the dog and he has real hair. I don't know if its carpet or sheep hair, but it's hairy and soft. I like to rub my face on it. It's nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doggie Lovers Will Love Good Dog
I bought this book for my brother for his birthday specifically because he has West Highland Terriers like the dog on the cover. He also appreciates good artwork. When I got the book I showed it to my parents, who are also dog lovers, and we all giggled out loud at the wonderfully hilarious poems and the sweet, funny illustrations. The pictures are suitable for framing. The book is marvelous and it put a big smile on our faces, just like the smile on the dog on the last page! Oh yeah, my brother loved the book too, and couldn't wait to read the poems to his Westies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Dog
Absolutely as charming and original in text--which is perfectly matched in illustration-- as any children's book I have seen in too long.Gottfried's text soars in imaginative flight to capture canine essences, and should elicit the same enthusiasm from any child and adult. I was truly impressed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for dog lovers
A nice combination of fine art and prose poetry for the younger reader and especially for dog lovers! The paintings are simple and the dogs are very expressive. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great job, Kasza!
My two-year-old daughter and I love Keiko Kasza's books. When I found out about this book, I made a trip to the library and checked it out right away. This story is really cute and very funny. The illustration is a bit different from Kasza's other books. The pictures look more like a cartoon than those in her other books. It became my daughter's favorite book right away. We have to read it everyday, at least 3 times a day. We once made a record of 7 times in one day. It turns out that she can read the whole book herself. She can memorize every single word. She particularly loves to howl "Haoooooooooo..." just like the dog, Moka, and the wolves. It's such an outstanding book: excellent story and wonderful illustration. Great job, Kasza! ... Read more

Editorial Review

We would follow Stephen Huneck's black Labrador, Sally, anywhere--to thebeach, to the mountains, and certainly to thefarm. The Sally books are wonderfully witty glimpses into the simple psyche of adog, where exciting new smells and tastes reign supreme. Sally first meets thegolden Lab Molly, and after a comical round of introductory sniffing, her newfriend proceeds to introduce her to Bessie the cow, who squirts them with milk. The doggy duo then eats like pigs, horses around, plows a field, and narrowlyescapes a goosing. Each oversized illustration explodes with generous, boldlycolored woodcut prints, as Huneck artfully captures the gorgeous stripedgeometry of farmland and fences--along with amusing canine antics. Simplesentences in a large clear font (designed by the artist himself) ensure smoothsailing and happy endings for early readers, but adults will enjoy the dry humorof these books just as much as kids will. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very simple,Very clever, Very funny
This book is for dog lovers and kids. Its great pictures and simple phrases exactly describes what our black lab does (right down to the 'worried' look on her face!), and therefore we found this book very funny. However we have shown this book to non dog lovers. They just give polite smiles/puzzled looks and change the subject!! So I guess if you know what catagory your in you'll know whether or not this book is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Yet in Huneck's Series!
Delightful! Colorful! Enchanting! Stephen Huneck knows exactly what dogs think and what they love to do! Sally has certainly been on some wonderful adventures, to the beach and to the mountains, but going to the farm is just the most humorous and delightful story yet. The artist's charm and wit is magical. Everyone will love this book! And the woodcut prints that illustrate the books are absolutley fabulous! Anyone with a love for dogs, colorful art, or humor should buy this book (...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Bed Time Book
My daughters are fans of Todd Parr's series, Todd World, so they begged me to buy this book. This plucky dog with an active imagination who doesn't feel like going to bed isn't Benny, the dog from the TV show, but he's very similar.Though even if you aren't familiar with the Todd World characters, how could you fall in love with Otto? It's a great story of bed time routines and how thinking about all the things one likes to do can lead to pleasant bedtimes and even better dreams. The illustrations are bold, colorful and happy. My preschoolers love everything about this book and so do I, quite frankly.I can't tell you how many times I've read it at bedtime and still, every time this book gets picked out (and it happens a lot) it is always a joy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
Todd Parr really gets it right. We love his illustrations and straightforward text.I like this book even better than the "Do's and Don't's" books that we've come to know well. This one is cute enough that the kids get it and the adults can grin as well.Easy, sweet, silly, fun to look at.My four-year-old adores it -- an instant favorite. Our most-loved page is when Otto brushes his teeth with "chicken flavored toothpaste." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Old Favorite
I love this one! Poor Harry doesn't like the roses on his new sweater from Grandma. He keeps trying (and failing) to "lose" it, and becomes depressed. His mood is saved by a bird that swoops in to unravel the sweater for a nest - and Grandma sends Harry a new, better sweater in the end, so everyone winds up happy. Great muted colors and "retro"-style illustrations, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging reading
My 4 year old daughter loves reading this book by herself; she just can not get enough. It is a lovely companion book to Harry and the Lady Next door.
