3-0 out of 5 stars Dogsong
As an Eskimo boy journeys to find himself, he must survive the harsh conditions of the frozen tundra. When Russel realizes he is unhappy with his way of life, he goes to an old Eskimo named Oogruk for help.Oogruk teaches him how the old Eskimos once lived and then, giving him his five dogs and a sled, tells him that in order to become a man, he must leave the village and travel north. He takes the dogs and does just that, only stopping to make camp at night and during storms, until he realizes he needs to find food.Luckily, the dogs pick up the scent of a herd of caribou and, with their help, he is able to kill four using the bow and arrows Oogruk gave him. They keep traveling and one day come across snowmobile tracks which lead them to a snowmobile that had run out of gas.Beside it, there are footprints that lead them to a pregnant woman lying in the snow.Russel makes a shelter and revives her back to health. She tells him her name is Nancy and decides to join them on their journey.Soon they run out of food and, when they are on the brink of starvation, Russel is fortunate enough to take down a polar bear with a lance.Soon after, though, he finds that Nancy is sick and they start off towards the nearest village for help.Dogsong is a captivating story filled with adventure.

It stars by telling you about Russel (An Eskimo boy) That goes back to the old days and tries to find the songsof the old daysbecause they (Eskimos) gave them up so they wouldn't go to hell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book in the Touch and Feel Series-my toddler loves it!
My toddler loves any Touch and Feel book-he got his first for Easter last year and I think there's only 4 or 5 we don't have yet. They're sturdy and a great size for toddlers to read, we even throw a couple in the diaper bag when we're out. They're short enough to keep a toddler's attention and filled with bright photographs of familiar things and simple, easy to read concepts.Although as some people have mentioned on this or other books reviewed, they do have some repititous textures and ideas, but I think that most toddlers won't care about that-mine doesn't anyway-he loves them.
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite baby gift.
I just love ALL the books in this series. My children just loved them when they were little, and if you've ever had babies you know how valuable a good book is -- you get to sit down for a while! They were fun for me to read and really fun for them to explore. In fact, I've already packed them away in their hope chests for when they grow up and have children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for dog-loving kids
I got this book as a hand-me-down from a friend, whose 4-year-old and 2-year-old boys had failed to destroy it. That alone says a lot about the durability of this book, and its tactile pieces. My son, who is 16 months, loves this book. He likes to touch all the different tactile pieces: the furry puppy chest (my son's favorite), the silky dog ears, the fuzzy slipper, the rubber ball (my least favorite), and the leathery puppy noses (my favorite). The pictures are adorable. There aren't many words per page, so the book might lose its appeal for older, more experienced readers. But it's great for younger kids (under 4). ... Read more

My 8 year old son and I loved it. We first had a hard time getting into it and then we didn't want to put it down. Highly recommend to third graders and their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newfies & Joan Hiatt - Unbeatable Combination
I read this book to our 7 year old grandson over our vacation at the beach (OBX)last summer. With Annie, our Newfoundland dog at our feet, the story came to life, for all of us. (Annie just snoozed) I thoroughly enjoyed "translating"some of the "Newfieisms" and expanding on the relationships which the author presents. If you enjoy reading to kids, I wholeheartedly recommend Ms. Hiatt's books. Granddad And the kids enjoyed them immensely. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Polo
This book is amazing. I am well over the suggested age to read this book, yet Polo still managed to take me from my reading chair into an amazing world where all things are possible. I highly recommend this book for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Charming
This is an incredibly enjoyable book that both you and your child(ren) will love. The age range says 4-8, but my three year old was an instant fan after one "read".Since there are no words and only many clever and charming illustrations, kids can easily follow along. Not only that, both the reader and the "readee" can add their own details to the unfolding story, only enhancing its appeal.I can't wait to get my hands on more Polo books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever-Just right for girls!
Hello, I am 8 years old.We had a book fair at my school.I couldn't find anything, but finally I found this book.I looked at some of the pictures and I decided to buy it.I couldn't stop reading it, it was soooooo good!My homework is to read 20 minutes a day, but one day I read 120 minutes because this book was so good!I love this book, you have to read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite childhood book!
My daughter just turned 8 and I was over the moon when I found out that No Flying in the House was still in-print after all these years. I'm an avid reader as an adult and this book was one of the very first to inspire me to love reading! I've never forgotten it. Hat's off to Betty Brock for writing such a magical book that is bound to inspire a new generation of readers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Matthew's review
I did not like No flying in the House. It wasn't very interesting. It's about a girl that is half fairy and half person. She had a dog that knew about 367 tricks and could talk. It was a little boring.I would sort of recommend this book.If you like fairy stories you would probably like this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kids Love This Book
When I was a working librarian, I read this books (and the others)to my storytimes. When I retired I started to volunteer in an inner city school. I was not certain how the children would react to the book. I am now in my sixth year reading to Preschool, Kindergarten and First Grade. They hear the first four books each year and they always ask me to repeat the books. The line about "no one had ever asked him to come in" always gets a great response. I think everyone should read these McDuff books. So many classes can't be wrong!

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't take a bite out of crime.Just out of shortbread.
Dear old Rosemary Wells. If you've ever read her books about that famous bunny Max or classic titles like, "Morris' Disappearing Bag" then you know that her stories, while disjointed, can often be truly charming works of preschool art.So when I discovered the McDuff books (written by her but illustrated by someone else entirely) I was ill at ease.I mean, Wells draws such cute little bunnies. How could anyone else adapt to her words? On reading the first book of the McDuff series, "McDuff Moves In", I was amazed to find myself suddenly on the oposte side of the fence. The pictures in this book are really quite charming. From the cute little Scottie named McDuff to the 1950s setting, visually this story's a charmer. But strange as it may seem, Wells's words are out-of-place here.Though a brief tale with little in the way of plot, somehow this book is not as direct or understandable as it might be.A pity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I own this book, as well as others in the series. They are just great! My mom owns a Westie, perfectly named Duffy(he got the name before we new about the books), and the illustrator captures the essence of the Westie. Every picture is perfectly drawn to show the character of a Westie. I love the author as well. I have been a teacher and have always read Ms. Wells' books to my students and the McDuff series is loved by all. McDuff moves in is just a fun book to read and I recommend it to all ages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Wonderful Book
I am a big fan of Haven Kimmel's adult fiction, so I decided to buy this children's book.I LOVED Orville:A Dog Story.I loved it so much that I actually became choked up at the end and could barely read the last two sentences out loud to my son. This has never happened to me before.
5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book
This book is such a gift -- to animal lovers, to children, to their parents, to book lovers. It tells a moving tale in exquisite prose, and the illustrations are perfect for the story -- they're beautiful and evocative without being overpowering.I can't recommend this book more highly, for both adults and children.5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down
I work in a library and was looking at this book to catalog it. Usually I just look at a few pages of children's books, but I had to read this one from cover to cover. It really is exceptional, and my eyes were tearing up by the end. (Happy tears!) This would be great for any child (or adult) who loves dogs, has been concerned about a stray dog, or who is going through a lonely period. ... Read more

Follow Carl is a wonderful book for all fans of this special Rottweiler. He takes his charges through a fun filled day in the park. The colorful illustrations encourage the reader to embellish the story and truly havefun with this book.As the owner of two Rottweilers, all the Carl booksare in my son's library! Three cheers for Carl!

5-0 out of 5 stars Carl is the leader and the children love to follow!
Having all of the "Carl" books I thought perhaps Ms. Day would run out of "things" for Carl to do.Not so.Carl has plenty to do, so much that everyone ends up napping--some of the children are positioned like little puppies.Carl, of course, is his usual self.Veryentertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Ms. Day's excellent, enchanting Carl books.
As usual, Ms. Day has captured the essence of Carl and the childrens' escapades. Anyone who enjoys children and dogs (especially Rottweilers)will appreciate the accuracy of both the stories, the story line, the poses, andthe facial expressions of all the characters.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gently humorous
Downing a bowl of alphabet soup the family dog comes up wordy in Susan Meddaugh's gently funny picture book. Friendly illustrations will soon have sympathetic kids relating their own version as Martha wears out her wonder with incessant chatter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny for Dog Lovers
I bought this book as a gift for a 5 year old, but found the humor to be a bit more sophisticated. My 9 year old son (& dog lover) found it to be hilarious. It will become a favorite gift of mine to give children in the 7-9 age bracket.

4-0 out of 5 stars a talking dog!
Kids love the idea of a talking dog, and Martha's story is amusing, as she develops the ability to speak after eating alphabet soup and then drives her family mad with her nonstop talking (except during her own televisioin shows, of course). It's unfortunate that the family eventually collectively yell at Martha to "SHUT UP!" but we just talk about the inappropriateness of the family's response, even when they're frustrated.Eventually they resolve the situation when Martha proves to be brave, intelligent and lucky during an encounter with a burglar.A bit loopy but kids love it/ ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Just so you'd know, this book is not denouncing Togo.It is merely telling Balto's side of the story. And it is a courageous one taht deserves to be well-known.There.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for introducing the Iditarod to children
If you love the Iditarod and you want your children (or children you're fond of) to be introduced to this great race, the story of Balto and the Great Race by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel is a good place to start, beginning with the cover illustration by Nora Kerber. This book is a Stepping Stones chapter book with black and white illustrations throughout.
5-0 out of 5 stars Balto:not just for kids
We purchased this book after seeing the real Balto (courtesy of the art of taxidermy) at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Our quest in Northeast Ohio, where Balto enjoyed his senior years, was prompted by my seven year-old daughter's love-affair with the animated film about this dog, who navigated a lost sled team carrying life-saving medicine through Alaska in 1925. I hereby confess publicly that, after myself reading the book, which is aimed at the 9 year-old set, I cried, much as I had done 35 years before after reading "Lassie Come Home."This account, however, is much more compelling than "Lassie" or "Old Yeller," because it entirely factual (possibly excepting the subjective thoughts imputed to the protagonist). 3-0 out of 5 stars Mister Dog Puffs Along
One of the biggest differences between children's books of today and those from a half century before is the presence of pipes. In the 1940s, shorthand for "father" was "the fellow smoking a pipe." Today that distinction is woefully absent. Mister Dog, while not a father himself, does take a paternal role with a wayward boy, in some way justifying the fact that on nearly every page his smoldering corn cob juts jauntily from his furry lips. True, in one frame a bunny has taken over the duties of smoking, but this is just in good fun. The true strength of the book is its illustrations. Garth Williams, illustrator of so many stories, is splendid. His cats, those Mr. Dog frolics with while on a walk, made my daughter laugh aloud. The story itself, frankly, is pretty dippy. Dated and occasionally odd, the pictures invite parents to come up with a narrative of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Crispin's Crispian!
I knew this would be a good book, when I saw it was written by Margaret Wise Brown. It proved to be true.I immediately fell in love with Crispin's Crispian, and his little home and life. The illustrations are charming. The story tugs at your heart upon seeing a little boy all by himself, fishing.... But you have to read the rest to see what happens.Don't go into this story with too much of an analytical mindset. It is just a wonderful children's story, that will be read again and again.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book to grow up by
I first read this book to my son when he was about 5.He loved the illustrations and laughed like crazy at the pictures of the dogs with their tongues lolling out of their mouths. We continued to read this book for many years. Now my son is 22 and he really does belong to himself.I asked him recently if he had patterned his life on the ideas in Mister Dog.He didn't even have to think before he confirmed what I always knew. This book's emphasis on self reliance and love for another is just that powerful.A must!!! ... I bought this for my nephew's 4th birthday and he asks to have it read over and over. All of the adults who have read it laugh out loud. It's absolutely wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!
I think Beverly Cleary did a good job writing Henry and the Club House.Henry and the Club House is part of a series of books. This book is about a 11 year old boy who has a paper route. But, some times he forgets his paper route. One day he forgets his route and his mother has to do it.He has lots of problems but his biggest problem his Ramona.Ramona is a four year old girl.Every day Ramona is upto something.Henry has to get an idea to get rid of Ramona. In Henry and the Club House Henry has to deal with Ramona and a clubhouse that he is working on with his two friends Robert and Murph. I think every one from 7-11 should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I just finished reading Henry and the Clubhouse to my little boy, who will turn six next month. He loves the Henry books (we've read 5 or 6 now), but I think I love them even more. My mother read these to me when I was 6 or 7, about 28 years ago, and I hadn't picked them up since. Now, as I read them to my son, every scene comes back to me with all of the humor and warmth that pervade each of Beverly Cleary's books for children. The author has remarkable insight into how the minds of young people work. Reading these books is an absolute delight.

4-0 out of 5 stars Busy Henry
This story takes place in the present during our time in the 21stcentury, in a little town called Pitchfork, Oregon. Since it is in the 21st century, the setting is important because he would not have all the things he has right now. The reason for it is because back then some people did not have what they wanted. People were always fighting in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars We like it for all the wrong reasons.
My 6-year-old brought this book home from school, and it's a fine learning-to-read book for her. What struck her, though, was the (unintentionally?) hilarious nature of a few of the illustrations. They have to be seen to be appreciated.Call us juvenile, but we laughed until we cried.I'm buying one for home, and more for gifts! Thanks, Biscuit!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Children's book
My daughter loves the Biscuit series books!I think she's attracted to the cute golden dog named Biscuit. It also helps when her dad or me read the books with animation.

5-0 out of 5 stars adventure in the north
The trapper Link and his snow dog Chiri are my favorite characters in books by Jim Kjelgaard.Link and Chiri are both natural loners who are steadfast and competent in the far northern wilderness.Chiri's mother is a big pack dog that Link had just bought. Her first litter of puppies had been killed on the trail by a cruel master. With a new litter on the way, she cleverly runs away and bears her three puppies in a windfall in the territory of a fierce black wolf that hates man and dog alike, having been shot early in life.Chiri is the biggest and most promising of her pups, and the only one who escapes from the black wolf. His mother and siblings dead, the lonely pup learns survival by necessity, and being a superior animal, becomes a strong and able hunter. The trapper Link is also strong and competent, but like the orphaned dog, he is lonely. He has dreamed of having a special dog who can be his companion in the wilderness. How he tames the great dog and together they live in nature, experiencing beauty and danger, and hunger and plenty, should make dog lovers and nature lovers of any young person who reads the book. There is a sequel that is just as good, maybe better, entitled "Wild Trek".If you liked these two books of adventure in the north, you would also like "Lost in the Barrens" and "Curse of the Viking Grave" by Farley Mowat.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Beautiful..
This story has delicate explainations of many things for instance, the beautiful nature, the sign of each season, and the animals behaviors especially the humorous doing of the mask face puppy, Chiri. Moreover, The story has shown the relationship between dogs and men that is very impressive.

5-0 out of 5 stars exciting until the end
This boook was and is still my favorite book in my collection. This is a thrilling story about a trapper named link stevens who traps in the "Black Devil's" territory. The black devil is a black woulf who was shot by a Chirikov as a puppy and in time the black wolf has killed him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
I read this book for a book report in 5th grade. I enjoyed as much as I enjoyed Ginger Pye. It was very entertaining. I think this book is mainly for grades 3-7 because its big and has some big words too. Loved this book overall

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cat Has It!
Pinky Pye is yet another well written book by Elenor Estes. As appealing as both the Moffats series and the infamous Ginger Pye.This title is an excellent choice for both the traditional and creative book report formats for readers of 4th through 6th grades. If you love animals, and a solid story line of sibling relationship, this book is for you!Besides, where else could you read about a typewriting cat!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pinky Pye
Pinky Pye is a charming book about a little black cat. Pinky Pye is about the Pye family and they go to Fire Island. Mr. Pye goes to look for birds and brings the family. At there cottage they find a cat in a crabnet, there was a sign on her that said "ABANDID". It said her name was Pinky too. The Pyes decided to keep her. One day she started type writing. They started calling her the type writing cat. They found an owl in the eaves and gave it to Mr. Bish, his owner. You should read this book to find out the ending. I think this is a book for all ages. ... Read more
