I love this book ! As a dog lover of mixed breeds for 30 years and a purveyor of fresh children's books too, this book is perfect !The story is charming and the illustrations are whimsical ! Children will apply this story to "bi-peds" (people) too. It is obvious that Joy loves dogs and understands them. Thanks Joy ! ... Read more

Editorial Review

We hold this truth to be self-evident: farting makes kids laugh. Walter,an apologetic-looking dog adopted from the pound, passes gas morning, noon, and night, no matter what he eats, whether it's a 25-pound bag oflow-fart dog biscuits, cat food, or fried chicken. On the bright side,"If Uncle Irv let one slip, he just went and stood near Walter." WhenFather reaches the limit of his patience with Walter's flatulence, hedecides the pooch is once again pound-bound, despite Betty and Billy'spleading. Poor Walter knows his days are numbered and "He resolved tohold in his farts forever." That very night, two burglars break intoWalter's family's house, and (you can see where this is going) Waltergasses the burglars with a "hideous cloud" that forces them to droptheir loot and run into the clutches of the police officers, "chokingand gasping for air." The next morning Father and Mother discoverWalter has saved the day--or at least their silverware andVCR. "And so the family learned to live with Walter, the hero dog. Andthat is the end of our tail." (Or is it? Fans will be pleased todiscover the next book Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ripping off Dav Pilkey
This book was terrible, because it is a rip-off of "Dog Breath:The Horrible Tale of Hally Tosis" by Dav Pikley, which came out in 1994!The only difference is that Walter farts while Hally has bad breath. In both stories, the terrible smell prompts families to give the dogs away, and nothing they try gets rid of the terrible odors. In both books, the burgulars break in to the family homes, and are deterred by the animals' bad smell, and the dog saves the day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterically pleasing.
I bought this book to read to my family over holiday break and sat down with little kids, friends, grandparents and parents present. Not only did I have trouble reading it without snorting but my grandmother almost peed her pants laughing so hard. Acceptance is the only lesson you will get out of this book. This book was written for humor only. If you've ever owned a dog, you know most of this book is exaggeratingly true. Great for all ages. Strange, yet intriguing illustrations.

Editorial Review

Author Wilson Rawls spent his boyhood much like the character of this book, Billy Colman, roaming the Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his bluetick hound. A straightforward, shoot-from-the-hip storyteller with a searingly honest voice, Rawls is well-loved for this powerful 1961 classic and the award-winning novel Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ulises Cruz Review
I really liked the book and it is a very fun interesting book to read. I really liked that it had to do with some sort of sport. I also liked it because it was book were there was all source of action. There was a little boy that lived in the hills and dream of having two coon hounds. He finally worked and saved enough money to buy himself two. He was so excited to get them that he trained them to hunt. The characters were very believable and never doubted that they were making them up. The plot was very interesting because it was about the kid entering a big coon hunt. He won the competition by treeing four coons with his dogs. The major themes of the story were when on of the Prichard brothers accidentally stabbed himself. The author used a very special way of imagery. He made everything be visual in my head. I was all into the story that I didn't want to stop reading. I didn't like by were sometimes they didn't talk about when the dogs killed the coons and how they treed them. They would sometimes leave you think what would happen next or what could of happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Geez!
I adore this book. I wrote a reviw on what I think of it a while ago, so you could find it later. But I'm sick of all these people saing there was no action or adventure. What's up with that? And to the people who say there are lost of grammer mistakes in the book, you should check your grammer.

4-0 out of 5 stars a spectacular book
The book I read was "Where the Red Fern Grows".This story takes place in the state of oaklahoma.Thers a boy named Billy and he lives with his family. All Billy wanted was two hound dogs. One day Billy went to his grandfarthers store and his grandfarther told Billy he had to meet God half way.Billy worked til he had 25.00$.Billy got two hound dogs.He decided he name them Dan and Little Ann.Billy hunted all he could and he sold the skins for money. If you want to know the rest read this spectacular book your self. ... Opal just moved to Naomi,Florida with her dad the preacher. One day he sent her to the store (winn-dixie)to get food.Opal came back with a stray dog.She asked the preacher to keep him but he said no.Finally her dad gave in and let him stay there while they were looking for a homefor him.Opal named the dog Winn-dixie.they had lots of aventures together and made lots of nice friends.Such as Otis (gertrudes pet shop owner),Mrs Franny Block(libray owner),Gloria Dump,And sweetie Pie Thomas.Opal was reading Gone with the wind to Gloria and they decided to have a party just like Ms.Scarlet.They did it was fabulous. They invited all there new friends. All the stuff that happend that summer happend because of Winn-dixie.Ilike the book and the movie just about the same. But I would have to say I like the book a little bit more.If you haven't read the book yet you should its a very good book about a girl that finds a dog and they end up to love it each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as the first :-)
This is such a cute book.I like it as much as the first book from Gloria.Noelle goes on a treasure hunt looking for gold but finds much more in the way of treasures other than gold.It has a nice underlying message of friendship and kids of all ages (even older kids - like me) will love it.She's got the same kind of beautiful pictures in here and making it visually appealing is as important as the story itself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this a Scratch and Sniff Book?
What a crass topic - I didn't think it was possbile to write and publish such a stupid book. How many IQ points do you lose if read the book? Read the others in the series? Actually waste your money on something like this?

1-0 out of 5 stars One Star for Intriguing Art
I like the imaginative artwork. That said, why does everything under the sun have to be discussed/applauded? I agree with the previous review in that the world was a better place when there were concepts such as discretion, privacy, decorum, taste other than poor, etc. The world has LOST something. I'm no prude, and I enjoy an off color joke once in awhile, but this is too much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Uh Huh Uh Huh Uh Huh (He's a yes man!)
We picked this book up with a CD of the author reading the story through school last year.My son loves it still 6 months later & I find it pretty amusing myself. We have had side discussions about time out, not drawing on the walls, how watching tv is a privilege, using your imagination, and how sassing your parents ("You're not the boss of me!") will get a child in trouble for sure.My son even took it to preschool last year to share with his class.Since it is about cats, I think young girls would be entertained as well.As a parent, I recommend this book particularly if you can get it with the read-along DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skippyjon Jone in the Dog House
It is as great as the first book my family loved the story. Again it is a book to have at home for children of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Skippyjon Jones in the Doghouse
My 6 year old daughter loves Skippy and we were both excited when we saw this, the second Skippyjon Jones book! The first book was fabulous! All of our family (dad, three daughters ranging in ages from 6-16, and myself) adored Skippy. The rhymes are fun to do and the book has a lot of energy, just like the first.Of course this book is similar to the first--it is a children's book and we bought it specifically because we liked the format of the first book.We are already anticipating the third book and will happily buy it when it comes out.Skippy is an extremely imaginative, high-energy, creative boy kitty who, like all little kids at one time or another, does naughty things. That doesn't make this a bad book, if anything, it should be a way to have a conversation with your young child about appropriate behavior. In the end, this was a fun, fast-paced fictional children's book that all three of my children laughed at and listened to when I read it--and that's saying something considering the older two are 11 and 16!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Give a Dog a Home!
What a lovely way to teach children `tis better to give than receive.' With few words and no rhymes - except for the author/illustrator's name, of course, and delightful black/white/aqua pictures of Claude the Basset and his homeless friend Bummer, all ages can delight in the spirit of kindness and compassion at Christmastime. But am I the only one bummed because Bummer didn't get a home for Christmas?
4-0 out of 5 stars great
this was book really good. i liked that claude was really nice to bummer. he have him all of those gifts. what a nice dog. the author did a good job saying that it is better give than get. he used a good example also by useing dogs. overall this is one of the best children books there are. so if you want to read a good book read this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Silly book kids will like to read around Halloween.
Poor Oscar Myer wiener dog (a hotdog dog) gets teased all the time. The bully dogs are always laughing at him because of his size and shape. For Halloween, Oscar's mom buys him a costume that is a hotdog roll with mustard on it. Oscar is so embarrassed, but wears it to avoid hurting his mothers feelings. Oscar gets laughed at once again but the story twists to allow Oscar a chance to be a hero. Oscar wins the respect of the bullies and they all share their Halloween dog treats with him. Silly story with decent, basic illustrations.

I never cared for that Mutts comic strip in the newspapers.Too cute and not funny.Maybe it's because I'm an adult. And maybe I have no excuse for reading the comics at all at this point.I don't know. But McDonnell's characters and light touch work well in this context, in a kid's book.

Editorial Review

Officer Buckle is a roly-poly bloke, dedicated to teaching schoolchildren important safety tips, such as never put anything in your ear and never stand on a swivel chair. The problem is, Officer Buckle's school assemblies are dull, dull, dull, and the children of Napville just sleep, sleep, sleep. That is, until Gloria the police dog is invited along! Stealthily pantomiming each safety tip behind Officer Buckle's back, Gloria wins the children's hearts. Meanwhile Officer Buckle assumes the cheers and laughter are all for him. As the master comedian Jerry Lewis once explained, every slapstick artist needs a straight man! Children will be highly entertained by the laugh-out-loud, adorable illustrations in this 1996 Caldecott Medal winner, while learning the value of teamwork and a pawful of nifty safety tips. This is an excellent book for k-2 classes. Our school has joined our Police Department in (adopt a police dog). This means that we help raise money for the police department to help provide care and the tools that our police dog might need. This book helped our students understand the relationship between the policeman and his dog. The children understood that policeman are there to help us in many ways and giving safety tips is one of the ways they can help us.I like the fact that this book is also mentioned in The Mailbox magazine and you can go on-line to the Mailbox site and get worksheets for the students to do in relation to the story. It is worth buying.

We've had this book a few years now, and my son, now 6, never tires of it. It's one of his favorites, and I really like it too. As other reviewers have mentioned, the pictures are great, and there's so much detail in them that they're fun to look at again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wiggle
This is such a cute book about wiggling, which most toddlers can relate with. It asks silly questions and shows a happy pudgy dog wiggling in lots of different places and ways. The story has a rhyme throughout and is great to read aloud. Your little one will enjoy listening and seeing the cute digitally created illustrations in this fun story.

5-0 out of 5 stars High energy story that is simply fun to read aloud!
A superbly simple rhyming story about wiggling through your day.I wanted to wiggle with the pictures on each page.I thoroughly enjoyed how Scott Menchin, the artist, used a real rubber ducky in a fake drawn bathtub and a cartoon dog with a real pancake on his head. The mismatched pictures were basic, colorful and fun to look at.The story itself is still in the style of the author's other books, Click, Clack, Moo, but doesn't make you feel as if you have read a different version of it already.Fresh ideas and crisp clean pages will have this book screaming to be read every day. Also recommended to use for teachers of kindergarten or first grade to start off the day with a good wiggle.Wiggling and movement before sitting down all day in class can provide some much needed stress relief...even for kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars A true original!
This is such a fun book. Fans of Doreen Cronin work get a special treat with Scott Menchin's illustrations. I absolutely love the pictures in this book! Menchin combines real pictures with illustrations and creative shadowing (not sure if that is a real word!)My 2-year-old has to take it to bed with her, she loves it so much. I recommend it to anyone with toddlers. In fact, it's my new birthday gift. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Walter the Farting Dog
Walter the Farting Dog is a great fiction book. Its authors are William Katzwinkle and Glen Muarry. Its main characters are the man at the yard sale, Walter, Betty, Billy, and the dad.
4-0 out of 5 stars My son loved it
My son loves Walter. He is a typical boy and body noises and it just makes him laugh. He isn't a kid that likes to read, but with the Walter books he is willing sit down and read to me and actually enjoys it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't hold my interest like the first one did.
Walter is back but not with the same enthusiasm as the first book. I barely laughed at this book and was disappointed because I absolutely fell in love with William Kotzwinkle's original Farting Dog book. Same strange, yet intriguing illustrations but the story didn't hold my interest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Halloween Pick For Young Children
This book is a great read to prepare your child for the fun and excitement of Halloween. It displays different American holidays and rates Halloween as Emily Elizabeth's and Clifford's favorites. They show Clifford in different costumes and let's your child interact by asking which would "you" suggest. My 3 years old really enjoys this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cliffords Halloween
I thought this book was so adorable how on every holiday Clifford does something special like for Christmas he dresses like Santa and gives out gifts, on Easter he plays the Easter bunny, and on Halloween he always dresses up, in the book he dressed up as many different things such as the devil, a clown, a witch, and even a ghost! Hes the most adorable dog in the world!! At Emily's party he was a ghost and everyone loved him. How can't you love Clifford? I know I love him! This book is suitable from the ages 0-6. Everyone will love this book. This book teaches people to help other people and still have fun, like most Clifford books he always shows people how to love, share, and get along. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book!!
I have to rate this a 5.I ordered the dog, birds, and the cats.My son was infatuated by them since he was 3 months old.He especially loves the dog one. He's 11 mo. now and if he's fussing or crying, all i have to say is:This is a Dog... and he just starts smiling, laughing and gives me his full attention to finish the story.I just love the look on his face when i start reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
My one year old daughter loves this book, she has a fascination with dogs, it's very sturdy, highly recommended!

Editorial Review

When 11-year-old Marty Preston chances upon a mistreated beagle pup in his hometown of Friendly, West Virginia, he is not prepared for the ethical questions he has to face. Should he return the dog to its owner, only to have the animal abused again? Should he tell his parents? Should he steal food to help the poor creature? Marty's efforts to cope with these questions provides the moral backbone for this story, which is presented in a language and manner that will be understood by third- and fourth-grade readers. The heart and beauty of this 1992 Newbery Medal winner lies in lessons children will take away with them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Deserved Newbery Winner,But Some Reservations
Shiloh is the winner of the 1992 Newbery Medal, and it tells the story of Marty Preston, an 11-year-old boy, and his efforts to rescue a mistreated beagle, Shiloh. Though Marty believes Shiloh came to him for help, his father makes it clear that he must not interfere in their neighbor's business, even if that neighbor is Judd Travers, a thoroughly unlikable man who abuses his dogs. When Shiloh comes to him a second time though, Marty has to choose between his love for Shiloh or obedience to his father. Though I had to do some minor editing while reading aloud to my preschool-aged children, this is a very engaging story full of struggle, devotion, and suspense that had my son (and hubby) begging for more.Naylor expertly reeled us in from the first chapter as we got wrapped up in Marty's concern for Shiloh and she kept us expectantly turning the pages to find out what would happen next.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Eleven-year-old Marty lives with his parents and two younger sisters just above Friendly, West Virginia. Marty finds a dog and he is convinced that the dog is abused by its owner. He wants to keep Shiloh, but he has to strike a deal with Shiloh's owner, Judd Travers.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Beagle story review by Zachary in AK
Shiloh is one of the first books that I read and finished. Before reading it, I didn't really like to read. But after reading it, I wanted the rest of the series because I just had to know what happend next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I have a 2 year old bulldog, so when I saw Gloria Estefan on The View with her bulldog talking about her new book, I HAD to get it! I'm also a teacher, and was excited to find a book that teaches kids that it's ok to be different. The wonderful illustrations and rhyming text really makes the book fun to read. And Noelle sure does remind me of my dog! It's now at the top of my "favorite kids books" list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations
I REALLY liked the illustrations in this book.I also like the story. It reminds me of my "Stinky the Bulldog" book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Another GREAT bulldog book!!
This was good, but if you are bulldog lover, you should definitely try "Stinky the Bulldog" by Jackie Valent. It's got a wonderful message for children and adults alike and the illustrations are much better than Gloria's book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
My 17 month old just loves this book.He loves lifting the flaps and seeing what animal appears. My only comment is I wished the flaps were made of a stronger, more durable paper.Overall a great book.It was recently listed in Parents magazine as "Our favorite baby books of all time."

5-0 out of 5 stars Learned how to say No!
My son learned how to say no by reading this book. You are looking for Sally's puppy Spot in this book. There are flaps to open and different animals to discover behind each flap. The book takes you through different parts of the house asking "Is Spot in here".You open the flap and say "No".It's so cute!Definitely a good book for your child.
