5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get the Imagination Going with Pictures
Most children have heard the story of Noah's ark, but I think they're rarely encouraged to imagine what the inside of such an ark would be like. This book approaches the story from that angle and really gets a child's imagination going. What would it be like if I were on this ark? What would it look like to have so many different animals all together?
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book for church libraries
This is another lovely book by Jan Brett. The artwork is wonderful and the text is from the viewpoint of Noah's grandson.I bought this for our church library and am glad I did.I also suggest "Naamah: The Story of Noah's Wife" by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso for little girls. It stresses Naamah's job in preserving seeds and plants for use after the flood, and makes the Noah story less of a "men did the whole thing" story.Women were there too and obviously did a lot of work in saving the family and animals, too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pratchett amuzes to the last.
I bought this book a couple of years ago to read to my little brother and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. There were places i literally had to stop because i couldn't catch my breath for the laughter.
4-0 out of 5 stars Haven't really read it, but noticed a similarity to....
Ok, I have not read any of the Discworld series at this point in time, but the title struck me as a bit of an allusion or, oppositely, an originator for Mr. Bobo's Mouse Circus in Neil Gaimans "Coraline" (great book, for a kids book)...does it interest anyone to know that Gaiman and Pratchett intersected about 1990 or so to write a novel together, "Good Omens" (another kick-nuts book)?

2-0 out of 5 stars He does better...
Maurice is a very clever talking cat. He travels from town to town in Discworld with a band of taking rats and a boy (who probably talks the least). Together, they run a "Pied Piper" scam. Now they've just arrived in Bad Blinitz, but what they don't now is this town is different from the others they've swindled. They join up with the Mayor's daughter (probably the best character) to try and solve the strange going ons the town is experiencing. Got quite confusing in a couple of bits, which is one of the reasons I gave it a lower rating. Also, I felt like Pratchett's usual originality was sort of stifled in it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Triple Crown of White's Fictional Work
My 6-year-old daughter and I throughly enjoyed all three stories. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Trumpet of the swan
Louis is the main character and he is a swan.He can't talk to other swans. Sam Beaver, a boy takes Louis to school, where he learns to read and write. But this isn't work to other swans and actually Louis was in love with the beautiful swan, Serena, and she spurns hin because he was defective. And Louis's father, the old cob, does a difficult thing. He stoles a trumpet so his son would be able to win his love.Louis wins on his love and pay the trumpet money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuart Little is a good book
Stuart Little is a mouse and he is a great help around the house, but sometimes he gets into trouble, like when he got dumped in the garbage dump. I think it's cool how a human mommy and daddy had a baby who is a mouse instead of a kid. I like how Stuart liked Margalo the bird.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching Aid.
This book is a great tool to use to assist in having a different perspective. We tend to only see what we prceive as being there and looking at nature and how she hides our brothers and sisters is amazing. This type of books are needed in schools, in any teaching environment to assist children who are visual to let others know thier strengths and to assist those who depend on auditory and kinestetic to become more visual.

5-0 out of 5 stars With nature facts organized by animal type
This slim book is only 31 pages long; but don't let its appearance fool you: Reading The Wild packs in details on reading the signs of animal life and will require good reading skills from grades 4-6. Doolittle's beautiful full-page illustrations lend to nature facts organized by animal type and revealing the animal's habits and habitat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Tasha Tudor
Nothing pleases me more than to open the pages of "Corgiville Fair" and marvel at Ms Tudor's ability to create a magical, mythical world of corgis, goats, cats, bunnies and boggarts. The story is so dear, the illustrations are truly inspired, and the boggarts are personalities a reader will never forget. This is a treasure for any child's or adult's library; as a child I wanted nothing more than to be able to live 'west of New Hampshire and east of Vermont' in the wonderful, cozy world of Corgiville.

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad to see it's still in print
This was my all time favorite book when I was a child.I went on line, hoping to at least find a used copy for a friend's baby... and am thrilled to find that it is still in print! It's a great children's story, full of wonderful characters, with great illustrations.Very charming.I loved it as a child, and am glad to get to replace my old copy with a new one for my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasha Tudor and her beloved corgis
Not merely one of the finest children's book artists, but one of the finest naturalist artists period. This book well showcases her sense of whimsy as well as her eye for detail. Add to that her obvious love for her corgis, and you've got a book that is a can't miss! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Ten Things to Do Before You Die
I almost didn't get around to it until I became a grandma.Thought I'd better brush up on children's literature--how had I ever missed this? It's hard to believe that anyone could make a Water Rat, a Mole, a Toad, a Badger, and various and sundry rodents so endearing. Why, parts of it even made me LOL!The abridged hardcover edition I bought was only thirteen bucks or so, but the illustrations by Inga Moore make it priceless.Buy this one!You won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Abridged but wonderful even so!
For those people who are not familiar with this timeless classic, it is the charming tale of a humble Mole who wanders down to the riverside one day, only to meet a new friend in the local water Rat, and thus begin a series of adventures that will introduce him to the lovable but foolish Toad and the brave but aloof Badger, and a host of other woodland creatures -- all of whom dress and act like people. Most of the action surrounds Toad's exploits and escapes, while most of the heart comes from the friendship between Mole and his friend Rat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
This book may be of interest to an icthyolgist, but it's not much use to a fisherman. The color illustrations are very poor. They all have a washed out yellowish tint, and thus the illustrated fish tend to look all alike. The non color illustrations are better, but the book relies mostly on descriptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensible guide to fish
I perform wildlife surveys for corporations all over the east coast. Half the weight of my equipment is Peterson Field Guides, which give me quick and easy identification of flora and fauna found and often eliminates the need for dicotomous keys and microscope work. This particular guide has helped me puzzle out a lot of small fish I come across. Well written, excellant illustrations, an important part of my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars If at first you don't succeed, try try again!
The valuable take-away lesson of this book is "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again."My three year old loves this book.We have borrowed it again and again from the library this year. When the beetle finally succeeds at flipping over after many failures, he makes a clicking sound as he does it, which delights my son.We are big Eric Carle fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Clumsy Click Beetle
I'm a Branch Manager of a Public Library and we have found that this book is very good for the children that comes over for school visits. It is so funny to be reading them the book and they start hearing the Beetle make it's sound they start looking around the room trying to find out where it is coming from then they cant believe that it came from the book. Every year when school starts back this is the book that i read to my Kindergarden classes. I suggest that everyone should get this book and watch the look on your childs face when you read this book to them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Library Users say thumbs down
I'm a children's librarian.I bought this book for my library.I've read it to two groups and showed it to some of the children who come to the library everyday.I thought they would like it since Carle's other book The Very Quiet Cricket is so enormously popular.Their reaction has been thumbs down. The children like the chirping sound from the cricket book, but the click sound from this beetle book doesn't impress them. The dull "click, click" really pales in comparison to the lilting cricket chirp. We've had our copy of the beetle book for almost three months, and it's only been checked out once.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great black and white book
Picture books without text seems so rare these days, but this one, aimed at the earliest readers (or rather listeners) is great. There are just the animal faces on each page and the black and white only colors are great for young eyes which are still developing. The pages are board book pages, so great for curious hands (and mouths). The animals are really cute and the book is only 10 pages long so perfect propped up for tummy time and letting your child enjoy the pages as long as they can handle/want to.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Book Loved to Pieces
This book has gone through four of my babies so far, each one loving it.At only a few months each of my children would stare at each page. When they were old enough to hold the book themselves, it would be the book of choice.I even have a picture of my oldest asleep at age 4 mo. in her swing holding the book open. That oldest is now 7 and really loves to "read" it to her baby siblings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Animals Black and White
This book is wonderful...my baby girl was 1 month old when we got it and she just loved it, other books and pictures lost her interest very quickly . We were amazed at how long she would gaze at the pictures and that she actually had favorites! She is now 4 months old and it is still her favorite. The Puppy and kitty pages make her smile.I recommend this book for any baby. Joy Cowley has taken our favorite characters and put them into a full length story. The share an adventure to the city and realize that 'there is no place like home!'Mrs Wishy-Washy comes to the rescue just in the nick of time.A total winner!

3-0 out of 5 stars some questionable words used
Be aware that this book uses the word 'hate' a few times and also refers to Mrs. Wishy Washy as 'mean' old lady...its a good fun story, and I still read it to my daughter, but I edit the choices of words along the way...she has the rest of her life to find out what hate is...a two year old doesn't need to know now.

Editorial Review

The most fascinating part of an animal, in the minds of many young children, is the tail. Not only do kids lack such appendages, they've been told that, as tempting as they are to yank on, tails are not to be touched. Fortunately, this charming, texture-rich board book (with patches of real fake fur!) is the next best thing. A vast menagerie of cartoonish critters play and scamper around the pages of Matthew Van Fleet's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Archly Amazing Animal Alphabet Advances Art Appreciation!
I found this book in a thrift store and was instantly mesmerized. The art is of the absolute highest caliber. Base is beyond gifted. These paintings are an ideal merger of realism and fantasy with lush, highly saturated color and deep, contrasty depth. I imagine this book could inspire any kid with a creative bent a great deal more than several trips to an art museum. I've bought copies to give to fellow artist/philosopher friends whether or not they've got kids. (We don't as yet, but we're working on it, and have beloved nieces and a nephew).
1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a children's book
Loving artistic kids' books, I thought the reviews sounded awesome. And they are so universal! I just received this book and was shocked by the violence, morbidity, darkness and eeriness of the themes. Granted, this is the work of a talented artist, but not material for a light-loving soul, much less a toddler. I can't return it fast enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have a confession...

5-0 out of 5 stars Days of the week..signing fun
First grade starts in just a week...for this teacher. Today I pulled out one of my first of the year songs, "Today Is Monday" which I have on tape along with Carle's terrific illustrated book. I teach it with the signs for the weekdays, food and later add in connecting words as the year progresses and the sign vocabulary increases. I can sign well enough to set the first grade songs and curriculum into place alongside the language I'm developing in beginning reading. So we sign both days of the week (which are like the letter signs I'm teaching turned in a circle) and the foods we sing about, green beans, spaghetti, chicken, roast beef, ice cream ,zoup, fried fish. By the end of the week we have reviewed days of the week, put the signs in place, got some hilarious food signs going and can perform something for parents for Back to School visits. I have the big book version of this book so we read together the text working on the days vocab which then becomes spelling in a few weeks. And thus the start of another fun year.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Eric Carle's best work
I love Eric Carle's books, but this one does not measure up to his other works. It introduces an animal eating a food on each day of the week starting with Monday (not Sunday), but there is no plot and is just plain boring. Wish I hadn't spent my money on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars What's Not to Like?
I like this book and my son loves it. It's a little hard to read (makes you out of breath), but we always sing it when we read it. This would make a great addition to any toddler's collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best.
First off i want to say I am a hard critic of the Redwall series because I believe they are becoming very repetitive. This book however is a breath of fresh air, differnt from all the rest. This is easily his best in my book, along with Martin the Warrior and The Bellmaker.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Long Patrol
A young hare named Tammo longs to be in the Long Patrol, a fierce fighting force that protects all of Salmandastron. However, he joins a small army of various animals that, led by Lady Cregga Rose Eyes, battles the legendary Rapscallion, in the name of defending Redwall Abbey. The ending is known, but a few twists and turns make this book worth every page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Out of this world!
This is art and one rarely comes across art that is this beautiful and this close to being relevant. It's hard to deny the randomness in the order with which thoughts, figures, questions and answers appear in this book but that's what makes it so much more enjoyable. The story seems to be powered by a secret source of energy that exists at the boundary between "real" and "imaginary." The authors frequently cross this boundary on either direction without missing a beat, reminding us how great it is to think freely. What's really great is that this story has no beginning and no end so you can really go back and read it over and over again. Just make sure you don't read it 12 times...
5-0 out of 5 stars Totally unexpected!
I bought this book yesterday and haven't stopped laughing. I work at a zoo and we just got Giraffes so I thought it might be educational. Boy was I right! It's the funniest book I've read in a long time. I highly reccommend it if you are wanting a good laugh or need to know how to make sandwiches for them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hippoes and Hummus Haters
Haggis-on-Whey's highly educational book on the mating season of hippoes totally rocks.I was so surprised by so many unknown facts. For instance, hippoes wear lipstick when it rains. And did you know that hippoes don't appreciate the efort of penguins in their making of the Cross Continential Railroad?Pig-heels are their favorite food. I was most startled by the picture of a hippo eating cinnimon apple sauce.I highly reccommend this book for squirel monkeys and Ted Nugent and scientists named BENNY. Rock on Madagascar!
