Editorial Review

Sandra Boynton knows her farm animals. This simple board book, "a touch, skritch, & tickle book," will delight babies and toddlers (and probably moms and dads too) with its multi-sensory presentation of whimsical barnyard creatures. Each bright, colorful illustration features a tactile component and some fun words to accompany it. The cow's nose is made of a soft pink material and the text on the opposite page declares, quite correctly, "Fuzzy fuzzy fuzzy." A dog with a rough paw, a pig with a smooth nose, a turkey with a "little bit bumpy" wattle, and a soft-bellied duck round out the ensemble. The final page features two chicks inside lift-the-flap eggs who disagree about whether to start over at the beginning of the book. "Touch and feel" children's books are no new innovation but too often the different textures end up feeling more or less the same. But Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet
My 1 year old loves this book. My only wish is that was longer. There are very few pages, but they are classic Boynton.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!
My 14 month old daughter just couldn't get past chewing books and tossing them around the room. This is the first book that has really caught her attention. She absolutely LOVES it. We read it again and again and she loves the different textures on each page. We have now bought almost all of Sandra Boynton's books but this one remains a favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite touch-and-feel
I have a number of touch-and-feel type books for my boys, but this one is their favorite- even more than "Pat the Bunny"! It is brief enough for my little ones, with large patches for touching, and bright, simple pictures. We have not opened the flap eggs on the last page because my guys tend to tear up flaps, and the book still works fine for them! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to any Spanish Curriculum
I was wary of this book, because the more common Spanish term for "brown" in Texas (where we live) is cafe' or el color cafe.'But my students and children didn't miss a beat. As I read it - and it is VERY lyrical and sweetly repetitious, just as the English version is - the children simply adopted "pardo" as another way to say brown. What a wonderful way to introduce the fact that much of learning a second language is not always 1 to 1 - meaning, there are OFTEN many words that can mean similar ideas in the target language.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Treat for Spanish Speaking Pre-Schoolers
Bill Martin's "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" is an early childhood classic, and this Spanish translation maintains all of the qualities that make it a hit with younsters. The captivating illustrations soothe eventhe most rambunctious of tots. The lyric repetition of language make it anatural for developing Spanish literacy or communication skills. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's not easy for duck parents to find a safe place to bring up their ducklings, but during a rest stop in Boston's Public Garden, Mr. and Mrs.Mallard think they just might have found the perfect spot--no foxes or turtles in sight, plenty of peanuts from pleasant passers-by, and the benevolent instincts of a kindly police officer to boot. Young readers will love the mother duck's proud, loving protection of her wee webbed ones, and those with fond memories of Boston will enjoy familiar locales, from Beacon Hill to Louisburg Square, and over the Charles River--often from a duck's-eye view. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great classic
This edition is a reprint of a classic book telling the tale of a mother duck trying to move her ducklings across the city to a new home. I use to get the biggest bang out of this book, and still do, imagining all the people taking time out to stop for the little duck family. It is a piece of history to hold on to, reminding everyone to stop once in a while and enjoy the small things going on around us, and to respect nature and its animals.Although I don't know if the book was intended to make that big impact, reflecting on it now, especially as many towns expand, certainly brings this up. This is a must have book for the family collection to read before bedtime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quack Quack- A timeless story
This book was one of the few books that was always at the top of the stack at my grandmothers house when I was a child. It tells the story of a mother duck getting all of her ducklings across boston through many dangerous/exciting situations, and the accomidations many kind people made for them. This is a book that should hopefully become one of my children's favorites, and hopefully yours too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
This book is the one that hooked me on its author/illustrator. In my experience the age 2-3 crowd enjoys it so please do not wait until 4. I must confess to a having a passion for older "retro" books. This one is great because the story conveys a message of family togetherness, a sense of community and safety. The illustration is excellent and represents the Boston area well. While I do not live there I plan on a family vacation there and the book will come along.

Editorial Review

Oh, the wonderful things Mr. Brown can do! In this "Book of Wonderful Noises," Mr. Brown struts his stuff, as he imitates everything from popping corks to horse feet ("pop pop pop pop" and "klopp klopp klopp," respectively) while inviting everyone to join him in the fun. Young readers who are still learning their sounds and letters will get a wacky workout as they follow along with the very serious-looking, squinty-eyed Mr. Brown. Whether it's eggs frying in a pan or a hippo chewing gum, the skillful Mr. Brown just keeps topping himself, with a "sizzle sizzle" or a "grum grum grum." "Mr. Brown is so smart he can even do this: he can even make a noise like a goldfish kiss!... pip!" As usual, the words and pictures of Dr. Seuss make reading (and making all sorts of funny noises) impossible to resist. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite in our house!
My son got this book from grandma when he was a little over a year old.It was an automatic favorite! It starts with "Oh the wonderful sounds Mr. Brown can do.He can sound like a cow.He can go moo moo."It has pictures that are engaging for their simplicity and a rhyme that is flowing but varied so it doen't get boring. My son loved learning the noises and now he says them along with me when I read.I've even caught him looking at this book and saying the noises to himself. He's now 2 and we still read this one often (and I have it memorized).I highly recommend this book.I just don't know how you couldn't like it!

This was for my daughter who is 11 months old. I liked it because it is a board book and she cant rip the pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun book!
My son loves this book -- and so do we!My husband and I have really enjoyed reading this book, which is great because we read it everyday. The boardbook design is perfect for young children because the pages can't be easily ripped up or torn, and if a little drool gets on a page or two, it can be wiped off with a damp rag.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BUY
This text is an invaluable picture book for children learning how to read, how to enjoy reading and to learn about the joys and absurdities that life can bring. It is a humerous text that utilises excellent illustrations to represent the plot. The plot itself humerously intertwines fantasy with reality, ofcoarse it depends upon the child's imagination. A must for any child that enjoys playing with words and surreal ideas. The book's design is additionally unique in that is in an organisational folder style whereby children may select various imaginary creatures as they choose. I hope that others can share this wonderful picture book with all children they read to and/or with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elicits Wonderful Langugage
This is a great book that reinforces a strong message to children. I read this book every year in my classroom during the first week of school. I do not focus on the colors in the book - I feel that the story's value lies in the message that everyone is unique and special. The kind of responses that children offer in response to this high-quality piece of literature is amazing....a great read, in the classroom and at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mixed-Up Chameleon,School Project
I think that "The Mixed-Up Chameleon" by Eric Carle is a really great, fun and interesting, and a great learning experience for children.Personally, I have loved this book since as long as I can remember. In the beginning, it describes a chameleon that is bored of its boring life.He then goes to the zoo and sees all kinds of different and beautiful animals.Astonished by the sight of all of them, he wishes to become them one by one.He must wish to be about ten animals including a person. After all of this excitement, he sees a fly and......Well, I can't tell you what happens!Buy this book and your child(children) and you can find out together.Read more

Editorial Review

Gerald the giraffe doesn't really have delusions of grandeur. He justwants to dance. But his knees are crooked and his legs are thin, and all theother animals mock him when he approaches the dance floor at the annual JungleDance. "Hey, look at clumsy Gerald," they sneer. "Oh, Gerald, you're so weird."Poor Gerald slinks away as the chimps cha-cha, rhinos rock 'n' roll, andwarthogs waltz. But an encouraging word from an unlikely source shows this glumgiraffe that those who are different "just need a different song," and soon heis prancing and sashaying and boogying to moon music (with a cricketaccompanist). My 3 year daughter received this book as a birthday gift. Almost a year later, it is still her favorite (and mine as well!). The story is cute, funny and endearing. There is also some good lessons taught. Overall, a real feel good story. And the illustrations are just beautiful.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book but it's for young I spy beginners
This is a really cute book and would be perfect for a I spy beginner and a younger reader. My child is 3 1/2 years old and she loves I spy books and this is not for her. I gave it five stars because if I had purchased this last year when we were at a different level it would be fine. I will keep it and bring it out when my son is a bit older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for bedtime
This is a wonderful book that my nine-month-old has enjoyed since we received it as a gift when he was 2 months old.I don't understand the other reviews that say "it isn't much of a story"."Sweet Dreams", as the title implies, is a bedtime book. And it is perfect for that.Short, simple, engaging but not exciting, it is oh-so-soft and very comforting. My son loves it.He touches each animal ("kitty", "bunny", & "puppy") as we read, and I even stroke his face with the book once at the end as a final soother. It is the second of the two books we read at bedtime, the first being Baby Animals, which is a more active "Tough & Feel" book, but a good transition from active to night-night.I highly recommend Sweet Dreams for anyone looking for a comforting quiet book for bedtime reading with their baby.At nine-months, he seems far from outgrowing it; we will enjoy this book for some time to come.
5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect gift for your newest adopted family member
I think this is a perfect gift for any baby shower or new addition to your family. Especially for those who are adopting a child International like we did. We wheren't sure how much stimulation our daughter received in her Social Welfare Institute in China and so we brought this colorful book along. The book is a soft flannel and each tag is has a different color and texture and what child doesn't like tags of any sort. If you find this book in the book store or sometimes in a gift shop you can choose the colored tags and textures, for each one is different.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for babies (under 1)
I received a taggie blanket at my baby shower and my daughter loves it, so when I saw this book I bought it.She loves it, it as well.I find this works well in the stroller or backback and she likes to chew on all the tabs (tho' mostly the information tag, as it is the biggest). It cleans easily in the wash.It isn't really much of a "story" -- this is mostly a book-shaped toy.But she gives it lots of attention and it is a wonderful distraction for in the car or playpen. My son, who is two years old, thinks the loops are funny and likes to stick his fingers in them, but this is really an item for a baby.I don't imagine a toddler interested in real books would get much out of it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very repetitive
My daughter LOVES this book.We don't have the other what do you see books, so I can't compare it to them.It is a very good book, the only thing I've noticed is that it is repetitive in the answers each animal gives saying "that's what I see" at the end of them all. It's probably good for toddlers to have that repetition, but it's wearing me down.Otherwise I think this is a great book with great pictures and a good introduction to "unusual" animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shiver Me Letters: A Pirate ABC
Loved this book! As a kindergarten teacher, I am always looking for books with an alphabet theme. This book held my children's interest and mine. Some letters easy to spot, others required more thought.Great book for a pirate theme, or a letter p theme.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Alphabet Book
This is a cute alphabet book for the preschool set.The letters are cleverly disguised although by no means hidden. My three year old enjoys reading this as pirates have become popular recently with him and his friends."R said the Captain!" (instead of "argh")

5-0 out of 5 stars Our favorite alphabet book yet!
Our two sons (5 and 2) absolutely love pirates, so we were immediately drawn to this book when we saw it.The whimsical pictures and interesting writing sold us on the book.It isn't written in your typical sing-songy alphabet book rhyme, although the rhyme and rhythm are still there. As parents, my husband and I love the way the kids have to "search" in the pictures to find the letters - for instance, the "S" is in the curve of the blade of a pirate sword and the "O" is a life preserver. Our 2 year old giggles every time we reach the ending (but I won't give that away!)You just can't go wrong with this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book thinking to teach my son about manners, saying please and thank you.He does say please and thank you, but the book taught even more about going to school, playing safe, etc.He loves the characters Huckle and Lowly very much.He loves the book and since he was so familiar with the characters I bought him the Richard Scarry's Best Learning Video Ever (DVD). He watches it over and over and sings along.Huckle and Lowly are great.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars my son begged me to buy this classic manners book
my 5-year-old loves this book and parents will appreciate it too. i have tried to teach my child good manners and proper attitudes for years, but this book really clicked with him more than any of my talking. in fact, he refers to it daily! a very cute book, and not overtly preachy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to remember

Editorial Review

Imagine all the happiness and wealth you could achieve if you found a magic pebble that granted your every wish! Sylvester Duncan, an unassuming donkey who collects pebbles "of unusual shape and color," experiences just such a lucky find. But before he can make all his wishes come true, the young donkey unexpectedly encounters a mean-looking lion. Startled, Sylvester wishes he were a rock, but in mineral form he can no longer hold the pebble, and thus cannot wish himself back to his equine trappings. His parents, thinking he has disappeared, are at first frantic, then miserable, and then plunge into donkey ennui. Meanwhile, Sylvester is gravely depressed, but tries to get used to being a rock.Read more

This is a story that is as fresh today as it was when it was orginally written. It encourages make believe, yet allows for a feeling of security through the need for others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Felix and The Flying Suitcase - Great Book
My 6 yr old daughter recieved this book as a Christmas present. This has to be one of the most wonderful children's books I have read. The book is about a little girl who's rabbit(Felix)travels all over the world and then returns home on her birthday. My daughter and I have had great fun reading about the many places Felix has visited. She has also written her own letters back to Felix and is now keeping track of when the letters should arrive(by the date on the envelope). It has taught her many new things. She mostly enjoys opening the letters that Felix sent home.I would reccomend this book to anyone. We can't wait to find the other Felix books. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Let Down...
Duck for President is a let down after the fun of Click Clack Moo and Giggle Giggle Quack. It just doesn't have the fun factor for younger children that the earlier books did. We'll keep it around for when our child gets older and more perceptive about how things really work in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book
I love this book. Not only is it a cute story, but teaches that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riddles Review
