4-0 out of 5 stars Get what you expect.
Sturdy board pages. 5 animals, each with the texture of its "kiss". A toddler-delighting squeak sound when you press the pages. Don't expect too much, and you won't be disappointed. Overall, my 1.5 years all enjoys leafing through it, saying the animal's names and the sounds they make, and pressing it to hear it squeak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
My twin boys love this book. We got it as a gift for their first birthday and now at 18 months it's still their favorite. The best thing about this book is it helped teach them how to give a kiss to Mommy and Daddy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for your little ones
This book was a fave of my son from the time he was about 9 months all the way until now when he is three,we have read it so much I have to buy another copy for his little brother. He loves to feel the different pages.A great tactile book that will grow with your little one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
I got this book for me, not the kids. It's adorably funny. And the illustrations are wonderful. It will go in my own collection of best-loved children's books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Who Can Resist a charming wombat?
The illustrations for this book are eye catching right away, the wombat is super cute and cuddly looking as he rolls across the pages. As the title would indicate this is told from the Wombat's point of view, each turn of the page is a new day in his diary. As he learns how to train the humans who have decided to become his new neighbors. This is probably a great book to read aloud to younger children as one could really get into the wombat's character. Its very humorous and with a few words the story is great.Plus it introduces a new sort of animal to children's books, afterall whats a boring old bunny or bear to a wombat?

5-0 out of 5 stars "I'm a wombat.I live in Australia. As you can see from my picture, I look like a little bear, only smaller..."
This is the funniest book of the decade.I laughed out loud so hard during the 10 minutes it took to read it that my husband was curious enough to listen to me read it the next night.Author Jackie French must hold a record for the most laughs in the fewest amount of words. Her wombat is charmingly innocent, a creature who trains humans to feed him on demand. This short book has gorgeous illustrations and humorously understated narration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gregor's Underland quest begins!
This unlikely hero takes a turn for the worst when he stumbles into the Underland through a grate in his laundry room, along with his baby sister. In this land of unseen beauty, miles below his New York City apartment, lurk giant creatures both good and evil.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rabbit holes and sewage vents!
Done with Harry Potter and looking for something else to read till the next one comes out? Just need a good read? Looking for compelling characters, action-packed scenes, and pages that practically turn themselves? Well, pure and simple. Go read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
After reading this book, I could not put it down. The story is just so realistic, as you'll find yourself right there with the Gregor, Luxa, and Boots.I began reaading young, so this book is fairly easy for me. I do not give may items five stars, but this book deserved ten! I would highly suggest this book to anyone. I would like to say that I would not say 9-12 is the right age suggestion. I would say more 11-14, as it deals with some strong subjects such as death, war, and voilence. Although the laguage is fine, it may give younger children nightmares. Not the best bed time book. Just to let you know, this book is not another Charlie Bone. This is a much more mature book. It's not a Harry Potter either, a bit more realistic. This book is also great for class read aloud, but for 5th grade and up. I read this book at age nine, and found it a bit scary. I tried re-reading it in 5th grad and loved it. I'm going to Luxa for halloween. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's a reason you don't see hens in pants
This deceptively simple read-aloud will appeal to all from ages 3 to 93. Each two-page spread features one animal wearing some very inappropriate piece of clothing, accompanied by a quick explanation of why it's wrong for this animal to wear this particular article. For example, a kangaroo would find a coat with pockets "quite unneccessary" and a moose might find suspenders hard to "manage." The illustrations are a particular delight; the animals have very droll expressions and the problems are depicted with some subtlety which will encourage dialogue during a read aloud. This 1970 title truly has stood the test of time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very fun book
I used to read this as a child all the time. It was the most enjoyable book and very funny to look at the pictures and it is easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book!
We got this book as a Weekly Reader edition in our QVC pack and it's just great.I have to read this one almost nightly - it's just so funny to see all these animals dressed in clothes. My favorite personally is the last one with the elephant wearing a dress: "because it might be embarrassing."The elephant has the same dress on as the lady in front of her.Pretty cute stuff. And hey, you need to buy it just to see the hen try to lay an egg in a pair of pants! Great book, we laugh ourselves silly over this one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the Other George Stories
My son LOVES trains, and he also loved the Curious George movie. He has several of the books based on the Rey's style, and the PS2 Curious George game.
3-0 out of 5 stars Another take on George
Refusing to believe that love equals control or perhaps distracted by his companion Mrs. Needleman, the man with the yellow hat once again disappears as George wanders unsupervised. This time, in a train station mired in mid-century stasis, George rearranges the trainmaster's board in a misguided attempt to help. In the end, George discovers that what it takes to be forgiven is good intentions and the quick wits to save someone's life. Unlike Vipah Interactive's spanking clean take on George, Martha Weston's looser, darker illustrations harken back to the original's feeling of big city grit. ... Read more

With the support of an unusual boy named Sam, who helps Louislearn how to read and write, the swan has some rather unswanlike adventures andultimately wins the love--and the freedom--of a beautiful swan named Serena.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Trumpet of the Swan Review
I would like to recommend the book, The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White. The genre is fantasy. The setting takes place in the USA and Canada. One day there was a boy named Sam going for a walk, when he saw a family of swans heading to Montana. When they got to Montana one of the cygnets named Louis was defective and couldn't speak, so his father flew to Billings and stole a trumpet to help him speak. When Louis found out that his father stole the trumpet he decided to find a job so that he could pay back the money for all the damage and the trumpet. In the end Louis had a positive influence on all the people and swans he came in contact with.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Choice for Those with an Imagination
While reading this book, we follow a young Trumpeter Swan (or "cygnet" as the author clearly points out, as well as a male swan is a cob) named Louis, who is mute and cannot communicate. To enjoy this book, you have to pretend that a swan could go to school and learn to read and write, and to learn to play the trumpet. It has a happy ending which will please the dreamers. The only thing besides the repitition of facts in this book that bugged me was the cob's speeches- I often had to skip over the parts when he talked because it was so long and annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Trumpet Of The Swan Review!
I have read many books in my life, and this book has been one of my favorites. The Trumpet Of The Swan has everything a good book needs: a amazing plot, a good story, and has many humorous parts. Two reasons why I liked this book is because it was silly and there was never a boring part in this novel.

For this enchanting novel Brian Jacques has brought to bear theexperience of his eventful and adventuresome life, a life which hastaken him all over the world and seen him variously described as folksinger, playwright, and broadcaster. No doubt his usual writingenvironment--garden in summer, conservatory in winter--provides himwith the ideal theater for observing the wildlife on which the book'sunusual central characters are based. 5-0 out of 5 stars Treacherous Foxes
In His novel of Redwall, Marlfox,Marlfoxes, the treacherous brood of Queen Silth, are lurking in Mossflower Woods. I like this novel because Brain Jacques combines adventure and humor. In this book the marlfoxes steal the great tapestry of Redwall Abbey. Songbreeze, Danflor, Barble and Dippler, young woodland creatures, set out to retrieve it. Along the way they face many dangers while back at the abbey there is trouble. Janglur, Songbreeze's father, slays the Marlfox Ziral. The Marlfox code states blood for blood, which means Janglur must be slain. As the creatures of Redwall fight for freedom at home and abroad friends are slain. By the time the tapestry arrives in Castle Marl, the slaves in Castle Marl are just waiting for freedom.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way Over the Heads of Babies and Toddlers
This book is really cute and silly...for adults or older children.I found this book to be one of the most confusing and complex series of illustrations for opposites--to date.I've got a very sharp little 16 mo. old and he was completely lost, which is not typical for him.Opposites by Sandra Boynton is more suited for the developmental level of preschoolers in the 3-5 yrs. old range and up.However,by this age,a lot of them already understand the concept of opposites so this book may be totally unnecessary for them, too. This is the last Boynton book we'll buy.For books that more clearly demonstrate opposites, see these 2 books by Chuck Murphy: "Opposites" (in the Razzle Dazzle series)and especially "Opposites" (in the Slide 'n Seek series).
5-0 out of 5 stars a cute book
The book consists of 7 pairs of antonyms with animal cartoon illustrations.I can't wait to show this book to my Korean English students.
5-0 out of 5 stars HIGH AND LOW, FAST AND SLOW
"High and Low, Fast and Slow" This book from the talented Sandra Boynton shows little ones the concept and examples of opposites, all told with Sandra's usual catchy rhymes and silly cartoon animal style.Fast and slow is demonstrated with a dog and snail while heavy and light is demonstrated with an elephant and bunny on a teeter-totter.Hot and cold, young and old...Sandra provides another book that is as fun to read for a parent as it is for your little one to listen to.The always bright, colorful and hilarious cartoon illustration make Sandra's books a surefire hit in our home. This is another great, sturdy boardbook that will stand up to years of a childs "touch".yet another winner for Sandra! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good read for me and my just-turned-3-year-old
This book has a cute, fun story with good illustrations like the other Scarry titles I've seen.I don't know how much my daughter is learning from it, except that Mr. Frumble is one unlucky guy.I haven't gotten tired of reading it, as happens sometimes, and that's as important as anything in the long run.It takes me 5-10 minutes to read, and I don't get into some of the outside-the-story details which I think would only distract my daughter from the story at this age.

Patrick McDonnell has done it again!Just Like Heaven reaches into your soul and tugs at your heartstrings with a message as soft as kitten toes and puppy kisses. Most people these days are in a fog by being too plugged in to marvel at the beauty and goodness that surrounds them. This sweet, simple masterpiece will help teach our children and feed our inner children.Giving the gift of Mutts has become a family tradition that I will continue for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids

I read it yesterday for the first time and it lifted my spirits after a long day at work. I'm giving it to my friends and family for Christmas. It can be read on many different levels. Children will love it - but adults will love it even more. Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars busy, busy town
a great children's book that my children loved and now my grandchildren love it. Richard Scarry knows how to teach children about their world with a combination of words and illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classic!
This is a fabulous classic childrens book.Still the same captivating drawings as when I was a kid.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sure, it's sexist...
While I agree with the Danish reader that sexism is prevalent in this book, the reader should be aware that Richard Scarry died 10 years ago (1994). Later "Scarry" books, as written by Richard Scarry's son, Hank, do reflect current times and attitudes. However, I think Hank Scarry would be hard-pressed to tamper with his father's book, which many people consider a classic.I suggest using this book (as well as Cinderella, Snow White, etc.) as an opportunity to discuss sexism with your children. It's more productive than complaining about the dead on Amazon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get Jack Hamm books
If you like to draw, you can't go wrong with Jack Hamm books. They are economically priced, and each of them is a wealth of reference and how-to-draw information.I have all four of his books I know of.In addition to this one:Drawing Scenery: landscapes and seacapes; Drawing the Head & Figure; Cartooning The Head & Figure.Be advised that the style of the drawing in these books is dated, that is a bit old-fashioned, when fashion comes in to play. But the material is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice for the Beginning Animal Artist
This is a great book for learning how to draw animals, as advertised by the no-nonsense title.A junior high school art student would probably find this book challenging, and advanced art students can still glean nuggets from this richly illustrated book. For the price, this is a tremendous value compared to glossy, full-color texts that don't cover as many different kinds of animals. This book has been around for a while, but its effectiveness has not diminished, unlike some others of the author's titles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slim, clear & detailed- GREAT for beginners.
Great for beginners, intermediate & up. *Maybe* not best for kids beneath 4th grade. This is an *amazing* work in detail & scope. If you thought Drawing the Head and Figure was packed with information, wait till you see this slim, detailed book(!).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original Richard Scarry you loved as a kid
This edition preserves the original Richard Scarry artwork and text from the 1970's that I grew up with (and loved) as a kid. Some of the new (1990 and on) editions of Scarry stories have art that is slightly "off" from Scarry's style, and text that does not convey Scarry's wit and fun storytelling style.Rest assured that this edition has both of those!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good short stories, but has nothing to do with bedtime.
This book is a nice collection of short stories, but none of the stories have a thing to do with falling asleep. Buy this book because you want more of Richard Scarry's wonderful stories, not because you want to soothe your child to sleep. I myself feel let down because I thought I was buying stories to put my child to sleep to. ... Read more
