5-0 out of 5 stars Baby & Parents Smile Every Time We Read TUMBLE BUMBLE!
TUMBLE BUMBLE is an awesomely fun book. We have a board book printing, which seems to be currently unavailable new. My 14 month old has been asking us to read it over and over for 2 months now, and none of us is tired of it. The singsong rhyme feels natural and unforced. The pictures and story are charming without being sticky sweet. This is a great early story book -- enough story to keep parents happy but never too much text on one page. My baby is getting interested in the growing parade of animals and calls out the name of his favorite ("beeeeeeee!") when we meet it, and then finds the bee again on each page. There's a chance to name things (9 animals + a boy) and to count things.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sing Song Book
My family is a huge fan of this book & we have bought it several times for others.Once you've read it a couple of times, it is easy to memorize as it has a sing-song quality about it.By the time our daughter was 2, she was able to recite parts of each page.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very fun book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I wondered about explaining the subtle differences too but these cards are great. Just review them with your child and the differences can be made clearer as they grow older. In the meantime the kids really enjoy them and are armed with knowledge when you take outdoor trips. I am really happy with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photographs
The nature cards are photographs of actual scenes. They are very colorful and depicts nature well. They are not like other flash cards that show only 1 aspect of something (sand for beach etc). There are a lot of visual information on each card. Depending on the age of the child, you can use the cards to explain a great deal about the world around them. My 8 month old likes looking at the colorful photographs, while my 3 year old and I have discussions about what is portrayed. She loves to arrange them according to some logic of the moment. She also uses them to tell stories. Great for the imagination.

4-0 out of 5 stars Long-time favorite
My twin 17 month olds just love these cards and have for several months now.My twins chew and bend these cards continuously, but the cards have held up very well.My 17 m/os can pick out the sun (for example) when I group a few of them together (how we play with them at this age). They love carrying them around, pointing at the pictures, and hearing me tell them what they are.My 5 y/o also likes these cards and I use them to teach her reading (I cover up the pictures and show her the words). Good investment! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book we have to read over and over
My son is 10 months and we started reading him Peek-a-boo kisses (and other books) around 2 months. This was the first book he went and opened himself and brought to me to read. Now he grabs for it every day.He loves to flip through all the pages back and forth, over and over.He strokes all the animals in turn. The book is holding up well, no tears yet and he gets pretty rough. My only complaint is the mirror on the last page could be of better quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Granddaughter Loves It
My granddaughter is 2 1/2 years old and she loves this book every time I read it to her. I would definitely recommend this book.My only suggestion would be to buy it sooner than I did.Little ones love playing peek-a-boo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
The beautifully written story manages to combine a ton of information about bats with a cute little story, and the illustrations are the best!My little GIRLS love this story and make me read it over and over.It reads like a story but offers information like an encyclopedia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bats Galore.....
"Bat is waking, upside down as usual, hanging by her toenails. Her beady eyes open. Her pixie ears twitch. She shakes her thistledown fur..."So begins Nicola Davies marvelous picture book introduction to the world of bats.Follow mother bat as she awakens at dusk, flies out into the night hunting and searching for food, then returns home at sunrise to feed her batling, and sleep again until nightfall.Ms Davies combines a simple and evocative story line with interesting scientific information, fun facts, and trivia.Find out where bats live, how they hang upside down so effortlessly, their special body features, how they navigate at night by echolocation, what they eat, how they hunt...Sarah Fox-Davies' quiet and eloquent illustrations complement the text beautifully, and bring this mysterious little creature and its habitat to life.Perfect for emerging readers, Bat Loves The Night is non-fiction at its very best, and is a fascinating and intriguing book budding scientists will want to study, pore over, and read again and again. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Anthropomorphic Sermons
The problem with fables is that they are, at heart, sermons and most people don't want a sermon on a daily basis. However, if your sermon is interesting and funny and speaks to the world people see and understand, then people listening to it (or reading your fables) will not mind a little preaching. Aesop understood this, as did Jesus. I'm not so certain Arnold Lobel does. While he has a nice idea, the stories in this collection are dry and preachy and the only truly great part of the book is the wonderful illustrations, which are humorous and interesting, everything his fables aren't. If you've got a hankerin' for fables, then go to the source--Aesop. Old, but still good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fables: Good stories with Good morals!!
I really enjoyed this caldecott award winning book.I think that this is a great book for childern. Not olny does it have great illistrations, but it also gives wonderful lessons to children.By using a wide range of animals to play the parts in the stories, the author makes learning these lessons fun for kids.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fables and animalia
I'm on an Arnold Lobel kick these days.Having breezed through the sweet, "A Treeful of Pigs", stopped to admire his treasury of nursery rhymes (two thumbs way way up on that one), and genuflected in the face of the eternally classic tales of Frog and Toad I'm actually getting around to reading his 1981 Caldecott winning picture book, "Fables".Lobel deserves every inch of praise he received for this admirable work.Imagine how difficult it must have been to create not one, not two, but twenty absolutely new fables filled to the brim with wit and wisdom! Not an easy task.Still, Lobel not only faced up to the challenge but also accomplished it in a manner best befitting the gentleman he truly was. These are fabulous fables.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tip 'O the Hat to Mr. Brian Jacques
At just three days old, Deyna's father was slain, and he was taken from his family by the Juskarath clan. The Juskarath believed Deyna to be the prophesied "Taggerung," the uber-elite warrior/ruler of all the Juska clans, even though he was an otter born of Redwall Abbey. After fifteen seasons of rigorous training reminiscent of the Spartans, Deyna realized that he wasn't cut out to be a savage killing machine like the rest of his clan. He broke free of them, and ran off to find his true family. But leaving a Juska clan wasn't that easy. Deyna soon found himself being hunted by his archrival, Gruven, and his vicious fellow clanbeasts. He ran for days across the countryside and through the forestlands, and finally met a creature that he grew to call friend. The creature was a harvest mouse by the name of Nimbalo, who himself had a mysterious and painful past. Deyna and Nimbalo traveled to the mountains in hopes of losing Gruven and his band of vermin and instead found an old shrew named Ruskem, who sheltered the two for a night. During the night, Deyna awoke to find Nimbalo yelling in his sleep, reliving the day he left his father's farm. It seemed that Nimbalo's father had beat him, and that's why he packed up and left. The pair left when morning came, and continued on through the mountains, only to find Gruven's gang yet again. Gruven caused a rockslide that killed several hundred pigmy shrews, even though they were meant to kill Deyna. Nimbalo and Deyna helped the shrews to bury their dead, and then continued on to find a hedgehog named Robald trapped in a mudball. The big otter freed Robald, and followed him back to his home. Robald was due to visit his Great-Aunt Lollery, who lived along the riverbank, so the pair accompanied him as sort of bodyguards. Unfortunately for Robald, he had chosen to visit at the same time as his rowdy country cousins, the Dillypins. Deyna ended up making an enemy out of the leader Dillypin, Jurkin, shortly after arrival. He and Jurkin settled their disagreement with a round of spiketussling, a hedgehog form of wrestling. Jurkin accepted Deyna as an equal, and offered to ferry them down the river towards Redwall Abbey. The Dillypin raft soon came upon the watermeadows, a favorite place of the Dillypin children. Nimbalo went off on his own, and Deyna took a long time finding him. But he was finally found, in his father's farmhouse, standing over his father's corpse. Nimbalo said that he was already slain when he arrived, with a mortal wound that could only have been caused by his father's own axe. A little sadder, the pair returned to the raft and set sail again, to stop at the edge of Mossflower Wood. Jurkin accompanied them a little ways in, but had to return to the raft. Deyna and Nimbalo kept on through Mossflower, and eventually came upon Redwall Abbey, where they were promptly mistaken for vermin and taken captive. It so happened that the Abbey was currently under siege by Gruven's lot, and they wanted the Abbey to hand over the Taggerung. Deyna desperately pleaded to be set free to kill the vermin, and the abbeybeasts complied. Deyna grabbed the sword of Martin the Warrior in his mad dash outside to get to the vermin. Swinging the big sword, he charged straight into the cluster of vermin, taking three arrows to the chest, and slew every last one of them. Deyna finally ended his killing spree several miles down the road, and was found by Redwall's Skipper of Otters. Skipper took him back to Redwall, where his mother Filorn and his sister Mhera saw their long lost son and brother for the first time in sixteen seasons. Filorn suggested that Deyna be taken to Rukky Garge, the otter healer, to heal him, of course, but to also remove all the tattoos covering his face. The process took a good week, but when Rukky had finished, he was even better than new. With renewed strength, Deyna and Skipper returned to Redwall. Filorn and Mhera raced out of the front gates to meet Deyna, who ran equally as fast to meet them, and all three collapsed in a joyful heap on the path.

Long ago the clan of Swaney Rath took a child from Redwall. The baby otter deyna, destined to be the "Taggerung" a warrior of legend chosen to lead the Juska. In his fifteenth season he rebells aginst his destiny.
2-0 out of 5 stars Another 'black and white' plotline
I agree with those who gave "Taggerung" both good and bad reviews. The story isn't bad, just terribly average.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very wordy, disappointing denouement
I saw all the positive reviews here, and bought Amos & Boris to read to my two-year-old. I am often disappointed in aspects of the stories in children's books, and having to read them over and over, stories that my son likes that have endings that bother me can really get to me, so I'm always looking for the good ones.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious and tedious...kids immediately smell it as false
The tedious, self-serving prose in this book reads as though the author loves the sound of his own narative voice WAY too much. His endless, conjunction-addled sentences leave smart kids looking -- aching -- for the POINT. Steig sets up a sweet and caring friendship between a mouse and a whale -- certainly an unlikely pair -- but instead of playing with the natural contrasts there, he overburdens the story with his heavy-handed voice. There is so much focus on despair and helplessness that the story bogs down...and sinks under the weight of Steig's ego.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent childrens book

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
My children (homeschooled first grader and fun-loving 3 year old) both adore this book.It includes every kind of animal your child may be interested in along with tons of facts to grow their little brains. If you have a little animal lover, you will thrill them with this encyclopedia.I am using it as our animal textbook for first grade. We have the Kingfisher Animal Encyclopedia as well, but this one is better in my opinion--it's more visually exciting and plentiful, and I prefer the way this book is arranged (by subject matter rather than alphabetically, as the Kingfisher book is).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid kids encyclopedia
This encyclopedia is a good introduction into the animal kingdom. It does read well and the illustrations and imagery are well done. The categories make looking up animal groups a breeze. There is enough detail and close ups on the smaller animals, which really helps with understanding the animals.
5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite present!!
I bought this encyclopedia for my son's 7th birthday. It was his favorite gift, hands down. He still takes it with him everywhere. The book is full of pictures and lots of neat facts that are enough to challenge a 7year old, but concise enough that he can read them simply. The book is split up into different categories of animals: Mammals, Creepy Crawlies, Birds, Reptiles, etc. Then each category has pages for different types of that creature. For example, mammals has ocean mammals, horses, marsupials, flying mammals, etc. The pictures are wonderful, and as I said, the amount of text is just right. I am so glad I bought this. My son is happy to sit for hours on end looking at this book. I highly recommend it for any animal loving child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars sweet book
My son (now 16 months) has loved this book since he was born.It is really sweet, and at the end I say "... but most of all, mommy loves (his name)" and give him a kiss.He gets excited at the last page and looks up every time to receive his kiss.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book about animals and people's Mommy Love!
I adore this book! And luckily my daughter does too---that isn't always the case with books I adore! It's very simply written and drawn---basically just all sorts of animals and their babies, with each page saying how the Mommy loves the babies---"Mommy Cat Loves Her Kittens" and so on.The paintings are so gentle and simple, and they really somehow show so much love, it almost makes you cry!The book ends with saying that most of all, my mommy loves me, and that's the perfect time always for a hug. It's great to find a book that's simple enough for young babies but also so well done.Highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Picture Book
I bought this for my son when he was about one year old. He loves this book. He picks this among other books because it is big. Loves the pictures (very bright and clear pictures. The right number of pictures on each page) He points to each picture and asks us to name it. Or we play the "Where is..." game. He wants to read this everyday. A great way to increase his vocabulary. He can correctly point at a lot of animals now. There are not many BIG board books with real pictures out there. Atleast I havent found many.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Big animal Book
I got this book for my son who was 2 1/2 years then, after I found this book at my Doctor's office. This book has some primary animals that kids his age should know. This book is very colorful and nicely presented. My son loves to see this book before he goes to bed. He tries to remember the animals he could not remember the previous night.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I purchased this book for my son when he was just learning to talk. We would look through the pictures each day and began by saying what each animal was. The pictures are well done and show all sorts of animals that a child should learn initially. Many of the pictures show the entire body of the animal, not just the face. After my son learned what the animals were, we used the book again to learn animal sounds. He's 4 now and still loves to look at this book. We used this same book for my now 2 1/2 year old daughter. Both kids have learned the animal names, sounds and I feel this is a great book for assisting with the learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true Redwaller

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting look into Martin's past and a wonderful read that takes a look at big issues. Highly recommended
The sixth Redwall novel, Martin the Warrior is the story of young Martin's imprisonment by, escape from, and war against the Badrang the Tyrant, ruler of Marshank. Martin is a young mouse, the son of Luke the Warrior. He is captured and enslaved by Badrang, and one night, after violent insurrection, tied up to suffer through a raging storm. It is then he meets Rose, a maiden mouse from the peaceful sanctuary of Noonvale whose brother Brome has also been captured by Badrang. Martin, Rose, and Brome arrange from an escape from Marshank, promising the other slaves that they will one day come back to free them all and to destroy Badrang and his fortress forever. With the help of a roving band of circus performers and a mass of willful slaves, and across a journey through the coastal lands, Brome and Martin each struggle to stay alive, build an army, and return to destroy Badrang. This is a throughly enjoyable installment of the Redwall series, Martin the Warrior provides anxiously-awaited background to Martin's character as he discovers and refines his fighting spirit, experiences peace in Noonvale, and forms a deep friendship with Rose. The book is exciting, the characters (particularly those of Martin, the warrior Felldoh, and the peaceful Brome) are realistic and inspiring, and the book tackles some of the ethical and personal problems of war and the warrior's life that the other Redwall books overlook. It is a great read, a logical lead up to later Redwall books and to the building of Redwall itself, and one of the better books in this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Parents and Kids!!!
Tacky the penguin is just funny.I love reading this book to my son.He is always demanding that I read it for bed time and he's only 3 years old.We read Tacky the Penguin and Three Cheers for Tacky.I'm just looking to buy him a couple more of the stories since he loves them so much. They all have a good moral about not judging people, and if you were the odd kid now parent (like myself) you will appreciate being able to teach this lesson to your kids at a young age.I highly recommend it for anyone with young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Story with a Great Message
Absolutely one of the best books I've ever read to my children. There is nothing "cookie cutter" about Tacky - and his individuality makes him stand out in the most endearing way.My sons asked for this one over and over again, and it was often the one they'd choose for me to read to their class on our reading day.I think they related to Tacky!Every child should hear this one -- they'll just love Tacky, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars We Love Tacky!
My Aunt who was an elementary school teacher recommended this book to me for our two kids.My boys love it! My 2 year old wants me to read it 4 times in a row..complete with funny voices.Highly recommend!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars exciting
This book was good but not spectaculare. I think it would be better if they caught every bad animal in the castle and came up from Egbert's tunnels. This book is just not as good as the other books of the redwall series.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Redwall books
I recall this book from when I was younger, a lot younger, and I enjoyed it a lot back then. I recall reading it about six or seven times, and I just revisited it now almost nine years later.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Bellmaker, Another Great Redwall Book
The Book i am reviewing is called The Bellmaker. It is a fantasy book written by Brian Jaques. I think it is a good book suitable for kids ages 10 to 13 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL illustrations - narrative "just right"
What an OUTSTANDING book!!We like Gail Gibbons but often find her books a bit wordy for our newly 3-year old. It's not a problem to just talk about the photos or edit narrative for the age of the child, of course, but the perfect balance of this book, BATS, is what makes it such a fabulous find. The illustrations are both realistic and varied, and the narrative strikes the perfect balance between presentation of interesting and relevant fact, and length of text. Our daughter loves bats and this was a perfect book for our family.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!In our opinion, approx. age range 2.5 - 8 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction for young naturalists.
Bats examines different kinds of bats, their abilities, and how bats fit into the world, providing whimsical yet accurate drawings of bats to accompany the basic facts of their world-wide distribution and naturalhistory. No photos, but the coverage is wider-ranging than many. ... Read more
