5-0 out of 5 stars Blackie, The Horse Who Stood Still
This title was purchased for my grand children yet it was my wife and myself who "entered" this special story before passing it on to our younger readers. Mr. Cerf's words reminded us of times past while Ms. Peterson's broad and colorful brush strokes brought life to each page.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Children's Book since Cat in the Hat
Truly an inspiration, the book incorporates a heartwarming narrative with a poignant message of environmental preservation .Congratulations to both the author and illustrator as "Blackie, The Horse Who Stood Still" is clearly the number 1 children's tale in recent memory as it recaptures the innocence and beauty of childhood.I highly recommend it to all ages as I know anyone who reads it will be as touched as I was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great warm fun for everyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Story
This is a lovely picture book. The illustrations are beautiful. It would be a good addition to a library's Christmas collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Christmas Story
This is a heartwarming story of an elderly man and also of a mare lost in a winter snowstorm. For every previous Christmas the man and his wife had gone to the woods nearby and picked out the perfect Christmas tree. They would then take the tree back to their home and decorate it, but the crowning glory of each tree would be when she placed the star on it.He had lost his wife the previous spring and this was his first Christmas alone. He had not gone to pick out a tree because he had lost heart after his loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teen horse lovers will love this!
I just received this book and started on it right away.I thought this would take forever to do but with a little practice I was doing great. I highly suggest this book for advanced artists and the age of 9 and up.This book offers a variety or horses to draw including close-up pictures. If you know your circles and lines you could do this! Also, you only do good if you start out by reading the instructions in the front of the book. You'll want hints.I did good so you will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all artists
I am the best horse drawer in my school, but with this book, I can still find details that I never paid any attention to before!
3-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, but lacking...
I personally feel that this book is for the established artist who knows his basic concepts in art. For the newbie, this might not be the one for you. The drawings within are definitely for those of a slightly higher level.Read more

    Editorial Review

On an island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her--that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can't live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next "Pony Penning Day" does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Misty of Chincoteague
Ms. Bailey's reading group recommends this book to anyone who likes horses or to people who live on a farm.Even though this book is an older book we still enjoyed it.We liked the dialect that Henry used for Grandpa Beebe. We thought it was neat to read about a true story. We think you should give this book a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Horse Lovers Greatest Adventure
This book is a time-winding vortex into a world from a different time. Misty is a young horse which is raised in the wild, by her imperial mother which is a legend. Her mother and her are captured by two young children. A boy and a girl, Misty's mom escapes into freedom but her beloved daughter,Misty, is still being fed, groomed, and raised by the two children. They have tons of fun and exiting adventures together! In the end something amazing happens Misty.... Sorry you have to read it on your own! I think the authers main message is to try new things in life by showing tat through Misty. I absolutly adored this book and have read it now at least 4 times! I really hope you take my advice and read this outstanding book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My girls loved it
My girls, 3 and 5 really like the Little Pony toys and books overall. They pick out the one story they want to hear by looking at the index in the front. They enjoy the pictures and trying to identify the pony with their name.
4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter LOVES this book!!
I purchased this book for my 4 year old daughter as a christmas present. She has asked me to read this book every night since then. She loves the colors and she adores every pony, in the opening of the book the first story is "Meet the Ponies", she has never asked me what the names of her little ponies were before this book but now she almost has most of her ponies names memorized! And she has alot of them! She also told me that she thinks that the ponies are very good friend to each other. She says that they are never mean and they always ask to help their friends. I feel that this is a very good lesson for my daughter to learn. Even though some of the stories are a little pointless you do learn one key thing and that is that friends are very special and you should try always to be a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Storybook!
I am 10 yrs old and I love this story book. You'll wanna read it all day! It has 8 wonderful stories. ''Meet The Ponies'' isn't so bad, it isn't my favorite though. ''Pinkie Pie's Spooky Dream'' is very cool. Rainbow Dash, Sparklesworks, and Pinkie Pie sleep outside and Pinkie Pie has a scary dream. ''A Pony's Tale'' is so fun to read. Cotton Candy realizes that adding the other pony's ideas in the play makes it even better. ''Fun At The Fair'' is one of my very favorites, it starts when the ponies rush to the fair and Minty want a teddy bear, and keeps trying to get it and doesn't give up. ''Pony Party''is very cute. Everybody helps Pinkie Pie feel better and they make her a new costume of of some of theres. ''Wishes Do Come True!'' is fun to read. Maybe you are just supposed to make up your own story about what happens next after Skywishes wakes up. Anyway Star Catcher makes everybody's dreams come true and Skywishes discover where the pegasus's secret hideout is. ''Fashion Fun'' is really cute. Minty picks a rain outfit and keep tripping in it, so Sew-And-So gives her ''gorgeous galoshes'' so she wan't slip, tumble, and trip! The last story, ''Butterfly Hunt'', is auctally very interesting! It is also very cute. Two ponies catch butterflies and find a whole bunch of them, and then they take them for a flight over Ponyville! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Has Been Special To Generations Of Children
Strange in a way that I loved this book so much when I read it in fourth grade, because, ironically, in real life, horses kind of scare me. I think Walter Farley's book is magical and I hope others who read it find as much meaning as I did in the story of a boy named Alec Ramsey, who survives a shipwreck and befriends a magnificent black Arabian stallion. Yes, this enduring classic is basically a fantasy, but sometimes it takes fantasy to create a book that is capable of touching the human soul in the exact way this one does.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quality of the Black Stallion
I greatly enjoyed this book when I was younger, and I still like it. However, in recent years I have come to realize how prejudicially obsessed Walter Farley was about Arabians. Even in his book The Great Dane Thor, the horses only briefly mentioned in the book were Arabians. He didn't seem to realize that there were other breeds in the world. For instance, he had the Black's daughter, Black Minx run in the Kentucky Derby--a race exclusively limited to Thoroughbreds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprise! A clinical description
I am in the middle of lstening to this book. Its detailed descriptions of ranch life and horses are quite compelling. But what surprised me was the absolutely accurate description of a boy with ADD. This book was written some two decades before attention deficit disorder gained anyone's attention, but O'Hara's descriptions of Ken's behavior are absolutely consistent.
5-0 out of 5 stars A COMMANDING NARRATION OF A CLASSIC

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!
On the Goose Bar Ranch in Wyoming, between the World Wars, former Army captain Rob McLaughlin and his Eastern blue-blood wife, Nell, are raising two sons and an ever-growing herd of thoroughbred horses. Rob, a stern but loving father, doesn't know what to do with younger son Ken. The boy daydreams constantly, and for that reason just failed to be promoted at his boarding school. Why should Rob give small Ken a colt of his own, as he already has older son Howard, when Ken can't do anything that demonstrates he's responsible enough to be trusted? Yet a colt is what Ken wants more than anything else in the world. Until he finds out what happens to male horses when they're two years old - after which he decides he'd rather have a filly.

This book was great!!!!!!!!!!! I think the posters were beautiful, but they could have made them bigger, so they could fold out. But they were still very nice because on the back it had cool facts about the breeds. I learned a lot from this book!!!I reccomend buying this book for your niece or daughter because it is very educational. Also, my room is looking a lot more horsey because the photos brighten it up!!![my favorite photo was of the Arabian.]

This book is great! All sorts of beautiful posters of various horse breeds fill it's spine! Buy it for your horse crazy daughters or nieces---they can decorate their whole room with the book! All sorts of wonderful information about some of our favorite breeds! The only down side that I can see is that the posters just slide out if you're looking in the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Western that will appeal to many
I'm not usually a fan of westerns. I don't get that whole prairie, horse, dirt thing that many find appealing.
5-0 out of 5 stars History Made Fun
Like all of Diane Lee Wilson's books, we get some excellent historical background to a great story. Her characters are always interesting and nuanced, not the stock character so often found in young adult fiction. Her stories are set in interesting times and we always learn something we didn't know.In Black Storm Comin, we get an insiders look not only into the Pony Express but also the challenges faced by the bi-racial rider. And the horses!Wilson can write about horses like no one else - she's taking over where Marguite Henry left off. This is a great read and I look forward to her next one.I recommend it for any reader, young or old, male or female.

5-0 out of 5 stars An story of bravery, freedom, and the love of a horse and rider
Based on Wilson's research about the pony express, this story is filled with fascinating facts and tidbits about the old west. But what is so delightful is the intensity of the story, excellent horsemanship, and relationship of a small boy and his horse. It kept me on the edge the whole time. The young protagonist is also bi-racial, adding an interesting twist and subtheme to the entire story. I learned much about the pony express and its riders, as well as the challenges of being bi-racial in early America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic from Beginner Books' heyday
For the first few years after Dr. Seuss established the Beginner Books name (roughly 1957-67), he and his wife Helen Palmer were heavily involved in choosing and editing the books. If you and your child love Seuss then you'll probably enjoy almost any BB book from that period, even those from such now-obscure authors as Heilbroner, Robert Lopshire and Marion Holland. This is a wonderfully charming and positive story with a great "KERCHOO!!" hook; the P.D. Eastman illustrations are also terrific (and very funny).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
We had this book and the copy was so old that it fell apart from reading it so much.My son who is now 4, memorized it at age 2 and we are purchasing another copy because he asked for it the other day so that he could read it to his two year old sister. It is easy to read and understand and children really enjoy it.We highly recommend it and it makes a great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hast thou clothed the horse's neck with thunder?
I reread "Thunderhead" after a hiatus of forty years, and was surprised that I enjoyed it even more as an adult.I had to wonder how I made it through the parts about Rob and Nell's financial difficulties and rocky marriage when I was a teen-ager, but I know I read them because I can still remember details and characters after all these years.
4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I loved THUNDERHEAD. It is powerful and moving, and Ken matured a lot! Thunderhead is such a wild, hideous colt in the beginning, but he turns into a handsome colt--and grows wilder. Ken fears he won't be a racer. Thunderhead is always escaping to dominate a herd of wild mares. He fights with the legendary Albino and becomes strong and fierce. The ending is..a surprise.

    Editorial Review

"A horse is a horse of course unless of course the horse is Black Beauty. Animal-loving children have been devoted to Black Beauty throughout this century, and no doubt will continue through the next. Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of turn-of-the-century London, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Black Beauty
The book Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a sad and happy book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Still a wonderful story!
Anna Sewell's Black Beauty was written around the turn of the 19th century, and it is as remarkable a story to read, and to read to younger children now, as it was then. She does what few authors of her time did, and many do now, but with much greater charm and imagination. She makes 'Black Beauty', a young stallion growing up to be a 'working horse' in 19th century England both her hero and her narrator. We see the story of horses, places and people Beauty knows through his own eyes, and we feel the grounding truth of the story even more that way, And that's why this book is still a classic read, for ages 8 to 98+. I can't recommend it too highly. You will be transported to a very different, and yet a very familiar time and place, in which wise horses and foolish ones, foolish people and compassionate ones live and work and learn how much they depend on one another.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Reader
My granddaughter learning to read loved this book. She's a horse lover, and has imaginary friends, so putting the two together was fun for her.She read it with help from me for only one word, horse. The rest she knew.I'm always looking for books for her to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars sweet little story about holding on to your dreams
Harry has a horse in his room. No one believes him and his classmates laugh at him, but Harry loves his horse and the horse loves him, and in the end we see that Harry has a pretty good grasp of reality too.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
My Daughter loves to draw and she loves this book!!! She is 8 and this was perfect would recommend again!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor book
Since I ordered this for a young budding artist, I was willing to wait awhile until it shipped. What a disappointment - this book is not at all what I expected - I imagine I should have been warned by the price. There is almost no instruction about drawing horses - the pictures are pretty but they will not help in actually learning to draw horses. One star is almost overly generous for a "learning" book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is supposed to teach you how to draw?!
This book is pathetic. It has almost no instructions, only not-very-realistic horse drawings on each page. If you want a great horse drawing book, check out "Anyone Can Draw Horses." This book uses non-conventional methods, such as sketching the basic skeleton to get the horse's shape correct. It never ONCE tries to make you use circles and other geometric shapes. (I don't know about you, but this never works for me! The drawing just gets disproportionate!) However, if you like the circle method, try "Draw 50 Horses." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My Pony
This is a wonderful story perfect for your imaginative little ones. It took me back to my childhood and all the imagining and pretending I did as a little girl. My children were enraptured. I did not give it a five b/c they have not asked me to read it over and over. I think you have to be in a special mood for this story. Great at bedtime! Great for the little girl or boy who dreams of horses or loves animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars For every girl who has asked for a horse...
The is a wonderful book for children who want their own horse and must live with the realization that they can't have one... but it is always nice to dream.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Time Favorite
This has become a book for our special collection-my daughter received it for Christmas at age 4 & still loves it a year later. The illustrations are truly beautiful (as are all of Susan Jeffers illustrated books), and the story is sweet & appropriate for young kids (I'd say 10 and under). It's a story about a young girl who wants a pony, and draws & dreams up her own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Okay
This book was not the best, but I did like morale of the story.I loved the part where Sam rides the phantom, I think it was my fav. part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written
This book was amazing! Terri Farley is such a talented author! I love the part when she is with the Phantom. It is so magical that I feel as though I were there. It's great the way Samantha is kept so realistic and even has weaknesses like all of us. I can understand how Samantha yearns for something she can't have but that makes her bond with the phantom that much stronger. I am sad to know that there is only one more book in this series. I can't wait to see what Terri has for us next!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Tale of Friendship
What a wonderful book! Captivating, exciting and all in all just a great story. A story of friendship, trust, and dealing with stereotypes. This entire series is a great read for any age, but this book has some special value in helping preteen and teenagers with stereotypes. Thank you Teri! I can't wait for Run Away Home in November! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars USPC Manual B, HA, and A
This book has helped me so much! I began reading and studying it at age 10 when I was still a C2, and throughout my ratings and progression it has answered my endless questions and supplemented the material from the D and C manuals. While the B, HA, and A manual is very informative, it should only be read by those who can thoroughly comprehend and extract inportant information from the text. I was alwaysa very mature reader, but at times I even had to reread pages to be sure I understood correctly. This book has helped me through my B, HA, and just recently helped me pass my A, so this book is the best way to go to becoming a good rider!
4-0 out of 5 stars Teaches you about the horse and how to manage a horse.
This book is great for learning about the body systems of a horse. It also briefly explains how to manage a stable with things such as how to make a stall have good drinage. It is the best book to get if you want to meet therequirements of Pony Club levels A, HA, or B. But I recommend getting thisbook only if you are at the advanced levels in riding and horsemanshipbecause otherwise you will find that the book overwhelms you withinformation.I may suggest that people buying this book should considerbuying Pony Club Manuals on levels C and D before or perhaps in addition tothis manual.Overall, a good book for learning about the horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for advanced horsemen of any age.
This is a great follow-on to the first two volumes of the USPC manuals. Together, they are the best "curriculum" on horsemanship available, bar none. (I say that, owning 900 horse books! The three USPC Manuals are the most useful of all.) As another reviewer said, it's not "complete"--one should read the first two volumes, first, as, like the USPC Standards of Proficiency, the Manuals build upon each other. I am a long-time riding instructor (over 22 years), especially with the US Pony Clubs. The three-volumes of the USPC Manuals would be a solid foundation of a good equestrian library. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, poorly executed
I love the idea of a pony coming to a child in a dream. And the pictures are great. But the wording style is dificult for adults to read, much less a child.I need children's book that a child can read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sleep Ponies is one of the greatest children's books ...
... I've ever read.I am so glad that my cousin told me about it.It will be a beloved addition to our library and one I can't wait to share with my grandchildren. You also need to read the second book called "Sleep Pony Dreams" that tells the story from the ponies side - it is also great. These are two must haves if you have children/grandchildren that love horses!
