    Editorial Review

Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out anenergetic young boy? Well, if you're going to go around giving an exuberantly bossy rodent a cookie, you'd best be prepared to do one or two more favors for it before your day is through. For example, he'll certainly need a glass of milk to wash down that cookie, won't he? And you can't expect him to drink the milk without a straw, can you? By the time our hero is finished granting all the mouse's very urgent requests--and cleaning up after him--it's no wonder his head is becoming a bit heavy. Laura Joffe Numeroff's tale of warped logic is a sure-fire winner in the giggle-generator category. But concerned parents can rest assured, there's even a little education thrown in for good measure: underneath the folly rest valuable lessons about cause and effect. Felicia Bond's hilarious pictures are full of subtle, fun details. Fans will be happy to know that this dynamic author-illustrator pair teamed up again for Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book everrrrrr!!
This was a favorite of mine when i was younger, and that has not changed as i have grown older. "If you give a mouse a cookie" is an amazing book. It is funny, interesting, and an all around good children's book. I recomend this book to anyone who has kids or enjoys kids books. It is also a well illustrated book which makes it even better.

My 3 year old son and I love this book.We can't decide which we like more - this one or Numeroff's other book "If Give GiveMoose a Muffin".Unlike some children's books, both the text and illustrations are equally enjoyable. It's especially fun to see how the animals boss the children around and tie them out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aaaaaawww!
I got this book when I was 6 and I still like it! It is the touching story of little Lilly, who loves her teacher but hates him when he takes away her purple plastic purse and sunglasses. It is sooo cute and very fun to read. It is very true-to-life, unlike those other stupid books that think they're tapping into the minds of children. I highly recommend this book. I even have a kid-sized purple plastic purse and a Lilly stuffed animal! This is such a cute book. 5 stars and perfect for any age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Kevin Henkes hit
We read two books to our daughter every night. With that in mind, we pay careful attention to the books we buy to read her. I love all of Kevin Henkes' books. They are both visually delightful and entertaining for both my daughter and I. He manages to be intelligent without being corny, and as I am reading I honestly feel like her vocabulary is being broadened. He never "dumbs down" his book with easy wording. I am also an English teacher and appreciate all aspects of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous--another great Kevin Henkes book
I just started student teaching this semester and this was the first book I read to my third grade class. Some read it already, but were still very excited to hear it again and again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Despereaux is a fun book.
I would recommend this book, The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo for animal lovers and lovers of fantasy. Despereaux, a mouse, is born in the medieval times.A rat named Roscuro captures the princess and the brave mouse Despereaux goes to save her. The book is about bravery no matter how small you are.
4-0 out of 5 stars A book review of "The Tale of Despereaux" by Chris C.
The main characters in this book are a mouse named Despereaux, the Thread Master, Princess Pea, King Phillip, Miggery Sow and a rat named Roscuro. The story mainly takes place in King Phillip's castle and the dungeon. The story begins when Despereaux Tilling is born.He was born in the light. He was born with his eyes open and he had big ears. All of the mice were very suspicious of him since he was born with his eyes open.He was the smallest mouse to be seen by the other mice in all of the castle.Only his family was nice to him.

Cute book about some white mice who get into some paint. They paint themselves and mix the colors to create all colors of the rainbow.Great book for learning what color combinations create other colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning color mixing
This is an excellent book for children learning their colors. It starts with three white mice that see three jars of paint, one red, one yellow and one blue. They start playing in the paint and their colors are changed. Not content with being red, yellow and blue, they enter paints of other colors and their color is changed to the mixture. Yellow feet in blue turn to green, red feet in yellow become orange and so forth. The illustrations are minimal, yet effective. I strongly recommend this for children learning how to mix colors to make new ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Painting mice, how nice
My daughters loved this book during ages 3-5.In a cute yet simple way, the mice delightfully display the primary colors and then show the creation of secondaries. Inevitably, after reading this book for the first time, your child will want to get out the watercolors and some paper.Whenever a book spawns activity, it is a sign that learning happened. ... But Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with a sick child, is in dire straits and must turn to these exceptional creatures for assistance. Soon she finds herself flying on the back of a crow, slipping sleeping powder into a ferocious cat's dinner dish, and helping 108 brilliant, laboratory-enhanced rats escape to a utopian civilization of their own design, no longer to live "on the edge of somebody else's, like fleas on a dog's back."Read more

    Editorial Review

How terribly surprised the Little family must have been when their second child turned out to be a small mouse. Apparently familiar with the axiom that "when in New York City, anything can happen," the Littles accept young Stuart into their family unquestioningly--with the exception of Snowbell the cat who is unable to overcome his instinctive dislike for the little mouse. They build him a bed from a matchbox, and supply him with all of the accoutrements a young mouse could need. Mrs. Little even fashions him a suit, because baby clothes would obviously be unsuitable for such a sophisticated mouse. In return, Stuart helps his tall family with errant Ping-Pong balls that roll outside of their reach.Read more

I thought Stuart Little was a great book. Stuart is not a ordinary mouse, he is an adventerous mouse. The book was much better than the movie!

    2-0 out of 5 stars Strange ...
What a strange little book. Much is made of the fact that Stuart's parents - especially his mother - worries about him constantly, yet when he runs off to find his bird friend, he tells no one! And Stuart is obviously gay, not that there's anything wrong with that (I'm gay ... check out the illustration on page 31) He doesn't really want to date the girl, he's more interested in his canoe ...

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT For Five Year Olds
The fact that the hero of the story is a mouse does not make this a good book for young children. The language is difficult and the humor is rather understated, i.e. "The doctor was delighted with Stuart, and said that it was very unusual for an American family to have a mouse."At its heart, Stuart Little is a comedy of manners, and the fantasy takes a back seat to the witty dialogue and neat prose.Children will enjoy it at ten and love it in adulthood. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A nice book, with issues.
Mouse's First Halloween has nice illustrations (if a little dark, so it's sometimes a bit hard to make things out--which, don't get me wrong, is true-to-life for an autumn night), and Mouse is endearing. But my husband and I wonder about the message that there's never any need for fear.Mouse probably SHOULD be afraid of kittens and falling apples--either could hurt a small animal.None of us wants our children to be unnecessarily frightened, but throwing caution to the wind isn't the best idea either.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Adorable Halloween Tale
My son, age 4, and I first picked out this book at our local library and it became an immediate favorite. The illustrations are adorable and the rhythmic verse is delightful. After reading aloud to my son over the course of several nights he memorized it!Now I am purchasing the book because he does not want to return his copy to the library. Now, my son gets great pleasure reading to his mommy and daddy.I must say we are brimming with pride ourselves. I even told my son's teacher- "let him read the story to you!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by Catherine R. - 9 years old
With a hamster that can read and write and a little girl named Sophie that is only 6, the troubles will never end.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Review From a Hamster Obsessed Girl
This book is really good! It is about a hamster named Freddy, who goes through many adventures! Freddy is an unusual hamster who can actually read and write! He has lots of friends. Enrico and Caruso are his friend guinea pigs, that make poems and can get on his nerves a lot, but he still can consider them friends. Sir William is his cat friend, a civilized cat who wont eat Freddy. Also, there is Mr. John and Sophie. Little Sophie was his original owner, and he always watched her do her schoolwork so he could learn how to read, but then her mom had an allergy to hamsters, so he had to live at Mr. John's. Mr. John has a computer that he can write his stories on. "I, Freddy" is a really great book, and if you read this one, you will want to read his other books: "Freddy in Peril", "Freddy to the Rescue", and "The Haunting of Freddy". I hope they come out with more soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mattimeo! The new champion of Redwall!
Mattimeo is kidnapped by Slagar and his gang along with many other young ones. He is forced to travel to an evil kingdom where he will become a tortured slave forever. But, Mattimeo's father and many other parents are hot on Slagar's trail ready to fight him and any other obstacles that they may encounter.
4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful coming of age story and exciting travels into the southern lands. Not the best in the series, but still recommended
The third book in the Redwall series, Mattimeo is the story of Mattimeo, Matthias the Warrior's son, who is captured by a slaver and taken on a long journey far to the south of Mossflower Woods--a journey that will turn him from a youth into a warrior. Slagar the Cruel, a masked fox, is a slaver determined to bring ruin to Redwall and to the warrior Matthias in particular. When he kidnaps Matthias's son, Mattimeo, along with a number of other youngsters from Redwall, it seems that Slagar will achieve his goal. As he forces the slaves on a long march deep into the barren, dangerous southern lands, Matthias and a band of warriors go to rescue their children. In their absence, the Abbey is attacked, leaving the peaceful abbeydwellers to defend it. The three storylines run concurrently, keeping the action moving. Riddles hidden deep within the Abbey bring aid to the rescuing warriors and reveal long-forgotten knowledge about the Abbey's founders. A coming of age story is combined with exploration, riddles, and battle, making for a meaningful, readable story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely Crafted!
I agree that this book could become a classic. Its simple storyline will attract the young and its eternal truth--that every age has a purpose--will appeal to people of all ages.It is exquisitely crafted and the illustrations reflect the mood superbly.I read it to my two grandchildren ages 7 and 9 and they asked me to read it again.Than they took it off to their room to read again on their own.Highly Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Help For Kids
As autumn is quickly turning to winter, a leaf reflects on his life as a vibrant green leaf. To his surprise, he discovers that he has worth in his "later days," too. This is an allegory about living life to its fullest ... and accepting the surprises along the way. This is a fun read, but will be particularly great come fall, when it will be easy to bring the book to life. It is a nice reminder that we are only limited by the perceptions we create for ourselves. The book offers several layers of learning, depending on the child's age: what happens in the fall, how life changes, and self-esteem. It wouldn't take much to draw lessons about aging parents/grandparents from the story, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving story about discovery and finding meaning
What could well become a classic children's picturebook for young readers ages 4 to 8, A Simple Brown Leaf is the collaborative effort of author L. J. Davis and illustrator Lisa Victoria. This is the story of an old autumn leaf caught by a squirrel preparing for winter's onslaught. The leaf's journey reveals that its life has more than one purpose. When it was young and green, it was part of the tree; when it turned brown and fell, the squirrel needed it to survive the bitter cold of winter. A moving story about discovery and finding meaning. "You are meant to do something wonderful! Someone loves you! Someone needs you... just like the squirrel needed the simple brown leaf."

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely, utterly, charming!
As a children's librarian I often read this book aloud to "my kids" and it was a hit every single time. It's all about cooperation and learning to accept your friends despite all their faults and foibles.I heartily recommend it for one of those chilly fall days--serve soup and crackers as a snack.

5-0 out of 5 stars The MOST fun book to read a toddler
We read lots and lots of books to our 2 year old daughter and I've never written a review before but this book really knocked our socks off.We LOVE this book in our house. It is not only fun for my daughter, who loves it when we use different voices for each of the characters, but is fun for us... So many books for this age group, particularly board books, are really boring after several reads.Even one of my all-time-favorite books from my childhood, "The Monster at the End of this Book" gets a bit wearing after the umpteenth read. But this one always stays fresh. This and "Is Your Mama A Lama" are at the top of our list, fun for a two year old and fun for the parents too.Get this book. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read...
the Gruffalo has all the elements of a great read...repetition, rhythm, suspense, humour. My four year old was in fits - he's gone off to bed muttering 'owl ice cream'! and giggling merrily to himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read for parents too!
I picked this up on a trip to the UK - our 2-year old loved it. Next trip I picked up The Gruffalo's Child which is equally good (read The Gruffalo first as The Gruffalo's Child is a sequel). ... Read more
