5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book
This is a delightful book, which shows that there IS help for some species via the conservation efforts of dedicated environmentalists. And FYI, the efforts continue today. You can find out more (and view the PUFFIN CAM during the summer - morning viewing is best) on the web site for the project run by Dr. Kress and his staff - projectpuffin.org

4-0 out of 5 stars one of my favorite childrens' books
this was one of my favorite books when i was little.i checked it out at the library almost every week.the photographs are beautiful and lucid and the writing is informative (but tells a compelling story).this is a really great book for kids who like to learn about rare animals.another book, slightly longer but on a similar subject, is _The Wheel on the School_.It's about storks and has pencil illustrations rather than great photographs, but i think people who like this book would also like that one.

4-0 out of 5 stars project puffin
Hello. My name is Anna and I'm 8 years old.I think that Project Puffin is a very inspiring book and that the baby puffins are the cutest thing in the world.I am glad they got the puffins and other sea birds back to Egg Rock and other places. If you are cruel enough to think that wearing feathers on hats is a good idea, you will not like this book.People, like myself, who are concerned about nature will like this book a lot. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Books!
So far, I have purchased Eye Wonder Ocean, Reptile, Rainforest, Dinosaur, Bugs, & Big Cats & have not been disappointed yet. These books are absolutely wonderful. Not only are they filled with interesting information but the pictures are gorgeous.Anyone who has a child who is interested in science should give these books a try. Definitely 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting for young readers
My six-year old just received this book as a present. He his obsessed with birds, but this is the first book on birds he owns that is not a field guide. The book is nicely laid out, with chapters on each of the different classes of birds such as songbirds, birds of prey, waterfowl. There are also chapters on bird behavior such as courtship and nesting. There seems to be an appropriate balance of stunning photographs and text. The text highlights the main points, example "Fast Fishing: Ospreys fly high over water, diving down at high speed to catch fish.Just before hitting the water, they thrust their feet forward and plunge into the water to grap their prey. The osprey's feet feel like sandpaper, which makes them useful for gripping slippery fish."Finally, the book contains a glossary and a list of bird habitats for each of the species discussed in the text. Ideal for any young bird lovers! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Roger Tory Peterson, one of America's pre-eminent artist-naturalists and arguably the inventor of the field guide, made people love birds like no one since John James Audubon. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Misrepresentation
This book was bundled with another bird book, and the offer appeared directly under the Peterson Field Guide book, which I thought I was ordering. It was not very obvious in the small thumbnail image and description that it was a child's coloring book. I did not get what I wanted and have since returned it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the older birder
I purchased this book for my mother, who is in her 70s.She recently started birding so this was her first field guide-easy to read, large pictures make identification very easy for the beginning birder of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and the best
Peterson first published his revolutionary field guide in 1925, and ever since it has been the trusty companion of amateur and advanced birder alike. The popularity of his field guide was based on the system that he devised whereby he included coloured plates of each bird, and noted key identifying features of each bird, thus allowing the birder to make quick and confident identifications. The system is not fool-proof, of course, as some species closely resemble one another, but oversall, the tricks one learns from the Peterson field guide provides an excellent foundation for the aspiring birder.A number of other guides have come along, but I still find this one more than suitable, and therefore the one that I continue to rely on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A is not for Apple anymore!
Jerry Pallotta books are an exciting and unique way to learn the alphabet. No more A is for Apple Z is for Zebra! Details are perfect for my 4 year old to understand and remember. We've read as many Jerry Pallotta books as I an find.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations but for which age?
This is a wonderful book for its concept and illustrations. If it's meant to help teach the alphabet to young children (which I believe it was judging from the picture of the toddler on the last page), then some of the bird choices for letters are too complex. Examples: A is for Atlantic Puffin, N is for Northern Cardinal, W is for White-Faced Scops Owl. This is an ambitious attempt to be precise, but it is does not match the cognitive and linguistic stage of a very young child. Still, it's a nice book, especially if you want to inspire a child's curiosity about birds.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY good for starters...
This is an excellent book for those who are beginning to form an interest in raptors. It goes over their nesting habits, hatching and growth, flight, hunting and feeding. Also has genus and basic anatomy (Skeleton, musculature, feathers, talons, etc.) information, as well as a short overview of falconry. Well layed out, informative, and the photographs are excellent.
