5-0 out of 5 stars Charming!
A charming idea to think of adoption as being related by love and law. The author shows in moving and funny words how Oliver gets angry at his parents and fantasizes about his birthparents. The parents in turn let Oliver know that they, as children, when they got angry at their parents, fantasized they were adopted and that their natural parents were fun people to be with. Oliver is pleased that his parents understand him and he's happy to live with them again. This book would be good for non-adopted kids too.5-0 out of 5 stars The Happy Iguana
I like seeing Oliver climb a tree because I like to climb trees. He reminds me of myself. I liked Oliver going into space because I want to go to the moon. It's natural to think about your birthparents because I sometimes do. Buy it! You'll like it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars There is NO difference. LOVE conquers all.
Excellent choice. OLIVER appeals to all ages. What made it more special was that Oliver was a DINOSAUR and every child I've met likes dinosaurs and stories about them. Great way to explain the trials and tribulations of being adopted. Our son enjoyed Oliver going into space because he wants to go to the moon. I highly recommend this book and the black & white illustrations invite a child that enjoys art to even color the pages to make it more personal. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book - lousy binding
My son loves this book, but after about 4 readings it started to fall apart and about 5 pages are now floating around somewhere in my house.Great book, just get the hardcover copy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book falls apart
This is my grandson's favorite Froggy story. However, the quality of the paper back book is abysmal. Both copies fell apart within 24 hours, with the middle pages detaching almost at once. Children's books must be durable and these are not. Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great early reader!
My son is 7 1/2 and just getting to the point where reading is less of a chore. This book has many of the skills he needs to practice and does so in an informative, engaging way. Lots of the words end in "silent E" or "ing"...I'll have him read a couple of pages a day and these small, consistent efforts are really yielding fruit. I should warn the squeamish that there are pics in there showing snakes eating rats and other animals. But 7yo boys are notorious for finding such stuff cool (so do I). Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm only seven And it is great
I just learned to read in first grade. The pictures were so great that I really wanted to read it. I started and finished in one day. I don't like reading that much, but I don't mind reading when it is something cool like snakes!Read more

Editorial Review

Lyle the crocodile lives in a house on East 88th Street in New York City. He likes it there, and his hosts, the Primms, like having him around--he helps young Joshua with his homework, jumps-rope with the neighborhood kids, and browses through antique shops with Mrs. Primm. Much to the affable reptile's dismay, however, he makes his neighbor's cat Loretta crazy, which in turn makes Mr. Grumps, Loretta's owner, even crazier. One day, Mrs. Primm and Lyle are shopping, when Lyle--through no real fault of his own--ends up infuriating department-store bigwig Mr. Grumps who turns red and blue and purple with rage. This unfortunate eruption lands the rollicking reptile in the Central Park zoo where Lyle fights back his crocodile tears. In an elaborate sequence of events, Lyle finds himself back with the Primms on East 88th Street, a neighborhood hero, and, startlingly, even a friend of the mistrustful cat Loretta. 5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I just purchased this title for my 4 year old daughter, and she (and I) really love it!!! The title of the book doesn't really grab you but it's a sweet story about how the neighbor Mr Grumps really doesn't like Lyle, has him banished to the zoo, and then Lyle ends up saving Mr Grumps. I really like the characters in this series because they remind me of real life people that your kids will have to deal with at some point or another. My daughter was totally engaged.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Remember
I am now 21 years old and I can still remember the opening line to this tape. The Lyle books are wonderful for children and this tape is a great way to put your child to sleep. The Lyle books are truly one of my greatest childhood memories!

5-0 out of 5 stars A crocodile just as sweet as Pogo's Albert the Alligator
A picture book with more backstory than you could possibly imagine. For many, the delightful "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" is a perennial favorite.I, myself, had never read it before. When first we see Lyle, he's standing in the center of Central Park (this is most definitely a New York based book) feeding the ducks.Occupying a swank apartment (you should see his bathroom!) with the Primm family, Lyle is everyone's favorite crocodile. He's polite, helpful, and wonderful at double dutch. The ever dour Mr. Grumps next door has problems with the beloved Lyle.Mr. Grumps continually threatens to send Lyle away, but it isn't until an unfortunate department store incident that Mr. Grumps makes good his threats. In the end, however, all turns out for the best and Lyle is reunited with his loving family.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful for children--and adults!
The artwork lured me to this book. Each page has a marvelous rendition of a sea turtle's nesting saga. The storytelling is accurate but lyrical so even the youngest children will be captivated. I highly recommend it for parents and grandparents to give to the children they love--especially if you're headed for the beach!

My grandson, Cameron Howard, has checked this book out from the library on numerous ocassions.Despite his generally responsible attitude toward returning books in a timely manner, he just can't get this book back when it's due. Why?Because he is busy reading and re-reading the book.He iscaptovated by the pictures. He is infactuated with the text and dazzled bythe illustrations. He called me up to see if I could get him this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Cama cama cama, cama chameleon
The concept of photography as an art is finally coming into its own.Once reluctant art centers are placing their Edward Westons alongside their Claude Monets. As recently as 2004 the very first Caldecott Honor was given to a picture book that contained photography in some way (it was "Knuffle Bunny" by Mo Willems). And Joy Cowley has singlehandedly reinvented the notion of the photographic picture book.Having begun this process with "Red-Eyed Tree Frog" (a title that National Geographic Press must feel they should've gotten first dibs on), Cowley has once again paired with photographer extraordinaire Nic Bishop with the multi-colored and magnificent, "Chameleon, Chameleon".Until these last two books, the notion of a fictional photographic tale has never been properly realized ("Stranger In the Woods" by Carl R. Sams does NOT count). Now all that has changed and Cowley & Bishop can be commended for formenting an entirely new genre in the picture book oeuvre. No small task.

This gift from my mother in law for my son sat unused on the shelf for about 2 years before he discovered it at the age of 6.Now suddenly it's the favorite "toy"; dragged to school, on short car trips across town and kept close during every spare moment at home.He knows instantly how to find his favorite spreads on the alligator snapping turtle and the crocodile skulls - invaluable for impressing his friends, teachers and complete strangers. This book inspired a very keen interest, to say the least!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the stronger Eyewitness books
For those who are new to the Eyewitness format, it consists of thematically arranged two-page spreads of brilliant photographs on a white background. There is an intro paragraph in the upper left-hand corner, but most of the text is in the captions that go with the photographs.Generally, the biological sciences titles are the strongest in this series, since other topics often need a more organized progression of topics. You'll get a lot of information out of these books, but you won't get a systematic anaylsis.

Editorial Review

Chet Gecko, fourth-grade private eye, has been framed. Someone's beenstealing the pickled spider eggs, cockroach quiche, happy-spider lasagna,deep-fried termites, and candied butterflies from the Emerson Hicky Elementarycafeteria, and it's not Chet. But while on the case, this hard-boiled detectiveis tricked into eating a knockout pillbug muffin; when he comes to, he'ssurrounded by the remnants of someone's filched feast, and no one, not Mrs.Bagoong, the giant iguana cafeteria lady, not even his mockingbird partner,Natalie, believes he's innocent. What's a gecko to do? A lot of detention forone thing. And some deep digging into this mystery, which involvesshoulder-rubbing with one Rocky Rhode, a "horned toad with a short fuse and arap sheet as long as an elephant's suspenders."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read Me!
Chet Gecko loves to solve mysteries, and here's one of his greatest. Mrs. Bagoong, the lunch teacher, is devastated when food disappears from the lunchroom. Who is behind it? A ghost? A cobra? Read this book and find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars farewell my lunchbag
The main characters of this story are chet gecko and natalie. They are detectives at a school. They are on a case to find who the food theif is. Chet gets knocked out while guarding the school's lunch supply and is framed. He knows hes innocent and is looking for the theif. Natalie thinks he might be on to something. They go and search and chet finds out that the snake is behind all this. He trys to tell the principle and he says "Show me proof" so chet goes and finds the theif and calms him with a flute. This takes place at chet's school. The meaning of this story is that you should not try to be innocent and admit what you've done. I liked this story because it is a mystery and you never know whats going to happen next. It seems like you know everything at first but you are able to find out what happens. Thats my ending so bye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Hilarious Addition to the 'Chet Gecko' Series
It is a known fact that Chet Gecko, fourth-grade private eye, loves anything having to do with food. Especially if it involves eating it. So Chet nearly loses his mind when the lunch lady, Mrs. Bagoong, informs Chet that there is a food thief plaguing Emerson Hicky Elementary, and she needs Chet's help to catch him/her. Mrs. Bagoong gives Chet and his mockingbird sidekick, Natalie, a muffin each as a down payment, and soon the two of them are on the case. However, this case may have been a bit much for Chet, for now he's been framed for the crime, and is facing a life of detention if he doesn't catch the thief. And quick.
