3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book but not for Just Starting Readers - a review of DK's "Tale of a Tadpole"
This is another of the Eyewitness Readers series.Labeled as Level 1 --Beginning to Read-- I think that it would be a little too much for a real beginning reader.[I think of a real beginner as one who might start with the first Bob Books.]
5-0 out of 5 stars Eyecatching and manageable for beginning readers
I wanted this to be a book my child could read to me easily, as we are moving on from phonics readers and the like. The pictures are great, as is the case with most DK books. The only word beyond my five year old was 'tongue' which was one of the picture words (i.e. one of about eight words that are clearly defined by a picture within the book). There were no 'gh' words or other tricky ones to trip a beginning reader up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to read, then read to learn!
While living in Africa we would often rescue frogs from our pool. Sometimes eggs had already been laid and the eggs were wrapped in a clear jelly. In the stream near our home we would collect tadpoles and take them home to show mom. Sometimes we found what we thought were miniature frogs. They were just baby frogs and we were sent back to the stream to release them so they could grow up and be productive insect hunters.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Did You Know.....
Did you know that there are around 120 different kinds of chameleons, that their eyes move separately and their very long tongues have a sticky tip at the end?Did you know that chameleons are lizards, that some are the size of small cats and that they change colors when they're angry or too hot or cold or sick...but not to match their surroundings?Martin Jenkins loves chameleons and his enthusiasm is infectious. He's authored a marvelous book full of fun and interesting facts that's perfect for all young nature lovers. His enjoyable, conversational text is complimented by Sue Shields colorful, expressive artwork, that will mesmerize youngsters with its close-up attention to detail.Written for kids 5-9, Chameleons are Cool is a winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
This is a valuable resource for a child, teen or possibly a frog-delighting adult:)I was impressed with its clear format, language and the clever puzzle type model of the make-up of a frog.It says on the front from age 8 up but my 4 and 7 year old devour it greedily and have absorbed much (gruesome) fact on these creatures.Highly recommended from a biological and anatomical point of view. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely funny
A very appealing book, and a favorite from Pinkwater. Good for both boys and girls, especially those looking for something funny and original.

4-0 out of 5 stars Introduce Your Young Reader To The Wonders Of Drug-Free Tripping!
Manus Pinkwater is a pretty cool kinda guy. He has the unique feature of being as tall sitting as he is standing, and that makes me wonder if the convex dimensions of an author's backside are somehow related to the quantity of his imagination. You see, Manus writes far-out books. No, no, I mean...realllly far-out books. I think hepasses the Twilight Zone somewhere in route to where he goes to pen his creative little novels. Lizard Music may take the cake among everything straaaaange he's written, however. This story puts your brain in a food processor and hits frappe. What's it about? Oh, you want to know that, don't you? Okay.
5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite book as a child
I first read this book in fourth grade.I wore out several copies and haunted used book stores to locate them to give to young friends as I got older.I'm now purchasing copies for my nieces and nephews as birthday presents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Akimbo The Innovator
In this Akimbo book, Smith brings us an Akimbo wizened by age and adventure. Here Akimbo wishes to accompany the crocodile man who is tagging baby crocodiles in order to study survival rate in that part of the jungle. Most baby crocodiles become meals for other larger animals, and there was an interest to observe the number that survived to adulthood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great counting book
In this book ten turtles are sitting on a log, but one by one, they each jump into the water when startled by other creatures of the forest, like bullfrogs, ducks, and deer. The story rhymes, and has a lot of alliteration. At the end of the book is a reference section with short informative descriptions of the animals mentioned in the text. This is great for parents who are faced with follow up questions after reading the book. The story, with its countdown plot, makes a great wind-down at bed time.It has about 60 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond
Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond is the story of a day in the life of ten Eastern Painted Turtles. The basic premise of the book is learning the numbers one thru ten. The book begins with "Ten timid turtles, lounging in a line.Startled by a bullfrog...Then there are nine."Various creatures continue to disturb the turtles. One by one their numbers dwindle. The story concludes with all ten turtles reunited for the night. The numbers one thru ten are then reviewed.Falwell includes 2 pages of ecological information at the end of the story.Information is included about all of the wildlife mentioned in the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Language booster
My grandson loves this book! He likes to count the turtles, find the animals, and make all the animal sounds. He's even noticing the lively verbs and adjectives and has used them when he talks! Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too morbid for us!
We recieved this book as a multi-pack with more science related books. This book DOES NOT TEACH anything other than fear of snakes. The author seems to have found that small voice in the back of children's heads that only nurtures their deepest fears.I'm throwing it away.It only gives my children something to fear and nothing to learn.

Commander Toad and the crew of the good spaceship Star Warts are bored out of their minds. They have played all of their games like leap frog and croak-kay, they have read all of their books like "Robin Toad" and "The Lizard of Oz," and they have watched all of there movies like "Splash Gordon" and "Indiana Frog and the Lilly Pad of Doom" so many times that the crew is desperate for something different. The good news is that the crew of the Star Warts get the diversion they want, but the bad news is that what breaks up the boredom is a gang of space pirates, led by the notorious Commander Salamander, the Scourge of the Skies and Goon of the Galaxie, who has a new game for the hostage crew to play: Hop the Plank.5-0 out of 5 stars Argh, mateys!
