5-0 out of 5 stars Enhanced with superbly presented photography
Supercroc And The Origin Of Crocodiles by Christopher Sloan (Senior Editor for Art, National Geographic magazine) is a nonfiction children's picturebook about ancient, gigantic crocodiles of millions of years ago, and their modern-day descendants. Enhanced with superbly presented photography, color illustrations, and amazing facts about these ancient reptiles, Supercroc is an exciting and highly educational read for children ages 8 through 12.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supercroc is Super!
You are really going to enjoy National Geographic Supercroc and the Origin of Crocodiles. This hardcover with dustjacket new book is written by National Geo's art director Christopher Sloan (Feathered Dinosaurs) with an introduction by Dr. Paul Sereno, discoverer of Sarcosuchus. This beautiful book is packed with photos plus numerous paintings and illustrations from none other than world famous paleo artists Mark Hallett, Doug Henderson, John Sibbick, and National Geographic's talented new wunderkind: Raul Martin. The informative text describes for readers of all ages topics such as the definition of a crocodile, the world of Sereno's "Supercroc" Sarcosuchus and its fossil discovery, a prehistoric history of crocs and their cousins and the differences and similarities they share. You'll be amazed at the variety, from lizard sized saurians to giant Sarcosuchus who fed on dinosaurs. The final chapter titled "The Last Extinction?" discusses how crocs have survived 200 million years but now are seriously threatened by man. A fantastic full color work for all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool.
I purchased 5 books of this series for my five year old daughter for Christmas, as she is a nature lover and loves anything to do with science. After reviewing these books before giving them, we decided to use them as part of our science program for our home school. These books have bright and colorful pictures, short accurate explanations of the animal, their habitat, eating habits, and even some of the popular anecdotes that go along with the animal. It has the appropriate warning for studying certain animals. What we enjoy most is many of these animals can be found in our back yard to furthur study. Each book deals with three types of animal, such as snakes, salamanders and lizards. They are separated into sections dealing with each type.At the end of the section is a wonderful hands-on project the child can basically do on their own within the recommended age group (9-12) or with some assistance for a younger age group like my daughter. My 5 year old begs us to read these books to her and loves the projects.I highly recommend this bokk and others in the series for those who want their children to learn about nature and how to respect it.I can't wait to obtain the remaining books of this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snakes, Salamanders, and Lizards-- A Children's Delight!
I used Diane Burns' book as an aid for nature programs while I was working as a naturalist. Each animal is depicted in full color with pertinentdetails and hazards to watch for. Young kids love the colorful pictures oftheir favorite "slimy" creatures, while older kids can read theinformation and learn where and when to find the creatures. I found thatBurns' book works better than a more sophisticated source when working withchildren, as it is written at their level -- but adults can also gain muchknowledge from the information. My congratulations to Diane Burns forwriting such a wonderful book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for My Little Snake Lover!
My three-and-a-half-year-old wants this read over and over. We found it at the library, then had to purchase our own copy. My husband grew up "all boy" with his younger brother; and, now my two sons are doing the same. This book encourages boys to be boys, and is so much fun! The illustrations are wonderful. We can't wait for "Space Station Mars" to hit the shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and Imaginative - My Kids Love It !
My son and daughter (5 and 3) love this book - and I do, too.The story includes brothers catching snakes, finding "dinosaur bones", collecting tadpoles, and turning their club house into the snake and reptile club -- little adventures that really got my kids' imaginations racing. My kids are making plans for their own club house and would love to catch a few creatures to put inside, too.Really eye-catching, funny illustrations. And, unlike some kids' books, it manages to include characters who seem like real kids who make a little mischief, but are not negative or bratty. We read a LOT of books and this one is a stand out. We can't wait for the next club house book! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Determined to find the perfect item to complete his special collection(which includes, among other things, an old blue sneaker, a Popsicle stick, abottle cap, and an acorn), little Platypus sets off to the beach. "He didn'tknow quite what he was looking for, but he was sure he'd know it when he sawit." After hemming and hawing over various treasures--seaweed, a big rock, adeflated beach ball--Platypus finds exactly the right thing: a lovely curlyseashell. Unfortunately, what our funny little hero doesn't know (and whatsharp-eyed readers might figure out sooner than he) is that the shell iscurrently occupied.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a delightful book!
My children ages 4 & 2 love this book. They find Platypus' reactions and innocence delightful and laugh everytime we read the book (currently 3-4 times a day). My two year old loves this book so much that he "reads" it to himself by retelling the story from looking at the pictures. Another great thing about the book is that it's taught my children about hermit crabs and not to carelessly "collect" objects from nature. I especially love the delightful and child-like illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent illustrations and FUN story
Don't listen to a negative review of this book!My two kids (4 and 2) love the story and get a huge kick out of watching the hermit crab peeking out of the collecting box, and pulling one over on Platypus. We also get lots of giggles when the crab bites Platypus's foot. This is definitely a book I recommend and don't mind reading over and over.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Australia's intrepid hero
Ladies and gentlemen I am here to announce to you that there is a definite dearth of worthwhile children's literature involving platypus protagonists out there.Certainly you'll find them shuffling around the edges of various Australian based books. But they're never the heroes. There was Anita Hewett's charming 1958 concoction, "Think, Mr. Platypus", but it's a little old.So FINALLY we find Chris Riddell's 2001 picture book, "Platypus".It's a little repetitive and it certainly doesn't explore the lifestyle or appearance of real platypuses (platypusses? platypi?) but for the preschool set this is just the story to be told.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for historical facts
This book is about Lucretia Motts life. Much of the book is taken from her diary or historical documents. The book allowed the reader to experience her life of hardships and struggles to give women more rights. The book would be a good selection for upper elementary teachers to use as a read aloud. ...
