    Editorial Review

"Good night, Gorilla," says the weary watchman as he walks by thegorilla cage on his nightly rounds at the zoo. The gorilla answers by quietly pickpocketing the guard's keys, stealthily trailing him, and unlocking the cages of every animal the oblivious fellow bids goodnight to. Looking much like an exhausted father, the uniformed guard traipses home toward his cottage, while the lonely zoo animals softly parade behind him. The animals manage to slip into his bedroom and nestle unnoticed near his sleepy wife--until the bold little gorilla goes so far as to snuggle up beside her as she turns out the light.Author and illustrator Peggy Rathmann (creator of the Caldecott-winning Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, easy reading BOARD book.
This sneaky gorilla steals the zookeepers keys. As the keeper says goodnight to all the animals, the gorilla is behind him (with his pet mouse who is dragging his banana for him) letting out all the animals so they can spend the night in the house of the keeper. Cute, colorful illustrations. Repetition of words and known animals allows this book to be an easy reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
We have recieved this book as a gift, but had to buy it too, because my baby have been reading it too much! The book was "torn" to separate pages, because she wouldn't go to sleep, in the car or even eat without it. The pictures are great! And it is hard book, so my girl also tried her teeth on it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gorilla!
When my son was born, two of our friends independently decided that the best way to buy him a baby gift was to take their young daughters to a book store and let them choose books they thought he would like. This was the only one they both selected. Our son is still in the "I licked the corner and it was good" stage of book appreciation, but I've enjoyed reading it to him.The pictures are colorful and interesting, with lots to point out to a small child. And the storyline is surprisingly gentle, with the gorilla leading a parade of zoo animals to the zookeeper's home where they all curl up around his bedroom for sleep. It's easy to see how this one made it onto the favorites list. ... My 17 month old loves this book. There is something for him to open on each page and he has learned all the sounds of the animals. This book was recently listed in Parent's magazine as "Our Favorite Baby Books of All Time"and I can see why.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wild About Animals
The book Wild About Books is a fiction book by Judy Sierra. The main characters are Molly McGrew and animals at the zoo.
5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly ONE OF THE GREATEST RHYMING BOOKS I've read yet.
This book has a dedication at the end to the author's favorite doctor, Dr. Seuss. The style of this book is quite similar to his famous rhyming stories but in its own style.Judy Sierra, author, really shines in this book with her choice of words and importance of really truly being wild about books.Through one of the main characters, Judy teaches animals to be nice to their books and to read all types of books. She explains haikus and zoolitzer prizes with terrific descriptive words. The paintings, done by Marc Brown, accompany the story perfectly.Marc painted such detail, variety, precision and just plain old fun-looking animals. One of my favorite parts/rhymes from 'Wild About Books' is, "In a flash, every beast in the zoo was stampeding To learn all about this new something called reading." or one of the more clever pages, "Raccoons read alone and baboons read in bunches And llamas read dramas while eating their llunches."I think this story will truly inspire children to read and enjoy it.Definetly great to use in a classroom or be read by a librarian with lots of enthusiasm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful for all Ages!
Wild About Books is one of my school's favorite read alouds for students who are kinders through fifth graders. The delightful Seuss-like rollicking rhyme accompained by humorous artwork makes this a standard for every classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BUY
This text is an invaluable picture book for children learning how to read, how to enjoy reading and to learn about the joys and absurdities that life can bring. It is a humerous text that utilises excellent illustrations to represent the plot. The plot itself humerously intertwines fantasy with reality, ofcoarse it depends upon the child's imagination. A must for any child that enjoys playing with words and surreal ideas. The book's design is additionally unique in that is in an organisational folder style whereby children may select various imaginary creatures as they choose. I hope that others can share this wonderful picture book with all children they read to and/or with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elicits Wonderful Langugage
This is a great book that reinforces a strong message to children. I read this book every year in my classroom during the first week of school. I do not focus on the colors in the book - I feel that the story's value lies in the message that everyone is unique and special. The kind of responses that children offer in response to this high-quality piece of literature is amazing....a great read, in the classroom and at home.

    5-0 out of 5 stars The Mixed-Up Chameleon,School Project
I think that "The Mixed-Up Chameleon" by Eric Carle is a really great, fun and interesting, and a great learning experience for children.Personally, I have loved this book since as long as I can remember. In the beginning, it describes a chameleon that is bored of its boring life.He then goes to the zoo and sees all kinds of different and beautiful animals.Astonished by the sight of all of them, he wishes to become them one by one.He must wish to be about ten animals including a person. After all of this excitement, he sees a fly and......Well, I can't tell you what happens!Buy this book and your child(children) and you can find out together.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SUCH AN AMAZING STORY
It is such a wonderful and true story that teaches kids about all different types of families. One of my favorite books of all time, I suggest it to anyone and everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars www.lazyreaders.com book club recommendation for April 2006
A touching story of two penguins at the Central Park Zoo that admire the other penguins having babies but cannot have one of their own. When a zoologist notices their dilemma, he gives them an egg for their nest, where they nurture their egg until the day their new baby is born. A beautiful book with some pretty deep messages (but I'll let you enjoy the deeper message for yourselves). 5-0 out of 5 stars And Tango Makes Wonderful
This book is absolutely wonderful: the illustrations are soft, wonderfully executed, and accurate inasmuch as how Central Park Zoo looks.I picked up this book out of curiosity and was pleasantly surprised at how the authors emphasize how love and family go hand in hand no matter if it's two moms, two dads, or yes, even two penguins and a ball of fluff that comprise it. It is definitely a book I would pass on to any child to teach them about the nature of love and diversity and any adult willing to teach that lesson. My only regret is that there aren't more books out there like this, and more people willing to open their minds and hearts to its message: bravo Tango, and bravo Parnell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars charming vintage story about a spider at the zoo
Billy is moving to an apartment that doesn't allow pets, so he leaves his beloved spider Helen at the zoo, where she promptly improves everyone's lives by eating all those annoying flies.Things are great until the head of the zoo sends out a misguided order to clean up the zoo --including those spider webs. This is a great book about unexpected and mutually beneficial relationships, and is good for bug lovers and haters alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent philosophy
I know most kids won't read this book too deeply, but this book is so in line with one of our family philosophies that I've bought several copies for friends. The theme of the book is, "if you have special talents, don't get discouraged just because someone doesn't appreciate them. Look for a place to shine." This is so opposite the Rainbow Fish philosophy, "subjugate your individual gifts so others won't shun you."
5-0 out of 5 stars A correction for everyone.
Great reviews but I have to let everyone in on something, he is not a dog, bear or lion. I hope I don't ruin your childhood memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sammy the Seal
One day, Sammy the seal decides that he wants to go outside of the zoo to see what life is like in the outside world. During his adventures he walks along a busy street, swims in a man's bathtub, and goes to school. I think it is really cute how people don't even notice there is a seal walking down the street, or if they do they don't act like it is any thing out of the ordinary.4-0 out of 5 stars Classic story for children
Basically the same story as "Danny and the Dinosaur" and not as ingenious. However, Hoff's illustrations are always a joy to look at. And the scoolteacher is definitely hot. I had a crush on her as a child, and still do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sammy The Seal
Sammy the Seal lives in a zoo in the city. One day, as Mr Johnson was feeding the seal, he asked Sammy waht was the matter; as Sammy was looking very sad indeed. He told Mr Johnson that he wanted to get out of the zoo, and have a look around the city. He looked at everything, but soon it was too hot for him, and he ended up taking a swim in a man's bath tub. He then found a liune of children waiting to go to school. Sammy learned to read and write, and he was very good at vollyball. After school was out, Sammy went home to the zoo. He was glad to be home--it was supper time. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Overrated!
This book is more a prententious piece of art than educational material. If it weren't for the bright colors and 'easy to rip' pages my toddler wouldn't have an interest in this book. What does it teach children?Nothing at all.All the animals look the same to toddlers with nuances only an adult can distinguish. The only reason this book won an award it appeals more to adults who are bored of the common formula found in most children's books. There's a reason we keep finding the same formula in books- "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Delight!
My 2 year old just discovered this darling book. He enjoys running his fingers over the cut out areas and talks to the animals as they appear. We haven't had any problem with the quality of the book. The pages are nice and thick and have held up to being drag around by my little guy- And I'll admit he can be tough on books! Color zoo has become a night time favorite. This one is a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Fun, & Educational

    1-0 out of 5 stars Racist.Not recommended.
I bought this to give to my niece for Christmas but it contains several highly racist bits as the boy travels to different countries to collect animals for his zoo.He goes to Asia where he meets "helpers who all wear their eyes at a slant" (accompanied by WWII propoganda-style caricatures of Asians). When he goes to Africa the animal he captures is held aloft by two tribal Africans illustrated in the typical minstrel show/early 20th century racist exaggerated style. And he goes to Russia to collect a bird "whose headski is redski and belly is blueski."

5-0 out of 5 stars CURIOUS GEORGE VISITS THE ZOO
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR CHILDREN. MY GRANDDAUGHTER LOVES ALL THE BOOKS!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for pre-schoolers and early readers!!!
This series by Margaret Rey is a wonderful introduction for preschoolers to stories with a simple plot line. In Curious George Visits the Zoo, George gets into mischief (which children can always relate to....) butredeems himself in the end by saving a young boy's balloon. In CuriousGeorge Visits the Fire Station, George is naughty when he rings the firealarm, but again shows his better side when he rescues one of the firehousepuppies by climbing UP the firepole. In Curious George and the Pizza, hemakes a mess trying his hand at tossing pizza dough into the air, but savesthe day when he alone can make a crucial pizza delivery by climbing over alocked gate. Young children enjoy comparing the plots in this series. George is told not to get into trouble, he gets into trouble, then heexonerates himself. Parents, grandparents, teachers and child-careproviders will all enjoy this series along with their youngsters!

    Editorial Review

"Down by the station, early in the morning," before any visitors arrive, who exactly is riding that zoo train? Hop aboard and find out! See the elephant calf waving good-bye to Mommy and Daddy. And there's a pink flamingo chick, ready to ride. Who's this sleepy black-and-white cub? Still wrapped in a blanket, the panda isn't quite awake yet. The train chugs merrily along, picking up baby animal passengers. But beware! There's danger in the pond beside the tracks. Will the seal pup and baby penguin escape from the circling crocodiles? "Did you ever wonder who rides the train early in the morning, before the zoo opens?"[from flyleaf]
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers
We just love this book.My 2 year old son and 3 year old daughter really like this book. They get a kick out of the animals that get on board. My son especially loves hearing this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars You will get your money's worth over and over again
We bought this book after we checked it out of the library and my daughter did not want to return it (at 15 months of age). Now at 22 months, she loves to look at every page, finding the little details (like the seals waving goodbye and the monkey's antics). She can "read" her first words, "Danger, Uh-Oh and Phew!" I totally disagree with a previous reviewer who mentioned the separation factor and the panda using a blanket. This reviewer is reading WAY too much into the book.AS an educator of 13 years, I think this book is wonderful. The illustrations and details are inspirational. The words put into song make it a fun book to read over and over again! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining book
This book is so vibrant and colorful, its hard to imagine any toddler not loving it.There's not much to the story, no rhymes, no moral - just lots of beautifully drawn images of things kids love. The one drawback is very soft pages and soft flaps that can tear easilty in rough hands. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Giggles galore
My son lights up and laughs when he sees this book.He loves the peekaboo concept, but giggles even harder when mommy gets the sound "wrong." If you are signing with your child, this book provides a great opportunity to reinforce the sign with the animal sound.5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
My 8 month old son Oliver loves this book!We have read it so many times that I can simply recite the book & he will instantly smile. The pictures are lovely . . . colorful, simple & large. The sounds of the animals delight him.I would highly recommend this book to other parents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars adorable!
I'm a children's Librarian, and I can't wait to recommend this book to the kids.I'm sure they will love it as much as I did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Something tells me it's all happening at the zoo
A couple months ago a child walked into a library where I was the children's librarian.Softly she asked if we had anything else by the author of "A Room With a Zoo".My library is notorious for getting new books in late, but in this particular case I had seen the title already in a bookstore.I showed her Jules Feiffer's other books, like "The Man In the Ceiling" and "A Barrel of Laughs, a Vale of Tears".She looked them over vaguely but they were obviously not what she wanted. What she wanted was another book exactly like, "A Room With a Zoo" and I (not having read it) was hard put to find her something similar.Time has passed, I have read the book, and I STILL cannot for the life of me figure out what I should have told her.Feiffer has deftly tapped into a single child's love for the animals she keeps in such a one-of-a-kind way that animal loving kids out there are sure to find a kindred spirit in the character of Julie.Using everything from slapstick to sweet moments to the reality that comes with owning a variety of different animals, Feiffer is always real, always interesting, and never dull.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hideous disappointment.
This book isn't cute at all - it's actually chilling if you like animals, understand that an animal isn't a toy, and realize that sometimes a kid isn't ready for a pet. This is clearly the case with Julie, the young "heroine" of this book. In her first misjudgement, she tries to introduce her hamster to her full grown cat, despite having been warned repeatedly that it would not work. The cat naturally tries to kill the hamster. Is this supposed to be cute? Funny? Whichever it is, or not, her parents respond to this display of bad judgement by buying her an oscar (a carnivorous fish). After a time, she decides the oscar is lonely & buys some goldfish, which she adds to the tank for the oscar to "make friends" with - again, despite a warning from a knowledgeable adult (in this case a pet shop owner, who proceeds to sells her the fish anyways in yet another display of the adult idiocy with which this book is rife - at least Julie has the excuse of being nine) that a hungry oscar will eat anything it wants to. She wakes up the next day to find that the oscar has indeed eaten one of the goldfish. Even after that, the menagerie continues to grow, with things spiralling further & further out of control as the work required to properly care for the animals far outstrips the young owner's ability to look after all of her charges. If anything, this book should be read as a cautionary tale about making sure that a child understands the responsibility that an owner has to care for an animal properly prior to indulging that child's request for even one pet, and as a warning of the fact that the parents need to be ready to step in & take over that responsibility, should the child not be ready. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture book
This book is filled with great pictures for kids just reading to too young to read for themselves. The story is told through the pictures, so it is fun and easy for them to follow along. Our son really loves us to read it to him, and I highly recommend it as a first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the hippo happy -- and kids too
Describing this book is going to take more words than are in it, all of which more or less rhyme with "rhino." And that's good, because there aren't many books that manage to be uncomplicated and hilarious at the same time.
5-0 out of 5 stars A children's book that makes kids really sit up and take notice
Newman's second book is a gem! As with his first, Reginald, he illustrates with an incomparable talent.Hippo, however, is a very special addition to any child's collection.Readers actually have to look closely at the characters' facial expressions and body language in order to tell the story. What a refreshing idea!Kids are not spoon fed ideas or a story with this book; they must create the story themselves. What is NOT said is what is so special about this book.In an age of too much stimuli and information, this is truly a very sophisticated concept and great way for kids to slow down and really read a book, each reading bearing new discoveries and subtleties.Great book! ...
