5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
Nice art and poetry. It's one of our favorites. I love reading it to my children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lilting story
I first bought this book because I was fond of the author.Reading it the first time to my daughters' first-grade class, I cried. The author, Libba Moore Gray, perfectly captures the dance of the changing seasons and how the mother and daughter celebrate. After I finished the book that first time, a very rough-and-tumble boy asked, "Is that book poetry?"Of course it is!The best kind: the kind that reaches children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure
I gave this book to my mother for Mother's Day after being introduced to it in one of my teaching methods classes.Gray uses words like paint on a paintbrush, dipping into serious deep blues and greens while tossing in dashes of bright yellows.Colon's illustrations enhance the carefully chosen and eloquent words, bringing them to life. This is truly a book to be shared by daughters and mothers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great classic returns
My family had the cassette verison of this classic when i was a kid. We used to listen to it on all of our family vacations. So, of course I needed a copy for my children, they love it! My four year old knows all 50 states! Great music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
This is a wonderful way to teach children songs of the past! They are lively and fun as well as educational. Yes, some songs are shortened but it gives them a taste of what they like. It is our job as parents to dig deeper as our kids show intrest in different areas of history. This is a helpful tool not an exhaustive composition of every old song. As for the sexist comment of another reviewer...Oh dear, I just have to laugh! Do you not realize that the presidents WERE men who were quoted??Did it occur to you that maybe the girls were not interested in quoting men? Why does there have to be some scheme against women? Good grief! Enjoy the music and try not to ruin it for your kids by making up political issues out of it. This is about making history fun, not politics of today. My 6, yes, 6 children love these songs....even the girls who NEVER even noticed a boy was saying a few quotes! For all of you other people who know how to teach your kids to enjoy history I highly recommend this lively, catchy CD. The Wee Sing folks have made another winner!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Treasure!
My grandma bought this as a cassette for my sister for her 6th birthday. We listened to that tape all the time all year round and on all our family trips.Since then we have grown up and moved a couple times.During the moves she lost the tape and the whole family has been sad.So for her 17th birthday this year I decided to look on amazon and there it was on cd.I bought it and she loves it!The whole family is listening to it together. It is great! The quotes and songs are so wonderful and uplifting and you can sing right along. This collection of patriotic songs should be in every American home! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, not as musical as I thought.
This is a good book for music teachers to have, but don't expect to use all 101 games. Many are variations on a theme, are impratical in the classroom, or simply are not very musical. An example of this is a game where students have to act out the titles of songs, like Charades.Sure, it'd probably be fun, but it's hard to say what the students are actually learning about music from that.I'd say there's 10-15 games I think I might use - or leave for a sub to use.I also would modify most of them to make them more appropriate for a limited classroom space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
This book is SO GREAT for teaching music and music themes at home.It works for any number of children, but it is best for a small group of about 3-6.I used it with only one, and it worked ok with some modification.Great variety of games that kids really enjoy playing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funtastic
Music is fun for play and doesn't always have to be taken so seriously. These well thought-out games are adaptible for so many different moods integrating the rhythum and beauty of auditory art into activity for kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good starting point
This is a very well written and illustrated story about a young boy who encounters Vincent Van Gogh and befriends him.It is based on a true story. While it is well done and my children love the story, I was a little bit disappointed that it included only imitations of Van Gogh's paintings and not actual pictures of them.I felt that even though there is a sad element to this story, the author did an excellent job of making it suitable even for small children, and sparks their interest in learning more about his life and works. We will be using this book this year for our homeschooled kindergartner and preschooler, and I am sure that this will be a great starting point for further learning and discussions. I give this book four stars and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars bringing van gogh to life
i used this book to teach an art project to pre-schoolers and it was perfect! they enjoyed the story very much and it made the portraits of Camille's family, which they had already seen in other lessons, come to life and at the end when they see the picture of "14 sunflowers" they became excited about creating their own sunflowers out of fimo clay. A beautiful book and a well written story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely and interest-provoking
This is simply one of the best books I ever got my daughter. When she was about 1-1/2 years old, we took her to a Van Gogh exhibition and she stared, absolutely transfixed, at "Wheat Field with Crows." So when I saw this book, it seemed like she would really enjoy it, and she has. Note that it is not an entirely happy story, true to Van Gogh's life, so it is maybe not for tiny kids. But even recomposed by Anholt, the paintings are still amazingly vivid and interesting, and led us on a web search to find more (http://www.vangoghgallery.com/ is the BEST spot!). If I could only have a few books to read to my daughter for the rest of her childhood, this would be on my list, and hers as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
The person who received this book as a gift loves the plays in it for their class.

4-0 out of 5 stars great theatre resource, plays fun just to read too
Coleman A. Jennings was a professor of mine at the University of Texas at Austin, and this collection was a required textbook for his class. Instead of selling back the book when the semester was over, I kept it, because the plays are such good ones. As the Booklist review says, the anthology includes original plays as well as adaptations of well-known folk and fairy tales. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book has many different and interesting plays for kids of all ages. Though, for most of them you need a lot of people, they are still pretty good. Thats why I give it 4 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars David Macauley is brilliant!
This video presentation of the building of the city of Rome is a must for anyone interested in the classics or architecture.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Roman history
I am a huge fan of David Macaulay's historically based line drawings.I found myself drawn into the images and fact-based fictional story.I forgot I borrowed this for my children! After you read the book, you may want to view the PBS video Roman City hosted by Mr. Macaulay. It features footage of ruines as well as animation sequences that follow the story set-up in City.Be sure to include this book in your study of 1st century BC / AD Rome- you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book
If you're studying Rome, you NEED this book! There are no pretty colored pictures here, no photos either, just very clear, exceptionally detailed line drawings that make it apparent even to quite young students (I used this with a grade 3 homeschool student) how very much "modern" life owes to Roman engineering genius. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a five year old
I bought this book for my five year old boy.Based on the description, it sounded age appropriate. However, it was a little advanced for him so we returned it.Maybe better for eight and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly simple to learn, no tears
Some art books can make kids cry in frustration with, "I don't get it, I can't do it". I have never had that problem with books from this artist, kids just love these!Ed Emberly has made some wonderful books for kids and grown-ups of any age that have no drawing skills, but want to learn a simple way. His books are the easiest books to get you started if you have no previous drawing skills. He doesn't talk down to you, he doesn't talk at all but uses his step by step method for you to follow. As a result, you can use these books for kids that have language issues. He starts with a step by step illustrated lesson to draw one simple item. First a simple straight line here, then insert a circle then, then another line, step by step along the way and before you know it you have a completed drawing that you can be really proud of. I teach Cub Scouts and this artist makes the perfect book for teaching a class when you are a volunteer yourself that is not an art pro.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Your Older Artist
This is a book that uses stick figures and basic shapes to help children learn to draw more complicated pictures. This is an interactive book to teach drawing. Every little artist will enjoy the simple step-by-step drawings and colorful illustrations that Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Trucks and Trains contains. Smaller children will learn new words while their older siblings can use the book to learn how to draw more complicated pictures than just stick figures. However, it is somewhat difficult for the four-year-old child. An age recommendation on the book itself would make buying the book a little easier for parents and gift-giving relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have truly enjoyed sharing this book with my adult kids and my grandkids.Everybody gets into the action

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
I got this book to use as a means of decorating gifts with atractive but inexpensive ornaments. At first I was unsure if the project would succeed, because the snowflakes seemed so elaborate.I was amazed at the effects that I could produced with very little effort. Each of the designs is based on a simple folding technique that reduces the actual cutting to a minimum. When you see the illustrations it becomes instantly "doable" in your mind.I ran into some difficulty due to the choice of my experiment paper: it was too thick and unyielding when folded as needed.A lighter weight paper cured the problem.Origami paper is beautiful, light enough, and already comes in the required square shape.I also found that, as the author stresses, a very sharp pair of sissors is indespensible to keep the cuts uniform through the entire stack of folds and to achieve the sharp corners and turns required for some of the designs.I found a very sharp pair of surgical scissors did a wonderful job, though the handles were a little hard on the fingers, especially the thumb, when cutting through the thicknesses required.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun and creative book
At some point in our childhood almost everyone has probably folded paper and cut snips out of it to form a snowflake pattern. Now this snowflake tradition is no longer just for the winter.Following Cindy Hingham's specific folding pattern you can copy one of the 72 stencils in the book onto the paper, cut them out and end up with a snowflake pattern for any holiday. The patterns include hourglasses for New Years, hearts, arrows, cupids, and lips for Valentines, shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day, bunnies, lilies and baby chicks for Easter, Liberty Bells, and stars for the Fourth of July, pumpkins, black cats, owls, and ghosts for Halloween, Christmas bells, and snowmen for Christmas, teddy bears, dogs, cats, butterflies, love birds, and many others.Snowflakes for All Seasons is a very creative and fun craft book for children and adults and is very highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fat Kid Is A Must Read
I was blown away by this story. Having had a difficult few years in middle school and also possessing a love of independent music, I was enthralled with this novel from start to finish. It read like a soundtrack to me. During the sad moments, I read slowly, taking in each bittersweet word. When Troy and Curt's spirits were rising, I read briskly, often frenzied, wanting to experience the next word before my eyes could shift. From ballad to punk rock explosion, I rode the 'musical staff' of emotions of Fat Kid and got to purge some of my residual childhood angst.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fat Kid rules the world
Left alone in the dark world, Troy Billings is about to change his life. A the ago of seventeen and 296 pounds, he is miserable and about to take his life by stepping off the edge of a subway platform into an oncoming train. Curt was just the opposite of Troy...ammaciated, homeless, known to people, agenious, talented, loud andone of the most anorexic people alive! Tryoy had a second thought once he met his match..Curt..who happened to have an interest in Troy knowing how to play the drums for onc in his life. going through his brother who thinks Troy is the bigest loser in the world and thinking Curt is a drug addict...Curt thinks he could become more...he settles for a life of dignity and teaches Troy Billings to join a band that could possibly change his life forever...

1-0 out of 5 stars Foul language shows lack of talent

4-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable
Since I don't really play the piano (yet), I was happy that this book came with a cd with a piano accompianist. The songs in this book don't go very high, and they are not very difficult. It is great for beginners, and the songs are familiar and fun.I do agree with the reviewer who said not to use these songs in auditions, however. The reason is that these songs are overly done, so the people doing the auditions cry inside when they hear the same song repeatedly.Great for beginners or people just trying to have fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable!
This is my favorite Amazon purchase to date. My children and I have had a lot of fun with this book. They can't read yet, but we sit around the CD player or in the car and they sing along with their Disney favorites and are learning the words to many other famous and more complicated works.South Pacific, Cats, Grease, The Phantom of the Opera, Camelot, Oklahoma, Les Miserables, . . .Classic! There is a lot that can be learned and enjoyed among the 33 titles and 158 pages of music.Well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for some
I think this is a good book for learning musical theatre and voice, especially for teens and kids. However, I agree with a review below me; there are many songs in here that are overdone, and this is definitely a popular book. I always see people with this same book at auditions I go on, and (in my experience) everyone tends to do the same songs: Wouldn't it Be Loverly, I Could Have Danced All Night, On My Own, and Unexpected Song, to name a few. However, there are a few gems that people don't do as often: The Simple Joys of Maidenhood, It's a Most Unusual Day, God Help the Outcasts, etc. Even those, however, can be done over and over. This is great for the young, amateur performer, it offers good, age-appropriate songs that can really be helpful. The songs are mostly all in the mezzo range, very few go above an F on the staff or below middle C, and for the most part fall between a middle C and a D on the staff. An alternative to this book (if it doesn't sound like something you'd like) would be one of the Singer's Musical Theatre Anthologies, also in the Hal Leonard collection. They have three different (and are coming out with a fourth) volumes for each voice type, soprano, mezzo/alto, mezzo/alto belter, tenor, baritone/bass (I'm not positive those are all of them). There are more songs in them (I think there's forty-something in the first soprano volume) and have more obscure songs, much better for using on auditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very usable - great resource!
You will use this book over and over. I teach gifted upper elementary and middle school drama students. This book is one of my favorites - it is likely to be one of yours too.

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Drama Games is excellent!!!
101 Drama Games for Children is a really excellent book! I highly recommend it for all parents and older children to buy if you deal with children in any way. I teach a drama class of 5-7 yr olds in our homeschool group and it's been a real lifesaver for me! I also have 3 children and I use it with them too. I consider it a must-have book! It's catagorized by the different age levels by a little picture in each corner of each new activity so you can flip through and find a game for the age group you need. It's excellent for birthday parties, or any group games: camps, Girl Scouts, etc. I highly recommend every parent get one of these books! B.J.O.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I teach theatre classes for kids from age 3.5 to 18 and thisbook is one of the few I've seen that gives a good number of ideas foreach age group, and it gives you an idea of which games are age appropriate. This is a valuable tool that I would recommend to anyone who teaches, or just those who are stay-at-home parents who need new ideas for playing with their kids in creative and dramatic ways. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
I gave this kit as a gift, and it was a huge hit.My cousin said her two little girls were zebras all weekend.Lots of fun for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Face Painting
This book is an excellent take-a-long for any face painter professionally but is also fantastic for the beginner. It not only comes with face paints but the pictures are basic enough for any birthday party or event. The spiral binding lets it lay flat so you can look at the picture as you draw it on the face. Excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, great for parties.
Great paints, but it would be nice to have more ideas in the book for uninspired people like me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Tool
Structuring Drama Work is both a deliciously practical and a tacitly theoretical handbook for teachers/leaders of drama. This is no small feat for a book that is only eighty-four pages in length.Neeland's book deftlyexamines the infinitely important notion of the structures and conventionsused when teaching, facilitating andlearning through theatre/drama; whileit concurrently argues for the need for flexibility when designing for andworking with students of theatre/drama. David Booth sums up the conceptof theatre explored in this book when he describes the author's view oftheatre as, "a meaning-making endeavour that interprets life and helpsus to understand our world" (P.1).The strength of this book is thatit does not get bogged down by such an ambiguous or esoteric definition;rather, it uses this definition to elucidate the potential power of dramain each of the lives of those who choose to suspend their disbeliefs (P.72)and participate in the collective endeavour of theatre. Most of thebook is a compilation of current conventions applied in drama/theatre andused to enhance the educative process of expressing the world throughsymbolic form.Context-building, narrative, poetic and reflectiveconventions are explored in detail; they range from simple games to tableauto complex conventions like whole-group role-playing.Rather than focus onexamples ad infinitum, Neeland focuses on the description, culturalconnections and learning opportunities of each convention. This is wherethe power of the book is located; teachers, rather than just mimicking rote exercises, are given the reasons for the use of the convention andappropriate times to employ it.This fulfills an absolute requirement ofteaching: the ability to answer the students' legitimate question of"Why are we doing this?!?". On page seventy-nine there is adiagram that clearly illustrates the purpose of the conventions described. My initial response was that I would give this diagram to my students;however, on page eighty-two Neeland writes, "To be too definite andclear about the intentions and focus of thework in advance is to deny thestudents the power and experience of being artists."Neeland isarguing here that the power of the Gestalt or "Aha!" component oflearning should not be too quickly dismissed. My feeling now is that Iwould let the needs of the group I was working with dictate whether or notto reveal the purpose of the unit to them.I believe this is in line withNeeland's tacit theory, that the needs of the group supersedes the needs ofthe program or the teacher. The teachers who employs Neeland's methods, over time, will likely learn to wed teaching the conventional structures ofdrama to the spontaneous needs of the students. Neeland's adoption ofthe female form of the third person pronoun and his use of the term"teacher/leader" demonstrates, I believe, his implicit subversionof the current pedagogical patriarchal paradigm.Neeland appears to beundermining the role of the teacher as the repository of Truth.Hisexamples are wonderfully open-ended and he appears to be encouragingteachers to employ both conventions and there own examples according to theneeds of the students. His theoretical approach can be glimpsed throughinstructions like, "... whereas well-researched context-building actionand the controlled pace of reflective action may produce challenges toassumptions and prejudices." (P.74). This is an invaluable bookboth as an easy to use reference of theatrical/dramaticconventions and asa reminder of the endless and fruitful possibilities of learning throughtheatre. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Greg Tang!
Greg Tang encourages his audience to develop number sense in a lively way. With the help of this and his other books, you can encourage your students to develop a more fluid approach to math. I have used many of his books in my classroom, and find it is best to pre-teach his way of combining number sets before reading the book aloud (just a short lesson).
5-0 out of 5 stars Math and Art - What A Great Combo!
I love this book and have shared it with colleagues! What a great idea to combine math and art, and what a great way to tackle problem solving which is not always a favourite with kids! For teachers, it helps us cover two subject areas at the same time which we greatly appreciate. When I saw the cover of this book, I was instantly intrigued.I liked the fact that it's suitable for all age groups -- older students may appreciate the art history aspect more, but the rhymes appeal to all ages. The illustrations jump out, are appealing and make math more interesting. When I showed this book to some of my students, one instantly said that it was "neat" because everyone came up with a different way of getting the answer yet everyone was right, to which I responded with a delighted smile!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful math/art connection
Bravo, Greg Tang has done it once again! This wonderful book is full of authentic masterpieces which Tang recreates to get us looking at the art in a "math kind of way!"This book is super for all elementary levels, kindergarten through grade five. The focus is on addition, and the many ways we can group numbers to get to a given sum.We love it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stuff!!
My cousin had the Klutz Window Art book and paint set and I tried it and loved it right away.If you have the Window Art book, you HAVE to get the deluxe refill set! There are several new colors and two black outline paints. It is easy to use and dries well (although it does take about 24 hours to dry).Great rainy day project! If you have kids that like art projects or you love art projects yourself, you have to try this product!

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth it, for a fanatic
If you only think window art is 'kinda neat', you probably don't need this refill set. There are a few more colors -- the white and clear make some really pretty Tiffany glass style effects possible, for those interested in spending the extra time -- but really there isn't that much more here than you'll find with your standard set.5-0 out of 5 stars Klutz does it again!
My 2 children love the Klutz books. The window painting book is their favorite and this refill kit is great! It comes with several colors and the big bottles of black that you need for the outlining. My daughter loved the glittery paints. The kid went through the paints that came with the book in just a few days - their windows are covered with clings, and this refill kit was just what we needed. ...
