4-0 out of 5 stars The American Boy Handy book
This book goes back to the eartly 1900's. It was before boy scouts came into existanc. Thre were many handy illustrations of how to make a dug out canoe, build a tent, make a fishing pole. It was so interesting to see how people had fun in the outdoor before all oof the luxeries of toeday. I have used this book as a research tool for my next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, highly recommended!
This book was originally published in New York City, in 1890. It is the work of Daniel Carter Beard (1850-1941), a fun-loving boy-at-heart, who organized a boy's organization (the Society of the Sons of Daniel Boone) and was later instrumental in the establishment of the Boy Scouts of America. This book is a wonderful collection of projects that a boy can make, everything from kite making and fishing to tying knots and camping. Sound familiar?
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Daniel C. Beard for writing this book.
An excelent guide on many unique projects. It tells you how to tie many knots, make boats, snares, and hunting tools like bird-bolas and throw sticks. I don't care what anyone says THIS BOOK IS NOT OUT OF DATE! Just because over a century has passed since being written doesn't mean that one won't enjoy making sleds, snow forts, and whip bows. Sure it's old fashioned but not out of date. One can still enjoy the many projects, I certainly enjoy them more than the tv. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be
I teach drama/theater in a low income public school. I bought the book because my school has very few resources and I thought this might be useful. As it turned out the book was hardly used during my first year teaching. My biggest problem with this book is that it is not very user friendly for a teacher who just wants to add some fun to a class but not a complex game. In other words the book needs to make the games simpler so the kids can pick them up faster and have more fun. This might not be problem for teachers in high school as your students might be more mature and able to handle more complex games. But for middle school teachers tread lightly. Also if you have a bunch of behavior problems in your class then forgot about it. In my experience I found the worse the behavior the better they were at spoiling fun classroom games. Be warned.

Editorial Review

Gerald the giraffe doesn't really have delusions of grandeur. He justwants to dance. But his knees are crooked and his legs are thin, and all theother animals mock him when he approaches the dance floor at the annual JungleDance. "Hey, look at clumsy Gerald," they sneer. "Oh, Gerald, you're so weird."Poor Gerald slinks away as the chimps cha-cha, rhinos rock 'n' roll, andwarthogs waltz. But an encouraging word from an unlikely source shows this glumgiraffe that those who are different "just need a different song," and soon heis prancing and sashaying and boogying to moon music (with a cricketaccompanist). 5-0 out of 5 stars GERALD GETS HIS GROOVE ON
My 3 year daughter received this book as a birthday gift. Almost a year later, it is still her favorite (and mine as well!). The story is cute, funny and endearing. There is also some good lessons taught. Overall, a real feel good story. And the illustrations are just beautiful.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!
This book is a wonderful story about how each of us has a place in this world and a unique way of living into that place, IF we can only find the right music to live by (or dance by in Gerald's case)!Great for use with children AND with adults!Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite childrens book
We were given this book while my daughter was in the NICU. We read it to her at least once a day and we never tired of it. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Tragedy of the Tragically Unaesthetically Pleasing Review
"The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" by William Shakespeare proves to be an amazing read if one thoroughly enjoys the challenge of deciphering the selective form of writing and occasionally complicated dialect. This classic play is based on the true, factual account of the assassination of Julius Caesar as it truly took place in 44 B.C. Of course, Shakespeare has completely made the story his own through the use of comic relief, characterization, and wonderful original composition. Julius Caesar, the ambitious and prideful dictator of Rome, has returned home from a victorious battle against his fellow Triumvirate, Pompey. As he celebrates and relishes his absolute power, little does he suspect the growing opposition of conspirators, some of whom he would never expect. This read is certainly worthwhile if one has a good taste for tragedy and does not mind a challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great edition of a great play
I really enjoyed reading this edition of the play. Each scene is proceded by a summary of the secene and followed by commentary on the scene, and there are notes alongside the text explaining unusual words/phrases. As an actor, I have been reading Shakespeare for quite awhile, and I still found this book very helpful. If you are new to reading Shakespeare, I particularly recommend this because you will find it very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Shakespeare Classic
Shakespeare wrote Julius Caesar in about 1599. The play was the first of three Roman plays. Shakespeare based the source material for the play on a translation of a work by the Greek philosopher and biographer Plutarch, called "The lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans". Shakespeare, like Plutarch, praises and criticises the actions of the main characters in the assassination of Julius Caesar. However, the historical events in the play are fairly accurate, although the playwright sometimes changed the sequence and timing of events and added his limitless imagination to produce a timeless play that has been enacted and enjoyed by millions of people worldwide over the centuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drawing helps writing practice more fun
These books are great. They have many thematic ties to our curriculum.I made them into centers by copying the book and gluing them to a colorful folder and laminating it.I put those in the writing center whenever we were focusing on a certain theme.A great resource for 1-3.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improves handwriting and basic drawing skills!A++++
This is a wonderful set of books. We are using it as a handwriting practice program (for 1st & 2nd grade) rather than a drawing program, but I'm sure it has applications both ways.

I am a teacher-librarian and I can't keep these drawing books on the shelves! I am always looking for drawing books and these are perfect for the primary and early elementary age group. The simple instructions and diagrams help the children to produce realistic drawings which are the starting point for a host of creative projects! I've noticed that the children are becoming more confident in their ability to draw and they are developing a LOVE of drawing. Tell me where to get more books like these! ... Read more

I am using this book this fall with my preschoolers. After reading the book we will go for a nature walk and then will us the leaves and such found to make their own creatures, which we will turn into placemats to use at snack time. This is a great book and their are so many ways you can use this in the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent combination of art and science.
I am a teacher who has used Look What I Did With a Leaf during my science study of trees. The children collected leaves from the school campus, sorted them, and talked about their purpose as a part of the tree.Thechildren then used their leaves to create leaf creatures which they used tomake leaf print t-shirts.This book was a hit with the children andcertainly served us well by getting their creative juices flowing.

Imagine yourself in 13th-century England. King Edward I has just named the fictitious Kevin le Strange to be the Lord of Aberwyvern--"a rich but rebellious area of Northwest Wales." Lord Kevin's first task is to oversee the construction of a strategically placed castle and town in order to assure that England can "dominate the Welsh once and for all." And a story is born! 'Castle' gives a remarkable look a the creation of a medieval castle. The specifics of date, place, and people are all fiction, but the details of planning and construction are facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teen horse lovers will love this!
I just received this book and started on it right away.I thought this would take forever to do but with a little practice I was doing great. I highly suggest this book for advanced artists and the age of 9 and up.This book offers a variety or horses to draw including close-up pictures. If you know your circles and lines you could do this! Also, you only do good if you start out by reading the instructions in the front of the book. You'll want hints.I did good so you will too!

2-0 out of 5 stars I doubt a 4-year-old would be able to read this.
This is probably a good paper airplane book, but I'm assuming that the reviewers here who have small children are largely reading the book themselves and then showing their kids how to do it, or even just making the planes for the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, DO-ABLE instruction
Ok. When you're studying an art, like acting, it is sometimes frustrating to hear people talk about "craft" and "technique" without getting really specific about what you must actually DO to achieve such things and develop as an artist. People often talk about art as if it is some vague, nebulous, magical thing. And, I guess, it benefits them to talk about it that way. Because then, everyone respects them immensely for being able to do such a thing, and (like a magician) they don't reveal any of their secrets.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool for All Actors
This book is great. Most theatre classes and books have you go through lots of exercises without ever telling you the point. Here the book outlines exercises and their purpose.Plus it is a relatively short read so you can come back to it over and over. This is great for both students of the stage and theatrical teachers. ... Editorial Review

When children catch their first glimpse of a pyramid, a sea of questions inevitably tumbles forth. "Why are they shaped like that?" "How were they made?" "Who made them?" "What were they used for?" Perplexed adults can sigh with relief now that David Macaulay has found a way to thoroughly answer all those deserving questions. His exquisitely crosshatched pen-and-ink illustrations frame the engaging fictional story of an ancient pharaoh who commissions a pyramid to be built for him. With great patience and respect for minute detail (not unlike the creators of the early pyramids), Macaulay explains the sometimes backbreaking tasks of planning, hauling, chiseling, digging, and hoisting that went into the construction of this awe-inspiring monument. Just when the narrative teeters on the edge of textbook doldrums, Macaulay brings us back to the engaging human drama of death and superstition. This respectful blending of architecture, history, and mysticism will certainly satiate pyramid-passionate children as well as their obliging parents. ALA Notable Book. (Ages 9 and older) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A captivating book on a popular subject with children
With exquisitely detailed black-line drawings, this book shows how the pyramids in Egypt may have been constructed. A two-page introduction gives some background of life in Egypt, including an overview of Egyptian spiritual beliefs and practices, especially those related to death and dying. The introduction makes clear that this book is based on an imaginary pharaoh and an imaginary pyramid and that there are differences of opinion about the construction process the Egyptians used.
4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction
Though this was written nearly thirty years ago, this is stillone of the best introductions to the building of the pyramids out there, as he distills the basics down to the bare minimum without sacrificing much detail. The drawings, too, are superb, though the one page showing the various bald-headed workers made me think of Blue Man Group.5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT, FUN READ
My friend checked this book out from the library and lent it to me, and I really enjoyed it. Communicating through words and drawings, Mr. Macaulay makes us feel like we're there in Egypt watching the pyramids being built through the decades. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a book they can really sink their teeth into. ... Read more

Young filmmakers will relish the opportunity to turn their dreams into reality - the reality of a finished short film - using the tips and insights of FILMMAKING FOR TEENS: PULLING OFF YOUR SHORTS. 4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good replacement for "I Spy" books
There are 19 paintings from the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that list things to look for in the painting. This is a neat way to incorporate art with your child while playing. My kids love the "I Spy" books and this is no different. There is a wide range of artwork from ancient Egyptian up to modern day. I only wish the book were longer with more paintings included. ...
