Editorial Review

Jewel and Gem Goop. Make-it-Yourself Stickers. Tornado in a Bottle. Funny Putty. Fruity Lip Gloss. Magic Muck. Snow Globe. Scratch& Sniff Watercolors. Believe it or not, it's possible--easy, infact!--to make every one of these "wacky, wild, and crazy concoctions" (and 57 more) using common household ingredients. John E. Thomas and Danita Pagel have pulled together the cream of the crop of potions, clays, and all-around weird swills for the pleasure of children and scientists of all ages. Why not introduce the very youngest artist of the house tothe world of art with Puddin' Paint? Is there a geologist in the house?Make an Instant Volcano--begins with a fizz, then erupts in a bubblingflow of lava. Time for a bath? Try Bathtub Finger Paints--bathers andthe tub will get clean at the same time! These truly amazingconcoctions are not mess-free, but they guarantee hours of absorbed, lively, creative fun, and inspiration for a lifetime of imaginativeendeavors. Brief scientific explanations would have been a welcomeaddition, but maybe young readers will be motivated to explore thechemical, physical, and geological origins of these experiments ontheir own. Adult supervision is recommended for all projects. (Ages 5and older) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kids Concoctions I
I have been looking for this book for a while now.Very happy with it.Lots of new ideas. Some repeats, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book!
Good book! But we need to add a little less glue for the Funny Putty, and we didn't make Kookie Creepies right. We made the Instant Watercolors and they worked great. I think Gooey Gunk would work too. It'sjust like the concoction "oobleck" only with a different name.

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked, not as planned, but worked
I bought this CD for my 9 year old nephew and I have to be honest that he hated it.BUT it still worked, I told him to learn them and we'd quit listening to the CD and he learned at lightening speed just to get away from it.The tunes can be a little folksy but I thought it was a good way to learn and it does stick in your head.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST one!
I bought several Multiplication CD's and this was absolutely the best one.It includes skip counting which really has helped my daughter learn her multiplication facts.Buy this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids!
My child has a processing disorder which make math extremely difficult. She has always been able to learn song lyrics easily, and this CD was no exception.Kids in 2nd grade can get a great start to 3rd grade math by learning to count by multiples of numbers 2 through 12.I would definitely recommend to all kids, especially those who like music, but not learning basic multiplication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously helpful as teaching tool, besides being fun!
This piece of music by Britten has always been, for me at least, the finest teaching tool in the world of classical music. Even for teaching oneself about the instruments of the orchestra (and especially using the CD alongside) it is just unbeatable. A superb and very easy piece of music to listen to, it is also ingenious, easy to follow and quite memorable to boot. The main theme is great and all the little solos show off the seperate instruments beautifully. You simply cannot get better than this anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality, Educational and Fun Entertainment
Money well spent! Good quality music on the enclosed CD, nice explanations and illustrations in the book. This book will introduce you / your children to the instruments and history of orchestra music in an entertaining fashion.

Editorial Review

When it comes time to tell the class what she did on her vacation,Olivia isn't at all nervous. In fact, she remembers it quite clearly--she wentto the circus, you see. "But when we got there, all the circus people were outsick with ear infections." What are the odds? But the show must go on!Fortunately, Olivia jumps right in to help out--riding elephants, posing as theTattooed Lady (she draws on the pictures with a marker), taming lions, walkingtightropes, juggling, clowning around, and more. In a marvelous fold-out,four-panel spread, our porcine heroine even reigns supreme as the Queen of theTrampoline. "And that's how I saved the circus. And now I am famous." Olivialooks proud. Her teacher looks mad. Ian Falconer shines in this dryly hilarioussequel to his 2001 Caldecott Honor Book Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars circuses are no fun for animals
If people knew what the animals had to go through in order to perform those tricks, compassionate people would not support the circus.Animals are beaten and prodded and suffer terribly during training.Circuses are an unnatural arena for wild animals who belong in their natural habitats. I do not support indoctrinating children into thinking that animal circuses are fun or legitimate forms of entertainment.Circuses are not even educational for children. With so many animal-free circuses, make the compassionate choice and do not support any animal circuses.

4-0 out of 5 stars More fun from our favorite little pig
See my review for Olivia, the same great qualities (and occasional detractions) are continued. This time around Olivia's adventure is in her head but it hardly matters. We also get to meet her new baby brother along the way. Of note. my daughter initially was scared of Olivia's mother's shadow which comes across as very intimidating. She is now over that but it may scare little ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars I L. O. V. E. IT!
Olivia is awesome and one expects the sequels to "classics" to be as good or better than the first, this one is!!!I LOVE IT and you will too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Skill Builder
I recommend this book for anyone who would like to help their child develop pencil skills.Do not worry if your child does not immediately excel with this book, just remember all children develop differently and reach the point where they can follow instructions and do workbook skills at different times.Hold off for a while if needed and re-introduce once in a while until the child is ready.Once the child is ready - you will be surprised how interested in the book they become and how quickly their skills improve.I advise following the workbook instructions that you not let the child do more than 2 pages per session because if they are left wanted to do more they will eagerly come back to it the next time.
5-0 out of 5 stars the perfect intro to pre-writing
Great book, I bought it for my son at 2 1/2 and he Loved it.It really helped him learn to hold a pencil and develop his motor skills, most importantly it kept him enthused about it.Great quality book, thick pages nice pictures to keep little ones interested.I'd let him do 2 or 3 pages, but if it was up to him he'd do the whole book at one time.I just hope I can keep his enthusiasm for learning at this level: ) He's now graduated to uppercase letters, I can see that 'my first book of tracing' helped him with his letters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful quality - builds a great foundation
I looked at many workbooks in the book store before settling on this one, and I'm glad I did!It starts out with basics - connecting pictures and drawing straight lines horizontally and vertically - using very cute, clear graphics. It then progresses to diagonal lines, curved lines, zig zags, more complex curves, lines that cross over each other, etc.In this way, it gradually builds writing skills in a way that is fun for children.I also love that the paper is thick and high quality, the colors are vibrant, and the accompanying pictures are detailed and well-done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous in the best possible way
This book is dangerous in the best possible way, and my 23 mo daughter latched on immediately.By 'dangerous', I mean celebrating rebellion, and if you have a problem with that, knock off a star. There are so many dimensions to the book, I easily understand why it it so compelling. The use of color, and lack thereof, is well done. The colors, shapes, and images invite discussion. The storyline, top to bottom (both figuratively and literally), is logical, with a delayed-gratification (page turn required) rhyming scheme.Highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
My daughter and I both love the book. The rhyming words help her to remember the next body part and she just thinks it is hilarious!

5-0 out of 5 stars Could you get any funnier?!
This is one of the funniest books ever! The tune makes it fun to read over and over. You gotta love David Catrow's illustrations. (huge fan of Catrow) My kids, 3 & 6 just giggle everytime we open it up.The ending is precious. This book is a must have for any kid's library.Fabulous gift!!I even make my friends read it.Too Fun and Funny!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle ofyour Child's Birth will Stir Your World
I know that some reviewers feel that this book is exaggerated, unrealistic and that it gives a false perception to children that they are more special than they actually are, but you know what? I don't care. I read the good and bad reviews before ordering it and decided to go ahead anyway. I'm glad I did! The coming of my child may not have stirred anyone else's world but it sure stirred my husband's and mine. When I looked into his beautiful little eyes mine couldn't stop running, and when his little face touched my cheek my heart skipped a beat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, true and spiritual
On the day you were born, the universe rose up to greet you. Share the awe and wonder of life with your precious one. A simple expression of profound truth. A beautiful birthday gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
I have given this book to many new parents, and with all due respect to the reviewer below, not one has observed that it wasn't realistic. This book is poetry, not geography, not climatology, not anthropology.POETRY...And what's wrong with the idea of a super-happy planet rejoicing at the birth of every new baby? That's how it should be.I applaud the author for dreaming big. This gift will be well received.Don't hesitate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Disney Fans Must Have
This is a must have for the Disney fan. This book gives in depth detail into the man who created the "happiest place on earth", from the people who knew hime best. His family, friends, and employees.I have read many books on Disney, and this ranks in the top 2(along with Imaganineering). It tells the stories of his triumphs as well as his tragedies.I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars NIce story about a true genius
This book is not a complete and detailed biography, but is a nice tribute to Walt Disney. It has a lot of photos, and the most interesting parts of the book are "personal side" sections.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed though!!
The book is not bad, but not really as good as I expected. After having read the extraordinary book "The illussion of life", I wanted more from the same drawer. I picked the villains book.5-0 out of 5 stars Johnston and Thomas Together Again!
Anything by these two wonderful authors and amazing animators should be a must in anyone's collection. Yet, I am baffled that all of their books are currently out of print. I am sure one will not have trouble looking at a used bookstore for a copy of this. This book dealsprecisely with what the title says: The Disney Villians. In their usualclassic and lucid style, the authors discuss the troubles they ran whiledevising a villian. One that is wicked, yet appealing to the audience.Going through their catalog of movies from Snow White to Aladdin, theydiscuss in detail what a villian is all about, and how the villian relatesto the story, style and main character of each film. Whether one should bemore realistic, or have harder edges, or what kind of mannerisms will thisvillian have. Highly reccomended for the animator and artist, as well asthe Disney book lover as these are presented so well. For the enthuseist, which I also own, there is also a more expensive version of this book, hardcover with a slipcase, signed by each of the authors and a print of thefilmstrip from Snow White.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb art activity book about the Impressionists for kids
The invention of photograph had a profound impact on painting. At the start of the 19th-century the goal of painting was realism, but with a camera that became a moot point.Eventually the art world decided the only rational thing to do was to go in the opposite direction and to find an alternative to reality. The Impressionists represent the first successful movement by paintings to capture the public imagination with "non-realistic" art."Monet and the Impressionists for Kids" not only introduces young readers to Impressionism but also follows up with 21 activities that will allow them to try their hand at painting. These activities are what makes Carol Sabbeth's book stand out from others on the Impressionists in general and Claude Monet in particular, because it is pretty much impossible to be exposed to these paintings and not want to try to do it yourself.5-0 out of 5 stars monet and the impressionists for kids
This is a wonderful book with great ideas to do with kids so that they can get an understanding of the arts through hands on experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars As entertaining as it is educational.
Monet And The Impressionists For Kids is a book filled with 21 fun and educational activities to teach young people more about the classical painter Claude Monet and others in the grand and beautiful tradition of Impressionist art. Gorgeously illustrated in full color, Monet And The Impressionists For Kids features such activities as using colored construction paper to paint reflections, or painting the shimmering sky with watercolors. A wonderful biography and history, as well as a highly educational rainy-day fun book, Monet And The Impressionists For Kids is as entertaining as it is educational and highly recommended for home schooling and classroom curriculum supplementation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An art educators delight.
Learning Through Art is a wonderful teacher tool to expose students to art and artists through fun filled reading, writing, and observational activities. Many students have never visited or explored a museum. Learning Through Art gives students a feeling they have been able to visit a museum to discover and learn about art, art history, and art of many cultures. I share this book with students at the beginning of every school year and they love the activities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace
This is a great story with a great message. It tells children there are no limits to what they can be.It tells children not to be deterred by sterotypes or opinions. You can be anything you set your mind to.I bought copies for both my son and my niece.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a teaching tool!!!
Do you need a book that confronts racism, appreciates theater, and shatters stereotypes on a primary level? If so, Amazing Grace, by Mary Hoffman, is the book for you.Not only does this book cover the above topics, but is also highlights on key items for younger readers, such as reading about individual achievements and moral dilemmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and fun
This is a fun gift for a young Harry Potter or Wizardology fan. My 7 year old is enjoying the book immensely. Some parents might be worried about a "pagan" plaything like a wand, but most kids will simply have fun with the kit and learn a little something along the way. Although the "information" in the book is fictional, this is quite an erudite book, and parents who want their children to know something of world history may find this book a great starting point. I particularly enjoyed the reference to the "High Council of Aratta", and gave my son a lecture on Aratta in Sumerian literature, which he listened to with more patience that usual....
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun pagan primer for children
I looked through this book at my daughter's school book fair and decided in no time that it was definitely a keeper. The book is in the "tradition" of the -Ology books (Wizardology, Dragonology, etc.) with its paper foldouts, inset artifacts, and lavish illustrations. What I like most about it is that it approaches the topic of personal connectedness to the Earth. The section "Harnessing the Energy of Nature" provides a wonderful foldout of the constellations, discusses the phases of the moon and animal totems, and details the properties of certain crystals. Because I am trying to incorporate more pagan elements into my family traditions, I thought this was a great way to reinforce some of these things with my 8yo daughter. Something on her level, that appeals to her sense of fun and imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight for Seamstress
I had been searching through all of the sewing books I could find to learn more about the nature of fabric and fibers...and everything I could possibly want to know was here, and more. Absolutely fascinating. It is a textbook, but was written clearly enough that anyone with an interest in the area can easily understand it. I've been teaching classes to costumers and members of the local American Sewing Guild, who are equally impressed with the knowledge we got from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Connecting Textiles and Science
I use this book as the text for teaching a basic textiles course for sophmores. This text provides a sound foundation for students understanding the textiles and the science foundations that are the base for predicting textile performance.Every line is packed with information; there is no fluff in this book.If you want to understand WHY textiles and textile products perform in specific ways, this is the book to buy. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, Not DePaola's Best
Tomie dePaola states in the liner notes that Oliver's story is partly autobiographical. "I could spend hours drawing, and nobody ever asked me to play on their ball teams because I was so bad at it."
2-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning, but fizzles out
I bought this book because Oliver Button is very much like I was at his age.He is more interested in playing with girls and doing activities that are not usually done by boys.I also thought it would be a good way to teach children that they don't have to conform to gender roles. However, having worked with elementary school children in various settings for years, I found the story to be very unrealistic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oliver Button is a Sissy by Will Herman
I really enjoyed this book.It is about a little boy named Oliver Button. This little boy doesn't really care what other people think, he likes to do what he thinks is fun, and that is it.He doesn't do normal things like other boys, he dances, and jumps rope for exercise. He got a new pair of tap shoes and the older boys teased him and called him a sissy and wrote it on the wall.Oliver still kept going to dance school and practicing and practicing.
