5-0 out of 5 stars Barn Dance!
As an avid square dancer this delightful book captures the joy and thrill of an evening of dancing. I have shared it with my two granddaughters, ages 7 and 4. Although they question why we might dance with the cows and chickens, as shown in the wonderful illustrations, they have a better understanding of what we do at a square dance. My husband is a caller and finds the scarecrow a charming immitation of the same role. A must read for dancers of all ages!

3-0 out of 5 stars A creative book for kids
The book "Barn Dance" by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault is a cute book for kids.It lets them know that all things arent scary.Like scarecrows, for instance, arent scary their just to keep the crows away. Also if you child was scared of animals, this book might teach them there is nothing to be afraid of.It also is a very catchy book with all the rhymes and pictures.I was very pleased with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars As much fun to read aloud as it is to hear
Scarecrows aren't really scary unless you're a crow -- or a preschooler. My son was terrified of scarecrows until we found this book. Now, it's tornand tattered, and a favorite of both my boys and their older sister. It'sthe story of what goes on in the barn when (almost) everyone in thefarmhouse is sleeping.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for children
the book is not for professional puppet makers.
5-0 out of 5 stars greatideas
lots of different puppet ideas. They are not too difficult, great to make with kids.

2-0 out of 5 stars Arts And Crafts Time!
Although well put together, this book is very much on an elementary school level. It would be great for teachers but not if you are interested in designing, making, and performing professional level puppets. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Trip into the creative capacity and vision of an artist through the eyes of innocent wonder
In 1988 I begged my Principal(I was a teacher in the Salinas valley) to purchase a set of this book.I taught in the "middle of nowhere " that now holds a good chunk of my heart. This was the time of teaching through literature sets, wholly in love with language, and inspiring children by creating together envirnments to make meaning and to find "context" for learning. It was a time to motivate lives. Toni Ungs, my then Principal, turned to me and replied, no, that I would be the "only teacher" on site who would use the set. And so it goes in teaching, yet another opportunity denied by those thinking within their prodigious logic systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Monet's Garden
I absolutely LOVED this book when I was younger. So, if you're having doubts about your child liking it, I wouldn't...I had the doll of Linnea and I carried it around with me everywhere...and I also brought the book everywhere I could as well.

Linnea, a young Swedish girl has developed quite a friendship with the elderly Mr. Bloom, her upstairs neighbor.Mr. Bloom is a retired gardener who is the proud owner of a lovely book about the great French artist, Claude Monet. After hours and hours of studying Monet and his life, the pair begin the ultimate adventure: a trip to Paris, and where it all began!Linnea and Mr. Bloom visit the Marmottan museum to observe the many paintings of Monet. They study his artwork and how the genius painted. They learn about other Impressionist artists--many who were great friends of Monet.Eventually the young child and elderly gentleman make the ultimate trek to Giverny, where Monet lived and painted.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fond memories from 2nd grade
After recess every day we would be given a page from the Anti Coloring book and allowed to draw to our hearts content for half an hour. It was one of my favorite times of the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up, most definitely!!
As a parent and former early childhood educator, I am pleased to write this review. In a day and age when entertainment does not require much thought process from our young ones (i.e. video games, pointless television shows, computer software, etc.), it is very refreshing to stumble upon the Anti-Coloring Book. Our children are exposed to endless amounts of effort-free fun stuff; and ultimately, young minds become lazy, trained, and forgetful of the power of imagination. How can you say no to a product that fosters developmentally appropriate learning, and promotes self awareness, self confidence, self expression, and independent thinking?? Help your child to break free from the lines and boundaries that hold them back.Kudos to the creators... it's time to get real about our children's needs!

5-0 out of 5 stars I grew up with Anti-Coloring Books
I still remember some of the specific pages I created in my Anti-Coloring Books almost 20 years ago! I had 4 or 5 different books and loved them all. These books encourage creativity, empowering kids to draw and think "outside the lines." I look forward to giving these books to my nieces, nephews, and children in the near future and are thrilled to learn that they're still available. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for the coffee table
The absolutely tremendous illustrations make this book interesting to all ages...especially adults. We keep it on the coffee table and company of all ages pick it up to get swept away by the imaginative book.

4-0 out of 5 stars More powerful than tv
This book has a gravity to it that is greater than the black hole of time and attention that is tv. My kids loved it and would sit and imagine themselves in the pictures (okay, so did I) as we traversed the lines blurred by Rob Gonsalves between real and surreal. The prose was nice but it is the paintings that make this such a delight. The only downside is the length; 33 pages, 16 paintings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings back old memories
I had this book as a child, and remembered drawing all the animals over and over again using the step by step provided by Ed.I had loved this book so much that I just bought it for my son who is 5.He has been complaining that he can't draw as well as his dad (thanks to Ed E.) and this will give him the edge up on old dad.I have told him about this book, and he has been asking about it over and over. Can't wait till he starts to outdraw his dad!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to drawing
My kids (ages 7 and 5) have loved this book. They have learned to follow the linear instructions and are so impressed with their ability to create. We also purchased Ed Emberly's "Make a World".Both are great for young learners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for beginner artist
I bought this one years ago for my older son when he was 3. Now it is my younger son (4 years now)'s favorite book. He can just sit by the table and draw with this book for hours. The book is a very good teaching guide. It teaches you to draw animals with simple instructions--so simple that a 4 years old can draw a owl just by following this book. I am going to buy another one for my friend since she was amazed how well my sons can draw. Amazon should stock more these kind of books which are great and cheap so customers do not even bother to search for bargins else where. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SW Cross-sections Eps. IV-VI
A fun look inside the beloved spacecraft of the Classic Trilogy of Star Wars movies, the book delves into the histories, relationships between, and (pseudo)science behind such iconic vehicles as the Millennium Falcon, the Imperial Star Destroyer, TIE fighters, X-Wings, the Death Star, Slave 1, and so on. A book of incredibly detailed cutaways and well-considered textual notes, this collection nonetheless feels a little thin and less detailed than the companion volumes created for the Episodes I-III, which possess a more premeditated backstory and are rendered in almost exasperating detail. In fact, the volumes for the Classic Trilogy and those for Episodes I-III could be said to warrant criticisms similar to the movies themselves -- the original films/volume feature a whiz-bang melodrama with exciting places and artifacts that allude to an unseen galactic history thousands of years deep, while the new episodes/volumes display the baroque details of thousands of years of galactic history and politics without the unifying resonance of a compelling drama to bring them fully to life. However, I would recommend all the volumes for children of all ages who like to dream and marvel over how things work, or might work, on Earth or in a galaxy far, far away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good book!
I love this book. I always wanted to see twhat the inside of an At-At looked like, and it shows you. This book tells you about different starships and shows you the inside of the Y-wing. It points to where the weapons, communications and fuel parts are. The thing that I really liked about this book was the cross-sections of the sandcrawler. It shows you what the inside of a sandcrawler looks like and points to where the Jawa's sleep and work. The two things I diidn't like about this book was that when it shows you the inside of a star destroyer, it only shows you like the fuel and power generator things. It doesn't show you where the people are really. The other thing I didn't like was that the book was way to short, they could have showed the A-Wing and stuff like that. I enjoyed the snowspeeder in this book and the cross-sections of the X-wing because it showed you where the controls and pedals were. I would definately reccomend this book. If you were ever wondering what the inside of the Slave 1 or the inside of Jabba's sail barge looked like, this book shows it all. THere are two illustrators in this book, but their drawings look the same. GOOD BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars A dream for a vehicle lover!
I always wanted to see more and to be able to look inside of the vehicles more closely, and this book provides that information (and more more) in great detail.I really like the mini illustrations of where in the vehicles that events from the movies took place, it helps to "put a name to a face". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New to Reggio Emilia approach - loved this book
I am not a teacher and I was not experienced in the Reggio Emilia approach to preschool education (project approach) before reading this book. I sought this book for handwork ideas with the items my girls collect on their nature walks. I could not put this book down!5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for caring teachers of young children!
This book is a great way to ease yourself into Reggio or to inspire others on your team. You do not have to be "Reggio inspired" to know that young children love small, collectable items. They find such wonderful treasures, but classrooms are not often set up to make good use of this "Beautiful Stuff". This book has great photos and easy to read text showing readers the process that children and staff went through in developing this long term project.I particularly enjoyed the summaries at the end of each chapter on what the adults learned during the process. My only complaint would be that I wanted MORE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Stuff! Learning with found materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, realistic art projects for toddlers and preschoolers
I have a three-year old daughter with whom I wanted to explore arts and crafts. I looked at many different arts and crafts books before choosing this one to buy. Many other books that I looked at had projects that had complicated instructions or used materials that were expensive. I needed a book that I could pull off the bookshelf, open up, and pick a suitable art project quickly. Little Hands has realistic projects- by that, I mean projects that are meaningful, uncomplicated, and use basic materials that you're likely to have around the house.

Editorial Review

On one of their weekly balloon flights over Celesteville, Babar and Celeste notice that the railroad station is standing empty. Elephants, it seems, now prefer cars over trains. Interestingly, although Babar comments on the roads "jammed with traffic," he and his queen decide to focus on the other issue--the abandoned station. Celeste comes up with an idea to turn it into a museum to house their art collection, and soon an architect is drawing up plans and workers are renovating the building. When the great day of the opening arrives, what a show! The royal couple had acquired some pretty impressive and well known works of art--all featuring elephants, of course. Laurent de Brunhoff outdoes himself with the real-life art-inspired paintings and sculptures, from Mary Cassatt’s"Mother and Child" to Edvard Munch’s "The Scream" to Leonardo da Vinci’s "Mona Lisa." Young art buffs will enjoy the very age-appropriate art appreciation lessons, as the children are encouraged!to say whatever they want about the art: "I like this picture because it’s red," says Arthur about Van Gogh’s "Self-Portrait." When pedantic Cornelius tries to pontificate, Celeste gently hushes him. Includes a free pull-out poster. (Ages 4 to 7) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Deception and Treachery
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was a dramatist whose genius is universally acknowledged, with a reputation as an actor, playwright and poet. He lived in an age of vast and significant changes characterised by the rise of the middle class and of a centralised government and the disappearance of medieval religious beliefs. England was transforming into a modern state. This was a time when self-realisation, self-respect and boldness of thought and action was idealised. Shakespeare's drama merely reflected the dramatic times of the age.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yale's may be the best edition of Macbeth
Virtually all editions of Macbeth will have at least some annotations. Rummaging through five different editions, I preferred the Yale University Press version, edited by Burton Raffel, as having the most comprehensive and comprehensible notes, as well as an excellent introduction to Shakespeare's play. Raffel not only explains the meanings of obscure words, but also gives brief notes pertaining to relevant history, geography, stage directions, etc, that are rarely addressed as fully by other editors. In addition, Raffel frequently gives the proper way to stress the syllables in a line when reading it aloud, which can be extremely helpful. (However, in most places these stresses need to be very subtle, so that you don't sound like "taDUM taDUM taDUM".) And Yale's page layout is among the clearest that I've seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare's Darkest Play
In a sense, Shakespeare treaded on Gothic elements in his play Macbeth, which premiered after Queen Elizabeth had died and King James, who had heritage in Scotland, became the new King of England. James knew about his infamous ancestor Macbeth and commissioned the Bard to write a thrilling work of theatre which recounted the historic tale of Macbeth. There really was a Macbeth, but much of the story is fictional, save for the names of people and places. Macbeth is Shakespeare's darkest tragedy. On the New Folgers Library Edition, we are treated to the very best of scholarly information regarding the creation of the play, and the political and theatrical world of Shakespeare's day. This is the best printed version of Macbeth you will find today. And for this reader, it is a play perfect for this Halloween season. The plot, without giving much of it away in a summary, is quite simple but powerful in its impact. In Medieval England, the minor nobleman Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth plot to murder the current king of Scotland. Their ambitions are spurred when three mysterious witches foretell their success. However, as Macbeth maintains power, he becomes fearful of losing it. He orders the deaths of allies and friends out of insecurity. Eventually his own ambition becomes his downfall and a new king arises. Since its premiere, Macbeth has been rumored to be "cursed". Throughout the years, including the twentieth century, reports of accidents and even deaths have circulated involving certain productions of Macbeth. The elements in the play are dark and quintessentially Gothic- flying daggers, constant darkness and fog, ghosts, witches, apparitions including dead kings and bloody children. In the 19th century this would encompass the material of Gothic literature but in Shakespeare's time it was part of thrilling drama. Supernatural beings like ghosts were featured in other Shakespeare tragedies -Hamlet and Julius Caesar for instance. The belief in witches was prevalent in Puritan/Protestant/Catholic England, after all this was still the time of the Inquisition. So the featured Three Witches would have actually been regarded as a true part of history even. This play has many fine moments. All of Macbeth's quotes are memorable but especially his "Out, Out Brief Candle! Life is but a walking shadow..." The role of Lady Macbeth, if played well, can be the signature role of many actresses. She is Shakespeare's most evil creations. She drives Macbeth to murder because she is perhaps even more ambitious than him. Her being a female is her only setback. But she is an empowered and vile woman, even regarded as something of a witch herself. The play inspired several film versions including director Roman Polanski's version in 1971 and in the 19th century an opera by Verdi.

5-0 out of 5 stars my 2 year old's favorite
We bought many children's song for my son, and this is his favorite. He loves to buzzz when he hears the bee comes, and claps his hand when he hears "clap you your hand as slowly as you can ...". He didn't talk too much before, but this tape really makes him much more vocal then before. The music is so soothing and he listens to it every day before he goes to bed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent cutting book for beginners
My son is three years old and is always asking me to use my scissors to cut things which I did not allow. This book was a lifesaver for me.My son and I practice cutting one page a day and he is always so excited to do the workbook. Each page in the book gets progressively harder so the children are challenged throughout the book. There are fun pictures that my son loves to cut.I highly recommend this book for someone who needs guidance and a place to start teaching their preschooler how to cut.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!
As a teacher, I can't say enough good things about this book. It teaches cutting skills in a nice sequential manner and the cute designs and bright colors are highly motivating for my 3 year old daughter.I can't wait to buy more Kumon prodcuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have scissors, will cut
Most children are fascinated with scissors and love to use them, yet they really have very little in their lives they can meaninfully cut. So what happens? Mom's magazine gets snipped to ribbons, baby sister or the dog get an amateur barber job, maybe they become a fashion designer: "I think my pants would be better as shorts!" Thankfully Kumon has come to the rescue and has come up with a book for children that they CAN cut, have fun with, and mom won't be upset!

Editorial Review

Most children are captivated by snow, but how many go on to make it theirlifework? This beautiful biography, winner of the 1999 Caldecott Medal, tells the true story of a Vermont farm boy who was mesmerized by snowflakes. Wilson Bentley was fascinated by the six-sided frozen phenomena, and once he acquired a microscope with a camera, his childhood preoccupation took on a more scientific leaning. Bentley spent his life taking countless exquisite photographs (many that are still used in nature photography today), examining the tiny crystals and their delicate, mathematical structures. Jacqueline Briggs Martin tells this tale with simple, graceful prose that will engage children's imaginations. Edifying and snowflake-scattered sidebars offer more information about Bentley's methods and snowflake science. The artwork of Mary Azarian, whose 19th-century hand-press illustrations decorate the charming Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Story
Snowflake Bentley tells the delightful story of Wilson Bentley, a man who spent his entire life photographing snowflakes. He lived in Vermont his whole life, a place where snow is as common as dirt, but yet, he was still able to see its marvelous beauty. Children will love reading this book about a topic everyone finds pleasure in, plus they will be inspired by the life of Snowflake Bentley.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bill Bentley and his somewhat odd profession
This book elegantly portrays the life of a rather eccentric man who spent his entire life studying and photographing snowflakes. The artwork is very complementary to his life's story, which is purposefully written with children in mind as the readers. There is enough information available about his life that an entire unit of study can be developed around the themes of winter and snow.Cross-curricular activities can be expanded to other content areas such as Social Studies and Science.I am a teacher and I use this book in conjunction with William Bentley's book of his actual snowflake photos entitled "Snow Crystals".The students learn a lot about snow and about the man.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a unique and wonderful story
I love finding a children's book with a true story. Kids are bombarded with fiction and silliness all day long (which is wonderful in its own right), but it's such a treat to share a true story with children. Bentley's passion for something so child-friendly as snow inspires great feeling in children and adults alike. The book's detailed woodcut illustrations are beautiful in their own right. Buy this and then go out and buy Bentley's book of Snow Crystals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Party Princess
Oh, how I love this series. So funny. And this time Mia has a whole new problem. Michael is throwing a college party while his parents are away (the parents know about it though) and Mia is worried what Michael will think when he realizes she's not a Party Girl. So she shows up at the party trying to be like someone else, and makes a fool of herself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, smart, and still Mia
I'm well out of my tweens and teens, but The Princess Diaries series is of one of my guilty pleasures (along with John Travolta musicals and Celine Dion).A friend of mine, who's 28 and recently married, lets me borrow her Princess Diaries books when she's finished reading them. But these books aren't fluffy, adolescent, "I wish I was a princess" books. These books are chocked full of social commentary, pop culture references, and humor.I had more than one belly laugh while reading Mia's minute-by-minute replay of her daily grind, painstakingly recorded in her "Princess" diaries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another great Meg Cabot book!
The 7th book in the Princess Diaries series was just as funny and great as all the rest of Meg Cabot's books. I won't give you the play by play of the book, but basically, Mia is once again faced with many different problems. Michael thinks Mia is not much of a party girl, which she isn't, but Mia tries to prove to him she is. Of course, Grandmere is once again all up in Mia's business, this time trying to help her raise money for the senior class graduation after Mia throws the school budget on recycling bins. Also in this book, you finally find out about The-Guy-Who-Hates-It-When-They-Put-Corn-In-The-Chili, who has been barely mentioned in all the other books.
