5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!!!
This is such an adorable board book! It's so sweet and girly. Little girls just love their Grandmas and this is such a great way for them to connect with them even more. Lots of reviews said this book is not very durable. Read the age reccomendation- it says 3! I wouldn't give this to a young toddler unless you look at it together and very gently. Otherwise, it's very suitable for a child 3 and up. I can't wait to give this as a gift to my friend's daughter and everyone else I know who'll appreciate it :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Cute idea but I hate the text!
Very cute idea and my daughter enjoys it but the text gives an image that I wouldn't want my daughter to have.It says:

I bought this for my little nephew, and he really enjoys it.He even reads it to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a work of art!
I had purchased several of Sabuda's books for my grandchildren, the Cookie Countdown is amazing and what a surprise at the end!I have a friend who loves toys and gadgets and other mysterious things who was being given a fairly prestigious award for his work across the country.I got a copy of America the Beautiful as a gift for him because I knew he would love it.Both he and his wife were just amazed. He sat for hours opening and looking at each page.He still tells me he finds something new each time he looks at it.I knew he would love these books as much as I do and as much as my grandchildren do.Sabuda makes little works of art!

These Pop Up Books are incredible, something you would want to collect.I am trying to buy all of Robert Sabuda's books for my grandchildren to enjoy when they come to my house. They are delicate books so they are not ones you would let kids play with everyday, but they are extra special books that you sit down with them and show the creativity and ingenuity that it must of taken to create these works of art.I have 6 of his books so far and hope to gradually collect them all. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great, even for younger kids!
I have the Indigo Dreams CD which I use in my psychotherapy practice with younger children. Many of them really enjoy the stories and have been helped with calming for bedtime. However I was excited to try using the Indigo Teen Dreams with some of my younger kids who really needed to know how to specifically practice the Relaxation techniques in order to apply them to other times of increased stress. I have been working with two bright 8 year old girls that have loved adding this CD to their options when feeling stressed or having difficulty sleeping.THANKS!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Indigo Teen Dreams: Diversity at it's Best
I am a psychiatric social worker who purchased "Indigo Teen Dreams" for our unit. We have utilized this wonderful CD on a twice weekly basis as part of our relaxation curriculum. We have a very diverse population of adolescents ranging from kids who are moderately depressed or highly anxious to severely behaviorally and emotionally disturbed. This CD has reached teens across the board and given them the initial realization that they do have some control over their bodies and how they choose to respond to situations and stressors. I applaud "Indigo Teen Dreams" CD for its usefulness in everyday life in supporting teens with many diverse needs and challenging issues to find a better way to deal with their stressors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indigo Teen Dreams- A Wonderful Relaxer
I'm a very tense person by nature and I get anxious easily, which sometimes disturbs my sleep. Recently, I had a difficult time falling asleep because I was worrying about college and such. I put on Indigo Teen Dreams and almost instantly felt more at ease. The visualizations and images are wonderfully relaxing. The meditation really allowed me to focus in on myself and forget the world around me. And the deep breathing track is something that everyone should do, learning how to deep breathe can make a world of a difference, as I found out. I put the CD on my i-pod and listen to it whenever I need to relax. It's made my overall mood better and I'm happy to have found something that makes me feel better. I do a lot of theatre and once the school year starts up, I plan to use the techniques to focus and relax myself before an audition. These techniques I can carry with me and use forever; I would strongly recommend it to any teen, I think everyone can benefit from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful illustrations
Tom's style is delightful. I especially loved all the sub-jokes throughout. The style is deceptively simple. Yet there is so much going on, you'll want to reread it and see what you missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars My five year old grandson really identified with this book!
Such a well written, beautifully illustrated book. My five year old grandson really identified with the little boy in the book. He too gets grumpy when getting a stuffing hug from his gradma, me! It is quite natural for a five year old boy not to want to be hugged and my grandson was glad to see that the boy in the story felt the same way! I highly recommend this book! I will buy more books by the same author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book for my talking about social cues and situations
This book is great for my son who has a tendancy to take things quite literally and too seriously. In moments of frustration he loses it!He has trouble reading social cues and it's great how this book talks about feelings and situations that we all have.It opens doors to conversations about real situations that irritate him. While he's calm and laughing we can talk about them and he can see the situation and understand his feelings.

This book was purchased for my 9 year old granddaughter. She was totally involved as we browsed the pages. The colorful layout and simple explanations encouraged her to continue reading and learning. The practice patterns for "steering" the sewing machine are an excellent idea. The games maintained her interest and encouraged skill-building.The easy-to-make crafts will keep her busy and make wonderful presents for her friends. As a long time sewer and grandmother of eleven I highly recommend My First Sewing Machine Book!

I started the Shoe books a few years ago. This one was the first one I read and overall the best of the best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite Childhood Book
This was my favorite book growing up; I read it over and over and over again.Whether it was because I was one of three sisters, or because I loved dancing, or simply because of the incredible world Streatfeild created, I don't know.I wanted to have the magical life that Pauline, Petrova, and Posy shared. This is a great read for any young girl, and might even be appreciated by not-so-young girls as well.I'm sure I'll keep rereading it throughout my life.I loved that it got the recognition it deserved in "You've Got Mail."
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and charming story!
I loved this book! It is the story of three orphans, Pauline, Petrova, and Posy, who are adopted by an older man who is gone during most of the book. After going through most of the money that he has left for their care until his return, the three sisters attend a special school of the arts. There they can learn to act, dance, and sing; then they can get jobs in different performances making money. Pauline falls in love with acting, Posy is a natural dancer, and poor Petrova would rather fix cars and learn to fly planes than be on stage. All the characters are wonderful and a joy to read about, the story is unique and charming. I simply didn't want it to end. The sisters are fun characters that children will love to read about. Adults will enjoy this story just as much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good text to suppliment a strong hands-on art program
I used a much older edition of this book in high school (it had a brown cover way back then). This text was good suppliment to the hands-on projects we did in class. It taught about art basics like types of meduim, technique, and touched on artists, famous works, and how to look at art. This is a great text to ensure students develop and hold an interest, love and understanding of art. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Believe it or not, the first known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books--but only for adults. In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children's stories with movable flaps of paper. The rest, as they say, is history. Now aspiring paper mechanics (creative engineer-artists who create dimensional and movable books, otherwise known as pop-ups) can learn the how-tos and wherefores of this marvelous craft. From tip-ons to dummies to glue knock-outs, all the intricacies of pop-up production are outlined and explained.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers lots more than it promises.
This, as the title says, shows a variety of elementary paper popups - the cute little folded thingies in books and cards that stand up when the page is opened. The book's a real strength that it includes an actual, working specimen of each structure it describes. Except for one or two demonstratons, the popup folds never pass the basic, and never show the incredible breadth of artistry that can go into the best of popups. Still, it's readable and gives you an unambiguous idea of how the finished product will look, work, and be assembled. From that point forward, combining ideas, adapting them to your application, and decorating the paper surface are all up to your creative expression.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Pop ups
I was thrilled with the book. It was just what I wanted and will be a great tool for my artwork. The othe Pop Up book I ordered is the perfect complement to this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The strength of this book lies in its website
Elements of Pop Up is one of the few How To Make Pop-Ups books that features patterns for moving parts like wheel/tab mechanisms, which is why I purchased it. However, don't expect to be able to create anything extrememly fancy with this one. The examples are made of simple shapes that expect the user to expand upon them as necessary--this can be a detriment when you're trying to figure out how to alter the pattern to make something more complicated. The most useful part of the book, ironically, isn't even in the book: it's online at www.popupbooks.com, Carter's website. In the Surprise section, one can download all the patterns for making every example shown. Don't pass up buying the book, though. You'll most likely need Elements of Pop Up at your side to figure out how to assemble all your cut out pieces correctly. If you'd rather follow instructions and complete specific projects, I'd recommend Carter/Diaz's other book, Let's Make It Pop-Up! (ISBN 0-689-86508-2), which has pre-printed pictures and contains projects like Blooming Flower and Huggy Bear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it Again!
This book takes the reader on a journey through a young girls imagination and provides a unique exposure for young children in art appreciation. The end of each book provides information on the artist, materials used to create the art form and the location of the painting. Both of my daughters, age two and five, really enjoyed reading the collection of Katie's adventures.I would recommend buying the hardcover books for long lasting use, because you will be reading it again and again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Freaks
Another amazing collection of eye candy fashion. I love the full page color photos and the brief descriptions. It is interesting to see how a sub-culture of fashion in itself fractures off into seperate catagories. Like L.O.L.A., european punk, goth, hippie, couture, et cetera. All amazingly creative free spirits. This is a great buy if you like cultures and community, fashion design, or interesting coffee table conversation starters. I love the book "fruits" as well, they are like twins, something to be kept together. I would love to see what changes in style another ten years has brought to Japan. Hopefully I'll run accross that book next. The only irksome bit was the bubblegum text color. It was hard to read at times. And my eyes aren't too bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare on the danger of messing with prophecy
William Shakespeare's tragedy "Macbeth" was performed at the Globe Theater in 1605-06. The "Scottish" play was a calculated to be pleasing to James I, who took the throne of England after the death of Elizabeth Tudor in 1603. It was not simply that the play was set in the homeland of the Stuarts, but also that when Banquo's royal descendants are envisioned the last of them is the new King. (Note: Shakespeare does a similar sort of tribute to Queen Elizabeth when in the final act of "Henry VIII" the the Archbishop prophesizes great things for the infant Elizabeth. However, not only is there doubt that Shakespeare was the sole author of that particular history, it was not produced until 1612-13, ten years after Elizabeth's death.)

When fall comes, so do the books. It is approximated that almost 2,000 children's books will be printed this fall.Of this mass number, perhaps ahandful--a very small handful-- are actually worth reading to a young childnight after night.Bijou Le Tord's A Blue Butterfly: A Story about ClaudeMonet, is part of this handful.5-0 out of 5 stars Monet appreciation for children!
I have always been bedazzled by Monet's painting and his home, Giverny. This book is another wonderful way to share Monet's gifts with youngchildren. As a first-grade teacher, I appreciate the ideas suggested by theteacher below who shared her method for offering Monet toyoung children. An exceptional treasure to enjoy over and over again!

My 5 yr old daughter and I picked this up at the library and what a find! This is a book of delightful watercolor illustrations of Monet out in the field, in a garden, by the sea.The pictures are so pleasant and veryreminiscent of Monet's work, and the few lines that accompany the drawingsare perfect for young children. I heartily recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book every PARENT should read
The message of this book for parents is that it's ok if your child doesn't do it, whatever it may be (reading, playing baseball, painting) exactly right the first time - give your children a chance to explore and practice before judging if they have talent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reynolds does it again!
The Dot almost brought a tear to my eye...Ish did!I couldn't wait to share this story with my students!A great book to introduce self-esteem and character development!

5-0 out of 5 stars "believe in what you see"
When my daughter read this she told me "It's a great book.It teaches you to believe in what you see." So, of course, I had to read it and I see now what she means. It's a lovely way to introduce children to the idea of abstract things (art and otherwise), although it seems children get the idea more easily than adults, they just don't have a word for it.And now they do: "ish". ... Editorial Review

"The STRINGS all soar, the REEDS implore, / The BRASSES roar with notes galore. / It's music that we all adore. / It's what we go to concerts for." In this exuberant tribute to classical music and the passionate, eccentric musicians who play it, author Lloyd Moss begins with the mournful moan and silken tone of one trombone. A trumpet sings and stings along, forming a duo, then a fine French horn joins in, "TWO, now THREE-O, what a TRIO!" The mellow cello ups it to a quartet, then ZIN! ZIN! ZIN! a violin soars high and moves in to make a quintet. The flute that "sends our soul a-shiver" makes a sextet, and "with steely keys that softly click," a sleek, black, woody clarinet slips the group into a septet. We move on! A chamber group of ten!And the orchestra is ready to begin. Moss should be congratulated for creating a playful, musical stream of rhyming couplets that seamlessly, slyly teaches the names of myriad musical groups. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction
I'll admit, I was not crazy about this one at first but my child loved it from the beginning. This is a great way to expose your kids to music and a number of different instruments beyond drums, guitar and piano. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!
My 2 and a half year old son absolutely adores this book, and we enjoy reading it to him (over and over and over...)Lovely illustrations, exquisite poetry, light-hearted and yet educational on so many levels... a pure delight!

5-0 out of 5 stars Encore! Encore! Give us more!
Music and counting go hand in hand and this book does a great job of entertaining the reader while teaching. You will learn about several musical instruments and the names of musical groupings from solo to orchestra. The illustrations are gorgeous. This is a fun and refreshing book. As a parent and avid reader, I never tire of reading this one. This is definitely in my top 10 new classic favorites. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High School Musical: The Junior Novel
I LOVE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL SO MUCH I LOVE READING THIS BOOK THE MOVIE IS MY FAVOTIREI CAN'T WAIT TILL HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 COMES OUT IN JANUARY 2007. I HAVE THE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL BOOKBAG,THE CD,THE DVD,THE CALENDAR,& POSTERS

3-0 out of 5 stars another item to fill the addiction
Personally I don't like the movie nor music much, but this is about the kids.I don't mind their love for the movie so the novel is a good addition. They are singing and reading so I can't fault the subject too much. The novel has enough pics to satisfy their addiction. They be HSM experts now, but at least I know they can memorize details.Another plus is that the book isn't very expensive.I don't know how long the fad will last until they jump to something else, but for now the book keeps them happy so that's a big positive.

5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing book
the book is very detailed. it has all the information about the movie. it is like if you were watching the movie when you read the book. it is so amazing how it comes to live. if you love the movie this book will be a wonderful book to read. and if you are a super fan of the movie, this item will be a wonderful addition to your collection. or another collectors must have item. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kids used to do this stuff?!
This is a wonderful look back into the pages of Popular Mechanics Magazine as it was in the early 1900s.It consists of reprints of how-to articles for boys.(Back then, girls just didn't read Popular Mechanics or get their hands dirty building furniture.)
