5-0 out of 5 stars Family Togetherness
Children's Book Press recently published a 15th anniversary edition of Carmen Lomas Garza's Family Pictures. One of the San Francisco-based publisher's most popular titles, the bilingual picture book won a Pura Belpre honor some years ago for its art work.(The Belpre awards are given biannually to Latino writers and illustrators.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Family Pictures
I have read many children's books; this book however, isn't really a book for reading. It's greatest attribute are it's pictures. It does have a small descriptive paragraph opposite each picture in both English and Spanish, therefore making the book accessible to many different children. It is a great multicultural book; you can learn about the culture and traditions of a Mexican American family. It is a good book to develop multiculturalism and can be used in many ways in the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful piece!
Family Pictures is an excellent example of an autobiographical as well as multicultural book written for children from kindergarten through fourth grade.Lomas Garza covers a short period of her own childhood and the social life and customs of Hispanic Americans. The reader's attention is held by the detailed illustrations done in a variety of materials including oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, and gouache on arches paper. While children will be drawn by the wonderful paintings, they will be learning a great deal about the Hispanic culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Spectacular Story!
I really enjoyed this story!!Hart Evans is a very popular sixth grade student at Palmer Intermediate. One afternoon he found himself landed in the principal's office after deciding to launch rubber bands at Mr. Meinert, the chorus director. After some convincing, the principal decided on a light punishment for Hart. This angered Mr. Meinert and therefore led to his decision to turn the Holiday concert planning over to his students. After all, Mr. Meinert had nothing to lose; his position would be terminated after the holiday break due to budget cuts.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Last Holiday Concert
I would recommend this book to boys or girls around the age of 10. This book is very good. I enjoyed reading it. I like the way Andrew Clements writes, and I know all of my friends do too. It may be a little confusing to people younger then 10, but it is a great book and I encourage people to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll like this story!
Mr. Meinert's job was about to end.He was the sixth grade chorus director. Hart Evans, a student, shot a rubber band at Mr. Meinert but he didn't mean to. All he was trying to do is get attention by shooting a rubber band to the ceiling. Hart thought chorus was boring. Mr. Meinert got fed up with bad behavior. He put the kids in charge of the upcoming concert. The concert was going to be a holiday concert. They had an election to see who would be in charge of the concert. The students could pick anybody in the room.Hart Evans was chosen. It was a rough start. There was a big variety of performance ideas to choose from. They had to vote again for what they were going to do for the concert. They finally picked. They did some pretty interesting performances!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Man Who WalkedBetween the Towers
Artwork offers impressive, unusual perspectives which surprise the eye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Fun for All
This true story is well written and fantastically illustrated. It's about the amazing walk of aerealist Phillipe Petite between the two towers of the World Trade Center. When he is on the wire, the perspective showing how high he is, is so well drawn that my stomach flips. This amuses my children to no end. Added to this physical sensation is that it is on a tri-fold page which gives the viewer a real sense of being out there way above lower Manhattan. We've had this book for three years and enjoy it as much today as we did when we first brought it home.

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting spin to bring history into the present
The Man Who Walked Between the Towers is an incredible feat at dealing with a recent crisis and spinning it into a memorable scene of overcoming struggles and following your dreams. The struggle to handle the events of 9/11 is immense, but Gerstein uses a piece of history to bring the Towers to life, not to mention the sheer beauty in the illustrations. This book comes highly recommended. ... Read more

Hi!!The book is wonderful for beginers. It helps you get the basic right.Almost all aspect are covered so that you can start sketching cars on your own like side view,3d view.Gives detail information for drawing tyres. This book has helped me a lot and I would recommend this book to everyone without any hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never knew I could draw
I bought this book for myself as a 37th B-day gift and realized after all those years.... I can draw!!! : ) My wife swears I've taken art before but I haven't. After drawing 2 cars I used the techniques to draw a car out of another book and it looks good. I am my toughest critic and I like what I see. I bought 2 other books which cost more and they don't teach you half as much as what you learn with this book. I wish someone had given me this for my 9th B-day. Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Babies Will Love It!
I bought this CD because I wanted something to help me remember the songs I used to sing some odd 30 years ago as a child for my baby.I have been playing this CD for my son since he was born, and now his face just lights up every time we put it in (He is 11 months now). The book that comes along with it is wonderful. It has great suggestions on how to play with your baby with several songs, the notes let you play along if you have a piano at home, and the songs are great for play groups too.The CD starts with fun play songs, and ends with soft sleeping music.I also love this CD because it is filled with songs I grew up with. The musical arrangements are so pleasant to listen to you can truly listen to it over and over again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
I highly recommend this book for anyone who teaches singing- especially those who work with groups of inexperienced singers.Phillips goes a long way in demystifying singing technique and causes for singing problems as well as providing ideas for remediation in older inexperienced singers. The fact that Phillips approaches singing in a very objective manner makes singing an attainable skill for anyone who is willing to put in the physical work. The exercises in this book are intended for group use and when used consistently they really work! Many people ask me how I get my 4th and 5th grade boys to sing so willingly and I really think a lot of it has to do with the information that I have taken to my music classroom from this book. Some of the exercises may sound a little silly at first, but give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall approach to effective vocal production in youth.
This book explores the history behind American vocal training, describing how different attitudes towards school singing has affected the choral sound as we know it today. The author also effectively presents how singing is a psychomotor process, and one that is not always easily taught or learned. He reviews the vocal parameters of younger and developing voices, and explains the difficulty with the adolescent voice change (especially with boys). He also encourages teachers to express singing as a "sport", one that requires physical involvement of the body! The second half of the book is dedicated to 90 specific exercise methods for teachers to use in developing their choir. He has broken it into three age levels so that teachers anywhere within the grades 1-12 spectrum can use it effectively, or just use it to supplement a program they may already use and like. The exercises develop repiration, phonation, resonance, diction, and expression within choirs.Eighteen wonderful vocal exercises are explained for each of these areas. This would make an excellent reference book for any music teacher who is involved with teaching singing to any age level. The exercises are specific and help coordinate the students' overall approach to singing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Katie Meets the Impressionists
James Mayhew set the bar high with this adventurous and educational story. I cannot think of a better way to encourage children to explore impressionism. Our daughter was just 3.5 when we first fell in love with Katie. We have since purchased the series of Katie books and enjoy sharing them with other children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Art Appreciation
I bought this book along with two others from James Mayhew's collection for my two and five-year-old daughters. We enjoyed learning about the artists, types of paintings and history. After purchasing this book, I ordered another one as a birthday gift for a six-year-old and took the kids to a local museum featuring Impressionism. It is a great book for introducing famous art pieces and familiarizing young children with art history.Katie's adventures allow the children to step inside the paitings and experience various imaginative scenarios.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in exposing young children to art appreciation, which can begin at an early age.

5-0 out of 5 stars a sweet, & educational tour of the masters of impressionism
For her birthday, Katie's grandmother takes her to the museum to see the impressionist paintings. At first, Katie thinks they look like dots, but her grandmother tells her to stand further back to see the flowers and the people. Katie has a rich imagination. She steps back and not only can she see the flowers, she can smell them. She closes her eyes and she finds herself within the painting itself, interacting with Jean Monet, son of Claude Monet, who is one of the subjects in the painting. Read more

I liked the movie.I admit, yes this teen, has a soundtrack of west side story.I found the movie very funny when the guys where singing and dancing but admittedly I cried at the end. This story was very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A logical pairing of 2 great theatrical works
This is two books in one: the text of William Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" and the text of "West Side Story," the 20th century musical with a book by Arthur Laurents and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The book also includes an introduction by Norris Houghton, who notes, among other things, that WSS is based on R&J. Each text tells the story of a love affair between a young woman and a young man who are caught between warring factions.4-0 out of 5 stars Jeany's review

5-0 out of 5 stars What do we do now?We dance!
How should your average adult shopper determine the difference between a graphic novel that is good and a graphic novel that is bad? It's simple. If a graphic novel is bad then it will be poorly illustrated, shamefully written, and just dull all over. If a graphic novel is good it can convert the unconvertible. I work with a woman who is a self-proclaimed woman "too old" for graphic novels. She never dug them. Never much cared for them. And then "To Dance" fell into her lap and BANG! Instant fan. This should come as no very great surprise. We're dealing with the Siegel duo. Mark Siegel the illustrator may at this point in time be best known for "Seadogs: An Epic Ocean Operattea" which he penned with aplomb. He's the editorial director of First Second (the company that gave the world that go-buy-it-right-now book "American Born Chinese" by Gene Luen Yang) and a talented artist in his own right. And Ms. Siena Cherson Siegel attended the School of America Ballet where she studied "preprofessionally" (as the book's author blurb says) for twelve years. So what couple is better suited to depict the rigor and wonder of how a child becomes a ballerina, I ask you? This is a biography like you've never seen it before.

This was my first money folding book and I really liked it. I actually had bought it for a friend's daughter for her birthday. She and I sat down one day and folded many of the diagrams. I have since bought this book for several other people and always recommend it to beginners.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST ORAGAMI BOOK FOR KIDS
i love it. when i first got it at the age of 9 (right before my birth day)i was so happy. i turned 10 yesterday and i couldn't wait until i got birthday money,i was folding like crazy. i totaly recomend it for all ages(i like the rings best)

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
this book is really fun to read and make the projects. the instructions are easy and i especially like how the author included visual hints to make sure you're doing it right along the way( "You should be able to see half of the N in ONE when you're done" ). The visual checkpoints are helpful too--when the author says "Like this:" and has a picture of the project so far. Interesting dollar-related facts are sprinkled throughout the book and it is written in an easy conversational style that is very funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic expectations
The book's title is what the book actually provides.Drawing for OLDER CHILDREN AND TEENS.People who give this book to a six year old shouldn't be surprised that some of the exercises or explanations are too hard. Likewise, people who want to draw like Rembrandt should realize that a book titled 'drawing for older children and teens' might not be the best resource.Do people even think any more?
5-0 out of 5 stars A higher way of thinking for those incllined
Mona completely re-opened the "right hemisphere" in both myself andthe kids I taught to use her methods (age 8 and older). For those who understand this mode of thinking, once the gate is opened and your drawing hand coordinates with it, you can draw anything well: buildings, landscapes, people, animals, vehicles. Others may not understand this approach, they may think differently and prefer the "left hemisphere" mode of analytical thinking, years of critique, the old method of drawing lots of nudes, studying the analysis behind perspective. But for those who want to get straight to the source of artistic ability and draw what they are seeing, in their mind or what they're directly looking at, here's an approach that can be very useful. After time with it, a visual of what you want to draw just seems to shoot out of your drawing hand. It sinks in deeply, vs. the other approach of taking years to gain talent, or even worse, the instant gratification approaches to drawing animals or cartoons that rely on memory of that particular step by step drawing, without being able to use it for any other drawing. All three could no doubt work together in some beneficial way, but this approach is highy recommended either by itself or with the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great art teaching aid
This book was easy to follow and interesting. It would be a little too much for a child to understand on their own, but with limited assistance it is an excellent guide for beginners who want to draw.My grandson was thrilled with it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
What a neat book and kit to use with your daughter! One thing the description doesn't say very well is the kit includes a mom guide, a secret keeper girl diary and cd and stickers. When you select it above it also suggests you should buy the diary. (I ended up with an extra diary to return...bummer)
5-0 out of 5 stars Also Great As A Girls' Small Group
My daughter (10) and I invited three of her friends and their moms to join us as we journey through this book and its companion, Secret Keeper:The Delicate Power of Modesty. As a small group, we are having so much fun and learning so much about each other. We meet one week and discuss the concepts from the books and plan our date and then we have our date on another night. We are planning this as a year-long journey, so there is no rush.
5-0 out of 5 stars Diary and Book of Beauty
Dannah Gresh has created a set of books that are completed with a CD by Rebecca St. James. This is a book set for 8-12 year old girls who are interested in inner and outer beauty. There are eight fun ideas for things like tea, parties, facials and shopping trips. The Diary has lined pages and "devotional-style" paragraphs for contemplation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Two in One Book
This book is a great book for kids to learn their ABC's and to begin art appreciation. Each letter has different pictures to go with it representing a word that starts with the letter of the the alphabet. There is a wide varitey of pictures in the book.Great book for young kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids!
My two year old loves this book!We originally borrowed this book from the library, but she didn't want to take it back so I compromised and bought her a copy. It's a great tool for reviewing the alphabet and learning words that start with each letter, plus she likes to look at all the pictures.Good purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful
I highly recommend this book.It is beautiful, it works on letters and word recognition and hopefully helps grow an appreciation for art and it's different forms. Not only does my son have it, it is now the baby gift that I give to all new parents.Love it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ed Emberley's Halloween Drawing Book by Ed Emberley
My son's favorite holiday if Halloween and he loves to draw.He is always trying to get me to draw him pictures. Before we got the book I could hardly draw a stick figure, now my 4yr old son and I can draw great pictures. We have already enjoyed hours of fun with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excerpts from the Big Orange Book
OK, I'm a big fan of Emberly, as should be apparent to anyone who's read any of my other reviews, but the salient detail about this book was left out of the other reviews: It consists entirely and only of excerpts from the Big Orange books. You don't really need this if you have the Orange book.5-0 out of 5 stars A fun filled book for children of all ages
This book is a true inspiration for children of all ages.It evokes creativity and aids in the developement of artistic skills- besides, it's just fun!Any child will have many hours of fun with this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars read age limit
Great book, but I did not pay close enough attention to the reccommended age limit. It really is a bit too much for my 7 year old. 9 years and up is accurate. It is a very fun book though, with lots of activities and things to make.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Hooks Up!
My kids and I love this book. There were so many cute ideas, several parties worth.Pirates are a hit with most kids and this book uses this theme combined with simple objects to make things that kids will think are awesome.I especially liked the recipes, the place cards, the ideas to make with salt dough, and the pirate facts throughout the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My son loves these silly songs
I'd suggest adding a CD with a tune so old parents can remember the melody...other than that...great.His favorite is Something in My Brother's Underpants.Of course, he's 5, so why wouldn't a song about stinky diapers be his favorite?

5-0 out of 5 stars Alan Katz is a genius!!
We have every one of Alan Katz's "silly dilly" song books, and we have worn them out. He gave life to lots of old stand-by songs, and now he's done the same to Christmas. I can't tell you the number of nights I've laid in bed with my son singing Katz's adorable, and hysterical new lyrics. If you're not a "silly-dilly" devotee yet, it's never too late to start. Don't have kids without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book from ages 1 to 100!!!!
I bought this book for my kids but the adults in the family are still passing it around. This is a book that will be loved by ALL.I laughed so hard the first time I read it I was in tears. It takes all of the Christmas songs we know and love and makes them into spoofs about the holidays we can all relate to told from the view point of the kids. From going to the mall to hanging the lights to caroling theres something in this book for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect pitch.
As a new volunteer Big Sister, I hoped this would help break the ice with my "little." We pass the book back and forth every week, each of us doing the exercises and writing comments in the margins.I can barely keep up with her!The author has perfect pitch when it comes to keeping girls interested, enthusiastic, and building self awareness and confidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brave New Girls: Creative Ideas To Help Girls Be Confident,
I am a teacher of troubled middle and high school girls and boys.I have used this book with some of my students. It has given them new perspectives. It is so easy and dangerous to live life according to theassumptions of one's particular culture. This book helps them see beyondthat. It helps girls especially see that they can achieve their goals byfollowing the simple exercises. It brings awareness to them of the methodsof the media which attempts to characterize them into a single mold.It isintrospective and enlightening.I recommend this book for anyone who workswith young people and those who care about their welfare.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for teen-age girls!
I was highly impressed by this book and can't wait to use it with my teen-age Girl Scout troop. My daughter (13) picked up the book and read it through. She thought the exercises were interesting, up-to-date and onesthat she would like to do herself and with her friends. The situations arevery true to the lives of teenagers today and the language is not"preachy" or "fake".I would highly recommend it toany teen-age girl. ...
