3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed though!!
The book is not bad, but not really as good as I expected. After having read the extraordinary book "The illussion of life", I wanted more from the same drawer. I picked the villains book.5-0 out of 5 stars Johnston and Thomas Together Again!
Anything by these two wonderful authors and amazing animators should be a must in anyone's collection. Yet, I am baffled that all of their books are currently out of print. I am sure one will not have trouble looking at a used bookstore for a copy of this. This book dealsprecisely with what the title says: The Disney Villians. In their usualclassic and lucid style, the authors discuss the troubles they ran whiledevising a villian. One that is wicked, yet appealing to the audience.Going through their catalog of movies from Snow White to Aladdin, theydiscuss in detail what a villian is all about, and how the villian relatesto the story, style and main character of each film. Whether one should bemore realistic, or have harder edges, or what kind of mannerisms will thisvillian have. Highly reccomended for the animator and artist, as well asthe Disney book lover as these are presented so well. For the enthuseist, which I also own, there is also a more expensive version of this book, hardcover with a slipcase, signed by each of the authors and a print of thefilmstrip from Snow White.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb art activity book about the Impressionists for kids
The invention of photograph had a profound impact on painting. At the start of the 19th-century the goal of painting was realism, but with a camera that became a moot point.Eventually the art world decided the only rational thing to do was to go in the opposite direction and to find an alternative to reality. The Impressionists represent the first successful movement by paintings to capture the public imagination with "non-realistic" art."Monet and the Impressionists for Kids" not only introduces young readers to Impressionism but also follows up with 21 activities that will allow them to try their hand at painting. These activities are what makes Carol Sabbeth's book stand out from others on the Impressionists in general and Claude Monet in particular, because it is pretty much impossible to be exposed to these paintings and not want to try to do it yourself.5-0 out of 5 stars monet and the impressionists for kids
This is a wonderful book with great ideas to do with kids so that they can get an understanding of the arts through hands on experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars As entertaining as it is educational.
Monet And The Impressionists For Kids is a book filled with 21 fun and educational activities to teach young people more about the classical painter Claude Monet and others in the grand and beautiful tradition of Impressionist art. Gorgeously illustrated in full color, Monet And The Impressionists For Kids features such activities as using colored construction paper to paint reflections, or painting the shimmering sky with watercolors. A wonderful biography and history, as well as a highly educational rainy-day fun book, Monet And The Impressionists For Kids is as entertaining as it is educational and highly recommended for home schooling and classroom curriculum supplementation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An art educators delight.
Learning Through Art is a wonderful teacher tool to expose students to art and artists through fun filled reading, writing, and observational activities. Many students have never visited or explored a museum. I share this book with students at the beginning of every school year and they love the activities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight for Seamstress
I had been searching through all of the sewing books I could find to learn more about the nature of fabric and fibers...and everything I could possibly want to know was here, and more. Absolutely fascinating. It is a textbook, but was written clearly enough that anyone with an interest in the area can easily understand it. I've been teaching classes to costumers and members of the local American Sewing Guild, who are equally impressed with the knowledge we got from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Trip into the creative capacity and vision of an artist through the eyes of innocent wonder
In 1988 I begged my Principal(I was a teacher in the Salinas valley) to purchase a set of this book.I taught in the "middle of nowhere " that now holds a good chunk of my heart. This was the time of teaching through literature sets, wholly in love with language, and inspiring children by creating together envirnments to make meaning and to find "context" for learning. It was a time to motivate lives. Toni Ungs, my then Principal, turned to me and replied, no, that I would be the "only teacher" on site who would use the set. And so it goes in teaching, yet another opportunity denied by those thinking within their prodigious logic systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Monet's Garden
I absolutely LOVED this book when I was younger. So, if you're having doubts about your child liking it, I wouldn't...I had the doll of Linnea and I carried it around with me everywhere...and I also brought the book everywhere I could as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fond memories from 2nd grade
After recess every day we would be given a page from the Anti Coloring book and allowed to draw to our hearts content for half an hour. It was one of my favorite times of the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up, most definitely!!
As a parent and former early childhood educator, I am pleased to write this review. In a day and age when entertainment does not require much thought process from our young ones (i.e. video games, pointless television shows, computer software, etc.), it is very refreshing to stumble upon the Anti-Coloring Book. Our children are exposed to endless amounts of effort-free fun stuff; and ultimately, young minds become lazy, trained, and forgetful of the power of imagination. How can you say no to a product that fosters developmentally appropriate learning, and promotes self awareness, self confidence, self expression, and independent thinking?? Help your child to break free from the lines and boundaries that hold them back.Kudos to the creators... it's time to get real about our children's needs!

5-0 out of 5 stars I grew up with Anti-Coloring Books
I still remember some of the specific pages I created in my Anti-Coloring Books almost 20 years ago! I had 4 or 5 different books and loved them all. These books encourage creativity, empowering kids to draw and think "outside the lines." I look forward to giving these books to my nieces, nephews, and children in the near future and are thrilled to learn that they're still available. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for the coffee table
The absolutely tremendous illustrations make this book interesting to all ages...especially adults. We keep it on the coffee table and company of all ages pick it up to get swept away by the imaginative book.

4-0 out of 5 stars More powerful than tv
This book has a gravity to it that is greater than the black hole of time and attention that is tv. My kids loved it and would sit and imagine themselves in the pictures (okay, so did I) as we traversed the lines blurred by Rob Gonsalves between real and surreal. The prose was nice but it is the paintings that make this such a delight. The only downside is the length; 33 pages, 16 paintings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings back old memories
I had this book as a child, and remembered drawing all the animals over and over again using the step by step provided by Ed.I had loved this book so much that I just bought it for my son who is 5.He has been complaining that he can't draw as well as his dad (thanks to Ed E.) and this will give him the edge up on old dad.I have told him about this book, and he has been asking about it over and over. Can't wait till he starts to outdraw his dad!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to drawing
My kids (ages 7 and 5) have loved this book. They have learned to follow the linear instructions and are so impressed with their ability to create. We also purchased Ed Emberly's "Make a World".Both are great for young learners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for beginner artist
I bought this one years ago for my older son when he was 3. Now it is my younger son (4 years now)'s favorite book. He can just sit by the table and draw with this book for hours. The book is a very good teaching guide. It teaches you to draw animals with simple instructions--so simple that a 4 years old can draw a owl just by following this book. I am going to buy another one for my friend since she was amazed how well my sons can draw. Amazon should stock more these kind of books which are great and cheap so customers do not even bother to search for bargins else where. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Reggio Emilia approach - loved this book
I am not a teacher and I was not experienced in the Reggio Emilia approach to preschool education (project approach) before reading this book. I sought this book for handwork ideas with the items my girls collect on their nature walks. I could not put this book down!5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for caring teachers of young children!
This book is a great way to ease yourself into Reggio or to inspire others on your team. You do not have to be "Reggio inspired" to know that young children love small, collectable items. They find such wonderful treasures, but classrooms are not often set up to make good use of this "Beautiful Stuff". This book has great photos and easy to read text showing readers the process that children and staff went through in developing this long term project.I particularly enjoyed the summaries at the end of each chapter on what the adults learned during the process. My only complaint would be that I wanted MORE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Stuff! Learning with found materials.
If you are a Reggio inspired teacher as I am, you will love this book.It takes you through the wonderful process of sharing the joys of all thoselittle treasures that young children find and love. You will be amazed athow clever the children in your class become at sorting and classifyingthrough the kinds of experiences that working with 'Beautiful Stuff'involes.I just love this book, it has changed the way I view thematerials that I put out for the children, and how I use them.My friendsalso love this book and all ask, "where did you get it?"Thankyou Cathy Topal Weisman and Lella Gandini you are inspiring. ... This book is perfect for your little ones. My 2 1/2 year old daughter loved the crafts we have already done out of the book.I also work with children as my job and also at my church.I highly recommend this book to all you parents, grandparents, Aunt & Uncles, All care givers, and even the expecting parents.A+ Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, realistic art projects for toddlers and preschoolers
I have a three-year old daughter with whom I wanted to explore arts and crafts. I looked at many different arts and crafts books before choosing this one to buy. Many other books that I looked at had projects that had complicated instructions or used materials that were expensive. I needed a book that I could pull off the bookshelf, open up, and pick a suitable art project quickly. Little Hands has realistic projects- by that, I mean projects that are meaningful, uncomplicated, and use basic materials that you're likely to have around the house.

Editorial Review

On one of their weekly balloon flights over Celesteville, Babar and Celeste notice that the railroad station is standing empty. Elephants, it seems, now prefer cars over trains. Interestingly, although Babar comments on the roads "jammed with traffic," he and his queen decide to focus on the other issue--the abandoned station. Celeste comes up with an idea to turn it into a museum to house their art collection, and soon an architect is drawing up plans and workers are renovating the building. When the great day of the opening arrives, what a show! The royal couple had acquired some pretty impressive and well known works of art--all featuring elephants, of course. Laurent de Brunhoff outdoes himself with the real-life art-inspired paintings and sculptures, from Mary Cassatt’s"Mother and Child" to Edvard Munch’s "The Scream" to Leonardo da Vinci’s "Mona Lisa." Young art buffs will enjoy the very age-appropriate art appreciation lessons, as the children are encouraged!to say whatever they want about the art: "I like this picture because it’s red," says Arthur about Van Gogh’s "Self-Portrait." When pedantic Cornelius tries to pontificate, Celeste gently hushes him. Includes a free pull-out poster. (Ages 4 to 7) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for the notecards-
This is a review for the note cards. They are beautiful. I had purchased several of Sabuda's books for my grandchildren, the Cookie Countdown is amazing and what a surprise at the end!I have a friend who loves toys and gadgets and other mysterious things who was being given a fairly prestigious award for his work across the country.I got a copy of America the Beautiful as a gift for him because I knew he would love it.Both he and his wife were just amazed. He sat for hours opening and looking at each page.He still tells me he finds something new each time he looks at it.I knew he would love these books as much as I do and as much as my grandchildren do.Sabuda makes little works of art!

These Pop Up Books are incredible, something you would want to collect.I am trying to buy all of Robert Sabuda's books for my grandchildren to enjoy when they come to my house. They are delicate books so they are not ones you would let kids play with everyday, but they are extra special books that you sit down with them and show the creativity and ingenuity that it must of taken to create these works of art.I have 6 of his books so far and hope to gradually collect them all. 5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful illustrations
Tom's style is delightful. I especially loved all the sub-jokes throughout. The style is deceptively simple. Yet there is so much going on, you'll want to reread it and see what you missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars My five year old grandson really identified with this book!
Such a well written, beautifully illustrated book. My five year old grandson really identified with the little boy in the book. He too gets grumpy when getting a stuffing hug from his gradma, me! It is quite natural for a five year old boy not to want to be hugged and my grandson was glad to see that the boy in the story felt the same way! I highly recommend this book! I will buy more books by the same author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book for my talking about social cues and situations
This book is great for my son who has a tendancy to take things quite literally and too seriously. In moments of frustration he loses it!He has trouble reading social cues and it's great how this book talks about feelings and situations that we all have.It opens doors to conversations about real situations that irritate him. While he's calm and laughing we can talk about them and he can see the situation and understand his feelings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good text to suppliment a strong hands-on art program
I used a much older edition of this book in high school (it had a brown cover way back then). This text was good suppliment to the hands-on projects we did in class. It taught about art basics like types of meduim, technique, and touched on artists, famous works, and how to look at art. This is a great text to ensure students develop and hold an interest, love and understanding of art. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Believe it or not, the first known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books--but only for adults. In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children's stories with movable flaps of paper. The rest, as they say, is history. Now aspiring paper mechanics (creative engineer-artists who create dimensional and movable books, otherwise known as pop-ups) can learn the how-tos and wherefores of this marvelous craft. From tip-ons to dummies to glue knock-outs, all the intricacies of pop-up production are outlined and explained.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers lots more than it promises.
This, as the title says, shows a variety of elementary paper popups - the cute little folded thingies in books and cards that stand up when the page is opened. The book's a real strength that it includes an actual, working specimen of each structure it describes. Except for one or two demonstratons, the popup folds never pass the basic, and never show the incredible breadth of artistry that can go into the best of popups. Still, it's readable and gives you an unambiguous idea of how the finished product will look, work, and be assembled. From that point forward, combining ideas, adapting them to your application, and decorating the paper surface are all up to your creative expression.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Pop ups
I was thrilled with the book. It was just what I wanted and will be a great tool for my artwork. The othe Pop Up book I ordered is the perfect complement to this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The strength of this book lies in its website
Elements of Pop Up is one of the few How To Make Pop-Ups books that features patterns for moving parts like wheel/tab mechanisms, which is why I purchased it. However, don't expect to be able to create anything extrememly fancy with this one. The examples are made of simple shapes that expect the user to expand upon them as necessary--this can be a detriment when you're trying to figure out how to alter the pattern to make something more complicated. The most useful part of the book, ironically, isn't even in the book: it's online at www.popupbooks.com, Carter's website. In the Surprise section, one can download all the patterns for making every example shown. Don't pass up buying the book, though. You'll most likely need Elements of Pop Up at your side to figure out how to assemble all your cut out pieces correctly. If you'd rather follow instructions and complete specific projects, I'd recommend Carter/Diaz's other book, Let's Make It Pop-Up! (ISBN 0-689-86508-2), which has pre-printed pictures and contains projects like Blooming Flower and Huggy Bear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
I read this with my 6 year old.We checked out a book about Seurat at the same time so I could show her the actual paintings. She giggled as we read.It was fun for the art to come alive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it Again!
This book takes the reader on a journey through a young girls imagination and provides a unique exposure for young children in art appreciation. The end of each book provides information on the artist, materials used to create the art form and the location of the painting. Both of my daughters, age two and five, really enjoyed reading the collection of Katie's adventures.I would recommend buying the hardcover books for long lasting use, because you will be reading it again and again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Freaks
Another amazing collection of eye candy fashion. I love the full page color photos and the brief descriptions. It is interesting to see how a sub-culture of fashion in itself fractures off into seperate catagories. Like L.O.L.A., european punk, goth, hippie, couture, et cetera. All amazingly creative free spirits. This is a great buy if you like cultures and community, fashion design, or interesting coffee table conversation starters. I love the book "fruits" as well, they are like twins, something to be kept together. I would love to see what changes in style another ten years has brought to Japan. Hopefully I'll run accross that book next. The only irksome bit was the bubblegum text color. It was hard to read at times. And my eyes aren't too bad.
