5-0 out of 5 stars Great for younger children
I think this is excellent for younger children. It is a good basic introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
Catherine Daly-Weir has done an excellent job of presenting a general and yet fairly complete introduction to Heraldry. The illustrations are beautiful and attractive.Obviusly written for the younger reader, adults will enjoy just as well.If you are working on a club/class project and need to creat a Coat of Arms, this book andRosemary Chorzempa's "Design Your Own Coat of Arms" are all you need! You will have no trouble creating your own Coat of Arms expecially with the plastic stencil which is included in the book.A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars The stencil alone is worth the price!
This book is written for a younger audience than, say Rosemary Chorzempa's Design Your Own Coat of Arms. While there might not be as much information included, what is included is presented very well. There are full-color drawings that will appeal to kids (and adults, for that matter!) and the explanations are clear and understandable. But truly the best thing about the book is the stencil. It includes many of the common images found on historical Coat of Arms.More importantly, the stencil is made from plastic, so it will withstand many tracings. Many times a stencil included with a book is made of heavy-duty paper or cardstock, but those just don't hold up to repeated use. This stencil is made of see-through green-tinted plastic, so it is easy to see exactly where to place the image you are tracing. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first.
My family has owned and LOVED the first book for 4 years now.Our sons (now ages 10 and 8 years) still look at the first book and beg us to play what our family calls "The wacky game"(one person is "IT" and spots something on a page in the book while everyone else has their backs turned , and the challenge is on). When I saw this second book I thought it would be the perfect family Christmas Eve present.Boy was I WRONG!Our whole family was so dissapointed at how unchallenging the pictures where put together. We've look at it for a total of 15 mins and it's sat on the book shelf ever since.
5-0 out of 5 stars As much fun for parents as children
This is one of the few books in our collection that sincerely gets "COOL!" and "NEAT!" comments from adults and children on every page. I didn't catch the skeleton or the bra until I had looked at the page several times. It didn't effect anyone adversely in my family (nor can I think it would most others). We are looking at it long after Christmas and can't wait to get the others in the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!
It's neat because there is lots of objects. There is a notepad with erasers hooked on it to make a house. We would recommend buying this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, simple, and intruiging!
"Draw 50 Sharks..." is an excellent book for children and adults interested in marine life, and at the same time wish to appreciate art. I found the step-by-step sketch examples non-intimidating as some drawingbooks present themselves. Children will find this book useful as a templatefor drawing sea creatures, and can improvise from them. The book is a"must-read" for children. Teachers should incorporate this bookinto their curriculum as a way to spark creativity in children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Picasso Rocks
This author's approach makes artists interesting for ages 8-80.A combination of comic strip style illustrations and copies of the artists work is entertaining and informative. This book makes cubism comprehensible. The series of books is an obvious "must" for art teachers (3rd-12th gr) but kids will enjoy it as part of a classroom library or in a personal collection as well.If you have a kid who likes to draw but hates to read, introduce him/her to this author's series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The diverse and prolific art career of Pablo Picasso
Well, if there is one artist who is perfect for Mike Venezia's "Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists" series it would have to be Pablo Picasso.Venezia comes to a key point about Picasso right off the bat, comparing a 1896 painting "The Altar Boy," done when Picasso was 15 with "Boy in Sailor Suit with Butterfly Net" done when he was 57 in 1938.Of course the first is done in a realist mode and the second is abstract. In fact, Venezia would be hard pressed to identify all of the different styles in which Picasso painted over the course of his career, but he does try.Venezia is able to focus on Picasso's Blue Period as the point where his work finally became different from anyone else's.We also look at the Rose Period and Cubism, with a lengthy section devoted to Picasso's most powerful and serious painting, "Guernica."However, the most insightful part of the book is when we see Piccaso's "Portrait of Jaime Sabartes as a Spanish Grandee" with another portrait done from a photograph. The comparison shows that although the painting was abstract, he still managed to make it look like the real person.4-0 out of 5 stars This book is about...
This book was about a painter. The book is non-fiction. Picasso was in his teens when he started painting. He painted lots of famous pictures. One of his paintings was 12 feet high and 25 feet wide.He painted it because he was mad about people dying in the civil war in Spain. He likes to move noses and body parts around in his paintings.I liked learning about Picasso. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ever had an airplane sketch "trapped" inside you?
Draw 50 Airplanes has been around for a while. I'm glad that it is still in print.Wish it had been around when I was a kid, doodling airplanes. A bunch of my favorites are there: Sopwiths,P-40s, Spitfires, F-86 Sabres, P-38s.Hopefully, someday, there will be a revised edition that can capture some late arrivals to the first century of flightthat today's kids really like- the Space Shuttle, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-117 Nighthawk. There are dozens of "how to sketch", "how to draw" titles out there. This is not one of those books. This book skips the nuances of perspective and the agony of descriptive geometry. It is not about fine art... it is not about drafting...When you sign a note to a friend, did you ever want to be able to add a quick Spitfire with a flourish? One that someone else thinks looks like a Spitfire?Or how about a sketch of the Wright Flyer? This is THAT kind of a book. This is about the serious business of producing a happy characture of the airplane that dances in your head. It will egg you on until you pick up a pencil and make an airplane appear on the page.It will help you perfect that skill. A curved line here, a pair of straight lines there. One pencil stroke at a time. And it obviously wasn't written just for kids. This book can help just about anyone create some really neat airplane doodles.Who knows what comes from that... So many rich experiences in life depend on having some early successes, the hopeful satisfaction that causes you to press onward... J. Campbell Martin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every child WILL love to create and draw!
As a child who loved to draw - but was all "thumbs" in drawing - Emberley's Thumbprintbook was an amazing gift.Suddenly, I could duplicate the art in a drawing book and then go on to create my own shapes and creations. As I got older, I moved onto his other wonderful art books (such as Red, Puple, Orange, Green), but my thumbprints always remained my favorite.5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbodies are the best!
This is one of the most simple and entertaining art books to be found for the younger set, or those who just love to doodle. I am fourteen, and I still enjoy pulling this book out to create thumbprint pictures with my siblings. All you need is an ink pad, some paper, and a pen to begin making the fun characters Mr. Emberley presents here, leaving the kitchen table much cleaner than it would be after finger painting. And since the pictures consist of your thumbprint and a few simple lines and dots, children can begin trying to make these as soon as they are able to grasp a pencil. 5-0 out of 5 stars FOR ANY CHILD AFRAID OF ART.....
For any child afraid he or she cant draw well.... just buy them this book, and watch how much pride they have in what they can accomplish. This book is very basic and shows little characters you can make with a thumbprint (or circle or blob) but dont let your "limited adult imagination" think that is just a few things... there are TONS of things you can draw!!!!!! and they are very easy. I think this is a perfect first drawing book...or for a child who is already convinced that "I cant draw" i hear kids say that and i think its so sad.... this book is really a positive thing :) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Proof Of This Book
I am now 26 years old but as a child, I had at least 4 of Ed Emberley's books and my mother would take my brother and I to the library to check out those we didn't have.
3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty complex
I bought this book for my 9 year old step-daughter. She loves art and drawing. I also got the Ed Emberley book of animals, which is great. This book seems cluttered and the drawings are much more difficult. The reading level says 9-12, but I'd say its the upper end of that range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Setting Up A Painting Center in Garage or Classroom is a must ....this helps you design painting experiences
I teach children in South Oxnard in California K-6 holding an MFA and art certification(but I am a regular classroom teacher) and teaching from WV to LA in South Central, to Salinas Valley and at Warner in the San Diego Mountains servicing an Indian community for 22 years of my life. I provide this as basis for insisting that children fundamentally need to paint as early as you can get them goingand well into their teens. It really should be a fundamental part of their program. That said, this book is extremely useful to all parents and teachers that need starting places. It discusses painting with copious illustrations and child works to open you to application within your own environment. As much as I use art, which is daily, I still respected very much the professional content, samples and unraveling of building a successful painting experience. Right now I'm on summer break anticipating a new year. Usually this means starting my first grade in the painting center and thinking of those first of year "self-portraits"...sure enough I open the beginning of the text to a rich variety of work that is self portrait related and is also figurative. You know,m we always start with self... So I read this section and I come upon a photo of a 20 month old with her brush on newspapers putting blue paint all over the floor. One day 15 years ago I came home to much the same scene when my mom had my 9 month old exploring line with black paint in her high chair. She was so involved my arrival was unnoticed. This book captures these kinds of connections paint makes. Myself as artist I think paint is a Holy experience. It is so connected to thought, emotion, viseral primordial places....if only we could bottle it and sell it. Oh, we can and we can use this text to guide a way of using painting with children. The vocabulary of painting, line, contour, training our looking, seeing, texture, shape(form), color, composition, vision aesthetics...more are described, made visual, broken down in reasonable ways. I really was so delighted to find the book and this next year it will be an very major part of what I do in the classroom painting with the children and in my dialogs with other instructors at my site.
