3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed though!!
The book is not bad, but not really as good as I expected. After having read the extraordinary book "The illussion of life", I wanted more from the same drawer. I picked the villains book.5-0 out of 5 stars Johnston and Thomas Together Again!
Anything by these two wonderful authors and amazing animators should be a must in anyone's collection. Yet, I am baffled that all of their books are currently out of print. I am sure one will not have trouble looking at a used bookstore for a copy of this. This book dealsprecisely with what the title says: The Disney Villians. In their usualclassic and lucid style, the authors discuss the troubles they ran whiledevising a villian. One that is wicked, yet appealing to the audience.Going through their catalog of movies from Snow White to Aladdin, theydiscuss in detail what a villian is all about, and how the villian relatesto the story, style and main character of each film. Whether one should bemore realistic, or have harder edges, or what kind of mannerisms will thisvillian have. Highly reccomended for the animator and artist, as well asthe Disney book lover as these are presented so well. For the enthuseist, which I also own, there is also a more expensive version of this book, hardcover with a slipcase, signed by each of the authors and a print of thefilmstrip from Snow White.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Learning to cartoon and draw caricatures can be a daunting task, but the late Jack Hamm makes it all come together. From dozens and dozens of facial expressions and basic anatomy, animation and advertising, even political and editorial cartoons, the artist takes you step by step the world of drawing "funny pictures". Regardless of style or genre there is plenty to learn here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I own most of Mr. Hamm's books now and all of them are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars don't have a clue how to draw manga this is the book you should start with
Fantastic, I would say this is the first book anyone interested in drawing manga should buy. I have other manga books, but this one is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
my husband uses this a great deal and finds it very helpful it has in-depth basics

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as they say
Dont get me wrong this book does teach you the basics and then abit more but, if you're like me and learn more visually then reading, then this book aint for you. This books artwork is real 80s work, ya know pointy face with messed up face features like eyes alittle to high or not portioned correctly, all old etc etc( even Dragon ball Z style looks better then these ). So that for one through me off I have little anime/manga experience and my artwork is far better then this one so I suggest buying How to draw manga volume one and not MORE how to do draw manga volume one ( which is just as good or better in the reading portion )For the older volume has a more Recent style and not an old style. Although this volume gives you info that should be needed in this catagory it just makes you feel like your drawings will end up turning out old and ugly, not something for ppl who are looking for a more recent drawing style. And Btw MHTDM Volume 2 has a more recent style so if you are planning on buying two, go for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book - great style
Ive always loved the semi-cartoony style of artists like Ryan Dunlavey and Ben Caldwell. I always wanted to learn how to draw this way. when i saw this book on amazon, i was amazed at how lucky I was to find it! once i got It, i started using it right away. it was a great book and i learned ssssooooo much from it that i wouldve otherwise never known. this book improved the quality of my drawings so much more than i couldve imagined and i bet it can to the same to yours.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for fans
I love Batman the Animated Series. When I heard of this book, I immeadietly bought it. You'll data on every character from the series and what episodes they first appeared in. Some of the pictures are photo shots from the series. Great for Batman fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars batman guide
my three year old son loves this book he wants to know who all the characters are and he loves to tell them back to you. this book has been wonderful!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for kids
I grew up watching this series, and fell in love with Batman because of it.The moment I saw a preview of the pages for Nightwing and Harley Quinn (my favorite characters) I rushed to order this. However, I was a bit disappointed.I'm used to the "Ultimate Guide to ---" Books and was expecting this book to be just as detailed. It is very thin, and not very specific. This book is great for people and kids who know very little about the series and want to get acquainted. For true fans, its not even necessary.Only major characters are covered.I would have been more impressed if a character like Rupert Thorne's accomplice Candace would have gotten a page.I don't see why not, she appeared in multiple episodes. However, in this book, Rupert himself only get a paragraph on the "Other Villians" page.An episode guide would have also been nice. The most you get here is a list of where each major character first appeared.I hope a more detailed book will appear in the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, interesting art!!
My 8 year old daughter received this as a Christmas gift five months ago, and it is wonderful! It's challenging but attainable drawing. Too often, art books are WAY too "kiddy" and cartoony with too little flavor, or way too complicated and mature. This is great for my daughter- it's neither *kiddy* nor too mature. She is a self-motivated artist, and I have seen a definite improvement in her skill from her trying to emulate the style and forms in this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not anime
First of all it should be titled "Kids draw Manga" not "Kids draw Anime" because Anime and Manga are different and what this book teaches is considered as manga but anyway this wouldn't even be considered manga or anime because it's just way to bad and crappy. I mean don't even waste your time or money with this book, better yet go find it at your local library. I love to draw manga and anime and when I flipped through this book me and my friends, we were pissed off because it's an embarrassment. So not beginners or anyone above that. This is mainly for kids under the age of 7 or something.

2-0 out of 5 stars anime?!
I just to a glips this book and I look at it andthought "anime?!" the answer was no. It was to cartoony.Yes it's a could book to draw cartoons but not anime. For instance look at Salior moon, Rayearth or Yu-gi-oh then look at this book do the look a like? If you want to learn real anime don't get this book you could get better ones for less. THIS IS A NOTE IF YOUR THINKING ABOUT GETTING ANY OF HIS MANGA MANIA BOOKS when you see the great art on the front it isn't his he hires people to do a whole chunk of the book and the front and back of the book for him then like only a small amount is his work and on the front of the book it says the book was by him. What did he do besides put no-anime charaters in it?! That's what I'm still trying to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books of its kind.
Fantasy! Cartooning is simply one of the best books of its kind.I own many books on illustration and cartooning and am the creator of Blue Line Comics.I am constantly looking for new ideas and techniques and have found many fresh ideas in Ben Caldwell's books. One of the best things about his books is that he breaks things down step by step, but doesn't fully complete the drawings... that's your job. Most drawing books will show you the completed work, fully inked and often colored.Mr. Caldwell sets the stage on your sketchbook, it's up to you to decide how it is going to end.Not only is he teaching you the basics in drawing, he's also helping spark your imagination.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy! Cartooning review
Ben Caldwell loves to draw! And he loves to tell about how he loves to draw. His new book, Fantasy! Cartooning is a delightful and entertaining look at how to draw heroes, creatures, rogues and maidens.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good addition to any artist's library
Good follow-up book that expands on the foundation set in Action Cartooning. The 2-3 step drawing process of beautifully rendered cartoon drawings of fantasy heroes, villains, and animals/beasts is effectively supported and enhanced with many design tips on how to portray specific traits/moods/archetypes along with concise explanations of their cultural/historical/mythological backgrounds. This book is suitable for beginner and intermediate budding artists as a foundation for self-study and a good source of inspiration for more advanced artists that may find Ben's cartooning approach refreshing and fun as they experiment on their own sketchbooks. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
I'm an Ed Emberly fan, and as my children (and admittedly myself) have drawn so much out of his books, we've started to branch out to more sophisticated drawings. With the exception of Ed's, most "how-to" books pretty much "teach" in the same way: They give you a number of guides which are supposed to take you from simple shapes to the picture you're trying to arrive at.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch
After reading several books on the subject, I honestly feel that this is the best when it comes to get a good feel for the industry and the genre. It is not too wordy, as some on the topic, but it is not too skimpy either.I really feel I learned something from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kids' Stuff
I found this book to lack depth and good art examples. The design isn't that great either. It throws a couple bits of jargon to feel impressive, but there isn't a lot of good information here. Some examples:

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Imaginative Man in the History of Mankind
Walt Disney is Legend, he changed the world with entertainment unlike anybody's ever seen and ever since his death, millions have honored in Animation, filmaking and theme parks. This is his story in a 7 and up chapter book spaning from his birth in 1901 to the Laugh O' Gram film company to Mickey Mouse, to Snow White, to Disneyland, to Mary Poppins and to his passing in 1966. His life and career is remarkable, extrodonary, amazing and I think his life should be a biographical movie with either Johnny Depp or Edward Norton as Walt. I Idolize Walt Disney like no other celebrity.

4-0 out of 5 stars walt disney bio
This book is perfect for 3rd and 4th grade students. My students enjoyed the anecdotes about Walt's childhood. I liked that it was meaty enough to encourage discussion. The book also includes a section of fabulous photographs of Walt Disney and some early Disney characters. It does not include much info about the Walt Disney Company after Walt's death in the early 1960's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Walt bio for 12 to 17 years
Yet another bio on Walt Disney, this one written for young people, ages 12 and up. 96 pages in length, it tells the story of his life and career. It is fairly accurate, from a reliable publisher. If you have a child that is younger than this age group, I might suggest "Walt Disney, Young Movie Maker". It focuses more on his childhood, explaining how the events, persons, and places he lived when he was young affected his career as an adult. It really helps kids connect with him. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars umm... not too convincing...
I had a look into this book at local store. I definitely not convinced that Katy had the essence of manga in the drawings. Well, okay.. it's manga-ish, but not manga.
1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this book for your children.
If your children are in any way serious about being good at drawing manga - or drawing, period - this is NOT the book to buy for them. I can only assume books like this come about because some clueless publisher has a 13 year old daughter who "draws anime", because this is not up to what any sane person would consider publishable "how-to-draw" book standards. Anatomy? Not important here, not even stylized anatomy. Proportions? What are these "pro-por-ti-ons" you speak of? This book sure doesn't know. It disturbs me that so many how-to-draw manga books are illustrated by people who, frankly, need one of these books themselves. Don't doom your children to hours of failure and frustration.

It was natural for me to pick up this book when I saw it laying around at teh library. It was love at first sight. Some of the best known names are mentioned in or contributed to this volume. Zining = hardcore rad.
3-0 out of 5 stars This book could be so great, so why include the "f" word? Page 104.
As an art teacher I was thrilled to see the perfect zine manual for my students, until one of them spotted the "f" word on page 104. It's only included in the title of a referenced book, but Why?! Is that one book so important, that it MUST be included as a reference?... for 6-12th graders? Please tell me that the second edition of this wonderful resource will not include, "F***ed up and Photocopied" in the biblography... maybe then I can use it in my classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Zine Book EVER!
This is a BEAUTIFULLY put together manual for making a zine or mini-comic.It is clearly made with the love and care of true zine-makers.I have been making zines for over 10 years and still found tons of information within the pages of this wee treasure that I had not before known.I would recommend this for all.It is just a magnificently inspiring and helpful document for self-publication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for practicing artistic techniques
Cartooning Basics is an award-winning, step-by-step cartooning guidebook for doodlers age 7 and up. Though the simple illustrations and plain-terms instructions are readily accessible to young people, they are equally instructive to amateur adults seeking to hone their cartooning skills and learn how to create cartoon characters. Now in an enlarged and revised format with a foreward by Jim Davis, creator of "Garfield", Cartooning Basics covers how to get ideas for 'toons, common symbols, especial tips for expressions and facial features, showing distance, depth, and perspective, and much more, while the many, many illustrations demonstrate how all cartoons begin as a collection of simple shapes, from which details are elaborated. Highly recommended for practicing artistic techniques or just plain drawing fun.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a great gift!
My seven year old daughter recieved this book as a gift and just loves it! She has never felt very comfortable in her artistic abilities and this book has provided her with the instruction she needed to build up her confidence. She practices with the book almost daily and now insists on making everyone's birthday cards using characters out of the book and ones she has created on her own. It was such a great gift that we now give it as a gift; along with a pad of drawing paper, a fun pencil and an eraser, it is always a big hit! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A methodically crafted instructional guide for young people
1-2-3 Draw Cartoon People: A Step-by-Step Guide was created by syndicated comic strip artist Steve Barr as a useful and "user friendly", methodically crafted instructional guide for young people wanting to create their own cartoon figures. Beginning with some expert preparatory advice and a few invaluable cartooning tips, Barr stars with simple, basic shapes and lines which can be quickly copied and expanded upon. The very nicely illustrated instructions continue on for drawing heads, hair, expressions, emotions, hands, arms, boys, girls, grandparents, and characters in motion. Also very highly recommended for budding artists are Steve Barr's two companion instructional books: 1-2-3 draw Cartoon Faces: A Step-by-Step Guideand 1-2-3 Draw Cartoon Animals: A Step-by-Step Guide. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
Harry Hamernik is one of the people I learned caricatures from about 10 years ago at Sea World In San Diego. He then moved on to be manager at Legoland and Knott's Berry Farm.I helped him start operations at Knott's, hiring 30+ artists who never drew with a marker or with a live model in front of them.It was the first time I tried to train that many artists but Harry had already been doing it for years, every season a new batch of crazy artists. So he knows how to present the needed information and reach a wide range of people.Unlike a lot of the "how to draw" books being produced these days by general artists who try to capitalize on the expanding market by publishing books outside of their field of experience, Harry is a working professional in the field. He's also an instructor at The Art Institute in San Diego, so he knows how to teach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book!
Face Off is the exact book I was looking for in getting started with caricatures! Most books I have found only have front, and sometimes profile view, but Face Off has these and ¾ view along with coloring techniques! I really like the diversity in people and the age range really helps me to learn how to draw all types of people. My friends and family love it when I draw them and now it actually looks like a cartoon version of them! I would recommend this book to everyone! ... Read more

My 12-year-old picked up this book and devoured it in one sitting, reporting it helped him conquer some of the problems he had encountered as a recreational cartoonist. He especially enjoyed the section devoted to writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought it would be!
This book is for people who want to know how to draw the Peanuts characters, such as Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Sally, Linus, etc etc. However the problem was that they only show the characters in one position. Some characters have two positions. For example, there is Linus standing up and Linus clutching his blanket for dear life. They never show Lucy yelling at Charlie Brown on the baseball field, or Peppermint Patty talking on the phone with her secret love, Charlie Brown. Otherwise I guess it's ok...buy it if you want to keep up the hard work of Charles M. Schulz!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun for Peanuts Lovers
I am no artist, but even I can draw Snoopy now if I look at the instructions!Lots of Fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!!
Since my daughter read this book, she knows how to draw very well peanuts characters. This book is extremly good. Stronly recommended! ... Read more
