Excellent Book!
My kids and I love "Scribbles". We also purchased "Doodles" at the same time. The drawings are fun and my kids are always entertained and challenged...great for car trips or anywhere you and your kids are stuck sitting around waiting.
Scribbles
My son is 4 and really loves this book.I initially bought it for use in the car on long trips but it was too heavy for him to hold and color in his lap.He loves using it at home on the table.

Ignore all other reviews!
I beleive that the other reviews were written by furious begginer artists whom had tried a few times and were uspset with their results.It takes time to learn how to draw and drawing simple shapes such s circles is not as easy as it is made out to be! I don't think this book could be made any simpler and is perfect for the begginer.
finsh my ok reveiw
When I tried to draw Lugu I traced it better than I drew it fowolling the steps.For people who think other people didn't try hard enough well I tried for 5 hours and still my tracing came out better.Finaly I gave up.It was to hard. If you like to trace pokemon this is a great book.

Simply amazing
This book is an enchanting and fun way to learn how to draw dragons and other mythical creatures. It helped me a lot in my art with it's easy to follow instructions and beautiful illustrations. Jessica Peffer really knows what she is doing and this book is really well organized. A truely amazing book.

A Wonderful Way To Learn How To Draw!
As far as drawing can go, this has to be one of the most helpful books out there. I must admit that I am a dragon-obsessed freak, but you don't have to like dragons or fantasy art in order to like this book.
Simply Amazing.
I found this book to be extremely helpful.The author of this book did an amazing job with the illustrations and breaking down the steps where they are able to be followed to the finished product.As far as drawing books go, this was one of the far more helpful and I was thrilled with gaining insight on how to draw the more complicated anatomical features of the fantasy creatures, such as wings with feathers.I suggest this book to anyone who is interested in fantasy drawing, but cannot seem to pinpoint certain features such as feathers, horns, or tails.

Two thumbprints up for this book!
Love this little book! My 3 year old son hasmade pictures with his fingerprints at his preschool. This isa great way for children to express themselves by making their fingerprints into any number of little animal or other creatures. I bought this book for us to make projects with at home. I thought it would be great for his little thank you notes to relatives. My son loves this book. If you decide to buy this book, you will not be dissapointed. I also enjoyed using this myself as an adult.

A GOOD STARTING PLACE FOR KIDS TO DRAW
I purchased this book to use in two art camps.One was focused on printmaking and the other on cartooning.Once students open the book they were eager to try out the fingerprint illustrations and began looking for particular animals they wanted to illustrate.The book is colorful and appealing and provides a good starting place for kids to draw with ready success 'at their fingertips.' The only problem we encountered was the need for fine line marker for details as their fingerprints are small and their drawings were less successful if the marker they used was too thick or bled.

My 5 yo daughter LOVED this book.
We gave my 5 yo daughter this book, some washable kid's ink pads and a sketchbook this weekend for her 5th birthday.She LOVES it.She drew some pretty amazing pictures last night with just a little help to work through the steps.I'm sure she'll be creating masterpieces all on her own in no time!

Very good instructions and entertainment
My son is 6 years old and he loves this book.The instructions are very clear, he has no difficulty in following them.He has created dozens of pictures since buying the book and is quite happy to spend hours simply making pictures.He gets a real sense of accomplishment from being able to create the pictures.I highly recomend this book.

So much fun!
Ed Emberley is a cottage industry when it comes to drawing and teaching children to draw things like animals, faces, trucks and trains, weirdos, the world and oh, so much more. While these books are directed toward early school-age children, I know many adults who would benefit from and find the books and instructions helpful and fun.
This book keeps kids happy, not frustrated
Some art books are too tough for kids without drawing skills, they can actually make kids cry in frustration with, "I don't get it, I can't do it". I have never had that problem with books from this artist, kids just love these! Ed Emberly has made some wonderful books for kids and grown-ups of any age that have no drawing skills, but want to learn a simple way. His books are the easiest books to get you started if you have no previous drawing skills. He doesn't talk down to you, he doesn't talk at all but uses his step by step method for you to follow. As a result, you can use these books for kids that have language issues. He starts with a step by step illustrated lesson to draw one simple item. First a simple straight line here, then insert a circle then, then another line, step by step along the way and before you know it you have a completed drawing that you can be really proud of. I teach Cub Scouts and this artist makes the perfect book for teaching a class when you are a volunteer yourself that is not an art pro.

Great for HS students, too!
I'm a high school art teacher and I recently saw this book at the local library.I'll soon be ordering it as a resource for my classroom because it's got a lot of good, basic information and an easy-to-understand format that's very similar to the way I introduce drawing techniques to my Art 1 students.I'm impressed!

excellent for adults, too
If you are an adult who never learned fundamentals of drawing, this book is great. It demystifies shading and perspective, in a way that no other book or instructor has been able to get through to me. The exercises are basic and easy to practice, with an economy of words.This book is also perfect for children.

Teen horse lovers will love this!
I just received this book and started on it right away.I thought this would take forever to do but with a little practice I was doing great. I highly suggest this book for advanced artists and the age of 9 and up.This book offers a variety or horses to draw including close-up pictures.If you know your circles and lines you could do this!Also, you only do good if you start out by reading the instructions in the front of the book.You'll want hints.I did good so you will too!

Great for all artists
I am the best horse drawer in my school, but with this book, I can still find details that I never paid any attention to before!
Impressive, but lacking...
I personally feel that this book is for the established artist who knows his basic concepts in art. For the newbie, this might not be the one for you. The drawings within are definitely for those of a slightly higher level.Read more

Excellent for young budding artists
I got this for my sons 9th Birthday - it give the basics of 3D drawing in a way that children of his age can understand.I would recommend this book to people with children who enjoy drawing and would like to improve the results

Good book to learn how to draw
I'm trying to learn how to draw now because I was afraid to take art classes in high school. This book has made it fun. I really liked the "how to draw cars" by the same author. This book was not as helpful but it is still a good book.

Thank Heavens for Dubosque
With 8 grandchildren under 10 years of age, this book has delighted all of them.We have 3 budding artists and now the others are becoming more creative.The Dubosque books are an answer to parents who are not artistic or don't have the time to answer all their questions.With our schools eliminating many arts programs it will be up to parents to interest their children in the finer things, which begin with the basics.

Drawing helps writing practice more fun
These books are great.They have many thematic ties to our curriculum.I made them into centers by copying the book and gluing them to a colorful folder and laminating it.I put those in the writing center whenever we were focusing on a certain theme.A great resource for 1-3.

Improves handwriting and basic drawing skills!A++++
This is a wonderful set of books.We are using it as a handwriting practice program (for 1st & 2nd grade) rather than a drawing program, but I'm sure it has applications both ways.
Can't Keep Them On the Shelves!
I am a teacher-librarian and I can't keep these drawing books on the shelves! I am always looking for drawing books and these are perfect for the primary and early elementary age group. The simple instructions and diagrams help the children to produce realistic drawings which are the starting point for a host of creative projects! my daughters and I really enjoy this book!
We`ve had this book for over 3 years now, and my 5 year old daughter, loves to look at it over and over again, and beleive me, everytime we read it, a different story develops or we discover something we had`t seen before. Now I have started reading it with my 2 year old, and she too is facinated by it, it has helped her with her vocabulary.

terrific for small and older children
The wonderful , colorful illustrationsinspire children in an easy step by step non-intimidating way.Even the 5th graders at the school I teach art at love this book and so do I.

Fond memories from 2nd grade
After recess every day we would be given a page from the Anti Coloring book and allowed to draw to our hearts content for half an hour. It was one of my favorite times of the day.

Two thumbs up, most definitely!!
As a parent and former early childhood educator, I am pleased to write this review. In a day and age when entertainment does not require much thought process from our young ones (i.e. video games, pointless television shows, computer software, etc.), it is very refreshing to stumble upon the Anti-Coloring Book. Our children are exposed to endless amounts of effort-free fun stuff; and ultimately, young minds become lazy, trained, and forgetful of the power of imagination. How can you say no to a product that fosters developmentally appropriate learning, and promotes self awareness, self confidence, self expression, and independent thinking?? Help your child to break free from the lines and boundaries that hold them back.Kudos to the creators... it's time to get real about our children's needs!

I grew up with Anti-Coloring Books
I still remember some of the specific pages I created in my Anti-Coloring Books almost 20 years ago! I had 4 or 5 different books and loved them all. These books encourage creativity, empowering kids to draw and think "outside the lines." Brings back old memories
I had this book as a child, and remembered drawing all the animals over and over again using the step by step provided by Ed.I had loved this book so much that I just bought it for my son who is 5.He has been complaining that he can't draw as well as his dad (thanks to Ed E.) and this will give him the edge up on old dad.I have told him about this book, and he has been asking about it over and over.Can't wait till he starts to outdraw his dad!

Great introduction to drawing
My kids (ages 7 and 5) have loved this book.They have learned to follow the linear instructions and are so impressed with their ability to create.We also purchased Ed Emberly's "Make a World".Both are great for young learners.

Best book for beginner artist
I bought this one years ago for my older son when he was 3. Now it is my younger son (4 years now)'s favorite book. He can just sit by the table and draw with this book for hours. The book is a very good teaching guide. It teaches you to draw animals with simple instructions--so simple that a 4 years old can draw a owl just by following this book. I am going to buy another one for my friend since she was amazed how well my sons can draw. Delightful illustrations
Tom's style is delightful. I especially loved all the sub-jokes throughout. The style is deceptively simple. Yet there is so much going on, you'll want to reread it and see what you missed.

My five year old grandson really identified with this book!
Such a well written, beautifully illustrated book. My five year old grandson really identified with the little boy in the book. He too gets grumpy when getting a stuffing hug from his gradma, me! It is quite natural for a five year old boy not to want to be hugged and my grandson was glad to see that the boy in the story felt the same way! I highly recommend this book! I will buy more books by the same author.

Incredible book for my talking about social cues and situations
This book is great for my son who has a tendancy to take things quite literally and too seriously.In moments of frustration he loses it!He has trouble reading social cues and it's great how this book talks about feelings and situations that we all have.It opens doors to conversations about real situations that irritate him.While he's calm and laughing we can talk about them and he can see the situation and understand his feelings.

Ed Emberly has made some wonderful books for kids and grown-ups of any age that have no drawing skills, but want to learn a simple way. Realistic expectations
The book's title is what the book actually provides.Drawing for OLDER CHILDREN AND TEENS.People who give this book to a six year old shouldn't be surprised that some of the exercises or explanations are too hard. Likewise, people who want to draw like Rembrandt should realize that a book titled 'drawing for older children and teens' might not be the best resource.Do people even think any more?
A higher way of thinking for those incllined
Mona completely re-opened the "right hemisphere" in both myself andthe kids I taught to use her methods (age 8 and older). For those who understand this mode of thinking, once the gate is opened and your drawing hand coordinates with it, you can draw anything well: buildings, landscapes, people, animals, vehicles. Others may not understand this approach, they may think differently and prefer the "left hemisphere" mode of analytical thinking, years of critique, the old method of drawing lots of nudes, studying the analysis behind perspective.But for those who want to get straight to the source of artistic ability and draw what they are seeing, in their mind or what they're directly looking at, here's an approach that can be very useful. After time with it, a visual of what you want to draw just seems to shoot out of your drawing hand. It sinks in deeply, vs. the other approach of taking years to gain talent, or even worse, the instant gratification approaches to drawing animals or cartoons that rely on memory of that particular step by step drawing, without being able to use it for any other drawing. All three could no doubt work together in some beneficial way, but this approach is highy recommended either by itself or with the others.

Ed Emberley's Halloween Drawing Book by Ed Emberley
My son's favorite holiday if Halloween and he loves to draw.He is always trying to get me to draw him pictures.Before we got the book I could hardly draw a stick figure, now my 4yr old son and I can draw great pictures.We have already enjoyed hours of fun with this book.

Excerpts from the Big Orange Book
OK, I'm a big fan of Emberly, as should be apparent to anyone who's read any of my other reviews, but the salient detail about this book was left out of the other reviews: It consists entirely and only of excerpts from the Big Orange books.
