5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Art for Kids
I purchased this book for my kids who were 6 and 10 at the time.I was pleasantly surprised by the scope and variety of art covered in this book.Several well-chosen (nothing gory or disturbing to children) pieces of art are presented in nice, full color reproductions. The authors then point out various interesting things about the piece and ask fun questions about it.All of this serves to help children not just "look" at art, but to enjoy it and appreciate it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!
I bought this book for my grandchildren, a boy and a girl ages 2 1/2 and 5.Not only are they thrilled with it, their parents are enchanted. This book should be read by everyone! It's a marvelous primer and guide to the world of art, with pictures of some of the world's most famous art treasures and amazingly interesting explanations of why these particular pieces have endured. If you want your children or grandchildren to learn about what makes art relevant, this is the book for them!It should be sold in every art museum in the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book!
I was slightly reluctant at first to purchase this book - I thought it might not be one of our son's favorites at bedtime (4 1/2 years old). (He's your typical boy - loves books about cars, tractors, dump trucks, etc) Boy, was I wrong! The first night we sat down to read it, we both had a blast! This book does such a nice job of explaining art to children, in terms that he understands, that he was excited about reading it the next night. We went through the book the first time just flipping pages to look at the artwork, and stopping to read the details of the ones he found interesting at first. It was fun for me as a parent to learn what he finds interesting in art.I would recommend this book 100%! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been Better for Those in the Know
For those in the know, the book suffers for want of careful editing. It is flawed, for example, by illustrator David Diaz' arrogance in placing his own designs on Quezada's pottery. Had this book been about van Gogh, Picasso or any other well-known artist, it is unlikely he would have portrayed their art with no concern for what it looked like in reality. This puts down Juan Quezada. Diaz also carelessly depicts Quezada building a pot by the continuous-coil method of the Indians of the American Southwest rather than by the distinctive method that he innovated and for which he is known. Better editing would have caught these problems with the illustrations as well as a multitude of minor inaccuracies that occur in the text, nearly one to a page. For example, in speaking of using a bean to burnish pottery, the author comments, "Of course dried beans can be found in any kitchen in the village." The bean in question is an inedible wild bean, the chilicote-not the kind that would normally be found in anyone's kitchen. Such editorial problems do not, however, detract from this production as a children's book. They are the sort that only one in the know would see.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kid is obsessed with this book
The absorbing subject matter of this book, presented through catchy rhymes and alliteration and strong, colorful illustrations, has completely captured the imagination of my four-year-old.For three days now, he's been "Juan" almost exclusively, following ants to a vein of "the very best clay, all squishy and white," pretending to make vessels for every conceivable purpose, and peppering me with questions about Mexico, pottery-making, and Juan himself.I've had to draw the line at cutting my hair for paintbrushes and gathering the "dried cow manure" left by the neighborhood dogs."The Pot That Juan Built" appeals to pre-schoolers' burgeoning interest in rhyme and other aspects of language; making things out of simple materials; and the world around them generally.I give it my highest recommendation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Beautiful Book!
I'm appalled at the lack of love for this book!I am a teacher of a 3rd grade classroom in California where my children are learing about how humans use the world around them to create their life and build their culture. This book is a perfect tie-in to this concept. The illustrations are beautiful and I found the rhymes to be intelligent and descriptive. Two thumbs up from me, and 48 thumbs up from my class!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Celebration of Art
When fall comes, so do the books. It is approximated that almost 2,000 children's books will be printed this fall.Of this mass number, perhaps ahandful--a very small handful-- are actually worth reading to a young childnight after night.Bijou Le Tord's A Blue Butterfly: A Story about ClaudeMonet, is part of this handful.5-0 out of 5 stars Monet appreciation for children!
I have always been bedazzled by Monet's painting and his home, Giverny. This book is another wonderful way to share Monet's gifts with youngchildren. As a first-grade teacher, I appreciate the ideas suggested by theteacher below who shared her method for offering Monet toyoung children. An exceptional treasure to enjoy over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely little book, a great intro to Monet for the young
My 5 yr old daughter and I picked this up at the library and what a find! This is a book of delightful watercolor illustrations of Monet out in the field, in a garden, by the sea.The pictures are so pleasant and veryreminiscent of Monet's work, and the few lines that accompany the drawingsare perfect for young children. I heartily recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb art activity book about the Impressionists for kids
The invention of photograph had a profound impact on painting. At the start of the 19th-century the goal of painting was realism, but with a camera that became a moot point.Eventually the art world decided the only rational thing to do was to go in the opposite direction and to find an alternative to reality. The Impressionists represent the first successful movement by paintings to capture the public imagination with "non-realistic" art."Monet and the Impressionists for Kids" not only introduces young readers to Impressionism but also follows up with 21 activities that will allow them to try their hand at painting. These activities are what makes Carol Sabbeth's book stand out from others on the Impressionists in general and Claude Monet in particular, because it is pretty much impossible to be exposed to these paintings and not want to try to do it yourself.5-0 out of 5 stars monet and the impressionists for kids
This is a wonderful book with great ideas to do with kids so that they can get an understanding of the arts through hands on experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars As entertaining as it is educational.
Monet And The Impressionists For Kids is a book filled with 21 fun and educational activities to teach young people more about the classical painter Claude Monet and others in the grand and beautiful tradition of Impressionist art. Gorgeously illustrated in full color, Monet And The Impressionists For Kids features such activities as using colored construction paper to paint reflections, or painting the shimmering sky with watercolors. A wonderful biography and history, as well as a highly educational rainy-day fun book, Monet And The Impressionists For Kids is as entertaining as it is educational and highly recommended for home schooling and classroom curriculum supplementation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Trip into the creative capacity and vision of an artist through the eyes of innocent wonder
In 1988 I begged my Principal(I was a teacher in the Salinas valley) to purchase a set of this book.I taught in the "middle of nowhere " that now holds a good chunk of my heart. This was the time of teaching through literature sets, wholly in love with language, and inspiring children by creating together envirnments to make meaning and to find "context" for learning. It was a time to motivate lives. Toni Ungs, my then Principal, turned to me and replied, no, that I would be the "only teacher" on site who would use the set. And so it goes in teaching, yet another opportunity denied by those thinking within their prodigious logic systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Monet's Garden
I absolutely LOVED this book when I was younger. So, if you're having doubts about your child liking it, I wouldn't...I had the doll of Linnea and I carried it around with me everywhere...and I also brought the book everywhere I could as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good text to suppliment a strong hands-on art program
I used a much older edition of this book in high school (it had a brown cover way back then). This text was good suppliment to the hands-on projects we did in class. It taught about art basics like types of meduim, technique, and touched on artists, famous works, and how to look at art. This is a great text to ensure students develop and hold an interest, love and understanding of art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Greg Tang!
Greg Tang encourages his audience to develop number sense in a lively way. With the help of this and his other books, you can encourage your students to develop a more fluid approach to math. I have used many of his books in my classroom, and find it is best to pre-teach his way of combining number sets before reading the book aloud (just a short lesson).
5-0 out of 5 stars Math and Art - What A Great Combo!
I love this book and have shared it with colleagues! What a great idea to combine math and art, and what a great way to tackle problem solving which is not always a favourite with kids! For teachers, it helps us cover two subject areas at the same time which we greatly appreciate. When I saw the cover of this book, I was instantly intrigued.I liked the fact that it's suitable for all age groups -- older students may appreciate the art history aspect more, but the rhymes appeal to all ages. The illustrations jump out, are appealing and make math more interesting. When I showed this book to some of my students, one instantly said that it was "neat" because everyone came up with a different way of getting the answer yet everyone was right, to which I responded with a delighted smile!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful math/art connection
Bravo, Greg Tang has done it once again! This wonderful book is full of authentic masterpieces which Tang recreates to get us looking at the art in a "math kind of way!"This book is super for all elementary levels, kindergarten through grade five. The focus is on addition, and the many ways we can group numbers to get to a given sum.We love it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Art Fraud Detective
I bought this book for my very bright 10 year old granddaughter's birthday. My friend who is a librarian had bought it for her 12 year old niece and said she loved it and has asked if there are anymore in the series which there are. My daughter taped the answer pages together so she couldn't look at the answers and says that my granddaughter can't put it down. She loves it and I am willing to bet she will ask for the next in the series when she finishes Art Fraud Detective. This book is a great way to foster interest in art and artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art with a twist
This book is a great way to familiarize children (and adults) with some of the greatest artists in history.Searching for clues as to whether or not each masterpiece is a fraud causes one to closely study the pieces in great detail. My daughters love looking at the art and doing the detective work. They usually want to go through several pieces each time we pull this book out.I highly recommend it to people of all ages!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mystery lovers will love this book
My seven-year-old son says that he wished it were more entertaining.I guess I feel somewhat disappointed that he races through to detect clues to determine the frauds without reading the artist write-ups.But it's a good introduction to art history and appreciation and it certainly captivates those who love to read mysteries. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars START EXPLORING(tm) Masterpieces - A Fact-Filled Coloring Book
It's a starter book for the young.I would have liked to have the orginal picture with the color pages, plus the detail is lacking. If you are looking at introducing a kid to the arts this is the book that you need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I just got this book.. very nice and informative, the paintings history and other information is inside but not included the original paintings , so I have no Idea what's the colors of the painting, atleast a thumbnail will do. Other than that it's a wonderful addition to my collections of art books. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Learning Fun
This neat book is a great way to help your child or student learn about art and the great masterpieces (or yourself, if you prefer to use a fun method to teach yourself). Users get to color masterpieces in their own way, and the opposite page gives a brief, easy-to-read-and-understand description of the work of art and artist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Violent - what were they thinking?Good concept, poor choices.
I purchased this book to give as a gift to my nephew. When it arrived, I opened the book to the middle and I could not believe what I was looking at.One of the art scenes is of a battle where a man charging on a horse has been decapitated.Blood is spewing from the headless neck, his necklace is falling in one direction, and his separated head (with a horror/surprise look on his face) is falling to the ground behind the horse. This is very gruesome, and there is no way I could give this as a gift a child of any age.
1-0 out of 5 stars not pleasant
Some of the works of art are lovely, but 2 are too violent for a child to study. In one, a man is being beheaded and another shows a nightmarish scene with a man on fire. Is this the best the author could find? Sure to turn some children away from art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gogh for it!
I wanted something to spark my 6YO son's interest in art. This book sure did. He asked me to read it to him a 2nd time right on the spot. He also spotted a Van Gogh print that I brought home. This is a fine series. I also got the Degas which wasn't quite as interesting but he still liked it. I just ordered Picasso and a few others. Get the Van Gogh and if your child loves it, try some of the others. (I also liked that this mentioned Van Gogh was very depressed once at loving a woman who didn't love him back.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Starry Light....I mean Starry Night
This is what my daughter called the famous painting when I first bought her this book. She is almost 4 and has owned this book for about 9 months and it is regularly a favorite that she likes to read...well, more often she likes to look at the pictures and name the paintings. This is a great intro to art book for young children.I highly recommend as a first book for your little art-lover, or art-lover-to-be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, funny book with good facts and paintings
My daughter read this book for a class report, and we liked the fact that this book coincidentally was written as though it was a child's report about Van Gogh. She was intrigued to find out that Van Gogh sold only one painting in his lifetime, and was not a rich artist. The humor in the writing and illustrations make this book accessible, fun, and informative, and help kids relate the artist's life. The evolution of Van Gogh's painting style beginning with Potato Eaters and the influences on his art are discussed in understandable terms. It was fun to learn that throughout his life, Vincent's best buddy was his brother Theo, even though they fought as siblings often do. The book contains many photos of Van Gogh's actual paintings.Great book. We both recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A juvenile history of Da Vinci with 21 related activites
I have been going through some of the books by Janis Herbert and others than combine history with 21 activities, and as interesting as I have found those volumes to be I have to say I like the ones that deal with artists even more."Leonardo da Vinci for Kids: His Life and Ideas" combines a detailed juvenile biography of the life of the great inventor, military engineer, scientist, botanist, and mathematician who found time to be a great painter and sculptor as well. This was the man who painted the "Mona Lisa" and invented the armored tank, diving suit, bicycle and airplane centuries before they were built. He is also an important figure in what has been the novel that has been at the top of the bestseller list for like the past year.4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, pretty pictures
Knowing little about art, I found this book easy to understand, enjoyable and informative. However, it is too advanced ("boring") for my almost 8 year old daughter. My opinion is that this book would be great for 10 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned as much from this book as much as my students did!
I was surprised to see even one negative review of this wonderful book.I think it can be enjoyed equally by both parent/teacher and child/student.The text is beautifully written and presents all of the facets of this fascinating man. It also places his activities firmly within the context of the politics and society of the Renaissance. The book includes explanations, in language a middle-school child can understand, how flight is possible and how canals and locks work. A wide variety of activities, as well as line drawings, are included to illustrate other key concepts in painting, mechanics, etc.I cannot agree with the reviewer who felt that too few of Leonardo's works were included; I felt it included his most important works, as well as an interesting array of his mechanical, nature and anatomical drawings. As a teacher, I suggest using this book in combination with E.L. Konigsberg's "The Second Mrs. Gioconda"; my students really enjoyed seeing how novelists can use facts as the basis for fiction.I finished this book awed by the range of Leonardo's gifts and both my own daughters (one a reader, one an artist) loved this book for different reasons. But they both came away knowing about and loving Leonardo and that's the important thing!I only wish that this author would do a book on "Michaelangelo for Kids." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully illustrated introduction to the life and art of Diego Rivera
"Diego" introduces the life and art of Diego Rivera, the great muralist from Mexico, to young readers. As the note in the back of the book explains, people all over the world have heard of Rivera because he helped changed the meaning of art.In a world where artists made paintings to hang in museums and galleries, Rivera painted murals in public spaces so that ordinary people could see them as every day.Rivera painted murals all over Mexico, not only palaces and government buildings but also in schools, to show his deep respect for both the common people of Mexico and the working class around the world. All told, Rivera painted about two and a half miles of murals in his lifetime.
5-0 out of 5 stars Viva Diego!
Diego Rivera's biography is told in this superbly illustrated text. The story begins as he is born, and ends many years later after Rivera has become a famous Mexican muralist, however much of the text focuses on Rivera's childhood. The text is written in both English and Spanish on every page. Both languages are written in concise sentences that clearly convey information about Rivera's life and work. Each page also has a brightly colored picture that reinforces the text's message. The illustrations by Jeanette Winter are beautiful, richly colored accompaniments to the colorful life of Diego Rivera. The motifs in them are those typically found in Mexican folk art and include appropriate colors and subjects, often echoing those found in Rivera's work. This is a delightful and age appropriate introduction to an artist whose tempestuous personal life sometimes overshadows his outstanding artistic accomplishments both inside and outside of Mexico. Students who are interested in art or Mexican history will find this book to be a treasure. Native Spanish speakers could use this text in the classroom to share their knowledge of the Spanish language and Mexican culture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Writing a book about Diego Rivera in terms that young children can understand is not an easy task, however this book does a great job. The story is engaging, the pictures are wonderfully colorful, and can hold a kid's attention. I purchased this book when my daughter was only 3 and even though she didn't understand much of the text, she was captivated by the pictures. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to expose a young child to art and artists' lives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars history as cruel as people
a remarkable work israel bernbaum has produced by this book. after having escaped the warsaw ghetto, he fled to the sowiet union and later to paris and in the end went to the usa, he found the courage and the personality to describe the horror and the unbelievable pain in simple words and verystrong pictures. this book, addressed to his children turns out to be anessential for all children anywhere in the world. As a very personal viewat the fate of the tremendous number of jewish people suffering, fightingand dying in the warsaw ghetto, he still ends up without hatred. instead heis pleading for respect against every person regardless of nationality, race, colour or religion. small wonder former president of germany, richardvon weizscker, expressed utmost respect for the book to isarel bernbaum.the book was awarded the german youth book price of the year 1995.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars art lesson
Henry Hammer is the owner of the city's auction house. The night beforebig art sale he learns that some of the paintings are fakes! The reader of this book will have to try and solve the crime by looking closely at the pictures are finding the fakes!
5-0 out of 5 stars Art and Much More
For those who enjoyed Where's Waldo and other "look and find" puzzles, this book takes it a notch higher. On the eve of an art auction, the auction house receives a tip that 16 of the paintings are forgeries. The reader is invited to view the paintings and compare them with the originals to determine the fakes, which gang of forgers are the culprits, and how much money was paid out to the forgers. You can spend hours looking for the mistakes in the paintings and it is enjoyable (and addictive)! For children, and adults, who enjoy art and/or picture puzzles, this is an ideal gift.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not Waste Your Money. Buy Construction Paper Instead.
What a dissapointment! The text is a boring compilation of well known facts. There is no instructional leflet on creating collages as has been claimed in the book description. The art set includes only 6 sheets of construction paper. Get Ernest Ruboff or Mike Venezia books to introduce children to the greatest artists. Boutan's book has no originality to it and should have not ever been published. I have ordered most of the books in Boutan's series of 'activity' books and will be returning all of them. Get a set of construction paper at a dollar store and do not waste your money. There are better choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Activity Pack-Picasso by Mila Boutan
This was a fantastic book! I shared it with my children (ages 7 and 10) and they both enjoyed it. It includes a biography of Picasso and also pictures of his work. It also includes a collage activity. This hasbeen very helpful to me being a volunteer "Picture Lady" at theelementary school. I can share information about the artist and also sharean art activity with the class. There are other artists in the ArtActivity Pack Series as well. I have purchased all of them! They areperfect for sharing in a class or with your own children! Thanks forsuch a great series, Mila! My only question is, will there be more artistsincluded in the series? ... Read more

As an elementary school teacher, I incorporate the whole languagephilosophy into my classroom.I spent an entire month linking thecurriculum of my school district to Ms. Ann Whitford Paul's literature.Mystudents learned about math, science, social studies and reading using"Quilts" as our theme. We created individual quilt squares torepresent each of my 33 students and I lovingly sewed them together.
