5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book/CD set
We are so happy to have received Philadelphia Chickens as a shower gift. While our 10-month old doesn't understand the lyrics, he clearly enjoys the music, bouncing and smiling whenever he hears, "Cows, we're remarkable cows....."The songs are very enjoyable for adults as well.I've given this as a gift to 3 friends and all have loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase!
Thanks for the great books.I bought two of the same from this owner. Both were new and in terrific condition. The CDs were perfect as well. Thanks!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My child LOVES this!
We listen to this CD almost every day in the car. She's 2 yrs old now but we started listening to it at 1 year I think. She loves the "cow" song and used to ask for it every time we got in the car! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very short book
Due to the shortness of this book, my daughter prevailed upon me to read it more often. It's very cute though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for little ones!!!
My 8 months old son loves this book and mostly at nightime. He'd rather this one than the other ones. Everytime when I start the song, he gets fascinating. The illustrations are great and catch my son's attention .......He Loves it!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for nightime reading!
My 11 month son loves this book! I read it to him almost every day before puttign him to bed. As I read the book, we imitate the gestures from the illustrations which he loves. I am only giving 4 stars because it's a short book, however I usually read it with a few other books before bed time, to make it up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the lipstick!
My four year old loves the Olivia books, and we couldn't wait to get this one.We laughed the whole way through, especially when she put on the lipstick.Hooray for Olivia!

1-0 out of 5 stars Olivia Mails It In (or Falconer Mails It In) Your choice.
My son enjoys the Olivia series immensely. "Missing Toy" and "Saves The Circus" are on their second copies at my house due to the wear and tear of the originals. We looked forward to "Forms A Band" and were delighted to finally get it at our local bookstore. Disappointed at the results puts it mildly. It is a disjointed mess, with a terrible ending (and if the end is political message, that is just awful and inappropriate)Olivia has lost her edge which is why we love her and the imagination scenes showed none, which is unusual for this series. Ours lasted two reads before it was pushed aside for one of the vibrant other Olivia books. I would buy this book only to complete a collection and nothing more. It is terrible. I would give it 0 stars if I could.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for adults, too!
We received this CD for a gift a year ago and my kids(4 1/2 and 13mo) and I still BOTH enjoy hearing it!Fun, catchy tunes, with a bit of humor for adults, and silliness for kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wholesome family entertainment we can ALL sing along to!
Despite some unevenness , this album and its accompanying book are a drive-time hit in our household - amazing considering my kids are 10 and 11 - oh, and a baby, who probably doesn't get all the subtleties, but enjoys the music nonetheless.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the seriously silly
This is first rate music for adults and kids.It is Disney quality family fun.Great music that kids and the kid that lives inside each one of us can enjoy.I still find myself singing some of the lyrics from the Turkey Love Song and Tropical Sands (particularly since I live in Alaska)..... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AIR GUITAR HEAVEN FOR MY 5, 6 & 8 YEAR OLDS. THEY LOVE THIS CD/BOOK - ROCK ON!
I almost can't believe that some reviewers are so critical. My kids don't know the writer/illustrator from a hole in the wall -- but I have to re-play the Bacon Brother's "Pots and Pans" and that other hot rockin' tune that has something to do with broccoli(eieieieie!) over and over.My three kids have formed their own backseat air guitar/drums/whatever band, they've memorized the lyrics, they're getting along and, when I gaze back at them, they're NOT brain frozen, dull eyed focussed on a little screen tv watching a video.Movin' and Groovin', baby.I love it, so do they. ROCK ON, DOG TRAIN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rejoice, Boomers.Rock 'n' Roll is hear!
Tired of listening to your G'childs "Wee-sings" & Raffi? Do we really have to listen to these again...& again & again
5-0 out of 5 stars Great sequel!
This book delivered exactly what I expected from a sequel to Philadelphia Chickens and Rhinoceros Tap (as well as Pigorian Chants). The kids just love it and the songs and music are good to listen to for adults as well. While they can be silly, they are contemporary and inspire, rather than grind on your nerves like some other kids song books. Definitely worth a look and listen many times over. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there for the 5-9 age group.
Up until now there has been a lack of guitar instruction books for children ages 5 to 9. Mel Bay's Children's Guitar Method is too difficult. Hal Leonard's Guitar Method is really for kids 12 and older as is Belwin's 21st Century Guitar Method. This book is perfect for the very young and I highly recommend using a 1/2 size guitar.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for small kids
This book gets the kids playing right away with no time wasted on theory that a small child could not comprehend. The CD makes the playing more fun and feel more "grown-up". Nice book! Both the 7 year old and 5 year old are enjoying using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This is a beautiful, colorful book that really draws your child in just because it looks so fun! I'm so happy that they made a beginning guitar book like this because I've found that usually only piano gets so much attention. I've played guitar since I was nine, and have a Masters degree in Music. Guitar is a wonderful instrument to learn. You can take it with you anywhere and you can accompany yourself singing. You can also learn classical guitar easily if you start young and people will love to listen. I think more kids should learn guitar at a young age. Hopefully this book makes that possible!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, BUT....
I play violin & viola and purchased this book for a lesson plan for one of my education courses. The only "issue" you could say, that I have with this book is the example that is given for the viola track.45 seconds of a concerto that makes it sound like a violin (the Bartok finale!).They could have chosen a better clip to use (like say the Telemann). haha!Maybe I'm a bit bias.
5-0 out of 5 stars Story of the Orchestra
An engaging and entertaining way to teach children about individual musical instruments and the four families of instruments.

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked, not as planned, but worked
I bought this CD for my 9 year old nephew and I have to be honest that he hated it.BUT it still worked, I told him to learn them and we'd quit listening to the CD and he learned at lightening speed just to get away from it.The tunes can be a little folksy but I thought it was a good way to learn and it does stick in your head.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids!
My child has a processing disorder which make math extremely difficult. She has always been able to learn song lyrics easily, and this CD was no exception.Kids in 2nd grade can get a great start to 3rd grade math by learning to count by multiples of numbers 2 through 12.I would definitely recommend to all kids, especially those who like music, but not learning basic multiplication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously helpful as teaching tool, besides being fun!
This piece of music by Britten has always been, for me at least, the finest teaching tool in the world of classical music. Even for teaching oneself about the instruments of the orchestra (and especially using the CD alongside) it is just unbeatable. A superb and very easy piece of music to listen to, it is also ingenious, easy to follow and quite memorable to boot. The main theme is great and all the little solos show off the seperate instruments beautifully. You simply cannot get better than this anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality, Educational and Fun Entertainment
Money well spent! Good quality music on the enclosed CD, nice explanations and illustrations in the book. This book will introduce you / your children to the instruments and history of orchestra music in an entertaining fashion.

    Editorial Review

"The STRINGS all soar, the REEDS implore, / The BRASSES roar with notes galore. / It's music that we all adore. / It's what we go to concerts for." In this exuberant tribute to classical music and the passionate, eccentric musicians who play it, author Lloyd Moss begins with the mournful moan and silken tone of one trombone. A trumpet sings and stings along, forming a duo, then a fine French horn joins in, "TWO, now THREE-O, what a TRIO!" The mellow cello ups it to a quartet, then ZIN! ZIN! ZIN! a violin soars high and moves in to make a quintet. The flute that "sends our soul a-shiver" makes a sextet, and "with steely keys that softly click," a sleek, black, woody clarinet slips the group into a septet. We move on! A chamber group of ten!And the orchestra is ready to begin. Moss should be congratulated for creating a playful, musical stream of rhyming couplets that seamlessly, slyly teaches the names of myriad musical groups. I'll admit, I was not crazy about this one at first but my child loved it from the beginning. This is a great way to expose your kids to music and a number of different instruments beyond drums, guitar and piano. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!

Music and counting go hand in hand and this book does a great job of entertaining the reader while teaching. You will learn about several musical instruments and the names of musical groupings from solo to orchestra. The illustrations are gorgeous. This is a fun and refreshing book. As a parent and avid reader, I never tire of reading this one. This is definitely in my top 10 new classic favorites. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two Babies Enjoy This One, and Are Inspired to Play!
Annie Kubler's ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT is a great little book. We have had this book for about a month at my house, and my 10-1/2 month old baby and a good friend who is about 22 months old both enjoy this book a lot.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Toddler's Favorite!
I bought this book for my son when he was about 12 months old.It immediately became his favorite book...he loved for me to read/sing it to him before bedtime. He's now 20 months old and still has me singing it to him almost everyday. He loves to flip the pages with me and study the drawings of the babies. The art work is absolutely wonderful. He usually only goes for books with real life pictures, but this one is an exception. When I first picked up this book I thought, "Doesn't this song only have 2 verses...it might get old real quick."But I was pleasantly surprised to see there was much more to it...we love sharing the new verses to this old favorite with other kids...they love it too!

Something strange is happening in New York City and all over the world. Garbage is piling up, dogs are running away from cats (and rats) and people are being bitten on the subway by other people. Despite all this a band is born, hoping to break into the big time before civilization breaks down and there is no one left to appreciate them.

Vampires really do exist. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story Where A Teen Band Takes On Vampires
Strange things are happening in New York City. Stranger than usual, that is. In fact it is down right scary in a paranormal kind of way. Black liquid spurts out of fire hydrants; rats, more numerous than ever, are roving the streets; and people suddenly go crazy, like the woman who throws all of her belongings out her sixth floor apartment window all the while screaming about who knows what. One about-to-be-discarded object catches the attention of two teen onlookers. The crazy lady waves a mid-seventies Fender Stratocaster with gold pickups and whammy bar. Pearl and Moz, strangers until this moment, work together to catch this valuable guitar before it crashes to the pavement. A quick glance above and both glimpse human figures moving swiftly towards the crazy woman's window. Neither comments aloud on this phenomenum. Instead they excitedly talk about their passion for music and the possibility of forming a band.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Magic Flute
I'm usually dismissive of most Die Zauberflotes because I find the overall quality of the singers and recording lacking. Then I came upon this recording...I have to say that it is simply the most amazing Die Zauberflote I've ever heard! The orchestrations to the singers to the conductor himself...everything is mind-blowing!I'm not a Mozart person, but if I really like a recording of his I will buy it.This is an excellent way to introduce yourself to the Flute, especially since there is such a wonderful introduction accompanying this extremely famous opera. And the Queen of the Night-Edda Moser!!!Amazing!Simply amazing! No other Queen has conveyed that much drama into her singing. This is the Flute.I would suggest Marriner's version if I hadn't seen this one, but then here is a Flute with all the greats in it!Get it now!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn about opera, suitable for young or old.
I received this as a gift from a mislead but well-meaning relative. Needless to say, I have never been a fan of opera. However, I was surprised that I was actually able to enjoy this book and accompanying CD. The book begins with a brief biography of Mozart, and then offers a prose overview of the story (extremely helpful for understanding!). The second half of the book contains the libretto, or text, of the opera. The original German forms one column on the left-hand side of each page, and the English translation is printed on the right. This way one can follow along with the story while listening to the music, even if you don't know a word of German. Throughout the entire book there are pictures from different stage performances of The Magic Flute. The musical recording is of high quality, contained on two disks that fit into pockets on the inside front and back cover of the book.5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story-telling
    P. Craig Russell's drawing style seems especially apt for stories of enchanted lands and beings. His lines are light and airy, and he sets a mood nicely with color. In other words, he is ideally suited to illustrate this story.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Spectacular Story!
I really enjoyed this story!!Hart Evans is a very popular sixth grade student at Palmer Intermediate. One afternoon he found himself landed in the principal's office after deciding to launch rubber bands at Mr. Meinert, the chorus director. After some convincing, the principal decided on a light punishment for Hart. This angered Mr. Meinert and therefore led to his decision to turn the Holiday concert planning over to his students. After all, Mr. Meinert had nothing to lose; his position would be terminated after the holiday break due to budget cuts.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Last Holiday Concert
I would recommend this book to boys or girls around the age of 10. This book is very good. I enjoyed reading it. I like the way Andrew Clements writes, and I know all of my friends do too. It may be a little confusing to people younger then 10, but it is a great book and I encourage people to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll like this story!
Mr. Meinert's job was about to end.He was the sixth grade chorus director. Hart Evans, a student, shot a rubber band at Mr. Meinert but he didn't mean to. All he was trying to do is get attention by shooting a rubber band to the ceiling. Hart thought chorus was boring. Mr. Meinert got fed up with bad behavior. He put the kids in charge of the upcoming concert. The concert was going to be a holiday concert. They had an election to see who would be in charge of the concert. The students could pick anybody in the room.Hart Evans was chosen. It was a rough start. There was a big variety of performance ideas to choose from. They had to vote again for what they were going to do for the concert. They finally picked. They did some pretty interesting performances!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
I highly recommend this book for anyone who teaches singing- especially those who work with groups of inexperienced singers.Phillips goes a long way in demystifying singing technique and causes for singing problems as well as providing ideas for remediation in older inexperienced singers. The fact that Phillips approaches singing in a very objective manner makes singing an attainable skill for anyone who is willing to put in the physical work. The exercises in this book are intended for group use and when used consistently they really work! Many people ask me how I get my 4th and 5th grade boys to sing so willingly and I really think a lot of it has to do with the information that I have taken to my music classroom from this book. Some of the exercises may sound a little silly at first, but give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall approach to effective vocal production in youth.
This book explores the history behind American vocal training, describing how different attitudes towards school singing has affected the choral sound as we know it today. The author also effectively presents how singing is a psychomotor process, and one that is not always easily taught or learned. He reviews the vocal parameters of younger and developing voices, and explains the difficulty with the adolescent voice change (especially with boys). He also encourages teachers to express singing as a "sport", one that requires physical involvement of the body! The second half of the book is dedicated to 90 specific exercise methods for teachers to use in developing their choir. He has broken it into three age levels so that teachers anywhere within the grades 1-12 spectrum can use it effectively, or just use it to supplement a program they may already use and like. The exercises develop repiration, phonation, resonance, diction, and expression within choirs.Eighteen wonderful vocal exercises are explained for each of these areas. This would make an excellent reference book for any music teacher who is involved with teaching singing to any age level. The exercises are specific and help coordinate the students' overall approach to singing. ...
