5-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbprints up for this book!
Love this little book! My 3 year old son hasmade pictures with his fingerprints at his preschool. This isa great way for children to express themselves by making their fingerprints into any number of little animal or other creatures. I bought this book for us to make projects with at home. I thought it would be great for his little thank you notes to relatives. My son loves this book. If you decide to buy this book, you will not be dissapointed. I also enjoyed using this myself as an adult.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD STARTING PLACE FOR KIDS TO DRAW
I purchased this book to use in two art camps. One was focused on printmaking and the other on cartooning.Once students open the book they were eager to try out the fingerprint illustrations and began looking for particular animals they wanted to illustrate. The book is colorful and appealing and provides a good starting place for kids to draw with ready success 'at their fingertips.' The only problem we encountered was the need for fine line marker for details as their fingerprints are small and their drawings were less successful if the marker they used was too thick or bled.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 5 yo daughter LOVED this book.
We gave my 5 yo daughter this book, some washable kid's ink pads and a sketchbook this weekend for her 5th birthday. She LOVES it.She drew some pretty amazing pictures last night with just a little help to work through the steps.I'm sure she'll be creating masterpieces all on her own in no time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Styles of the Great Masters
This book is a great quick overview of the great masters of art history. The projects are easy enough for more elementary and middle school kids.Only criticism would be more bio on each artist and what their specific contricution to the development of Western art was.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent hands-on projects for children...
I was excited about this book before I even opened it, and having read through it and planned several projects for our homeschooled kindergartner and preschooler, I am even more excited! This book covers pretty much every possible art form and gives great background information on the artists represented, without being so much information that it would be boring to a child. The projects are creative and all of them look like great fun. This is one book that I feel was worth the money (so many craft books end up being an "I could have thought of that on my own" experience!).My only disappointment with this book is that the illustrations are other children's artwork and there are no examples of the artists' actual work. However, I am sure we can find all we need to supplement this book just by looking on the internet. All in all, this was a great buy and I am very excited to use this book with my children for several years to come!I give it five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great hands on book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for HS students, too!
I'm a high school art teacher and I recently saw this book at the local library.I'll soon be ordering it as a resource for my classroom because it's got a lot of good, basic information and an easy-to-understand format that's very similar to the way I introduce drawing techniques to my Art 1 students.I'm impressed!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for adults, too
If you are an adult who never learned fundamentals of drawing, this book is great. It demystifies shading and perspective, in a way that no other book or instructor has been able to get through to me. The exercises are basic and easy to practice, with an economy of words. This book is also perfect for children.

Jewel and Gem Goop. Make-it-Yourself Stickers. Tornado in a Bottle. Funny Putty. Fruity Lip Gloss. Magic Muck. Snow Globe. Scratch& Sniff Watercolors. Believe it or not, it's possible--easy, infact!--to make every one of these "wacky, wild, and crazy concoctions" (and 57 more) using common household ingredients. John E. Thomas and Danita Pagel have pulled together the cream of the crop of potions, clays, and all-around weird swills for the pleasure of children and scientists of all ages. Why not introduce the very youngest artist of the house tothe world of art with Puddin' Paint? Is there a geologist in the house?Make an Instant Volcano--begins with a fizz, then erupts in a bubblingflow of lava. Time for a bath? Try Bathtub Finger Paints--bathers andthe tub will get clean at the same time! These truly amazingconcoctions are not mess-free, but they guarantee hours of absorbed, lively, creative fun, and inspiration for a lifetime of imaginativeendeavors. Brief scientific explanations would have been a welcomeaddition, but maybe young readers will be motivated to explore thechemical, physical, and geological origins of these experiments ontheir own. Adult supervision is recommended for all projects. (Ages 5and older) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kids Concoctions I
I have been looking for this book for a while now.Very happy with it.Lots of new ideas. Some repeats, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book!
Good book! But we need to add a little less glue for the Funny Putty, and we didn't make Kookie Creepies right. We made the Instant Watercolors and they worked great. I think Gooey Gunk would work too. It'sjust like the concoction "oobleck" only with a different name.

Editorial Review

Believe it or not, the first known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books--but only for adults. In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children's stories with movable flaps of paper. The rest, as they say, is history. Now aspiring paper mechanics (creative engineer-artists who create dimensional and movable books, otherwise known as pop-ups) can learn the how-tos and wherefores of this marvelous craft. From tip-ons to dummies to glue knock-outs, all the intricacies of pop-up production are outlined and explained.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers lots more than it promises.
This, as the title says, shows a variety of elementary paper popups - the cute little folded thingies in books and cards that stand up when the page is opened. The book's a real strength that it includes an actual, working specimen of each structure it describes. Except for one or two demonstratons, the popup folds never pass the basic, and never show the incredible breadth of artistry that can go into the best of popups. Still, it's readable and gives you an unambiguous idea of how the finished product will look, work, and be assembled. From that point forward, combining ideas, adapting them to your application, and decorating the paper surface are all up to your creative expression.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Pop ups
I was thrilled with the book. It was just what I wanted and will be a great tool for my artwork. The othe Pop Up book I ordered is the perfect complement to this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The strength of this book lies in its website
Elements of Pop Up is one of the few How To Make Pop-Ups books that features patterns for moving parts like wheel/tab mechanisms, which is why I purchased it. However, don't expect to be able to create anything extrememly fancy with this one. The examples are made of simple shapes that expect the user to expand upon them as necessary--this can be a detriment when you're trying to figure out how to alter the pattern to make something more complicated. The most useful part of the book, ironically, isn't even in the book: it's online at www.popupbooks.com, Carter's website. In the Surprise section, one can download all the patterns for making every example shown. Don't pass up buying the book, though. You'll most likely need Elements of Pop Up at your side to figure out how to assemble all your cut out pieces correctly. If you'd rather follow instructions and complete specific projects, I'd recommend Carter/Diaz's other book, Let's Make It Pop-Up! (ISBN 0-689-86508-2), which has pre-printed pictures and contains projects like Blooming Flower and Huggy Bear. ... Read more

Hi!!The book is wonderful for beginers. It helps you get the basic right.Almost all aspect are covered so that you can start sketching cars on your own like side view,3d view.Gives detail information for drawing tyres. This book has helped me a lot and I would recommend this book to everyone without any hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never knew I could draw
I bought this book for myself as a 37th B-day gift and realized after all those years.... I can draw!!! : ) My wife swears I've taken art before but I haven't. After drawing 2 cars I used the techniques to draw a car out of another book and it looks good. I am my toughest critic and I like what I see. I bought 2 other books which cost more and they don't teach you half as much as what you learn with this book. I wish someone had given me this for my 9th B-day. Good luck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok for adults
It's rather difficult to grasp what the author is talking about, due to the fact that she does not include very many details on how to put the characters together, or how much clay to use. It's pretty difficult for kids since the projects are very specialized and involve A LOT of clay for anyone who's not a "professional" hobbyist. It's good for getting ideas or checking the basics but I would not recommend this book for the projects or fora novice, like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
My Daughter loves to draw and she loves this book!!! She is 8 and this was perfect would recommend again!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor book
Since I ordered this for a young budding artist, I was willing to wait awhile until it shipped. What a disappointment - this book is not at all what I expected - I imagine I should have been warned by the price. There is almost no instruction about drawing horses - the pictures are pretty but they will not help in actually learning to draw horses. One star is almost overly generous for a "learning" book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is supposed to teach you how to draw?!
This book is pathetic. It has almost no instructions, only not-very-realistic horse drawings on each page. If you want a great horse drawing book, check out "Anyone Can Draw Horses." This book uses non-conventional methods, such as sketching the basic skeleton to get the horse's shape correct. It never ONCE tries to make you use circles and other geometric shapes. (I don't know about you, but this never works for me! The drawing just gets disproportionate!) However, if you like the circle method, try "Draw 50 Horses." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Proof Of This Book
I am now 26 years old but as a child, I had at least 4 of Ed Emberley's books and my mother would take my brother and I to the library to check out those we didn't have.
3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty complex
I bought this book for my 9 year old step-daughter. She loves art and drawing. I also got the Ed Emberley book of animals, which is great. This book seems cluttered and the drawings are much more difficult. The reading level says 9-12, but I'd say its the upper end of that range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween Fun
All of Emberley's books are wonderful. The Big Orange Drawing book specializes in things that are orange so a lot of it is Halloween themed. I loved working through these books as a child and still have some of the Halloween decorations I made from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars learn to draw the easy way
This book is from a series of 4 books from Emberly are the easiest books on drawing there are, period. Anyone young or old can learn to draw some great critters and vehicles from these books. ANYONE! These are a great first step. All of his Big Color books are great, (They are a series, each named after a color). Famous for the easy way it shows you how to draw step by step, what appears to be a complex Haunted House, but it is simple when you do it his way. This book includes a number of fun ideas including robots, tiger, military ships, Halloween holiday drawings, and more. He even shows you how to make yours unique rather than a copy of his drawings. You can be the doodle hero of your classroom or office after using this book. He does it simply using very simple steps, lines, and basic shapes to start you off. My favorite in the series would be the Purple Book, because I am partial to the pirate ship instructions.5-0 out of 5 stars ~*~ Ed Emberley is the man ~*~

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful how-to book
I am a teacher and used some of the examples from this book to teach a class of kindergartners the art of papel picado. The instructions are easy to follow, and the results are just beautiful. It's fun for the children and adults alike.
5-0 out of 5 stars CREATIVE MAGIC FOR ALL AGES
Absolutely one of the best how-to, interactive books I've ever had the pleasure of working through - and I'm not exactly artistically gifted.Carmen Lomas Garza has compiled a series of papel picado/cut-paper art projects with excellent instructions on folds and cuts, the elements ofdesign, and the tools and materials needed to make successful papel picadobanderitas/banners.Strong on helpful hints and technique, this bookallows you to learn as you go through so that you can add real variety toany cut-paper project whether it be the simpliest or the most complex.Mysister and I got together a small group - 3 adults & 2 youngsters - andtotally enjoyed creating several papel picado projects.Hands down, TheFan, was the overwhelming favorite of our little group of novice banderitamakers.Filled with 8 great scissor projects and several challengingX-acto knife picados, Making Magic Windows is creative, interactive fun forthe whole family!Explore it for yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great inspiration for young artists.
The easy to follow steps have truly inspired my 7 year old. He's been drawing nonstop since we bought the book. The incredible images have helped him learn to add details to his drawings. He is a Deltora fan but I would recommend this book for any dragon and monster lover. ... Read more

I have both 1 and 2 and I'm happiest with the 2nd.Loads of great ideas for projects to keep the grandkids entertained and informed.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
Ordered this series 12-10-2006 using a gift certificate. As of 6-1-2006 this book still has not been processed or shipped. The book may be awesome as the reviews state, but after 5 months of contacting Amazon and waiting for the shipment, I forfeited the remainder of the gift certificate and cancelled the order for this book. What a disappointment!Good books offered, but terrible service and poor delivery on Amazon's part.I do not plan to purchase through Amazon again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, interesting art!!
My 8 year old daughter received this as a Christmas gift five months ago, and it is wonderful! It's challenging but attainable drawing. Too often, art books are WAY too "kiddy" and cartoony with too little flavor, or way too complicated and mature. This is great for my daughter- it's neither *kiddy* nor too mature. She is a self-motivated artist, and I have seen a definite improvement in her skill from her trying to emulate the style and forms in this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not anime
First of all it should be titled "Kids draw Manga" not "Kids draw Anime" because Anime and Manga are different and what this book teaches is considered as manga but anyway this wouldn't even be considered manga or anime because it's just way to bad and crappy. I mean don't even waste your time or money with this book, better yet go find it at your local library. I love to draw manga and anime and when I flipped through this book me and my friends, we were pissed off because it's an embarrassment. So not beginners or anyone above that. This is mainly for kids under the age of 7 or something.

2-0 out of 5 stars anime?!
I just to a glips this book and I look at it andthought "anime?!" the answer was no. It was to cartoony.Yes it's a could book to draw cartoons but not anime. For instance look at Salior moon, Rayearth or Yu-gi-oh then look at this book do the look a like? If you want to learn real anime don't get this book you could get better ones for less. THIS IS A NOTE IF YOUR THINKING ABOUT GETTING ANY OF HIS MANGA MANIA BOOKS when you see the great art on the front it isn't his he hires people to do a whole chunk of the book and the front and back of the book for him then like only a small amount is his work and on the front of the book it says the book was by him. What did he do besides put no-anime charaters in it?! That's what I'm still trying to find out.

This book has so many terrific, easy to follow, and imaginative ideas. The eye popping illustrations help as a visual aid to see what the end result may look like.I use many of the ideas for teaching middle school students as well as elementary.A must have for any art teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!
Like all the Usborne books, this book is a great tool for learning. As an elementary teacher, I bought this book just to have as a handy reference.I have also used it with my kids at home, and it is everything I learned in a semester of college art class all rolled up into this handy children's book. With all my experience with Usborne books, I just can't get enough of them. For more information on Usborne books, visit ...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Solid book
This book in not bad. It has a solid well written structure to it. The chapters are sequentialy based. But; you can dive into ANY chapter at a moments notice and glean LOTS of information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch
After reading several books on the subject, I honestly feel that this is the best when it comes to get a good feel for the industry and the genre. It is not too wordy, as some on the topic, but it is not too skimpy either.I really feel I learned something from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kids' Stuff
I found this book to lack depth and good art examples. The design isn't that great either. It throws a couple bits of jargon to feel impressive, but there isn't a lot of good information here. Some examples:
