1-0 out of 5 stars boring, plotles, dull
I, Like many other unfortunate youth, had to read this book for school and do journal responses for each chapter. I did the assingnment with little difficulty without finishing the book. It was that predictable! I only read the first two chapters before I could do the responses with little trouble.
5-0 out of 5 stars My brother sam is dead
Over the summer I read My brother sa is dead by James luneden Collier and Christopher Coliier. As one of my favorite books, there was many things i liked about I found interesting. When reading this book, you forget about reality and you start to feel as if you were in the story yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Spark an Early Interest in History
James Lincoln and Christopher Collier's story "my brother Sam is dead" begins at the dawn of the Revolution, a time when Loyalists felt much the same as Mr. Beach's remark to Sam in Chapter 1: "I think men of common sense will prevail. Nobody wants a rebellion except fools and hotheads." Doubtful or unaware of just how focused and set on independence from the Crown of England the Rebel militia actually were, the loyalists or tories of Colonial America were caught off guard when they realized "Live Free or Die" was more than a motto is was a commitment.

4-0 out of 5 stars annoying voice, but good songs
if you can get past the female vocalist's singing voice (which my husband disparagingly refers to as church singing), this is actually a very nice collection of songs. most are familiar western children's melodies, like 'old macdonald', 'mary had a little lamb', and 'london bridge' with korean lyrics. some of these lyrics are translations of the english lyrics, but others are not. the remainder of the songs are traditional korean children's songs that i remember singing when i was little. the best thing is that my [...] daughter is actually picking up some korean from these songs and she loves to listen to the CD, which is a full 45 minutes of entertainment. definitely recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
My kids LOVE this book! And the CD is one of the best I've heard for kids.My two (ages 4 & 7) are singing the songs, especially the title song (w/all its verses) constantly. The illustrations inthis book are also amazing. This book would make a really nice gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Land is Your Land with CD
The art in this book is phenomenal and draw young and old into the book.I think that every time one looks at any of the paintings one will find something new to see. The lyrics, of course, are pure poetry.I am pleased that the original verses are restored. The only thing I did not like was that the song of This Land is Your Land does not match the order the lyrics are written in the book, so you can't enjoy both at the same time. However, it is not important enough to make me give this book a lower rating. The other songs included on the CD are also masterful and are extremely popular at the preschool I work in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless lyrics and beautiful illustrations!
Take one look at this book and you will realize how much thought, time, and effort was put into its creation. I read this book to my class of four and five-year-olds on the last day of a unit in which we discussed America's landscape, its folk music, and what makes our country unique. What better song to sum it all up than an American classic such as this? They loved it! I sang the verses to them and they joined in on the chorus. I can't remember the last time a book captivated them the way this one did! And to make things even better, the CD comes with, not one, but NINE songs performed by Woody Guthrie and Arlo Guthrie, all of which are lively, memorable, and downright wonderful children's songs. My students, as well as the other teachers, thoroughly enjoy the music. This book and CD are an extremely valuable tool for the classroom as well as the home. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ooops! She did it again
J.K Rowling has pulled off another stellar Harry Potter. Because the amount of time it takes to complete a 7-part series, I thought she'd run out of steam, but clearly she has not. After seeing what happened with King towards the end of the Dark Towers series, I was afraid another renowned writer might do the same. I was pleasantly disappointed. There is nothing else to say. Great book. She keeps the series rolling perfectly. Some of the goings on (people who've read the story should know what I'm talking about) I believe are front for other plans, and I was not heart broken at the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars Harry's Daring Quest
Harry Potter and Professor Dumbledore try to research Lord Voldemort's childhood. They search through the pensieve discovering the truth about Lord Voldemort. They realize the rutheless, evil wizard splits his soul into seven pieces by murdering seven innocent people. Then he magicallyhid them into valuable objects, which Harry and Dumbledore set after for. I loved the book because the story line was thrilling and intriguing. The characters were daring, intelligent, humorous, and wise. My favorite character is Harry Potter who is a sixteen year old wizard who's parents died because Voldemort murdered them both. Harry is my favorite character because he is brave and humorous. Some related books to this one are all five of the other Harry Potter books. I think this book ranks number one in comparison to them all.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book series stinks! And that's flattering.
One star is giving this terrible and uninteresting series a huge compliment. Especially this book, where the plot consists of little but pointless stories of the character's love lives until the end, when there is a quick bit that is actually about Good vs evil. If Harry can be called good. beyond this words cannot describe my disgust for this book and for the whole series. Hope Harry dies. Painfully. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Esperanza Rising
Esperanza Rising was a pretty good book. This book was basically about a Mexican girl who use to be rich but became poor. They lived on a huge ranch and owned a grape orchard. Sadly the night before her birthday Esperanza's father dies. After her father dies, her evil uncle takes over the ranch, and her and her mother become servants. The only way they could still live in their house was if her mother was to marry her brother inlaw. Esperanza's mother new that if she married him they wouldn't live a very good life. So now that they became servants they had to sneak from the ranch . They get in the back of a wagon and begin their journey to their new home. When they get there they go to their very small cabin. Esperanza and her mother had to work very hard and momma gets sick. Well I think that I am going to stop there so that I wont give any thing away. I do recommend this book though, you will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It made me cry!
It was such a great book!I could read it over again and again!I can't even imagine someone ever saying that they hated this book.I couldn't stop reading when I started the book.Sometimes I even read it when my Mom was talking to me.This book is very sad and exciting. It made it worth spending most of my time reading it!I would tell every one of my friends about this book and how I think they sould read it.If I was stranded on a deserted island and i could bring any two books in the whole world.I would choose Espeanza Rising and A Judy Blume book!If you like sad, exciting, and beautifuly written books, then this is the one for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars your boys will love girls books after this one gets them hooked on Laura
I have this book to thank for discovering the "Laura series", which somehow, I'd missed in childhood.I read this book aloud to my son, then 9, and he became so interested in pioneer life, that he devoured every other Laura book, either with me reading to him, (or, when he often couldn't wait till our next time together to find out what happened next) his reading it alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book!
I have been reading books since I was 2 years old and this is one of the best books i have read. It dosn't matter who the auther is or how old he is it just matters if you like the book. I'm 12 now and like I said this book is really, really good. The authur did A good job and that is why it is a new york times best seller!
5-0 out of 5 stars Eragon the best
Eragon is one of the best fantasy books I've ever read so far.It has all of the qualities of a fantasy book I look for.Compared to Harry Potter it has a great story line with a quick learning character. It has battles, magic, dragons, and monstrous creatures.Christopher Paolini is one of the best authors I've heard of, because he uses great imagery, awesome descriptions, and he keeps you intrigued through the whole book.I recommend this book to any fantasy lover adult, teen, or child.I do understand that this is one of the best accomplishments among someone of young age. So if you love fantasy or you just want a classic in motion take up Eragon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the hype!
I purchased and read this book just after it first came out to rave reviews and a New York Times Bestseller ranking.I was extremely dissappointed. There is a reason that there are not many well renowned 18 year old authors out there. The writing is poor at best - definitely the work of someone who is just learning the art.The story is entertaining at times, but as many other reviewers have mentioned, it is entirely unoriginal. This book is fine for the younger child but is not in the class of Paul Park's Princess of Roumania, The Golden Compass trilogy or Harry Potter as books that transcend the line between children's and adult literature.I did not read the second book and have no intention of doing so. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The sing along song is OK
THere are so many songs on this CD.MY son only listens to the 1st one.As soon as its over, he wants to hear it again. He's 3 and not yet interested in the other ones.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected or hoped for
This CD is rather a disappointment. It starts off quietly with somewhat hushed voices that I hardly knew it had begun.I have gotten used to the vibrant and joyous toddler cds that this was a surprise and very disappointing considering how exciting the story can be.I like to read Going on a Bear Hunt in a happy exicted voice with little toddlers following along. This is not that story with any of the same excited enthusiasm.I'm sorry i bought this one without hearing any of the tracks first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Has something for all young children ages 2-5
I work with different age groups from 0-5years old.Kids as young as 1 year old enjoy the story telling portion of this cd. I do alot of handplays/body movements which the kids mimic as the story is playing. I use the cd alone and in conjunction with the book.Kids love it either way!

Editorial Review

The evacuation of Jews from Nazi-held Denmark is one of the great untold stories of World War II. On September 29, 1943, word got out in Denmark that Jews were to be detained and then sent to the death camps. Within hours the Danish resistance, population and police arranged a small flotilla to herd 7,000 Jews to Sweden. Lois Lowry fictionalizes a true-story account to bring this courageous tale to life. She brings the experience to life through the eyes of 10-year-old Annemarie Johannesen, whose family harbors her best friend, Ellen Rosen, on the eve of the round-up and helps smuggles Ellen's family out of the country. 5-0 out of 5 stars Number the Stars
Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry is an incredible book. It's 1943 and World War 2 is taking place. Annemarie Johansen, a ten year old girl, and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of the happier times before war. But they can't do anything to stop it. There are German nazis across every street and they are taking the Jewish people to concentration Camps. Ellen is Jewish so Annemarie Johansen and her family just need to find a way how to help out. They pretend Ellen is Annemarie's sister and they also go the next day to where Annemarie's uncle lived, near the sea. One way or another they find a way how to escape from the soldiers and Annemarie's uncle took them to Sweeden, towards freedom, of course, until the war ended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Story of Courage
I came across Numbering the Stars while clearing out a storeroom at the school where I teach.Since I had already read and reviewed The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger by Lois Lowry, I took the book home and read it over the weekend.
4-0 out of 5 stars My review of Number the Stars
Number the Stars takes place during World War II and is about one family's struggle to protect the Jews from the Germans. The main character is Annemarie Johansen. Her best friend, Ellen Rosen, is Jewish. Annemarie and her family try to save Ellen's family and other Jews by smuggling them to Sweden. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A revival of the series!
The previous years of the show has been a little dry. With Blackgaard dead, Jason off doing mission work outside the US, Jack and Johanne happily married, and Eugene and Katrina virtually Ignored, nothing was really happening on the show. Until now :) Kids' Radio is jammed with the singals of a Big Media Giant, someone breaks into Whit's End, a few kids run into a hacker on the Internet, and Jason returns to Odyssey. All of the sudden, things are ALIVE in Odyssey!! The series has abandoned the idea of split-episodes (the contraversial 15 minutes programs of the last few albums) and has started focusing on it's main characters for the last 13 years -- Whit, Tom and Connie. Plus, it's starting to sound fresh again...and few series, Radio-Tv or otherwise, can sound so alive and full of ideas after so long. So, hat's off to the new, Improved Adventures in Odyssey!! Keep it up!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting Better
Unlike the current trend of Adventures in Odyssey where the quality of the shows were going down, this album presents a small promise of a return to the normal Adventures in Odyssey writing. With the introduction of a new villian, and the start of some long term arc episodes, The Big Picture hopefully will mark the upswing in Odyssey writing. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ashley's favorite book
The Hostile Hospital by Lemony Snicket was a great book in my opinion. This book is about three Baudelaires named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. I liked this book because it was an adventure story. This story made me not want to put the book down.My favorite part was when they were running from the shopkeeper of the Last Chance General Store and the mailman that was delivering the paper. They snuck out of the store and got into the V. F. D.'s van.V.F.D means "Volunteers Fighting Disease." I read this book, and I think you should too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Turn of Events.
Dear Reader,
5-0 out of 5 stars Lemony Snicket breaks the formula and succeeds
The first seven books of A Series of Unfortunate Events followed the same formula. The Baudelaire Orphans are with the banker Mr. Poe until he can find a new relative willing to care for the siblings. Things go badly and the evil Count Olaf shows up with another nefarious plan to kidnap the children and somehow steal their inheritance. In the end they get away and Olaf is on the run from the authorities. The ending of The Vile Village changes this. The Baudelaires are on the run, suspected of the murder of Count Olaf despite the fact that he isn't dead and that there is no way they could have committed the non-existent crime. The Hostile Hospital opens with the orphans trying to find a place where they can learn about VFD, the Quagmire triplets, and some clue that will help keep them safe and stop Count Olaf from coming after them ever again. This time there is no Mr. Poe and no new distant relative to live with. Count Olaf is in much less of this book than we have come to expect, though he and his cronies play major roles in instigating the action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artemis Fowl:the arctic incident
Artemis Fowl is set on an estate outside the city of Dublin, Ireland and in Arctic Russia. At the beginning of the book, it is made clear that Artemis' beliefs that his father, Artemis Fowl Senior, a wealthy Irish crime lord, was alive, is correct. When his ship, the Fowl Star, sank in his attempt to bring 250,000 cans of soda to the Russians, Artemis Fowl Sr. was found alive and has been held prisoner for the past two years by the Russian Mafia. At the beginning, the Mafia has decided that it is time to negotiate a ransom for Artemis Senior. The price is very high and the deal is under a timelimit. This would not be a problem except just as Artemis is ready to get going; he is kidnapped by "The People" a race of fairies living underground. It seems that members of the goblin's secret organization, B'wa Kell, have been found with human sources. Since goblins are basically idiots, it becomes clear that someone not remotely related to a goblin is operating the fiendish scheme. Artemis is immediately blamed and is taken prisoner by Holly Short (Holly Short, a captain of the LEPrecon (Lower Elemental Police Reconnaissance) an elite force trained in dealing with the "Mud People" (humans) along with his trusty bodyguard, Butler. After it becomes clear that Artemis is innocent, they are recruited to locate and demolish the goblins connection in exchange for their services in gaining the release of Artemis Senior. Working under enormous time pressure, their task is accomplished, but when Holly and her superior Commander Root, set out to fulfill their part of the bargain, a takeover occurs underground in the land of "the People." Foaly, the tech expert, who is also a centaur, is accused of heading up the revolution. Holly, Julius, Foaly, Artemis Jr., and Butler race against time to save The People from an evil dictator and save the life of Artemis Senior.
5-0 out of 5 stars Artemis Fowl - The Arctic Incident Pleases Both Listener And Reader
After listening to a public library audiobook copy of the first Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl), my children and I were eager to see if there were other books available in the series. We learned that our library did not have subsequent copies, so I hurried to Amazon to see what I could find. We've now purchased and listened to "Artemis Fowl - The Arctic Incident" and have donated it to our public library so others may share in the story. Not only is each book in the series wonderfully written, with fully crafted, believable characters - insofar as fairy-tale characters can be believable - but the audiobook is narrated by one of the most skillful readers I've ever heard.Nathaniel Parker, also the narrator for the first book, is back with his fantastic portrayals of our favorite characters. This book has all the necessary ingredients for enjoyment:comedy, adventure, fantasy - all played out through witty and engaging dialog between easily distinguishable characters. The author, Eoin Colfer, must have been a Monty Python fan too, because some of the lines uttered as asides by a couple of his characters could just as likely have been said by one of the Flying Circus troupe. My family highly recommends this book, in either printed or audio form. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not the best Audio CD of Tolkien's Hobbit
First of all, there are two other Audio books I've listened to. The first is the unabridged reading by one speaker and the other is the abridged production by 5 or 6 UK voice actors, which is the best of all 3.Second, the style of this production (being reviewed) can be annoying. It's almost like the Audio CD of a play instead of a book -- not many Audio Plays on the market, are there?Third, the voice casting doesn't at all match what we've come to expect. After more than 50 years, we have movies, cartoons, video games, and other sources that have shaped our constructs and expectations for these classics to such an extent that we need confirmation of what we already know.Even so, I wouldn't recommend this audio book to anyone, not a new Hobbit reader, and not even to someone lacking all the previously formed expectations. It's just not one of the better Audio Books you might find on the Hobbit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stirring the imagination to new heights
going to keep this short. excellent in all aspects. well acted, sounds, etc. brilliant. only bad thing was when its over. old speech style is great too and have listened to it many times so far since buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars charming and funny
for me, this is a very enjoyable dramatization indeed.True, elderly, humorless, die hard Tolkein fans will probably find it corny - it was, a bit.Sometimes the sound effects are strange and laughable, but what's wrong with laughing?Given that it was recorded nearly 20 years ago you have to give it some leeway for less than perfect sound affects. For the most part I thought the acting was brilliant (save Gandalf, perhaps, whose voice might have better belonged to a man hawking fake Rolexes in central park), especially Bilbo. So, take my advice and give this recording a chance. My guess is you'll have more fun listening to this than listening to a bland but accurate unabridged reading of The Hobbit.Btw, if you have children and want to introduce them to Tolkein, but are reluctant to lay the whole epic at their feet quite yet, this would ideal for them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great family entertainment!
We first heard this story when my children were very young. They loved it so much that we listened to it over and over.Every once in awhile I'd overhear them retelling parts of it, or shouting out "Raspberries!" as Jay does on the tape.It is a truly wonderful, magical, captivating story, which I am now ordering for my nieces and nephews.

5-0 out of 5 stars This tape is so well done that our family is riveted. Great!
