4-0 out of 5 stars Im a bird
Im a bird.Eldest was a really good book, but the 1st book, Eragon, was much better.Eldest had a lot less action, and it took too much time talking about Eragons studies, and less about anything else about the Varden or Dwarves. The side story about Roran, Eragons cousin, was more exciting. As it got further towards the end, it was much more interesting and had more action, and was easier to read.the end of the book made me want to read the 3rd book because it left many things unanswered, like who the third dragon egg will hatch for.It was an overall great book, but not enough action in it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawn, Yawn, Yawn.....
Well, I picked up Eragon because I heard it was pretty good. I was in the need of an original book, so I figured I would give it a try. It turned out ok. I was impressed with the age of the author, but was also dissapointed on how much of his ideas were not original. Still, there was something fun about a jedi dragon rider.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creative and inspiring
I was partly prejudiced when I first picked up Eragon, having read about the authors age of only 15 when he wrote the book. I expected something much more amature than what I read.I was amazed how he spun such a wonderful tale, so wonderfully descriptive, exciting, and created an endearing main character that had many flaws, and LOTS of room to grow.Paolini has a lot of natural talent and has only begun to explore his potential.I hope he will continue writing long after this trilogy is over.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kid's love "Little House" books
I have 5 childern and do not get to read aloud the quanity of books I would like to, so we invest in audio. They can be enjoyed time and time again. My kids play the "Laura" books we own over and over. Great for long car trips or when layed up with illness too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story conitnues...
Little House On The Prairie is a longer read than Little House In The Big Woods and deals more with action and adventture. While the first book seemed to be a guide book on survival in the wild this book is more of a tale with Indians, bush fires and other dangers.Living on the prairie is not the same as living in the big woods, so we do learn some new things about prioneer life and the problems the family faced. In same ways the second book is superior to the first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Illustration of Life on the Frontier
After the Civil War, the Wilder family has decided to make a big move - join the migration to the frontier, from the little cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. The main character and author, Laura, tells about the difficulties and advantages of life on the praire. Even though the journey there is difficult, and, at time, tragic, the family is able to pull through, and arive in the praire of Kansas to make their new life and create their new adventures.

4-0 out of 5 stars I disagree--this book is very useful.
I am attempting to learn German on my own.I'm a native english speaker who has learned a moderate amount of Spanish; I've learned how to learn.I bounced from one "system" of learning to another--tapes, books, etc, and had found nothing useful. They all had greivous flaws:one obsesses over lots of obscure nouns, another fails to provide a reasonable audio track / book material matchup, etc..This system is a bit cumbersome; one must have two books open and the finger on the CD pause button.. but it is workable.. enough so that I'm going to purchase it (it was checked out from a library). The speakers have REAL German accents and reflect what you can expect to hear.Additionally, the situations presented are very poignant.. the phrases you memorize by going through the dialogues are among the most pragmatic I've seen yet.Bottom line:if you are SERIOUS about learning and are willing to WORK for it, this is good material *in my opinion*.This plus a German dictionary and maybe a German computer language program (for all basics like hours, money, numbers, days.. the endless repitition you need to do to " get" the sound and mimic) are all you really need.

2-0 out of 5 stars German the hard way
This method of learning German is not for beginners! Having had previous German study, I was able to understand the concept and process of this course, but with difficulty. There are no English translations on the tapes. The course is more book intensive, and there are two booklets that accompany the tapes. They must both be used simultaneously, which is cumbersome. The rules of grammer are not introduced or discussed; reliance on a separate grammar section is required, and could be understood only by individuals who have had previous study in a foreign language.Sometimes the speakers' voices trail off, and occasionally pronunciation is not distinct. While this is how we will probably hear the language, it is not helpful in the learning process. I think many of us expect to use tapes for learning a language in a more passive way, i.e. in the car.The neccessity to have both books at hand during each lesson makes this kind of learning impractical. ... It's good to know that parents on this sight are changing the words of this book to protect their children from such harsh words....God knows they will NEVER hear anything like this while in school!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones
Yes, we all agree that the language is not what we want our children to speak, but after all we are reading a book. That's it a Book! These books are adored by my children and they know that they are just books telling a story.Isn't that what we read for, to hear a story, to build our imagination and to dream. If we as parents are doing our job, our children should know not to act like books they read, tv shows they watch (how about MTV) or movies they see.Thats what they are stories.I recommend these books highly. For all the nay sayers, I am sure that you guys don't watch anything such as Desperate Housewives, Soaps etc. Perfect as we like to think we are, it is all about making a choice, your choice!

1-0 out of 5 stars Junie's rude and I can't find anyting that redeems her.
Why someone would chose these books is beyond me, especially when there are so many other good choices. Literature has an impact on people and the only impact I can imagine Junie having on others is negative.

They set out on a big charter weekend and catch a monster fish that will go down in the record books. But there is a problem. This fish can't go down in the record books if one of the skippers hooks it, and Mikey hooked it. But Cal somehow bribed Bill to say that he caught it. As the fish went down in the records Mikey became mad.

In the begening of the book, Mikey wakes up ready to go because today is his first day as a deckhand with Bill, his step dad. He isn't ready for the clients that are using the charter boat for three days. Cal and Ernie are two brothers from Wyoming that are up for a big adventure. On their way out, they meet george, the trash guy, and he tells them that the mahi-mahi are biting today, but Cal says he wants somthing bigger. When they get out they see two men going in. Later Cal asks what the foul stench is in the air and Ernie points at the dead whale. Cal and Ernie tell Bill to turn around and go back and that they are never coming to fish in these waters again. 4-0 out of 5 stars Long chapters, great book
I am 1 chapter away from finishing this book, I have to say it has been an experience. Most of my friends wouldn't go near this book because it is so complicated, you really have to hold your breath and read. I have to say though, from my view point, I find the chapters long and exhausting. J.R.R. Tolkien has a very overwhelming sense of writing. But so unique it's story becomes classic. It took me months to read this book, and it will probably take me longer to start the second. I reccommend this book 10+

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic, for a Patient Reader

2-0 out of 5 stars Oh well, I tried...
Many people gush over the LOTR series like they have nothing more to do. Curious, I went to find the first book, being the FOTR, to see what all the hype was about. Now, don't get me wrong. LOTR is good, but not as good as most people actually say it is. Sure, Tolkien created a interesting world full of unusual people. But must he go over every little detail? Sometimes he just keeps describing something for so long, my head starts to hurt and I keep losing my place or reading the same sentence over and over again. His dialogue is bland and there is really no emotion to it. The characters are just as bland as the dialogue. There is no or little character development in this book, despite its size. Characters should be 3D. Not that all of Tolkien's characters are flat. Actually, Bilbo is more 3D than Frodo. The other characters--Well I won't even start. The list is too long. I just fell asleep reading this book. Believe me, I tried really hard to read this book. But I just can't. I admire Tolkien for being able to create a world where fantasy rules, but the writer must be able to control his world freely and realisticly so that we can read it and enjoy it. It is sad to know that LOTR fans point their fingers accusingly to someone who writes something similiar to LOTR, but the book that person wrote is actually better than Tolkien's work himself. ... Editorial Review

Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development isalternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatricpsychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if you work w/ a difficult child
This well-organized, brilliantly thought-out book gives educators and parents a completely different way of thinking about how we lead all children but particularly difficult, abused, angry children. In short order it provides specific tools together with examples of what we can do to create a more peaceful, flexible child who can function successfully in the world and get along with others. The corresponding web site is extremely valuable in conjunction w/ this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Results-when nothing else has worked!
Thank you Dr. Greene, as reading this book has been more helpful to helping me understand my daughter, and has given us more tangible results than any other medication or therapy that we have tried. Things are not completely normal, but after instituting the behavior plan, they are MUCH BETTER. Every child is different, but in our specific case, the information that Dr. Greene presents makes so much sense, and his basket approach has really helped us avoid rages. This is a must read for parents of children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment disorder, Bipolar, ODD, or ADHD. I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Child? The Real Solution May Surprise You!
Frustrated by my son's age-inappropriate temper tantrums, I desperately searched for solutions. [He'd be set off by little things like making a mistake coloring and would rage for 1/2 hour or more ... still at age 6! Maybe this is understandable for a 2 year old, but there was something wrong here...] I approached it psychologically, certain that I somehow wasn't handling him properly. However, he just seemed out of control. No matter how I approached his anger, I couldn't make any significant changes. I purchased this book, but it didn't help me much, as I'd already tried so many behavioral approaches. I finally researched the Feingold Program (you can Google it) after observing that his biggest tantrums came immediately after eating foods with red food coloring. The Feingold Program primarily removes artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from children's food and environment (yes, even those hand-stamps after gym class can have an effect!), and it's been around since the '70s. A family friend used it successfully for her 2 boys during that time, so I knew at least one success story. I bought the materials and dove in. Guess what -- no more tantrums! My boy is a changed person, and I couldn't be happier. Please give this diet a try -- you may be amazed! It's a bit more work for me when shopping or cooking, but my life is so much easier in every other way because I'm not dealing with a raging kid all the time. He and his little sister (who's 3 and is also on the diet now; she doesn't seem as sensitive as he is, but she definitely benefits also) now play nicely most of the time, freeing up hours of my day. I truly believe that the question is NOT "Will this help my child?" ... the question is "How much will this help my child?" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It had tons of action!
I liked By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman because it has a lot action. It's set in 1849. The main characters names are Jack and Praiseworthy. The book starts on a ship that's racing another ship to California. Jack hides a pig so the cook can't make Sunday dinner out of the pig. Jack and Praiseworthy get robbed several times. They go to the mining camps and try to strike it rich. I like the part where Jack and Praiseworthy go propecting. I recommend this book to ages 9 and up. If you like adventure and the Gold Rush, you would like this book.

I have always preferred "real" books to audio books, until now that is. Simon Jones perfectly captures the characters in this book (especially Bartimaeus). The story is wonderful and well-written. Stuck In Neutral is a must read for anyone in any age group. The story is about a boy named Shawn who is 14-years old. Shawn was born with Cerebral Palsy. His dad, Sydney E. McDaniel, left him when he was just a baby. Sidney E. McDaniel wrote a poem about his son a while after he left.He then won a Pulitzer Prize and got really famous. In the beginning of the book Shawn stated that because his dad didn't like that his son has a disorder, that he was going to "end his pain."

I woudn't recommend this book to anyone because it gets a little redundent. The story is about a boy wh was born with a busted blood vessel in his brain that affected his abiliy to move a single muscle, which takes a real toll on his family. They live in a small tow in seattle, with practicly no father because he is to busy on TV shows and adio shows because of his poetry about his son.So his dad can't take it anymore and he decides to end the boys suffering by killing him.The story is told in the boys eyes and we soon realize that the boy is not really suffering but he cant tell his dad that because of his problem with his brain. And we are the only people who get to see this side, the only peple who get to hear him speak.Read the book to ind out the ending.

Editorial Review

Sibling relationships are often fraught with rivalry, jealousy, bitterness, and violence, and the older kids get, the worse the problems seem to get. Sibling strife can be agony for the parents, and few are prepared for the intensity of the battles and emotions that their kids have with each other. The title, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grown-up kids prove this book's value
I read this book in 1992.At the time, I was the mother of a seven-year-old girl and a five-year-old girl.I began applying the lessons immediately. Now twenty-one and ninteen, my daughters describe us as one of the few families they know where the kids are truly friends. This is very different from my own childhood experience. My children had conflict growing up but I learned how to help them learn to resolve it in a positive way, thereby dramatically reducing the stress in our home.I also saw my kids use the techniques with their relationships with friends!I also have a twelve-year-old daughter and eleven-year-old son that get along really well, even learning to share the television and computer, so it's not just luck with the older ones.I now routinely give this book as a gift to parents of a second or third child.I HIGHLY recommend this to parents of children of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book
Excellent book.Well written. Has condensed summaries at end if one does not have time to read full text (and w/kids who has time).Has great cartoons to provide examples and use as refresher. Most important - it provides valuable advice that has proven to already be useful in real life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic help!
After reading this book I realized I was doing it all wrong!Once I started implementing the authors techniques, it was amazing how quickly the fighting no longer escalated to "knock outs".My son and daughter were able to resolve some of their discrepancies on their own with very little involvement on my part!I truly recommend this book if you've got fighting kids, which is most, if not all of us parents! Then go on to read by the same authors, "How to talk so kids will listen and how to listen so kids will talk".Both of these books made a huge difference in my house! ... There are three brothers and their names Jason, Ethan, Abraham. The three brothers' own a saw mill in Dawson. One day this man named Donner took the saw mill away from the three brothers and he wanted to the brothers' to sell the saw mill to him. So Jason was reading in the news paper about a race to Nome. The winner of the race will get 20,000 thousand dollars. Nome is located in Canada. Jason got a hold of a good friend her name is Jamie. So Jamie comes down the Yukon on a steam boat. She and Jason all that night got together and checked the canoe out to see if it was in good condition. They packed their boat all up with their stuff. Jason and Jamie took the canoe to the starting point and got in. The gun went boom! Jamie and Jason got in fist place going down the Yukon. They ran into a big cotton tree so they had to go around it. They were racing against Donner, Donner cut down a Burch tree and the trunk of the tree put a hole in their canoe. So they made a raft and went up stream and traded the raft for a Burch wood canoe. Jamie and Jason entered the ocean and got a kayak from the Eskimos. The two of them went down the ocean. They got out and ran towards the building. I'm not going to tell you what happens. If I tell you I'll ruin the end of the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Race
It's about a boy named Jason and his brothers, living in Dawson City. They have their own sawmill called Hawthorn Brothers Sawmill, where they work to make a living. One day all of the brothers were at a place eating, and a guy starts to kick this dog sitting there, so Ethan, the oldest brother, tells the man not to kick the dog. They got into a pushing match, but somebody in the crowd yelled at Ethan not to fight the guy, because he was pushing a former boxer Sydney Mauler. Then somebody said they should have a boxing match, and they had one two weeks later. Ethan ended up winning and becoming famous. He stopped working at the mill and started to drink and gamble a lot. He was winning everyday, and then one day he started to lose, and everyday he lost more and more until he was broke. Then a lawyer took their mill by having Ethan sing a paper when he was drunk, so they lost their mill. Jason's old friend Jamie Dunavant comes back to Dawson City and they fall in love. Jason told her he was going to Nome for to make money to buy the mill back. Jamie then found a contest. It was a race to Nome for two people and $20,000 the prize. It would be able to buy the mill back. So can Jamie and Jason win the race and get the mill back? You'll have to read the book to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
A Night in Terror Tower is an amazing little book. With only 129 pages it is more than able to draw in a reader and fuel the imagination long after completion. The story is about two young children in London. They take a tour to the Terror Tower in London. The tour turns sour when they lose their guide and are hunted by the mysterious man in the black cape. The children are suffering from memory loss and nothing seems to be going their way! When the man in the black cape catches them the story takes a major twist, the kids are now in the past! This story is excellent for younger readers and will keep them turning pages for hours.I would recommend this book for anyone ages 8-12, but even adults could enjoy this as a quick night read! The graphic settings and bone chilling details to R. L. Stines books really keep you involved. The story is filled with humor, horror, drama, and action that won't let you sit anywhere but the edge of your seat.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a collection of stories
It is no wonder that the author has children fighting over copies of this !!!When I hold it I say "MINE MINE MINE" too. The work is not only excellently WRITTEN - it manages to achieve that ever present goal of the writer - to entertain and teach simultaneously. The parables are so unforgettable - they stay with you and haunt you and make you a better person.I find myself going over and over the stories in my mind when I am quiet or even when I am not - they just keep running through my brain - and each time I learn something more. There is gentle and strong wisdom here - with a touch of magick. However it becomes very addictive - mine is being usedand loved till it is worn out. This is more than a collection of stories - it is one of those creations that also becomes a beloved friend.

I love this tape! I've had it for a few years and have lent it to every mom I know. I listen to it periodically when I need a refresher of Barbara's practical advice for dealing with many of the day-to-day parenting challenges. I highly recommend it for any parent.
