Editorial Review

Michael Riera is the high school counselor many of us wish we'd had: he's smart, non-judgmental, and respectful of kids. This excellent book is chock full o' advice for parents that sometimes goes against the established grain but makes utter sense. For example, don't give advice even when asked, embrace estrangement (it's part of your teenager's development), and take a demotion and move from "manager" to "consultant." Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Prefer Developing Capable People
I would highly recommend: Positive Discipline for Teenagers: Empowering Your Teens and Yourself Through Kind and Firm Parenting by Ed.D. Jane Nelsen (Author), Lynn Lott (Author) ISBN 076152181X before this book. (Or any other in the Positive Discipline / Developing Capable People Series by Jane Nelson and H. Stephen Glenn)

5-0 out of 5 stars Making sense of it all
Most of us spend our entire adult life trying to figure out our own childhood, so it's no wonder that raising a child can seem confusing, challenging and at times scary. This book saved me.It taught me (or atleast reminded me) that all teenagers go through enormous physical, psychological and social change in the high school years. While thespecific behaviors will vary from child to child, there is a common threadrunning through it all -- and it makes sense. This book reassured me thatmy child wasn't abnormal, that I was right in being confused and sometimesappalled by their behavior. And it let me take a step back and not take itso personally. After reading this book, I bought a dozen copies to give tofriends and business associates who were struggling with teenagers (or soonwould be). Read this and both you and your child will benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncommon Understanding!
From a teenager who has read more than his fair share of parenting books, this one tops them off.On average, this book covers exactly what these types of books should. It doesn't just tell the parent to "talkmore" with their teenager, it actually goes in depth about how theteenager thinks and feels. And, for the first time in my experience, itactually gets close! If you have teens, you should have this book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay stories
Good book about growing up and some of the great stories you're expect from your grandfather. Could have used less information on the beatings headmasters used to give students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some are funny. Some are painful. Some are unpleaseant. Perhaps this is why I have remembered them so vividly. All are true.
So says Roald Dahl in the introduction to his autobiogrophy,BOY. The book is a collection of his childhood memories, from the magical summers in Norway to the dreary days at St.Peters boarding school. As in all of Dahl's works the characters are quirky and memorable, but more fascinating here because they really existed. The auther recounts the adventures of his childhood with tenderness and dry humor.
5-0 out of 5 stars delightful melodrama
I'm a Dahl fan, a writerfor both adults and children. I think the key to his success as writer for children is that he doesn't think children are stupid or don't understand what they see. From my own experience, and now as a father, I know that children see, hear, think and make conclusions with their experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars The return of John Avery Whittaker!
When John Avery Whittaker returns from a lengthy stay in the Middle East, the entire town of Odyssey turns out for a joyous homecoming celebration complete with fanfare and fireworks. But for Jack, Whit's arrival means an uneasy reunion-and a tough decision about the future. Then, the phrase "Fools rush in" takes on a new significance for Eugene when he neglects to seek God's direction in his relationhip with Katrina.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's really good, awesome, spectacular.
If you've listen to to Adventures in Odyssey as long as I have, you'll LOVE this audio cassette. A special person (don't want to let you know who it is. It would spoil the surprise.)left Odyssey a few years ago and has FINALLY returned. Connie Kendall wanted to make this a SPECIAL day for this special person and instead of being at the airport, the ceremonies, ect. when this person arrived, she was just late for all of these things. She finnally tracked the special person down and he was asleep, do to exaustion, she was so sad, frustrated, mad, you get the point. She was cring, and she woke up the special person, she was so glad to hug the special person. If you want more information on Adventures in Odyssey, e-mail me at AWANABoy@aol.com Thanks! ... I love the beautiful illustrations in this book and the rhyming is perfect for phonemic awareness for preschoolers. It is the perfect amount of scary for 4 and 5 year olds. It is a short, spooky, read with gorgeous pictures.

Editorial Review

Forced to leave her sunny Caribbean home for the bleak Connecticut Colony, Kit Tyler is filled with trepidation. As they sail up the river to Kit's new home, the teasing and moodiness of a young sailor named Nat doesn't help. Still, her unsinkable spirit soon bobs back up. What this spirited teenager doesn't count on, however, is how her aunt and uncle's stern Puritan community will view her. In the colonies of 1687, a girl who swims, wears silk and satin gowns, and talks back to her elders is not only headstrong, she is in grave danger of being regarded as a witch. When Kit befriends an old Quaker woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond, it is more than the ascetics can take: soon Kit is defending her life. Who can she count on as she confronts these angry and suspicious townspeople? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A bewitching story
This is one of my favorite books. I first read this book while in middle school and have re-read it so many times that I can recite some of the passages! The story of the girl who leaves her island home and must adjust to the harsh New England environment struck a chord with me, as I was a military kid and always moving from place to place. This story is about a girl who finds herself in a new environment that goes against everything she has ever learned or experienced, and she must learn who she is in order to survive this new land. It's also a romance story, and an intriguing story that shows what can happen when people become so closed-minded about what is "right" and "proper" that they refuse to look past a person's supposed subversive actions in order to really see or understand that person.Highly recommended reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brian Coyne Miss.Weinstein English
Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire are at Briny Beach one day when Mr. Poe, a friend of their parents, arrives to tell them that their house has burned down, and that their parents have died in the fire. They now have become orphans. The orphans live with Mr. Poe until he can find a guardian for them. He finally places them with their nearest relative, Count Olaf, who is either their third cousin four times remove.Count Olaf, a dirty man with one eyebrow, shiny eyes, and a tattoo of an eye on his ankle, turns out to be a greedy and mean actor who wants the huge Baudelaire fortune for himself. When he finds that he will not receive it, he treats the children poorly and forces them to do difficult chores for himself and his acting group.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bad beginning but exciting story.
I read this book because a friend of mine recommended. In first part I was so bored that I almost slept. Then when I tried to sleep an exciting scene came out. It was a eye-opener. It was about that Count Olaf was yelling at Baudelaires. They cooked, but olaf hated it. In first part I thought that olaf was a good man. That's why it woke me up. Another thing is that the pictures seemed very good and real. Even though they were black and white I liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bad Beginning
A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket is a great, yet surprising book. In this book, there are three children named Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire. They are the main characters, or the protagonists. Violet, the oldest likes to invent and build thing, she is very smart. Klaus, who is the middle child is also very smart and likes to examine creatures in tide pools and also likes to read. Sunny, who is only an infant loves to bite anything she can get her hands on. The problem starts out, when they figure out their house has burned down, and their parents have died. The Baudelaire family is very wealthy and they lived in a mansion with a huge library. Violet, Klaus and sunny have to stay at Mr. Poe's house, who is a very good friend of their parents. The children decide they do not like it there and learn that they are leaving and staying with their distant relative named Count Olaf. Count Olaf is the enemy or the antagonist in this story, who they have never heard of. When they arrive at his house, it looked very strange and bent out of shape. Also when they met him he acted very weird as if he was hiding something. He made them do all of the chores and make dinner for him and for when all his friends come over to rehearse lines for their play. They children started getting suspicious, when Count Olaf slaps Klaus on the face and one of his friends mention he should try to steal their fortune. The children try to tell Mr. Poe, but he does not believe that Count olaf would do such a thing. Since he won't believe them, they do a little research and find out that you can only get someone's fortune by marriage. Not to long after, Count Olaf suggests that they should be in a play with him, and violet would be the bride, and Klaus and Sunny would work backstage. Now I can't tell what happens next, so you will just have to read this book, put together the clues, and figure it out for yourself. I suggest this book, because I thought it was very good, and I was never bored. I actually read it in one day. It also has a good lesson to it, which is to be thankful for what you have, because when you least expect it, you could have nothing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mind opener
I am a father of two boys and I came across this book by searching on Amazon for books that could help me improve my parenting skills. I love my boys and I consider my parenting as a full time job. I read other readers comments and I did some research before I purchased a couple of books, Raising Cain being one of them. My main motivation in buying these books is derived from the frustration that I experience when I know I fail to understand my son on some issues and also from my worry that I do not understand what is going on in a life of a young man in today's world.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent insight
I appreciated the insight in this book and have recommended it to everyone I know, and most importantly to the women in my life so they can understand me a little better when I do that male "thing" that confounds them so.As others have done I also read Reviving Ophelia and I would recommend these two books be read in tandem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for parents/caregivers
This book provides a fascinating insight into the emotional development of boys.I am only on Chapter 4 of the book and already it has provided answers to some fundamental, why-does-he-do-that questions that I've had about my son.It should be required reading for teachers and administrators.I definitely recommend this book to any parent of young boys. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a very good children's novel. It is easy to read and moves along quickly to keep the attention. The story is enchanting and very sweet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting
The story of a family which can never die or get hurt known as the Tucks. A classic love story between living forever for love or living life normal. Which would you choose? The main character Winnie Foster is caught between her new love, Jessie, which belongs to the Tuck family. Now the Tuck family is a very strange family which kept there life as a secret by moving to different place every once in a while. The story goes on and at the end Winnie is either to choose Jessie and drink from the fountain of youth or go on living and move on. Jessie did not want her to drink from it but she loved him and said she would do anything. The setting takes place in a old town called Treegap, which was very small and secluded from the outside world. I would say the genre of this book is a love and fantasy. The book has 139 pages and you cannot stop until you hit that blank page at the end of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every August, my thoughts turn to Tuck Everlasting
The opening of TUCK EVERLASTING is one of the best beginnings of any book I've ever read, includingmany of the classics. Whatever this book my lack in character development, it makes up for ten-fold in theme. This book and its concepts are ageless andhaunting. The best stories in life are often told as a parable, and TUCK EVERLASTING delivers. It is not a plot driven book or even a character driven book, it is question driven book...Do you choose life? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great decent family time fun
After getting hooked to a radio book I heard almost 3 years ago I decided to look for other Christian based audio book stories that I could enjoy with my son.I bought this for him and we have heard several so far.The stories are played out in a very real and tangible way.We have sat in bed with our eyes closed and it feels like you're in a theater.Of course it helps if you have surround sound but sounds just as good if not.Great for long trips in the car or to just play on a rainy day at home snuggled under the covers. This type of story telling awakens the imagination of children in a way that TV will never!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
Listening to the book in full theater format was very interesting and enjoyable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Narnia Radio Theatre - almost perfect
I do NOT enjoy audio books - I generally find them long and boring and would much rather use my own imagination than some actor's choice of cadence and emphasis. On the other hand, I loved (mostly) the BBC radio productions of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" which have become long road trip standards for our family.I have never found a comparable production until I discovered the The Chronicles of Narnia. The voices of the actors were VERY well done(with one exception) and the background sound effects and music were excellent and I found the connective narrative enough without being too much.On the other hand, I have read of the Narnia books so I may be unconsciously bridging gaps. Still, my husband, my son and my grandchildren have only read/seen "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" before hearing this set and had no problem with the other books, so the narrative is probably sufficient.I have two issues with the series which is why I awarded only 4 stars:

4-0 out of 5 stars Saving not-so-maidenly damsels in distress

2-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the weakest of the Travis McGee novels.
It's still a fairly good read, lively, suspenseful, generally worthwhile. But there are two major flaws that bring its rating down considerably. One is that the main romantic interest is NOT the "damsel in distress"; that position is occupied by a thoroughly unsympathetic character, one who McGee is manipulated by in ways that we rarely see. The other is that, while it isn't uncommon for some aspect of this series to seem rather outdated these days, generally, the main character's attitudes seem remarkably reasonable if a bit old-fashioned; in one scene in this book, he is demonstrated to be completely clueless and utterly unsympathetic towards lesbians. While I wouldn't have been surprised or offended had he proved somewhat clueless and condescending, his attitude in that scene (and clearly, that of the author) were neolithic and downright hostile enough to really grate on my nerves. Really ruined what otherwise would have been a pretty fair to middling book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Travis
Even though I still find "Flash of Green" to be my favorite MacDonald book, there's something so appealing about the Travis McGee series that keeps me coming back to them. The "Quick Red Fox" is a perfect example is why. It is well-paced and the central mystery is engrossing. The minor charactersare all well-drawn and memorable. And, of course, it's Travis!

Editorial Review

Cimorene, princess of Linderwall, is a classic tomboy heroine with classic tomboy strengths--all of which are perceived by those around her as defects: "As for the girl's disposition--well, when people were being polite, they said she was strong-minded. When they were angry or annoyed with her, they said she was as stubborn as a pig." Cimorene, tired of etiquette and embroidery, runs away from home and finds herself in a nest of dragons. Now, in Cimorene's world--a world cleverly built by author Patricia C. Wrede on the shifting sands of myriad fairy tales--princesses are forever being captured by dragons. The difference here is that Cimorene goes willingly. She would rather keep house for the dragon Kazul than be bored in her parents' castle. With her quick wit and her stubborn courage, Cimorene saves the mostly kind dragons from a wicked plot hatched by the local wizards, and worms her way into the hearts of young girls everywhere.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fairy tale
This is the first novel in a juvenile fantasy featuring Cimorene, an extremely bored princess.Cimorene is the 7th daughter of the king of Linderwall, and she does not want to be like her sisters. But every time she tries to do something different, her efforts are thwarted. To avoid meeting another prospective husband, Cimorene runs away from home and finds herself the princess of a dragon.Unlike the other princess' within the dragons' community, Cimorene willingly works for Kazul and assists her with her magic, housekeeping, cooking, and other most un-princess-like jobs.Following Cimorene's tale was humorous and fantastic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and lively story, but I don't really care about buying the sequels
Dealing with Dragons is a fun, funny, and entertaining story.I enjoyed it very much, and thought its take on so many established fairy tale conventions as intelligent and creative. This book is worth reading if you're looking for something light and fun with some strong, comical characters.

Editorial Review

Nothing ever happens to Henry Huggins. Nothing, that is, until a straydog named Ribsy comes into his life. Pretty soon, Henry and Ribsy are wreaking havoc on the city bus, getting a ride in a police car with sirens wailing, and winning a prize at the dog show. Thanks to their joint shenanigans, Henry finds himself covered in green paint one day, and later accidentally colors Ribsy's fur pale pink. One week, Henry catches earthworms for his fisherman neighbor to raise money for a borrowed ball Ribsy helped him lose. One football costs a lot of earthworms--1,395, to be exact. Plus 41 worms for tax. Life is no longer dull.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and Humorous Reading!Still Great after 50+ Years!
I never did read much Cleary growing up...but since the Girl is having some trouble getting into book, I thought this might be a good one for her...and I was right, she absolutely LOVED it.Henry Huggins (like How to Eat Fried Worms) is a bit dated, since it was written in 1949, but the overall feel and character of the story is pretty much timeless. We are presented with a typical neighborhood, family, kids, neighbors of the time that, despite the way we live life today, is presented in a way that is still accessible to kids today (even those not living in suburban neighborhoods.Henry is a typical boy who wants a bit of excitement in his life...and finds it while browsing at the local convenience store, in the form of Ribsy as skinny mutt who he decides to take home (with his mother's permission of course)...on the BUS!This is first of 5 adventures that Henry and Ribsy encounter as they go on through the book (we also get raising guppies, catching thousands of night crawlers, a charming look at Christmas pageants and snow from a 9 year olds perspective, the dog show, and the prospect of Henry having to give up Ribsy). Each is charming and still endearing more than 50 years after it was originally written. We are presented with stories that show Henry as honest and hard working, we learn to have compassion for others and that doing the right thing is always important...all in a humorous and realistic way that doesn't feel like the message is being shoved down our throats!I give it a solid A, even after 50+ years, Henry Huggins is fine reading for 8-10 year olds!

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry Huggins
I loved this book.I love Beverly Cleary. I think this is her best book. Henry is a fifth grader, and I am too, so it is cool. Everything Henry and Ribsy do, you can picture yourself doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read for early readers
I bought this book in English and Spanish - cross-comparing the two is a good way to learn a second language.I strongly recommed Spanish readers buy the book in English, along with the Henry Huggins CD in English.Just read the other reviews about the book if you want only the literary info.If you're interested in looking up other Spanish books, here's a few websites you might wanna check out:

3-0 out of 5 stars Dragonwings
Moonshadow starts out as a shy little boy who lives in China who was curious about The Land of the Golden Mountain (America). Men from China would go to America in search for a better life. This is what Moonshadow's father did. One day Moonshadow was told that he had to choose between either staying in China and never knowing his father or being taken to his father in The Land of the Golden Mountain, he chose to leave. On the boat he was very frightened because he heard the older men telling stories of how they were almost tortured in America which did not make it any easier for Moonshadow to leave China. When he arrives he encounters a couple of "scary" things before they get to where he will be staying. Everyone with the last name of Lee works in a Laundry Shop, which is owned by Uncle Bright Star and White Deer. Moonshadow is greeted with Demon (white people) clothing. He already doesn't like what he sees. Moon shadow faces many difficulties such as being mugged, robbed, being picked on and racism through out the whole story. Towards the end of the story Moonshadow's father Windrider discovers that he wants to peruse his dream and he will need Moonshadow's help to achieve that dream. When he tells everyone that he will be moving out they are hurt and angry. They live by a white demoness and her niece, Miss. Whitlaw and Robin. While they are living there Windrider works as a handy man for Mr. Alger. Everything is perfect until the Earthquake comes. Miss. Whitlaw and Robin, Moonshadow and Windrider have to separate. It is up to Moonshadow to take over there new house because father is working on his dream but, will he finish in time and will it work? You find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most wonderful book I've ever read
I highly recommend this book to anyone...adult or child. I thought this book was a touching story of family and hopes and dreams. I, too, thought it was boring at the beggining, but I got more into it at about chapter 2. I hope more people read this book. Laurence Yep has written a very good book. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars ZZZ,oh, what are we talking about?
Dragonwings is an okay, so-so story about a boy (Moonshadow) and his dad (windrider) who want to build the newfangled invention an aeroplane. The story is confusing, and when they don't understand an english word, it's spelled out in a way where you have to pronounce it to find out what it means. Moonshadow is an innagrant from China and faces problems dealing with his race. It's the book I had to read for my social studies homework and I say, "Get it from the library," ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars i read this over and over again.
this book never gets old.i've had it for so long and now i'm off to college and i still enjoy reading it cover to cover.anne is a great character, one who is easy to love and who explains herself well.the other characters are also quirky.something about this book is very universal, which i think explains why even in this century i still find myself being able to relate to Anne.the plot, while essentially a love story, is not overly sappy.and while most people would probably expect the ending, the twists and turns throughout the novel keep you entertained and engaged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
"Anne of the Island" is my favorite Anne book, and the last chapters of my copy are worn and torn because I have read it so many times.I loved it as a young girl, and I loved it again when I read it from my college dorm room (in fact, I think it's time for another rereading!).Plus, of course, a college education makes many of the literary references more relevant than they were at age 11.
5-0 out of 5 stars ENJOYED THIS THIRD OF THE SERIES AS MUCH AS THE FIRST
The story of Anne continues with this work and the author stays true to her style, story line and character developement. This, like the other books in this series, have a rather timeless nature about them and a comforting charm. The reader, of course, must remember the time they were written and the style and syntax used at that time. From my own point of view, this is great.I enjoy this type of writing and certainly enjoy Ms. Montgomery's story telling abilities. In this work, Anne goes off to Redman College and her adventure continues.Recommend these books for readers of all ages.Wish there were more works out there like it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting look into Martin's past and a wonderful read that takes a look at big issues. Highly recommended
The sixth Redwall novel, Martin the Warrior is the story of young Martin's imprisonment by, escape from, and war against the Badrang the Tyrant, ruler of Marshank. Martin is a young mouse, the son of Luke the Warrior. He is captured and enslaved by Badrang, and one night, after violent insurrection, tied up to suffer through a raging storm. It is then he meets Rose, a maiden mouse from the peaceful sanctuary of Noonvale whose brother Brome has also been captured by Badrang. Martin, Rose, and Brome arrange from an escape from Marshank, promising the other slaves that they will one day come back to free them all and to destroy Badrang and his fortress forever. With the help of a roving band of circus performers and a mass of willful slaves, and across a journey through the coastal lands, Brome and Martin each struggle to stay alive, build an army, and return to destroy Badrang. This is a throughly enjoyable installment of the Redwall series, Martin the Warrior provides anxiously-awaited background to Martin's character as he discovers and refines his fighting spirit, experiences peace in Noonvale, and forms a deep friendship with Rose. The book is exciting, the characters (particularly those of Martin, the warrior Felldoh, and the peaceful Brome) are realistic and inspiring, and the book tackles some of the ethical and personal problems of war and the warrior's life that the other Redwall books overlook. It is a great read, a logical lead up to later Redwall books and to the building of Redwall itself, and one of the better books in this series.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best one!
I love the Redwall books because the charictors are great and there is a ton of action. This one is the best book because of how much is happening. Friends turn to enemys and enemys turn to friends. This book is also a tear jerker because if all the deaths but I love it anyway! ... Read more
