Editorial Review

Snow White's stepmother looks like a pussycat compared to the monster under which Adeline Yen Mah suffered. The author's memoir of life in mainland China and--after the 1949 revolution--Hong Kong is a gruesome chronicle of nonstop emotional abuse from her wealthy father and his beautiful, cruel second wife. Chinese proverbs scattered throughout the text pithily covey the traditional world view that prompted Adeline's subservience. Had she not escaped to America, where she experienced a fulfilling medical career and a happy marriage, her story would be unbearable; instead, it's grimly fascinating: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Falling leaves return to their roots.
Adeline Yen Mah was born in a well-placed, moneyed Chinese family prominent in the elite of Shanghai and later on in booming Hong Kong. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and she was always blamed for her death. Her father then married Niang, a beautiful Eurasian who is evil (particularly to Adeline), but nonetheless a formidable force in the Yen household.

This book was very interesting and a easy read. I love the fact that the author conveyed historic events. I would say that she could have went into to more details about her life with her second husband. How did the latter events affect her marriage and family? I would love to read about what has happened since the death of the stepmother. Good Book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was extremely helpful.
This book gives parents effective tools for dealing with common "attitude" problems with children. It gives LOTS of examples and is effective with both young and older children.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Communication Guide
As a chaplain in the USAF I have used this book and given it to hundreds of people. The principels outlined in the book are not only the best to help children, they are the best I have found for use with spouses, staff, and anyone you encounter!
5-0 out of 5 stars Parent Effectiveness Training
Once in a while one comes across a book that is life-changing. Parent Effectiveness Training is such a book. Having read many other books on child raising, only to find that the methods and techniques are short-term at best or positively harmful, this book provides a welcome change. It makes a lot of sense and although parents may find it difficult to change the habits of a lifetime, Dr Gordon provides practical answers that we found very quickly started to yield positive results. In particular, the atmosphere in our family has changed for the better and we feel prepared for the way ahead. Finally, this book is not just about raising children. It has changed the way I look at all my interactions with family, friends and colleagues, and has given me a new perspective on the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book
My preschool class absolutely loves this book.Whenever I read it, I read it in the voice of the little old lady. The 2nd time I read the book, my students started to say some parts of the story, like "the head when nod nod".They want me to read this book every day to them.I defnitely recommend this book to everyone.

Makes a few accurate observations about boy behavior and its origins, however, the book leans a little too much toward "feminization" of boys in preventing behavioral problems. This may be the politically-correct way to help boys, but not the productive way.The book is also on the new york times best-seller list, this is significant, because that publication is notorious for being the most anti-male biased newspaper in the united states.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are you raising boys today?
If you are raising boys today I suggest reading this book before they enter the school system! Is he in school and saying things like, "that's gay" or "fag"? Sure he is, we raise them that way and don't even know it.
3-0 out of 5 stars You don't have to read the whole thing
The author makes some fantastic points in the first hundred or so pages in this book.He then makes those points over and over again until they have lost all meaning.

Donald Zinkoff is one of the greatest kids you could ever hope to meet.He laughs easily, he likes people, he loves school, he tries to rescue lostgirls in blizzards, he talks to old ladies. The only problem is, he's a loser.Until fourth grade, Zinkoff's uncontrollable giggling in class, sloppyhandwriting, horrible flute playing, bad grades, clumsiness, and ineptitude atsports go largely unnoticed. When he blows a race for his team, however, histransition to loserdom is complete: "[Loser] is the word. It is Zinkoff's newname. It is not in the roll book." Fortunately, he doesn't really notice. 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books i've ever read!!
In this book there is a boy named Donald Zinkoff. He has just now started the first grade. He is not fitting in very well he does everything that he is told to do by the teacher and he is always getting picked on and teased so school was not his favorite part of the day. He has a big problem where he has no friends and is not fitting in he is being made fun of and teased very much. I think that his book is a good book and i recomend that you should read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loser
The title of my book is Loser by Jerry Spinelli. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. The theme is to not bully. This book addresses bullying in a new way for me. I have always known that bullying someone can really hurt their self esteem, but Zinkoff was unaware of his treatment. Sometimes Zinkoff knew that other kids thought he was weird but it didn't ruin his life. He is more interested in the Nine Hundred Block of Willow. This street is where he met Claudia, a little girl who wears a leash. This street is also where the waiting Man lives. He sits and just waits for his brother to come back from the war that was 35 years ago. Jerry Spinelli has also written the book Stargirl in addition to Loser. These books are similar. Both main characters are the outcasts. Zinkoff is the main character of Loser. He has a sister named Polly. His best friend in 2nd grade was Andrew. Then, when Andrew moved, Zinkoff asked Hector to be his new best friend. They were only friends for a little bit. Hector just never answered the phone when Zinkoff called and never wanted to play. Their relationship was over pretty fast. Hobin was also a character in this book. He told Zinkoff he wasn't good at anything and this was the 1st time everyone, including Zinkoff, realized that he was a loser. The main conflict in the story was that Zinkoff needed to be accepted, not for himself or his self esteem, but to prove to others that he is just the same as they are. Zinkoff is naturally bad at everything. He never wins anything. He had only ever received one A in his life, and when he did all his classmates called him "Z man" the whole day. He then realized that they were blowing it way out of proportion and mocking him. His team also lost on field day because Zinkoff was the last person to finish the race in the relay and came in last. All these little things Zinkoff did made the conflict so much worse. The climax is when Zinkoff goes to middle school and isn't just a loser He is a nobody. No one even thought he was worth making fun of any more. I can't tell you the rest, but I can say it's worth reading to the end. I completely recommend this book. It gave me a better understanding of the best and right way to handle bullies. I give it 4 out of 5 stars!

Very skeptical upon purchasing. After all, kids don't listen to tapes in English, so why would they listen in Italian? I was very wrong, and AMAZED at my 4 year old niece. She follows the book while listening and repeating, and sounds exactly like the tape. It's her favorite book. Her grandmother from Italy was also impressed.I'm sold.I bought this same language pack in Spanish for my daughter. One thing though: The flash cards would be better having written the numbers instead of having six tomatoes for the number six.She thinks the word means tomatoes instead of six. ... Wemberly the mouse worries about everything: big things, like whetherher parents might disappear in the middle of the night; little things, likewhether she'll spill grape juice on her toy rabbit, Petal; and things inbetween, like whether she might shrink in the bathtub. What she is more worriedabout than anything else, however, is her first day at the New Morning NurserySchool: "What if no one else has spots? What if no one else wears stripes? Whatif no one else brings a doll? What if the teacher is mean? What if the roomsmells bad?" Happily, Miss Peachum introduces her to a kindred spirit rightaway. 5-0 out of 5 stars IT IS DIFFICULT TO FIND ANYTHING NOT TO LIKE IN THIS WORK.
This is one of those real surprises. What seems simple at first is really rather profound. All little kids worry (as do most adults) and they worry about the strangest little things. But we have to remember that what is little to us, is rather large to a first grader. This little book is perfect to read to the young child and a perfect lead-in to a great discussion of why not to worry and to put everthing into prespective. The text is quite simple and to the point. The art work is great and goes well with the text. The book is funny and the book is true and it has a great ending that actually teaches a lesson. What more could you want?I read this one to my classes all the time and have yet to find a child who could not relate.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable and Very Helpful for a worrier or not
We bought this book for our son, who had begun to worry a bit more about school, and all the what if's, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable little worry wart
Wemberly (a little girl mouse, despite the masculine sounding name) is a worrier. My oh my how she worries. It's amazing the girl can even get out of bed in the morning, she's so wracked with worries morning, noon, and night. She doesn't take the advice of her grandmother half as much as she should. Her grandmother (a sweatshirt wearing, roller-blade enjoying, high-tops sports shoe figure) is constantly advising Wemberly that she is carrying, "Too much worry". And on top of everything Wemberly is about to go to school for the first time. Rest assured that by the end of the tale, Wemberly's worries have at last been put to rest. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books of all time
This is Enright's second book in the Melendy family quartet, after The Saturdays. In this installment, the Melendy family (Mona, Rush, Randy, Oliver, Father, Cuffy, Willy Sloper, and dog Isaac) move from New York to a big house in the country called the Four-Story Mistake. Times are a bit tough, because World War II is going on, and they don't have a lot of money. But the house, and the 30 acre grounds, and the local village, prove to be paradise for kids.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every children's book collection should have this book in it!
Well, this and all the other Melendy Family books, but this is a particular favorite.I worry that the fact that the book is set in a time period that might not appeal to young readers upon picking it up for the first time, but I believe every child will enjoy the adventures of the Melendy family if they give the book a chance.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Four-Story Mistake
Although I bought this book for my 9-year old daughter, I decided to read it one Saturday afternoon when my supply of reading material ran out. I thoroughly enjoyed the book - it's a terrific story, the characters are wonderful, and the focus on family and the lack of "electronic entertainment" make it a book full of important lessons that have been mostly lost for kids today.

Editorial Review

Nathaniel is a boy magician-in-training, sold to the government by his birth parents at the age of five and sent to live as an apprentice to a master. Powerful magicians rule Britain, and its empire, and Nathaniel is told his is the "ultimate sacrifice" for a "noble destiny." If leaving his parents and erasing his past life isn't tough enough, Nathaniel's master, Arthur Underwood, is a cold, condescending, and cruel middle-ranking magician in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The boy's only saving grace is the master's wife, Martha Underwood, who shows him genuine affection that he rewards with fierce devotion. Nathaniel gets along tolerably well over the years in the Underwood household until the summer before his eleventh birthday. Everything changes when he is publicly humiliated by the ruthless magician Simon Lovelace and betrayed by his cowardly master who does not defend him.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love Bartimaeus!
Stop your browsing and buy this book. Jonathon Stroud gives the world of fantasy his own unique twist. In his world magicians cast spells to do various ne'er do well deeds, but the spells don't magically go out to do their business. No, the magicians must work through a second party namely an imp or a djinni or an afrit or some other creatively named creature. The creature does the biding of the magician. The creature also has a mind and a will of its own. So part of the fun of this book is the tug of war between the magicians and the creatures. The spotlight magician in this book is a young boy named Nathaniel. He summons a creature named Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus is a wise-cracking, sarcastic, drippingly funny sideman who is the energy in this book. So stop browsing and buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Original Idea
I really enjoyed reading this book, and the following books in the series. Very original, I especially enjoyed the continuous shifting point of view between Bartimaeus (Jini) and Nathaniel (magician in training). The book is fast paced with plenty of action and sly humor. ... Good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have a copy of this book!
My mother bought a copy of this title for me to give to her future grandchild. I was so inspired by it, that I want to give it to all of my friends now. This book has delightful drawings and a wonderful message. This book is fun to read as an adult and a child. It is so important that children and adults are surrounded by positive messages like the one this book has to offer. I recommend it for everyone!
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific and fun book for young ones!
The positive messages of this book are complemented by the terrific illustrations.A very simple yet important text as it teaches little ones to like themselves. The main character is one very upbeat pig.My son enjoys and laughs at the illustrations. The text provides fodder for conversation. Not too heavy in a figurative or literal way, this book is small enough to warrant a place on every small child's bookshelf. You may also want to check out Ms. Carlson's other books as they are all terrific.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for a preschooler's sad moments
A great way for preschoolers to repair their fragile sense of self and self-respect.Any child should be able to absorb these positive message to repeat to themselves when they feel down. ... Read more

Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle's mother has disappeared. While tracing her steps on a car trip from Ohio to Idaho with her grandparents, Salamanca tells a story to pass the time about a friend named Phoebe Winterbottom whose mother vanished and who received secret messages after her disappearance. One of them read, "Don't judge a man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins."Despite her father's warning that she is "fishing in the air," Salamanca hopes to bring her home. By drawing strength from her Native American ancestry, she is able to face the truth about her mother. Walk Two MoonsRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 1-day read!
I was at my usual trip to the library, shuffling through the books, and this book caught my eye. I picked it up, and read the inside, which honestly, I think was lamely put. Well, I took the book home and started to read it. By the third chapter, I was hooked. It was interesting, and what really was neat to me, was how it sounded like an actual 13 year old was telling the story!
1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time
I read this book for school a while ago, and from the moment I started I knew that it was going to be a long, long, long read. The characters in the book were a bunch of annoying brats that seemed far too full of themselves to actually exist. The plot was also terriable for the fact that it was almost as if there wasn't one. A girl goes looking for her mother (which the outcome is clearly easy to spot since the book puts too much of it's time on the buildup of"Whats going to happen?")
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply put: Beautiful.
This book is truly one the best that I have ever had the privilege to read. It flows from one chapter tot he next, never skipping a beat, with vibrant characters that I can certainly identify with: the irritating friend, the homey grandparents, etc.

Editorial Review

He may be an old standby, but he never lets us down. When in doubt, turn to the story of the cat that transformed a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure. There's another, hidden adventure, too: this book really will help children learn to read. With his simple and often single-vowel vocabulary, the good Doctor knew what he was doing: hear it, learn it, read it--laughing all the way. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite! More than meets the eye!
The Cat in the Hat at first glance may seem like a nonsensical text meant merely to amuse its readers. If you stop and ponder this story of two children left at home alone one afternoon, you soon realize there is a more powerful message than first meets the eye. The children clearly know the difference between right and wrong, but with the slightest influence from the Cat, they easily give in. I believe the fish represents their conscience. They choose to ignore its warning time and again, and therefore, find themselves in a mountain of mess. Before the story's end, they are able to right the wrongs, but we as readers are left with this thought and question: "Then our mother came in and she said to us two, "Did you have any fun, tell me what did you do?" Should we tell her about it? Now what SHOULD we do? What would you do if your mother asked you?" (Seuss, 60-61).

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this
This is such a fun clever book.I love to read it to my son.The story gets so exciting- the only problem is it has so much going on in it that some times I think it is not good to read it before bed time.Because if you get too into the characters it could wake your kid up.Love it! ... Read more

If you like Judy Blume, this is a good book for you because it is hilarious.Peter is the boy telling the story about his family and himself. He and his family are moving to Princeton for a year for his father's work.Once they got there they finished their summer, and then Peter and his brother Fudge went to school. Peter made a new friend who lived across the street. His name is Alex.Fudge also made a new friend, named Daniel from his kindergarten class.
5-0 out of 5 stars Super Fudge is a GREAT book!
Super Fudge is a great book. It's about a kid named Fudge and his sister and brother. His brother's name is Peter. His sister's name is tootsie. The story is about all three of them moving to Princeton for a year. They have some trouble getting used to it, and the same kind of trouble with the school. They both make new friends. Alex,Peter's friend lives right across the street. Fudge's friend's name is Daniel. They like to go down to the lake for fun.
