Editorial Review

The year is 1963, and self-important Byron Watson is the bane of hisyounger brother Kenny's existence. Constantly in trouble for one thing oranother, from straightening his hair into a "conk" to lighting fires to freezinghis lips to the mirror of the new family car, Byron finally pushes his familytoo far. Before this "official juvenile delinquent" can cut school or stealchange one more time, Momma and Dad finally make good on their threat to sendhim to the deep south to spend the summer with his tiny, strict grandmother.Soon the whole family is packed up, ready to make the drive from Flint,Michigan, straight into one of the most chilling moments in America's history:the burning of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church with four little girlsinside.Read more

The Watsons Go To Birmingham was a story about real life things. In the beginning, Byron and Kenny are outside scraping ice off of the Brown Bomber a.k.a. the Watsons car. Then Kenny hears a noise coming from the other side of the car where Byron is. He doesn't go over there because he thinks Byron will trick him, because a few days before Byron and Buphead (Byron's best friend) played a trick on Kenny and hit him in the face with snowballs. When Kenny goes to the other side finally he sees Byron's lips stuck to the mirror. He then ran in to get the family. Daniel (their dad) started laughing because he had never seen anything like that. Daniel and Wilona (their mom) were trying to think of a way to get Byron's lips off of the mirror. Daniel decided to get water so he could pore it on Byron's lips but it just made it. Wilona tells the family to go inside then. When they were all inside Wilona pulled on Byron's lips until they came off. When Kenny was in school he got picked on by Larry Dunn because he had a lazy eye and he was a good reader. One day a new kid named Rufus came to school at Clark. Rufus started getting picked on more than Kenny because Rufus talked different (he had lived in Arkansas) and Rufus didn't have a lot of clothes. Kenny and Rufus became good friends but one day somebody said something about Rufus and Kenny laughed. Since Kenny laughed at him Rufus stopped hanging out with Kenny. They ended up fixing the problem and became friends again. When winter came, Kenny shared his gloves with Rufus for awhile but then decided to act like he had lost them so his mom gave him his other pair of leather gloves and Rufus got the old pair. Then one day, Kenny's gloves went missing and Larry Dunn had gotten a pair of leather gloves instead of cheap plastic ones. Kenny found out that Larry had stolen his gloves so Byron and Buphead beat Larry up. Kenny then got his gloves back. When Byron kept lighting matches in the house Wilona got mad at him and said if he would do it one more time she would do something to him. Then one day, Kenny saw that Byron went into the bathroom and locked the door so he went and looked through the key hole. He saw Byron in there making Kleenex's into parachutes and then lighting matches and burning the parachutes to where they would fall into the toilet. When Wilona came upstairs she smelled smoke and saw Kenny looking through the keyhole so she got Byron out of there and took him downstairs. Then Joey started crying because Mama had gotten out matches and Vaseline. She knew that Mama was going to burn some part of Byron. Joey then got scared and kept getting in front of Byron so Mama couldn't burn him. When she got Joey away she lit a match but Joey ran over and blew out every match that Mama lit. So Byron never got burned. Since their dad only paid for groceries at one time Byron and Kenny thought they were on welfare but then found out they weren't. A few days later Kenny found Byron in a tree behind the grocery store with a full bag and an empty bag of Swedish cream cookies. When Kenny realized what Byron had done it was too late because he couldn't tell on him since he had eaten some of the cookies. A few days later, Byron came home with his hair straightened and permanent red gunk in his hair. Wilona was in shock because she and Daniel had told Byron not to put that stuff in his hair. Wilona knew he had gotten the stuff from Buphead because he was the only other kid with hair like that. Daniel then shaved all Byron's hair off! A few weeks later the Watsons started packing for Birmingham. They were going to Alabama to see Wilona's family. They decided that Byron would stay with Grandma Sands for the whole summer and maybe the school year. The family drove straight through all the way to Alabama. While they were down south the kids went swimming and Kenny almost got pulled under but Byron saved him. Joey went to Sunday school with some friends she had made. Then there was a loud boom. A bomb had gone off at the church. Joey ended up being safe because she had followed Kenny home. Wilona and Daniel decided not to leave Byron in Alabama. When they went home Kenny decided to give his dinosaurs to Rufus and Cody (Rufus's little brother). The Watsons lived there lives like they had before they went to Birmingham. The bombs going off at church made them rethink about there lives and feel good that they had everyone still in their family. I thought that this book was really a good book and I would reccomend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Adventures Continue
I am really enjoying the Left Behind: The Kids Live-Action audio series. Well-acted and every episode has captured my attention. As an adult, one of the reasons which drew me to the audio series is because LaHaye and Jenkins intertwines the Left Behind universe and its characters together, so if you are reading or listening to the audio series of Left Behind, I highly recommend listening to the Left Behind: The Kids for a little bit more in-depth coverage of recurring characters.

A very good book and the CD by Suzanne Scheniman is outstanding! It's geared toward children, but even adults will listen over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars And poetry to boot!
Maas does a fine job in explaining to children why it's important to sleep. He writes in rhyme, and the colorful funny pictures add to the entertainment.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Really Bad
I have got to say that is is one of the worst books I have ever read. I picked it to read off a summer reading list when i was 10 just because i liked the title. All it is, is a girl tries to save her brother when everyone is leaving their island, and they get left behiend. Spoiler ahead.
4-0 out of 5 stars Island of the Blue Dolphins/Movie
I've always loved this movie; I guess the main reason is, I'm a big lover of dogs and when I first viewed Island of the Blue Dolphins, it was the dog (in it)which grabbed my interest. Maybe he reminded me of Walt Disney's Old Yeller; guitly as charged. Loved that mutt, too. At any rate..
4-0 out of 5 stars Journey through the Island of the Blue Dolphins
This book offers an insight to the world of an Indian girl left to fend for herself on a deserted Island off the coast of California. She learns how to survive by going against her cultural traditions such as making weapons. She also had to learn survival techniques to be able to eat and take shelter. This was an interesting book and I would recommend it to students and teacher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute best fun family entertainment
If you still like to read as a family and have kids in the middle to low elementary grades, this is the book for you.The characters are fun and the observations that the Director of Ranch Security, Hank the Cowdog, make are amazingly right on, given HIS perspective on life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Mutt Who Steals Your Heart
He's homely, he's not too bright, and he loves to boss around his pal, Drover. But as brilliantly portrayed by writer/narrator John R. Erickson, Hank the Cowdog is also loyal, brave, and downright hilarious. This first story in a series of several dozen, 'The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog' introduces us to Hank, and it isn't long before you get the impression that Mr. Erickson is a keen observer of dogs. Hank's misadventures will have not just the kids laughing, but the adults in your family as well. At one point, my sons owned a few dozen Hank the Cowdog cassettes and we spent many an hour listening along with them at Hank's antics. But along with all that laughter, we were always pleased at the subtle moral values the stories teach. So pull up a chair and listen along as John Erickson takes you into the 'tight circle' of Hanks' world. This is a 'can't miss' selection for children of all ages. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hank the Cowdog vs Harry Potter... hmmmmmmmm.
Okay, first, I want to tell you that Hank is the best book out there. Harry Potter is #2, The Chronicles of Narnia #3. The reasons why:

4-0 out of 5 stars simple and fun
Caps for Sale is a delightful tale that is simple but with the right amount of absurdity that kids love. The repetition of words and the copycat element (when the monkeys imitate the peddler's actions)is entertaining for very young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funner than I even remembered!
In searching reviews to find great books, I struggled to remember if I liked this one as a kid!I remembered the cover, but not the story! When it came, I was delighted to find that I loved the story, and my son has a NEW favorite book!He grins ear to ear as soon as the peddler wakes up from his nap and discovers only one hat left on his head.My 20 month olddoesn't sit still from that point on in the story. He crouches so as to make monkey gestures and sounds. He wags his finger and says "tsk tsk tsk" just like the monkeys! He stomps his feet and waves his arms just like the monkeys! The monkeys are so mischievous, and I think my son relates! LOL!All in all, the little copycat monkeys throw their hats down to the peddler when he gets angry enough at their taunting to throw his hat down on the ground! It is very cute. There isn't variety in the illustrations as the same vintage colors are used on every page, but the story is so strong that I have to give this one 5 stars!Enjoy!I still do!

5-0 out of 5 stars Caps for Sale.........Caps for Sales......Caps for 50 cents!
"Caps for Sale" by Esphyr Slobodkina is a marvelous children's book. An ingenious plot that I remember from my childhood. Now I am enjoying it again with my children. I was always fascinated by how he balanced those hats. The illustrations are quite simple but intriguing. Just looking at Pezzo with all those hats piled one on top of another is more interesting than many of the high tech special effects I have seen in today's movies. Sometimes the simple way is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughters love these tapes
My daughters, ages 9 and 5, frequently listen to these books on tape as they go to sleep. The Junie B. stories are very amusingly told from the 5/6 year old perspective. My girls have heard all of these tapes multiple times and it has spurred my older daughter to reread the books. The narrator's voice may be grating to an adult ear, but that seems appropriate for the Junie B. character.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones Collection: Books 17-20
I gave this only one star as I didn't actually read it. I thought I was ordering books for my grand-daughter, but it turned out to be audio tapes. I paid over $12. for it, but was only refunded $7. Extra fees were added that weren't there when I purchased.I wrote to Amazon about not wanting a refund, but wanting the actual books, I got NO RESPONSE. I will never order from Amazon again, I am very disappointed with the way this was handled. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
What a refreshing change to hear Pooh in his native tongue!I am a great fan of Disney movies but Pooh is something special in this wonderful audio version of the timeless stories. My 5 year old listens to this tape all the time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic production of classic tales!
My 3 1/2 year-old son and I absolutely love this cassette on a number of levels! The acting is great: lively without being over-the-top, convincing without being melodramatic. The cast brings out the humor of Milne's writing beautifully.I have to admit that I was not a Milne fan before purchasing this; I just didn't 'get' it.After listening to this cassette, I realized why: Winnie the Pooh is marketed here in the U.S. as an early childhood character/series.But it's not.The stories, the humor, the characters, and the language all are aimed at children about the age of Christoper Robin, who must be atleast 5, *and* at their parents.Ie there are elements that a child would never get, but I do, and so both my preschooler and I understand at our levels.Other fantastic aspects: great sound quality, sound effects, choice of stories. One point: Because of the British accents and idioms, this products works best for a patient and interested child. Also, for the preschooler (such as mine), it required that I listen with him the first few times until he understood the storyline well enough to follow without me.But don't let this discourage you. From the start, my child enjoyed the different voices (especially piglet) and sound effects. The subtlety only means that he doesn't get bored with it -- after even the 30th time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Say "Ho" for the wonderful Pooh!
This amazing dramatization of the Pooh books is performed by a marvelously talented group of British entertainers who truly bring the Pooh characters gently and lovingly to life. As for this tape, I finally got this figured out. This is part of a four-tape program that represents the complete two-book Winnie-the-Pooh story collection, except the stories are out of order (probably so that they would fit equally on the tapes). Book 1, "Winnie-the-Pooh," is represented by "Pooh Goes Visiting" (stories in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10) and "Piglet Meets a Heffalump" (stories: 5, 6, 7, 8). Book 2, "The House at Pooh Corner," is dramatized by "Tigger Comes to the Forest" (stories in order: 1 2, 4, 3, 9, 10) and "Pooh Invents a New Game" (stories 5, 6, 7, 8). When stories that depend on previous information are out of order, it gets confusing. My suggestion: Get the "Winnnie-the-Pooh" / "The House at Pooh Corner" gift pack, which is also four tapes (the same recordings), but in the proper order. ... Read more

I have read almost all of the Goosebumps Books, and this one always stands out in the crowd to me. It has a very good storyline and even though it is one of the more "unrealistic", it is one of my personal favorites.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kids review
I will tell you about the Goosebumumps Revenge of the lawn Gnomes! If you like scary books this is the book to read. It has Gnomes that attack people because the gnomes won't revenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed to know about politics and voting....
Everything I needed to know about politics I learned from Animal Farm. Every revolution contains the seeds of its own corruption and the next revolution; one privileged class is always replaced by another. As long as human nature is what it is, the need for revolution will not end and the manipulation of public sentiments will not end either. All the usual suspects are personified here in the gullible sheep, to the loyal "work horse" who falsely believes his work makes him valuable to the party, to the pigs who learn to take advantage of their positions for their own gain at the expense of the others. The governments tendency to use people for its own ends cannot be ignored in this all too familiar alegory. A must read before you vote.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indictment
An indictment of left-wing totalitarian regimes. If it weren't for Orwell, you'd think that totalitarianism only existed on the right.Orwell reminds us of the dangers of ideological thinking. In his case, this is pertains to Communist Russia and all the selling-out of values for the sake of selfish power. It could also pertain to COmmunist Cuba.People who try to rationalize or romanticize "revolutionaries" like Che Guevara shodl read this book as a starting point that most revolutions end up with firing squads, suppression of free speech and the oppression of the soul. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection
This book is worth it for the CD alone, which has beautifully sung versions of 23 of the songs from the book. It's not just for children- our whole family loves the CD! Unlike most kids' collections, this one doesn't have candied-down sugary kids' versions of the songs- it's real folk singers. The book itself has all the words, sheet music, and brief historical blurbs on all the songs, which are very interesting to read as well. We have several other collections of children's folk music, but this is by far the best. Every household- with and without kids- should own this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A musical Taste of American Culture!!!
We Loved this book, Not only because it includes each song's sheet music and a brief history of the origin of the song but the C.D. is amazing!!! The singersand musicians are superb. it features authentic mandolin, banjo and fiddle playing and is not sung in a patronizing mannor you hear on so many kid's C.D.sOur family from 2 to 46 love it and sing the songs over and over. High quality item for sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Folk Song Book I've Seen & The story behind the songs
This is the best collection of popular folk songs I have seen. You've always heard these songs, but at least I never knew all the words. I found this treasure in a stack of Girl Scout song books and I love the fact that it has a short paragraph about the history of each song. Great for sing alongs. The CD doesn't have all the songs that are in the book, but it has a good selection and they are sung in a catchy and upbeat way. For more entertaining and funny songs to get kids laughing and singing, I would also recommend "Noises from under the Rug". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Seuss's ABC
Dr Seuss's rhymes and periodic nonsense words will help young readers learn the alphabet and make it fun! Each letter of the alphabet, except X (which is used in the middle and at the end of words), are used at the beginning of words, making fun tongue-twisters that will always make kids giggle during the reading of this book. And what's better than fun learning?!?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
....but, of course, it is Dr. Suess. My two year old demands this book nearly every day and quotes from it liberally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Suess was a genius!
My son is 27 months old with a severe speech delay and without any true words.I don't know what it is about this book but he loves it and is so verbal when we read it.It is his favorite out of many books. We read it twice almost every night. He screams with glee at the mere sight of it.He actually sounds out the letters as we turn to each new page.He points to the bubbles, doughnuts and neckties for counting even though he cannot count yet but likes when I do. He does "nice" on my hair when we get to the "mighty nice mice".He quacks like a duck for the Quaking Quacker-oo.He "roars" when he sees the Red Rhinoceros and Yellow Yak.Each page is excitement to him even though we have read it countless times. He also has the board book (which is slightly different) and I let him play with that one so as not to ruin this one.I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful songs, rich in meaning and history
Wonderful songs and lyrics which celebrate our country's heritage.Do not purchase if you wish to obscure the Christian foundations of our nation's government and common life.Voices of children, sometimes gently accompanied by an adult.Instrumentation very appropriate to each piece.Well done.Five stars because no improvement can be imagined by me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wee Sing America
I grew up on this tape (it was still a tape back then, when we got it in about 1990).Every car trip, I jammed to the 50 states song and "Sweet Betsy from Pike."I loved these songs, and I still do, but when I learned them back at age 4, I didn't realize how often they would help me in the future.I can remember more than one time where one of the lyrics, or a blurb of one of the historic speeches scattered throughout the tape, helped me on an important test. These are songs that kids should know, and they will have fun listening to them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational...A Pure Delight For Children of All Ages
This CD and accompanying booklet contains the traditional patriotic songs we grew up with (sung mostly by children), as well as songs from the early pioneer and civil war eras (sung mostly by adults). There are also a few heart-stopping Negro spirituals which left my heart pounding! They were absolutely beautiful!!...terrific for rekindling the patriotic spirit in all of us. I would also consider this a wonderful educational tool for those who are studying American History. The quality of sound and performance is exceptional. I felt as if I were transported back in time as I listened to this collection with my children. This is sure to become a family heirloom.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wicked Awesome
The plot of Wicked is simple. It is the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West, or Elphaba as she is called in the book. This is her life story all the way up to meeting Dorothy and her tragic ending.By seeing the movie the Wizard of Oz, you learn to hate the witch but when reading this novel you fall in love with her life and realize that she isn't wicked.Elphaba and Glinda were school mates in college and after hating each other become best friends. Then Elphaba meets Fieryo, who later after he's married becomes her lover. But a tragic and unknown death comes upon him.Elphaba starts to deal with other enemies like her school tacher Madame Morrible and her greater enemy, the Wizard of Oz himself.Soon everyone is turning againsther including her own sister, Nessarose. While the book is insanely different than the broadway play, which was fantastic by the way, it is still a great read that I highly recommend along with Gregory Maguire's other novels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some Wicked Ambiguity
I tend to start off most posts by telling people how amazing such-and-such a book is and how they should read it when they get a chance. And in some respects Wicked is no different. It was a pretty amazing book. But I'm not sure that I feel comfortable telling people to go read it.Since my new occupation is a high school English teacher, I have been thinking about books in terms of being interesting to a high school reader. And while the story in Wicked might be interesting to a high school reader, Maguire's prose would elude most high school students, most college undergraduates, and probably a good portion of the general reading public.Which is not to say that it's bad.It isn't.It's wonderful, but it's not the type of thing that I would recommend to everybody. Not only do you have to have a stellar vocabulary (or be comfortable reading with a good pocket dictionary close at hand like me), you have to be willing to wade through a tremendous amount of ambiguous narrative to find where Maguire is tying to go with his characters.
1-0 out of 5 stars don't bother
Nice idea, horrible read. This is a disjointed story at best.None of the family and friends who have read the book this summer liked it.We all thought the story was too fragmented, bits and pieces, but either poorly or not connected together at all. ... Read more
