5-0 out of 5 stars Advice of sibling true - they get better and better
My little brother passed away at just 17 years old on July 25th, and I remember when I first started reading year 4, he said that each book only get's better and I have a long way to go. Yes, it took me nearly three months to read this novel, but not because I'm that slow of a reader. More likely, the story and characters were so interesting that I preferred dragging out each chapter to save myself from moving forward to year 5.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book- one you could read again and again
I LOVED THIS BOOK! It really IS a book you could read again and again. If I was stranded on an island for weeks and could only bring ONE book, I would DEFINETLY bring this book, without a doubt. It was thrilling, sad, funny, and beautifully written all at the same time. I admit, I cried. I did. Some people would think why cry but it was so touching, so beautiful, I loved it. It really is the BEST book I've ever read. I can't say anything bad about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ending!!!!!!!!!
This book was absouluely wonderful and a great ending!!!!!!!! What else can I say??? I loved it! READ IT

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fitting End!
As I read this, I could tell this was an entirely different chapter in the Baudelaire's lives than we'd previously been exposed to. Lemony Snicket made it rather clear that the questions we wanted answered wouldn't be answered and it would do no good to answer them. Though slightly disappointing, I think we're better off for it. This book drives the message of the entire series home, and is in so many ways an allegory to what we experience every day. I thought this book was more emotional and better written than all of the other books combined, and was pleased with the couple of things we DID find out, even though there are a million other questions left unanswered. To answer these questions would be to ruin this series and the entire point of these books, and though we thirst for answers, the truth is that answers to these questions would be disappointing and more mysterious than what we're left with.
5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect ending to this series

And just likethat, all their hopes for the harvest--for this year and next--are dashed.Hunger sets in quickly. The beaches are stripped of edible seaweed, the shore isemptied of fish, desperate souls even chew on grass for the nourishment. As hercommunity falls apart, Nory scrambles to find food for her family. Meanwhile, the specter of America lurks, where, the word is, no one is ever hungry, andhorses carry milk in huge cans down cobblestone streets. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The English holocaust
It seems uniquely challenging. The idea of making a readable children's book out of something so bleak and depressing as the Irish Potato Famine.Yet as an author, Giff has never shied away from difficult subjects.Whether you're following the trials of a 1870 German immigrant to Brooklyn in "The House of Tailors", or a 1940's Hungarian escapee in "Lily's Crossing", Giff has become one of those go-to historical fiction writers. With an emphasis on immigration, emigration, and forced transplantation, her books strain to find a balance between absolute historical accuracy and something your ten-year-old would actually (willingly) pick up on their own.Personally, when I was ten years of age I wouldn't have picked up "Nory Ryan's Song" for all the gold in King Solomon's mines. For those children that have strong stomachs and even stronger nerves, however, the book is a distinctly well-written explanation of why many of us in America sport Irish-American heritage.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great historical fiction!
Most students know that the Irish potato famine killed millions of people, but they may not understand any more than that.Nory Ryan's Song takes students back to Ireland in 1845 and shows them what life was like. The oppression of the English was a terrible problem for the Irish at that time. The Great Hunger killed many, but it is also the reason that many Irish came to America. It took great strength for them to make the journey. It is an important book for children to read.It helps explain what really happened and what life was like for these people.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Ireland Tale -- a review by Kira, age 9
In Ireland in 1845, Nory's friends, the Neelys, can't pay the rent, so they get kicked out of their house! Nory wants to try to save the Neelys, but just as she can, they are gone. Now she must work for the scary Anna Donelly, while everyone's potatoes have just gotten poisoned by strange creatures from another world! Nory's family starts starving -- what can they do!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book!
I have been reading books since I was 2 years old and this is one of the best books i have read. It dosn't matter who the auther is or how old he is it just matters if you like the book. I'm 12 now and like I said this book is really, really good. The authur did A good job and that is why it is a new york times best seller!
5-0 out of 5 stars Eragon the best
Eragon is one of the best fantasy books I've ever read so far.It has all of the qualities of a fantasy book I look for.Compared to Harry Potter it has a great story line with a quick learning character. It has battles, magic, dragons, and monstrous creatures.Christopher Paolini is one of the best authors I've heard of, because he uses great imagery, awesome descriptions, and he keeps you intrigued through the whole book.I recommend this book to any fantasy lover adult, teen, or child.I do understand that this is one of the best accomplishments among someone of young age. So if you love fantasy or you just want a classic in motion take up Eragon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the hype!
I purchased and read this book just after it first came out to rave reviews and a New York Times Bestseller ranking.I was extremely dissappointed. There is a reason that there are not many well renowned 18 year old authors out there. The writing is poor at best - definitely the work of someone who is just learning the art.The story is entertaining at times, but as many other reviewers have mentioned, it is entirely unoriginal. This book is fine for the younger child but is not in the class of Paul Park's Princess of Roumania, The Golden Compass trilogy or Harry Potter as books that transcend the line between children's and adult literature.I did not read the second book and have no intention of doing so. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A revival of the series!
The previous years of the show has been a little dry. With Blackgaard dead, Jason off doing mission work outside the US, Jack and Johanne happily married, and Eugene and Katrina virtually Ignored, nothing was really happening on the show. Until now :) Kids' Radio is jammed with the singals of a Big Media Giant, someone breaks into Whit's End, a few kids run into a hacker on the Internet, and Jason returns to Odyssey. All of the sudden, things are ALIVE in Odyssey!! The series has abandoned the idea of split-episodes (the contraversial 15 minutes programs of the last few albums) and has started focusing on it's main characters for the last 13 years -- Whit, Tom and Connie. Plus, it's starting to sound fresh again...and few series, Radio-Tv or otherwise, can sound so alive and full of ideas after so long. So, hat's off to the new, Improved Adventures in Odyssey!! Keep it up!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting Better
Unlike the current trend of Adventures in Odyssey where the quality of the shows were going down, this album presents a small promise of a return to the normal Adventures in Odyssey writing. With the introduction of a new villian, and the start of some long term arc episodes, The Big Picture hopefully will mark the upswing in Odyssey writing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Im a bird
Im a bird.Eldest was a really good book, but the 1st book, Eragon, was much better.Eldest had a lot less action, and it took too much time talking about Eragons studies, and less about anything else about the Varden or Dwarves. The side story about Roran, Eragons cousin, was more exciting. As it got further towards the end, it was much more interesting and had more action, and was easier to read.the end of the book made me want to read the 3rd book because it left many things unanswered, like who the third dragon egg will hatch for.It was an overall great book, but not enough action in it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawn, Yawn, Yawn.....
Well, I picked up Eragon because I heard it was pretty good. I was in the need of an original book, so I figured I would give it a try. It turned out ok. I was impressed with the age of the author, but was also dissapointed on how much of his ideas were not original. Still, there was something fun about a jedi dragon rider.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creative and inspiring
I was partly prejudiced when I first picked up Eragon, having read about the authors age of only 15 when he wrote the book. I expected something much more amature than what I read.I was amazed how he spun such a wonderful tale, so wonderfully descriptive, exciting, and created an endearing main character that had many flaws, and LOTS of room to grow.Paolini has a lot of natural talent and has only begun to explore his potential.I hope he will continue writing long after this trilogy is over.

4-0 out of 5 stars It had tons of action!
I liked By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman because it has a lot action. It's set in 1849. The main characters names are Jack and Praiseworthy. The book starts on a ship that's racing another ship to California. Jack hides a pig so the cook can't make Sunday dinner out of the pig. Jack and Praiseworthy get robbed several times. They go to the mining camps and try to strike it rich. I like the part where Jack and Praiseworthy go propecting. I recommend this book to ages 9 and up. If you like adventure and the Gold Rush, you would like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I ground in a few acorns for flavor."
BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON! is written for younger readers but is a delightful light read even for adults, who will get through this book in one sitting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
By the Great Horn Spoon! is a wonderful and entertaining book for ALL ages. This book can be used in the classroom when covering the Gold Rush period or it can be read for leisure. The story is about a young lad and his dreams and quest for gold.He has a noble cause and he learns valuable lessons from an unexpected source.I would definitely highly recommend this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wild River
There are three brothers and their names Jason, Ethan, Abraham. The three brothers' own a saw mill in Dawson. One day this man named Donner took the saw mill away from the three brothers and he wanted to the brothers' to sell the saw mill to him. So Jason was reading in the news paper about a race to Nome. The winner of the race will get 20,000 thousand dollars. Nome is located in Canada. Jason got a hold of a good friend her name is Jamie. So Jamie comes down the Yukon on a steam boat. She and Jason all that night got together and checked the canoe out to see if it was in good condition. They packed their boat all up with their stuff. Jason and Jamie took the canoe to the starting point and got in. The gun went boom! Jamie and Jason got in fist place going down the Yukon. They ran into a big cotton tree so they had to go around it. They were racing against Donner, Donner cut down a Burch tree and the trunk of the tree put a hole in their canoe. So they made a raft and went up stream and traded the raft for a Burch wood canoe. Jamie and Jason entered the ocean and got a kayak from the Eskimos. The two of them went down the ocean. They got out and ran towards the building. I'm not going to tell you what happens. If I tell you I'll ruin the end of the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Race
It's about a boy named Jason and his brothers, living in Dawson City. They have their own sawmill called Hawthorn Brothers Sawmill, where they work to make a living. One day all of the brothers were at a place eating, and a guy starts to kick this dog sitting there, so Ethan, the oldest brother, tells the man not to kick the dog. They got into a pushing match, but somebody in the crowd yelled at Ethan not to fight the guy, because he was pushing a former boxer Sydney Mauler. Then somebody said they should have a boxing match, and they had one two weeks later. Ethan ended up winning and becoming famous. He stopped working at the mill and started to drink and gamble a lot. He was winning everyday, and then one day he started to lose, and everyday he lost more and more until he was broke. Then a lawyer took their mill by having Ethan sing a paper when he was drunk, so they lost their mill. Jason's old friend Jamie Dunavant comes back to Dawson City and they fall in love. Jason told her he was going to Nome for to make money to buy the mill back. Jamie then found a contest. It was a race to Nome for two people and $20,000 the prize. It would be able to buy the mill back. So can Jamie and Jason win the race and get the mill back? You'll have to read the book to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most intense volume of AIO!!!
An old nemesis, a diabolical plot and a battle between the forces of good and evil - in Odyssey?! An unprecedented wave of criminal activity has broken over the town, and its citizens are stunned. Thefts, broken windows, graffiti...who on earth is behind this outbreak of Lawlessness?
5-0 out of 5 stars Darkness Before Dawn
this is the best A.I.O set ever. this set is very deep and makes for good discussion in summary: there is an out break of vandalism in odyssey. everyone thinks the bones of wrath are behind it. the church is hit. whits end is hit. jack has more weird dreames. jason gets an inspector to investigate the under- ground railroad tunnel under whits end. What he gets is the wicked Philip Glossman. Glossman has a scandal to have a recal election to kick tom out of office. we learn that Dr. Blackgaard is behind it. in " the return" dr. Blackgaard returns to odyssey to announce his candidacy for the election. Richard maxwell returns to odyssey to stop Blackgaard. maxwell finds out about the Dr's true plan: BLOW UP WHITS END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific - and it has depth
Those who have experienced the conclusion of the "Novacom Saga" recently have heard Adventures in Odyssey at it's best, but if absolute pure suspence is what you want, then I recommend this series. It has been building for a long time, every so often Dr. Regis Blackgaard would appear on the horizon, dark and sinister, first in Odyssey with his own "amusement house" for kids (and a nefarious effort to steal a top secret computer program from Mr. Whittaker-thwarted by Richard Maxwell who makes another appearance in this album)and then in Chicago where he actually kidnapped Connie, and finally in "A Name Not a Number" when he returned to Odyssey. 5-0 out of 5 stars The return of John Avery Whittaker!
When John Avery Whittaker returns from a lengthy stay in the Middle East, the entire town of Odyssey turns out for a joyous homecoming celebration complete with fanfare and fireworks. But for Jack, Whit's arrival means an uneasy reunion-and a tough decision about the future. Then, the phrase "Fools rush in" takes on a new significance for Eugene when he neglects to seek God's direction in his relationhip with Katrina.

If you've listen to to Adventures in Odyssey as long as I have, you'll LOVE this audio cassette. A special person (don't want to let you know who it is. It would spoil the surprise.)left Odyssey a few years ago and has FINALLY returned. Connie Kendall wanted to make this a SPECIAL day for this special person and instead of being at the airport, the ceremonies, ect. when this person arrived, she was just late for all of these things. She finnally tracked the special person down and he was asleep, do to exaustion, she was so sad, frustrated, mad, you get the point. She was cring, and she woke up the special person, she was so glad to hug the special person. If you want more information on Adventures in Odyssey, e-mail me at AWANABoy@aol.com Thanks! ... They now have become orphans. The orphans live with Mr. Poe until he can find a guardian for them. He finally places them with their nearest relative, Count Olaf, who is either their third cousin four times remove.Count Olaf, a dirty man with one eyebrow, shiny eyes, and a tattoo of an eye on his ankle, turns out to be a greedy and mean actor who wants the huge Baudelaire fortune for himself. When he finds that he will not receive it, he treats the children poorly and forces them to do difficult chores for himself and his acting group.

I read this book because a friend of mine recommended. In first part I was so bored that I almost slept. Then when I tried to sleep an exciting scene came out. It was a eye-opener. It was about that Count Olaf was yelling at Baudelaires. They cooked, but olaf hated it. In first part I thought that olaf was a good man. That's why it woke me up. Another thing is that the pictures seemed very good and real. Even though they were black and white I liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bad Beginning
A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket is a great, yet surprising book. In this book, there are three children named Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire. They are the main characters, or the protagonists. Violet, the oldest likes to invent and build thing, she is very smart. Klaus, who is the middle child is also very smart and likes to examine creatures in tide pools and also likes to read. Sunny, who is only an infant loves to bite anything she can get her hands on. The problem starts out, when they figure out their house has burned down, and their parents have died. The Baudelaire family is very wealthy and they lived in a mansion with a huge library. Violet, Klaus and sunny have to stay at Mr. Poe's house, who is a very good friend of their parents. The children decide they do not like it there and learn that they are leaving and staying with their distant relative named Count Olaf. Count Olaf is the enemy or the antagonist in this story, who they have never heard of. When they arrive at his house, it looked very strange and bent out of shape. Also when they met him he acted very weird as if he was hiding something. He made them do all of the chores and make dinner for him and for when all his friends come over to rehearse lines for their play. They children started getting suspicious, when Count Olaf slaps Klaus on the face and one of his friends mention he should try to steal their fortune. The children try to tell Mr. Poe, but he does not believe that Count olaf would do such a thing. Since he won't believe them, they do a little research and find out that you can only get someone's fortune by marriage. Not to long after, Count Olaf suggests that they should be in a play with him, and violet would be the bride, and Klaus and Sunny would work backstage. Now I can't tell what happens next, so you will just have to read this book, put together the clues, and figure it out for yourself. I suggest this book, because I thought it was very good, and I was never bored. I actually read it in one day. It also has a good lesson to it, which is to be thankful for what you have, because when you least expect it, you could have nothing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Twisting book that can probbably hurt the mind
This book was very interesting, however it had too many things going on at once. It was hard for me to follow. It had a lot of action, but it was confusing and hard to follow. I like the red king series, but this was the worst of the five. Plus, it was a total Harry Potter wannabe. If you liked this book, the GREAT! Go pick up a harry potter book instead. You'll like it 10x as much. Trust me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Through The Years

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book that got me reading fantasy.
I read this book shortly after it came out.I just fell in love with fantasy after that.
5-0 out of 5 stars They read it again and again.
This is a book that has become a family classic. It started with my daughters. They loved it and read it over and over. One tells me she still has her book and can hardly wait to introduce her daughter to the book.I ordered a new copy for my oldest grandson and he liked as much as the girls did.He then read it to his younger brother.A few days later I peeped into their room and found the youngest with big brothers book and he was reading it for himself.A book that keeps them reading has to be a great book.
