5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book for babies
I already knew, having given it to my two-year-old neighbor, what a great book this is, but I was not prepared for what a perfect baby book it can be. When I read the hardcover version to my seven-month-old granddaughter, she held very still and seemed to anticipate each rereading. The traditional story itself is baby-fare, with billy goat voices in three sizes and the fun repetition of "trip-trap, trip-trap", but some of Galdone's illustrations of large and clearly defined faces are appealing to babies too. When I visited my now ten-month-old amazing grandbaby, her mom told me this is her favorite book and she reads it to her almost every night. While I was reading it to her, every time we came to the full-page picture of the billy goat's face, she leaned down and put her cheek against the paper.

4-0 out of 5 stars "A Review of Paul Galdone's "Three Billy Goats Gruff"
On this page, and on one other page that I know, Amazon has accidentally put the reviews of different versions of classic fairytales together. In this case, you will see reviews of more than one version of "The Billy Goats Gruff".
5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old wants this read to him over and over
5 stars based on the enjoyment value for my 3 year old son. One of the "professional" reviews here is negative about another version, then recommends this one. Looks as though Amazon goofed. A couple of reader reviews here obviously refer to an audio version of the story. Anyway, Paul Galdone's version has appealing illustrations, follows the traditional story and is fun for kids. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Two Princesses of Bamarre book review
In the book, The Two Princesses of Bamarre, two princess sisters, named Addie and Meryl, live in the castle of Bamarre. Meryl becomes ill with the Gray Death and her father, the king of Bamarre, trys to save her by visiting the elf queen and asking her if she knows the cure, but fails. Meryl's sister, Addie, knows that it is up to her to find the cure to not only save her sister, but all the ill citizens of Bamarre. I enjoyed reading about Princess Addie over coming her fears to save her sister. The plot was not predictable, but at some points, it was a little obvious. Gail C. Levine also as written The Wish wich is as exsiting as The Two Princesses of Bamarre.

5-0 out of 5 stars The hill of fire
I thought this book was really good.If you read my report l think you should read the book.It is about a man and his boy.His father is a farmer and one day the boy comes out and helps his father. Then they hit the top ofa volcano.Which is in the ground and it destroys everything. Then they rebuild everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Good
Hill of Fire tells the true story of a Mexican farmer who encounters the beginnings of a volcano in his corn field. The vocabulary is very easy, and yet the author captures the mood of the sleepy village that was changed forever by El Monstruo. I recommend this book to teachers of grades 2 and 3 and to children who are just moving away from picture books.

The book was great and I think it would be a good book to write about. It's each girl's point of view of their life. This would be a good young ladies book.
5-0 out of 5 stars best book ever
The book I'm doing this book review on is Notes from a Liar and Her Dog written by Gennifer Choldenko. Antonia MacPherson is a 12 year girl who thinks she was adopted. Her mom doesn't believe anything she says. Her art teacher, who likes being called just Carol, believes her and gives her a chance. She tries to change Ant and make her start telling the truth. I read this book because it sounded funny. I recommend this book to anyone who likes funny books.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best book in the series
I must confess that I was very surprised at the quality of this book. The others in the series were good, but this one was spectacular. It is definitely deserving of the Newbery award it won. This books is similar to the Return of the King in that it is the climax of the series and everything is finally resolved. Also similar is that the forces of good make a final march of the land of the dark lord, overthrowing him with the help of a evil creature not entirely meaning to help them (ala Gollum).
5-0 out of 5 stars High Fantasy
Lloyd Alexander won a Newbery Medal for this final book in his Prydian Chronicles. This modern fantasy book is one of my favorites and tackles the basic confrontation of good and evil.Strongly based on Celtic and Welsh mythology, Lloyd Alexander creates the kingdom of Prydia.Throughout the series, the assistan t pig-keeper, Taran, encounters the evil forces of Arawan, the Death Lord.Paralleling the story of King Arthur, Alexander's hero believes himself to be nothing but an insignificant farm hand until he rises to greatness at the climax of the novel.

Editorial Review

After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie. They're standing on the toilets, still, hiding until the museum closes and their adventure begins.Such is the impact of timeless novels . . . they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale of how Claudia and her brother run away to the museum in order to teach their parents a lesson. Little do they know that mystery awaits! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great so far. It is full of mystery and adventure. Twelve year old Claudia has run away with her brother Jamie to the Metropilan Muesum of Art. Claudia decided to bring along her brother Jamie with her because he has a lot of money. While they are there at the muesum, Claudia and Jamie come across a great mystery in the muesum that is all over the newspaper. If you would like to find out what this great mystery read this book! Teachers it is also a great book to read with your class. Also edutactional!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not mixed-up about how good this book is
This Newbery award winner is about Claudia and Jamie, two kids who run away from home. They leave the suburbs and head to New York where they stay in none other than the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They sleep in an old bed in the French section. They hide in the bathrooms. They even take baths in a fountain (and get paid for it, sort of)!But when a new exhibit comes in, the fun really starts. The Angel is beautiful, exquisite, and mysterious. The question: is the sculpture really done by Michelangelo? Claudia and Jamie will do anything to find out. I think I loved the book mostly because I really liked the idea of living in a museum. This book is good for all ages, but I expected it to be longer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story
I remember this from my own childhood favorites and am now reading it with my daughter--

4-0 out of 5 stars Problems With Judy Blume
I like Fudge, I really do.But sometimes these books, as much as I love them, get on my nerves. My biggest problem with Double Fudge is Blume's portrayal of homeschoolers. Homeschoolers are not dorky and weird, these are stereotypes, that, though often funny can be too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be ignored
This book is a tiny slice of genius. It can't be judged by a descriptive birthing scene in the first chapter, or the descriptive "climax" toward the end. What it should be judged by is the wonderful writing, the spot-on capture of dialect, what it's like to live on a farm under rules that seem foreign to us - but that are explained through prose rather than preaching. We are allowed to see a young boy growing into a man, and the responsibilities he accepts at such a young age are remarkable. Today's children could take a lesson from 12-year old Robert Peck. Less video games, less television, more hard work (reading and learning is included here, not just farm work).
5-0 out of 5 stars "It will leave you better than it found you."
I quoted a reviewer from the jacket of the book, because this short novel is full of dignity and plain old goodness. It is a testament to simple living before there were video games and cell phones. It is about poor people who are rich in the blessings of life, and how they meet the challenges of being poor with integrity and self-reliance.This is not for those who read superficially or those who are interested in plot only.It is a gorgeous read, full of lessons to be learned.
1-0 out of 5 stars Why make young readers' lives more miserable than they already are?
Adults would never choose to read this garbage. It would be seen as masochistic [...] and too depressing to bother with. Raise an animal, get attached to it, but the reality of farm life is that if it can't successfully breed, you personally will have to butcher it. Heck, why should your dad do it for you, when we can reinforce that valuable childhood lesson of "Life sucks and then you die"?

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful way to hope when you are down
This is a very simple book that could be read quickly but gets a very important message across when life seems to be weighing you down.It really gives you some hope for the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Hope for the Flowers REALLY means!
Most of the reviews for HOPE FOR THE FLOWERS are surface-level at best. While kind and generally descriptive of the prose, they mostly fail to meet the essence of the book and its meaning for now and when it was written.1973 to 2005- it still sends the message that those of you who are 20 or 30 something should re-think buying your McMansion in the burbs. But, like me, you will not fully understand what Stripe saw until you reach the age of 40+.Only then will you begin to see that you only have so many breaths and days on this planet and there is indeed, "nothing at the top!" (...)

3-0 out of 5 stars Hippie-esque, But That's Not Totally A Bad Thing
Written in a time when metaphorical escapist novels like Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Watership Down were moving from cult hits to mainstream, this equally anthropomorphic book about the love between two caterpillars, Yellow and Stripe, is a bit odd, but even those not stoned or on acid can find a pleasant message about overcoming the odds by doing your best. This book hasn't aged well but it holds the aura of the era it came out of and lets you sense the values and ideals of that age. Once you get past the strangeness of the fact you're reading a love story/self-help book about two amourously-aroused insects, it does get emotionally touching... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A funny and weird story about school
This book is about a school with a teacher who is not very smart at all.She says things like "It matters what is on the inside" but what she means is wearing expensive underwear. The kids love her because class is very easy. One teacher is on the 19th floor, but there is no 19th floor. This book made me laugh because school is usually serious and this was just really funny.I would recommmend this book to kids who don't like school because it might make them relax and see that school can be funny too.JG ... Editorial Review

The tale of Taran, assistant pig keeper, has been entertaining young readers for generations. Set in the mythical land of Prydain (which bears a more than passing resemblance to Wales), Lloyd Alexander's book draws together the elements of the hero's journey from unformed boy to courageous young man. Taran grumbles with frustration at home in the hamlet Caer Dallben; he yearns to go into battle like his hero, Prince Gwydion. Before the story is over, he has met his hero and fought the evil leader who threatens the peace of Prydain: the Horned King. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this series and you'll say "Harry who?"
Never mind that Potter guy, this is much better!I am a children's librarian and I've long wanted to read this series.I had all the paperbacks on my personal bookshelf for years and often picked them up then put them back down.I have three children's series I want to read before I die: "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper (read it a few years ago--very good); The Narnia series (I'm trying desperately to get through "The Horse and His Boy"); and "The Chronicles of Prydain."I am thrilled to be able to tell you I recently finished this series.I just loved it!"The Book of Three" is one of the best in the series because it introduces the reader to most of the wonderful main characters. My favorites were Taran, the creature Gurgi (loved his way of talking, especially his fondness for "crunchings and munchings."), the bard Fflewddur Fflam, Prince Gwydion, Dalben and Coll.Eliwony sometimes got on my nerves but I learned to like her.I'm so glad this was a series of five books rather than one huge one.I devoured them one right after the other but if it had been one big book I may not have read it.I also loved the last book in the series, "The High King" because everything came together. One of my other favorites was "Taran Wanderer."The good vs. evil in this is so powerful. The characters, even minor ones, held this together. It is so very apparent that Taran grows up in these books.Eliwony does too but Taran is a likeable young boy and an even more likeable young man.The writing throughout the series is exquisite.I loved the line "...memory lives longer than what it remembers."

5-0 out of 5 stars Taran, Gurgi, Eionwy, Flewdur.... It was great to go back to PRYDAIN!
I haven't read these books in 20-years, but it was worth every minute. Once I started I couldn't put them down and I was right back in the mix with the Assistant Pig Keeper. I will definitely be reading them again in a few months and hope to pass them on to others who will enjoy them as immensely as I have.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book
The Book of Three is the first in a series of children's fantasy novels that I find highly entertaining. The Book of Three (like the others in the series) is set up like a fairy tale: there are definable good and bad characters marked by their morality and purposes. It involves heroic battles, adventure, magic, and an array of brilliant characters whose growth underlines the epic portion of the tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was moved.
This was a fitting completion to the trilogy.Messenger finally brings in the plot elements of The Giver as well as its themes, entwining them with Gathering Blue, so we can see a land where spirit and physical combine into something greater. However, a minor warning:some scenes in this final novel are so gruesome they would be inappropriate for younger readers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great follow-up story to the Giver and Gathering Blue
This was a great mysterious tear jerker. It really makes you think. I have read the first two books "The Giver" and "Gathering Blue" so I'm not sure how it would read without having read the first two. I would love to have a 4th story to tie in the characters more.

2-0 out of 5 stars It is a must NOT read!
I DID NOT LIKE this book. It was sooooo retarted and i would not recommend it to anyone, ever. I had to read it for school and it was very hard to get through it, I'll tell you that. But, it was ok... in that it was better then the other book we had to read and the book we had to read last year. Definetely. I have never read the giver or gathering blue so I can't tell you how it relates to those but if it's like this one, I wouldn't recommend those either. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Journey of a girl
I read this when I was young, and I remember feeling like I had found a friend. In this book, I found a character who struggled with the same issues with family members, self worth, impossible crushes, and God that I did.But instead of dwelling on the struggles, we see the difficult childhood of this girl pass.
2-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but not recommended for kids
This is a well written book, however, I feel I should point out several issues I have with this book, which seems to follow the formula of the "modern teen problem novel".This novel "explores difficult emotions" such as selfishness, jealousy, and alienation from God. All characters who are devoutly religious are portrayed as either uneducated or mean, and any "enlightened" characters or heroes are portrayed as not being religious.( Does anyone really know any Christians who go around , Bible-in-hand, accusing other women of "whoredom"?) And what modern teen "problem novel" would be complete without some sexual themes, and at least a brief discussion of menstruation ?At the book's end, our main character chooses to continue in her career after the birth of first child. Parents should also be advised that Sara Louise's "coming of age" includes rejecting religion.( Although, to be fair, the book does not portray Sara as a happy person, but I think this subtlety will be lost on children.)Judging by other reviews, most child readers did not pick up on the fact that Caroline was a much kinder and more likable person than Sara Louise. An adult reader who is wise to the anti-religious bias may enjoy the book ( if they're not grossed out by the idea of a 14 year old having a crush on a 70 year old man). If you are looking for a book about a normal child, with normal child feelings, dealing with her "perfect" sister, read Little House on the Prairie and leave this book on the shelf. Appropriate reading for adults, who can understand the bias against religion, but not at all recommended for children.
4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review on Jacob Have I Loved
Just recently, I have read the Newberry Medal-winning novel Jacob Have I Loved written by Katherine Paterson. This book describes the life of young, Sara Louise Bradshaw, the twin of the popular and more appreciated, Caroline Bradshaw, growing up on the small island of Rass. All her life, Louise felt as if Caroline has deprived her of everything: their family's love, her friends, and her dreams for a successful future. Then, when Captain Wallace - who had mysteriously returned after fifty years of disappearance - finds a way to obtain a scholarship for Caroline in Baltimore, Louise is left to tassel with her sharp-mouthed grandmother and take on the traditional job of a male as a waterman. Unfortunately, this did not satisfy the woman she was becoming. Louise must learn to fight past her jealousy of her sister's shadow and figure and find her way to place Caroling cannot reach. I learned of this book from a friend and found it interesting from their description. After reading, however, I realized it is very emotional and gets very deep into the feelings of jealousy and hatred. In addition, it also has a large use of vocabulary. So I would recommend it to anyone who is thirteen or older preferably to the female gender but some men may also find this story appealing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Going Solo Review
Going Solo is the great story that Roald Dahl adventured throughout his young life. Roald Dahl accomplished many things once he was able to do things on his own. Mainly the book is about himself traveling all over Europe and Africa just trying to experience as much as he could. He travels all over the bottom of Europe and works way down and around Africa staying at many non civilized villages and getting to know many natives. At the time he is working for the Shell Oil Company until he finally quits. In East Africa he also is endangered with a near fatal death with a Green Mamba , one of the most deadly snakes. Roald also has a passion for the air force, and ends up joining the RAF. Going Solo is one of the most adventurous books that I have ever read, with the nonstop climax's and so many near death experiences. This is a very descriptive book with so many heroic twist that can keep anyone's attention. Roald Dahl is very famous for most of his work such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but this book is amazing because this all actually happened to writer in real life. The greatest part about the Roald Dahl in Going Solo is that he never gave up, even after a plane crash that he should not have been able to live after. He was told that he would be blind for the rest of his life, but about a month later he started to gain his sight back. I feel that this book is a miracle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going Solo By Roald Dahl
I read the fantastic book named Going Solo by Roald Dahl. This book was an autobiography of Roald Dahl's life prior to and during World War II. The book explained many of his encounters with the enemy as a pilot for the Royal Air Force in Roald Dahl's personal view. There are an uncountable number of fascinating events that occur when he is a pilot. Some of them include when he receives a life threatening injury, going into a hardcore battle with no experience at fighting enemies, and getting out of a long-lasting dogfight where he was outnumbered 200 to 12. The other half of the book explained his thrilling adventures prior to the war when he worked for the Shell Company. Some of his experiences while working for the Shell Company included chasing a lion, saving a man from a deadly Black Mamba, and sighting a deadly Green Mamba enter his friends house.Every page of the book was full of plot and adventure, and I could not put this book down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable and Amazing Stories!
WOW! Going Solo, by Roald Dahl is an amazing and heart capturing book. Read this book if you love war stories. These stories are serious, funny, and keep you wanting more. I found the book almost impossible to believe during some points in the amazing novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cat's life
Beverly Cleary tells the charming story of a cat whose position as the beloved center of the family is upset by the arrival of a new baby. Her refusal to anthropomorphize the cat added to my appreciation of this book immensely. The theme of pet jealousy was particularly relevant for me just now since my wife and I have four cats and we are also expecting our first child.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a charming book !!!
I have the old edition with the Beatrice Darwin illustrations-- they are lively, witty, engaging -- and awfully cute. They go well with this book, which is also all of the above.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Miserable Mill
I think the Miserable Mill is a good book. It`s a good book because it`s funny. It is about how Violet, Klause, and Sunny have to work in a lumber mill till they come of age. Then Klause breaks his glasses and has to get nen ones, and when he gets new ones they hytotizes him.Count Olaf works there. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The supernaturlsts
I have never read an Artemis Foul book before but once I read the Supernaturlists I figured that he wrote pretty good books after all. The Supernaturlists is about a 14-year-old boy named Cosmo Hill. He is a runaway no sponsor. Him and his buddy Zig-zag ran and they were giver a 30 sec. head start because they have micro tiny trackers on them. But what they weren't expecting was he to catch up so fast. They were shocked and they fell to the ground. Zig-zag died and he was left there to die but the Supernaturlists found him. There was a little blue animal on his chest and he thought that it was sucking the life out of him and the supernaturlists killed it and he became one of them. But what they didn't know was that they were helping you, but if you want to know any more read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Supernaturalist
This book was awesome. It was about 14-year-old Cosmo Hill.In it he escapes from Clarissa Fraynes Orphanage for kids without parents. They are also called no sponsors. Anyway, when he escapes a boy named Stephen finds Cosmo.Stephen leads a team that finds and kills parasites. Parasites are little blue creatures that they think suck the life out of people. The tea consists of Cosmo, Stephen, Mona, and a Bartoli baby named Ditto. Bartoli babies are people that were experimented on by a man named doctor Bartoli. The babies are really small. Ditto is a 28-year-old in a 6-year-old body. I would recommend this book to anybody that likes fantasy books or books about the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a good book - worth the $7.99 you pay for it !!!
The Supernaturalist by Eoin Colfer, the author of the award-winning Artemis Fowl series, is set in Satellite City, United States, 2550, a world totally managed by machines. The main character, Cosmo, escapes from a brutal orphanage where he and other teenagers are essentially human guinea pigs. While escaping, he has a near death experience after he lands in an electrical generator. Lying in the electrical generator, supernatural parasites land on his chest and suck something out of him. Just as he is about to die, 3 people show up. They blast off the parasites with energy rods, and use a defillibrator to kick-start Cosmo's heart. That's where the real adventure begins.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frank Capra meets the Little Prince
These days, we can use a shamelessly heartwarming fable and that isexactly what "The Most Beautiful Gift" was to me. The book owessome of its atmosphere to Frank Capra's "feel good" movies but itis as modern as Stephen King's books. A lovely gift for children aged 6 to90. In Italy we got three more books by this guy and I hope they getpublished in the States too. The latest one is called "The LittlePrincess" and moved me to happy tears. I rate "Gift" 4 starsonly because "Princess" deserves a somewhat higher mark.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real treat ; at last, a well told tale.
I expected your usual sappy fable for dumb kids. Heck, was I surprised. This novel is witty, amusing, and a pleasure to read for children of ALL AGES(I'm 45). Well, even a sequel would be a nifty idea: I liked each and every character, and wanna know more about them! This guy Snow (a pseudonym, I gather from his posting) is real talented. Top-notch job, fella ... Read more
