A powerhouse sixth-grade Academic Bowl team from Epiphany Middle School; the art of calligraphy; the retirees of Century Village, Florida; a genius dog named Ginger; and a holiday production of "Annie" all figure heavily in the latest book by E. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most moving books I have read in a long time!
So I had this crazy idea: I'm going to read the Newberry Awards books. I was at my fiancé's school and they had a poster of past Newberry Award books and I had this epiphany: I was going to take some time and just read great young adult books!
4-0 out of 5 stars Teamwork Pays Off
I really liked this book because it was about different kids that worked together to meet a common goal. The characters were kids that I could relate to, and the plot moved along so you won't get bored. I would like to read other books by this writer and see if they are as good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great writer
This is the second middle grade book by Konigsburg that I've read. She's such a wonderful writer.

I love the beautiful illustrations in this book and the rhyming is perfect for phonemic awareness for preschoolers. It is the perfect amount of scary for 4 and 5 year olds. It is a short, spooky, read with gorgeous pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderfully scary, but not too much
I just discovered this book and took it home to my two year old and he loved it.

Editorial Review

Forced to leave her sunny Caribbean home for the bleak Connecticut Colony, Kit Tyler is filled with trepidation. As they sail up the river to Kit's new home, the teasing and moodiness of a young sailor named Nat doesn't help. Still, her unsinkable spirit soon bobs back up. What this spirited teenager doesn't count on, however, is how her aunt and uncle's stern Puritan community will view her. In the colonies of 1687, a girl who swims, wears silk and satin gowns, and talks back to her elders is not only headstrong, she is in grave danger of being regarded as a witch. When Kit befriends an old Quaker woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond, it is more than the ascetics can take: soon Kit is defending her life. Who can she count on as she confronts these angry and suspicious townspeople? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A bewitching story
This is one of my favorite books. I first read this book while in middle school and have re-read it so many times that I can recite some of the passages! The story of the girl who leaves her island home and must adjust to the harsh New England environment struck a chord with me, as I was a military kid and always moving from place to place. This story is about a girl who finds herself in a new environment that goes against everything she has ever learned or experienced, and she must learn who she is in order to survive this new land. It's also a romance story, and an intriguing story that shows what can happen when people become so closed-minded about what is "right" and "proper" that they refuse to look past a person's supposed subversive actions in order to really see or understand that person.Highly recommended reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good historical fiction...

4-0 out of 5 stars the witch of blackbird pond-elizabeth george spheare- by andra prior
I read the witch of blackbird pond.I didnt like or dislike this book.It had fantastic chapters an awful chapters. The most awfu scenes in this book are where everyone gets judgemental. The overall message in this book wasshard to figure out but i thought it was: never let someone judge you for who you appear to be.I would recomend this book to people who like adventurous historical fiction books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brian Coyne Miss.Weinstein English
Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire are at Briny Beach one day when Mr. Poe, a friend of their parents, arrives to tell them that their house has burned down, and that their parents have died in the fire. They now have become orphans. The orphans live with Mr. Poe until he can find a guardian for them. He finally places them with their nearest relative, Count Olaf, who is either their third cousin four times remove.Count Olaf, a dirty man with one eyebrow, shiny eyes, and a tattoo of an eye on his ankle, turns out to be a greedy and mean actor who wants the huge Baudelaire fortune for himself. When he finds that he will not receive it, he treats the children poorly and forces them to do difficult chores for himself and his acting group.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bad beginning but exciting story.
I read this book because a friend of mine recommended. In first part I was so bored that I almost slept. Then when I tried to sleep an exciting scene came out. It was a eye-opener. It was about that Count Olaf was yelling at Baudelaires. They cooked, but olaf hated it. In first part I thought that olaf was a good man. That's why it woke me up. Another thing is that the pictures seemed very good and real. Even though they were black and white I liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bad Beginning
A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket is a great, yet surprising book. In this book, there are three children named Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire. They are the main characters, or the protagonists. Violet, the oldest likes to invent and build thing, she is very smart. Klaus, who is the middle child is also very smart and likes to examine creatures in tide pools and also likes to read. Sunny, who is only an infant loves to bite anything she can get her hands on. The problem starts out, when they figure out their house has burned down, and their parents have died. The Baudelaire family is very wealthy and they lived in a mansion with a huge library. Violet, Klaus and sunny have to stay at Mr. Poe's house, who is a very good friend of their parents. The children decide they do not like it there and learn that they are leaving and staying with their distant relative named Count Olaf. Count Olaf is the enemy or the antagonist in this story, who they have never heard of. When they arrive at his house, it looked very strange and bent out of shape. Also when they met him he acted very weird as if he was hiding something. He made them do all of the chores and make dinner for him and for when all his friends come over to rehearse lines for their play. They children started getting suspicious, when Count Olaf slaps Klaus on the face and one of his friends mention he should try to steal their fortune. The children try to tell Mr. Poe, but he does not believe that Count olaf would do such a thing. Since he won't believe them, they do a little research and find out that you can only get someone's fortune by marriage. Not to long after, Count Olaf suggests that they should be in a play with him, and violet would be the bride, and Klaus and Sunny would work backstage. Now I can't tell what happens next, so you will just have to read this book, put together the clues, and figure it out for yourself. I suggest this book, because I thought it was very good, and I was never bored. I actually read it in one day. It also has a good lesson to it, which is to be thankful for what you have, because when you least expect it, you could have nothing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great decent family time fun
After getting hooked to a radio book I heard almost 3 years ago I decided to look for other Christian based audio book stories that I could enjoy with my son.I bought this for him and we have heard several so far.The stories are played out in a very real and tangible way.We have sat in bed with our eyes closed and it feels like you're in a theater.Of course it helps if you have surround sound but sounds just as good if not.Great for long trips in the car or to just play on a rainy day at home snuggled under the covers. This type of story telling awakens the imagination of children in a way that TV will never!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
Listening to the book in full theater format was very interesting and enjoyable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Narnia Radio Theatre - almost perfect
I do NOT enjoy audio books - I generally find them long and boring and would much rather use my own imagination than some actor's choice of cadence and emphasis. On the other hand, I loved (mostly) the BBC radio productions of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" which have become long road trip standards for our family.I have never found a comparable production until I discovered the The Chronicles of Narnia. The voices of the actors were VERY well done(with one exception) and the background sound effects and music were excellent and I found the connective narrative enough without being too much.On the other hand, I have read of the Narnia books so I may be unconsciously bridging gaps. Still, my husband, my son and my grandchildren have only read/seen "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" before hearing this set and had no problem with the other books, so the narrative is probably sufficient.I have two issues with the series which is why I awarded only 4 stars:

Editorial Review

Cimorene, princess of Linderwall, is a classic tomboy heroine with classic tomboy strengths--all of which are perceived by those around her as defects: "As for the girl's disposition--well, when people were being polite, they said she was strong-minded. When they were angry or annoyed with her, they said she was as stubborn as a pig." Cimorene, tired of etiquette and embroidery, runs away from home and finds herself in a nest of dragons. Now, in Cimorene's world--a world cleverly built by author Patricia C. Wrede on the shifting sands of myriad fairy tales--princesses are forever being captured by dragons. The difference here is that Cimorene goes willingly. She would rather keep house for the dragon Kazul than be bored in her parents' castle. With her quick wit and her stubborn courage, Cimorene saves the mostly kind dragons from a wicked plot hatched by the local wizards, and worms her way into the hearts of young girls everywhere.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fairy tale
This is the first novel in a juvenile fantasy featuring Cimorene, an extremely bored princess.Cimorene is the 7th daughter of the king of Linderwall, and she does not want to be like her sisters. But every time she tries to do something different, her efforts are thwarted. To avoid meeting another prospective husband, Cimorene runs away from home and finds herself the princess of a dragon.Unlike the other princess' within the dragons' community, Cimorene willingly works for Kazul and assists her with her magic, housekeeping, cooking, and other most un-princess-like jobs.Following Cimorene's tale was humorous and fantastic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and lively story, but I don't really care about buying the sequels
Dealing with Dragons is a fun, funny, and entertaining story.I enjoyed it very much, and thought its take on so many established fairy tale conventions as intelligent and creative. This book is worth reading if you're looking for something light and fun with some strong, comical characters.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dragonwings
Moonshadow starts out as a shy little boy who lives in China who was curious about The Land of the Golden Mountain (America). Men from China would go to America in search for a better life. This is what Moonshadow's father did. One day Moonshadow was told that he had to choose between either staying in China and never knowing his father or being taken to his father in The Land of the Golden Mountain, he chose to leave. On the boat he was very frightened because he heard the older men telling stories of how they were almost tortured in America which did not make it any easier for Moonshadow to leave China. When he arrives he encounters a couple of "scary" things before they get to where he will be staying. Everyone with the last name of Lee works in a Laundry Shop, which is owned by Uncle Bright Star and White Deer. Moonshadow is greeted with Demon (white people) clothing. He already doesn't like what he sees. Moon shadow faces many difficulties such as being mugged, robbed, being picked on and racism through out the whole story. Towards the end of the story Moonshadow's father Windrider discovers that he wants to peruse his dream and he will need Moonshadow's help to achieve that dream. When he tells everyone that he will be moving out they are hurt and angry. They live by a white demoness and her niece, Miss. Whitlaw and Robin. While they are living there Windrider works as a handy man for Mr. Alger. Everything is perfect until the Earthquake comes. Miss. Whitlaw and Robin, Moonshadow and Windrider have to separate. It is up to Moonshadow to take over there new house because father is working on his dream but, will he finish in time and will it work? You find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most wonderful book I've ever read
I highly recommend this book to anyone...adult or child. I thought this book was a touching story of family and hopes and dreams. I, too, thought it was boring at the beggining, but I got more into it at about chapter 2. I hope more people read this book. Laurence Yep has written a very good book. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars ZZZ,oh, what are we talking about?
Dragonwings is an okay, so-so story about a boy (Moonshadow) and his dad (windrider) who want to build the newfangled invention an aeroplane. The story is confusing, and when they don't understand an english word, it's spelled out in a way where you have to pronounce it to find out what it means. Moonshadow is an innagrant from China and faces problems dealing with his race. It's the book I had to read for my social studies homework and I say, "Get it from the library," ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting look into Martin's past and a wonderful read that takes a look at big issues. Highly recommended
The sixth Redwall novel, Martin the Warrior is the story of young Martin's imprisonment by, escape from, and war against the Badrang the Tyrant, ruler of Marshank. Martin is a young mouse, the son of Luke the Warrior. He is captured and enslaved by Badrang, and one night, after violent insurrection, tied up to suffer through a raging storm. It is then he meets Rose, a maiden mouse from the peaceful sanctuary of Noonvale whose brother Brome has also been captured by Badrang. Martin, Rose, and Brome arrange from an escape from Marshank, promising the other slaves that they will one day come back to free them all and to destroy Badrang and his fortress forever. With the help of a roving band of circus performers and a mass of willful slaves, and across a journey through the coastal lands, Brome and Martin each struggle to stay alive, build an army, and return to destroy Badrang. This is a throughly enjoyable installment of the Redwall series, Martin the Warrior provides anxiously-awaited background to Martin's character as he discovers and refines his fighting spirit, experiences peace in Noonvale, and forms a deep friendship with Rose. The book is exciting, the characters (particularly those of Martin, the warrior Felldoh, and the peaceful Brome) are realistic and inspiring, and the book tackles some of the ethical and personal problems of war and the warrior's life that the other Redwall books overlook. It is a great read, a logical lead up to later Redwall books and to the building of Redwall itself, and one of the better books in this series.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best one!
I love the Redwall books because the charictors are great and there is a ton of action. This one is the best book because of how much is happening. Friends turn to enemys and enemys turn to friends. This book is also a tear jerker because if all the deaths but I love it anyway! ... Read more

Donald Zinkoff is one of the greatest kids you could ever hope to meet.He laughs easily, he likes people, he loves school, he tries to rescue lostgirls in blizzards, he talks to old ladies. The only problem is, he's a loser.Until fourth grade, Zinkoff's uncontrollable giggling in class, sloppyhandwriting, horrible flute playing, bad grades, clumsiness, and ineptitude atsports go largely unnoticed. When he blows a race for his team, however, histransition to loserdom is complete: "[Loser] is the word. It is Zinkoff's newname. It is not in the roll book." Fortunately, he doesn't really notice. 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books i've ever read!!
In this book there is a boy named Donald Zinkoff. He has just now started the first grade. He is not fitting in very well he does everything that he is told to do by the teacher and he is always getting picked on and teased so school was not his favorite part of the day. He has a big problem where he has no friends and is not fitting in he is being made fun of and teased very much. I think that his book is a good book and i recomend that you should read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loser
The title of my book is Loser by Jerry Spinelli. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. The theme is to not bully. This book addresses bullying in a new way for me. I have always known that bullying someone can really hurt their self esteem, but Zinkoff was unaware of his treatment. Sometimes Zinkoff knew that other kids thought he was weird but it didn't ruin his life. He is more interested in the Nine Hundred Block of Willow. This street is where he met Claudia, a little girl who wears a leash. This street is also where the waiting Man lives. He sits and just waits for his brother to come back from the war that was 35 years ago. Jerry Spinelli has also written the book Stargirl in addition to Loser. These books are similar. Both main characters are the outcasts. Zinkoff is the main character of Loser. He has a sister named Polly. His best friend in 2nd grade was Andrew. Then, when Andrew moved, Zinkoff asked Hector to be his new best friend. They were only friends for a little bit. Hector just never answered the phone when Zinkoff called and never wanted to play. Their relationship was over pretty fast. Hobin was also a character in this book. He told Zinkoff he wasn't good at anything and this was the 1st time everyone, including Zinkoff, realized that he was a loser. The main conflict in the story was that Zinkoff needed to be accepted, not for himself or his self esteem, but to prove to others that he is just the same as they are. Zinkoff is naturally bad at everything. He never wins anything. He had only ever received one A in his life, and when he did all his classmates called him "Z man" the whole day. He then realized that they were blowing it way out of proportion and mocking him. His team also lost on field day because Zinkoff was the last person to finish the race in the relay and came in last. All these little things Zinkoff did made the conflict so much worse. The climax is when Zinkoff goes to middle school and isn't just a loser He is a nobody. No one even thought he was worth making fun of any more. I can't tell you the rest, but I can say it's worth reading to the end. I completely recommend this book. It gave me a better understanding of the best and right way to handle bullies. I give it 4 out of 5 stars!

Editorial Review

Nathaniel is a boy magician-in-training, sold to the government by his birth parents at the age of five and sent to live as an apprentice to a master. Powerful magicians rule Britain, and its empire, and Nathaniel is told his is the "ultimate sacrifice" for a "noble destiny." If leaving his parents and erasing his past life isn't tough enough, Nathaniel's master, Arthur Underwood, is a cold, condescending, and cruel middle-ranking magician in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The boy's only saving grace is the master's wife, Martha Underwood, who shows him genuine affection that he rewards with fierce devotion. Nathaniel gets along tolerably well over the years in the Underwood household until the summer before his eleventh birthday. Everything changes when he is publicly humiliated by the ruthless magician Simon Lovelace and betrayed by his cowardly master who does not defend him.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love Bartimaeus!
Stop your browsing and buy this book. Jonathon Stroud gives the world of fantasy his own unique twist. In his world magicians cast spells to do various ne'er do well deeds, but the spells don't magically go out to do their business. No, the magicians must work through a second party namely an imp or a djinni or an afrit or some other creatively named creature. The creature does the biding of the magician. The creature also has a mind and a will of its own. So part of the fun of this book is the tug of war between the magicians and the creatures. The spotlight magician in this book is a young boy named Nathaniel. He summons a creature named Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus is a wise-cracking, sarcastic, drippingly funny sideman who is the energy in this book. So stop browsing and buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Original Idea
I really enjoyed reading this book, and the following books in the series. Very original, I especially enjoyed the continuous shifting point of view between Bartimaeus (Jini) and Nathaniel (magician in training). The book is fast paced with plenty of action and sly humor. ... Good read.
5-0 out of 5 stars TANTALIZINGTALE
A DARKLY TANTALIZINGTALE THAT IN MY OPINION IS ONE OF THE BEST OF RECENT YEARS . IT IS A LIVELY STORY AND IS MOST INVENTIVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have a copy of this book!
My mother bought a copy of this title for me to give to her future grandchild. I was so inspired by it, that I want to give it to all of my friends now. This book has delightful drawings and a wonderful message. This book is fun to read as an adult and a child. It is so important that children and adults are surrounded by positive messages like the one this book has to offer. I recommend it for everyone!
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific and fun book for young ones!
The positive messages of this book are complemented by the terrific illustrations.A very simple yet important text as it teaches little ones to like themselves. The main character is one very upbeat pig.My son enjoys and laughs at the illustrations. The text provides fodder for conversation. Not too heavy in a figurative or literal way, this book is small enough to warrant a place on every small child's bookshelf. You may also want to check out Ms. Carlson's other books as they are all terrific.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for a preschooler's sad moments
A great way for preschoolers to repair their fragile sense of self and self-respect.Any child should be able to absorb these positive message to repeat to themselves when they feel down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 1-day read!
I was at my usual trip to the library, shuffling through the books, and this book caught my eye. I picked it up, and read the inside, which honestly, I think was lamely put. Well, I took the book home and started to read it. By the third chapter, I was hooked. It was interesting, and what really was neat to me, was how it sounded like an actual 13 year old was telling the story!
1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time
I read this book for school a while ago, and from the moment I started I knew that it was going to be a long, long, long read. The characters in the book were a bunch of annoying brats that seemed far too full of themselves to actually exist. The plot was also terriable for the fact that it was almost as if there wasn't one. A girl goes looking for her mother (which the outcome is clearly easy to spot since the book puts too much of it's time on the buildup of"Whats going to happen?")
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply put: Beautiful.
This book is truly one the best that I have ever had the privilege to read. It flows from one chapter tot he next, never skipping a beat, with vibrant characters that I can certainly identify with: the irritating friend, the homey grandparents, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusion
I never quite understood why everyone seemed to love this book so much. I read it, along with my entire grade, in seventh grade, and found the book to be annoying. I was especially annoyed by flawed characters, and a not very impressive writing style.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed...
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor was a very disappointing book. There is no particular story; the book starts rising action here and there and down again here and there. There is no specific climax. Basically, it's like there's no story. What I also hated about this book was the ending and the fact that there was no moral in the story. The book was full of cliches from every chaper by chaper. Each chapter was too long( this is not a dumb complaint). Instead of just starting a new chapter, Taylor just skips a line to basically start a new chapter. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense to you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Twisting book that can probbably hurt the mind
This book was very interesting, however it had too many things going on at once. It was hard for me to follow. It had a lot of action, but it was confusing and hard to follow. I like the red king series, but this was the worst of the five. Plus, it was a total Harry Potter wannabe. If you liked this book, the GREAT! Go pick up a harry potter book instead. You'll like it 10x as much. Trust me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Through The Years
