One of the reviewers wondered why the text was changed at the end of Chapter 12, The Dark Island.I just reviewed both my editions, and they both match the text on the CD.One edition is a Puffin Book, published by Penguin Books (1977) and the other is the First Harper Trophy edition (2000).I wonder why YOUR edition is different?

5-0 out of 5 stars Growing up on Fried worms
Of all the books I have read in school (required and for pleasure) the one book that I remember reading and consider to be trademark of my youth was How to Eat Fried Worms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Haha, I remember this.
When I was in elementary school, I remember reading this book. It's stomach-turning but it definitely appealed to me when I was younger. I highly reccomend it for kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars DANiELLE'S REViEW
How To Eat Fried Worms?! Ewww!! Doesn't that sound disgusting! This was a great book that was very interseting and humorous. This book is about a boy who is dared to eat worms for a certain amount of money. Some of his friends who dared him to eat the worms took him to a carnival and tried to brain-wash him. If they got him to forget about the worms before 12'o clockhe would have to pay his friends money for not doing it. the boy comes home and his mom wakes him up and says ''Dont you have to eat two worms?'' The boy autimatIcally ran down into the back yard and ate two worms before 12'o clock. So the story goes on very adventureous. I reccomend this book because it is fun, exciting, mysterious, and awesome! That is why you should read this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Wide Window
In the Series of Unfortunate Events isn't ahappily ever after kind of story. There are three regular children:
4-0 out of 5 stars The Wide Window--by Sophie Kendrick
Although I am sometimes annoyed by Lemony Snicket's style of beating around the bush before he gets to the story, I enjoyed the third book in the series as much as I did the other two. I like the adventure, mystery, and sometimes down-right scariness of the book and I love all of the characters, especially Sunny. I think she has such a funny personality. Even though the whole book is just one bad thing after another happening to the poor children, I am still excited to read the next book. I hope this series never ends until something good finally happens to the Baudelaire orphans!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most terrible story I've ever read--five stars,
This is an aweful story--you should read it, absolutely.

Editorial Review

"If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun,it will turn him into a good boy." Such is the reigning philosophy at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility where there is no lake, and there are no happy campers. In place of what used to be "the largest lake in Texas" is now a dry, flat, sunburned wasteland, pocked with countless identical holes dug by boys improving their character. Stanley Yelnats, of palindromic name and ill-fated pedigree, has landed at Camp Green Lake because it seemed a better option than jail. No matter that his conviction was all a case of mistaken identity, the Yelnats family has become accustomed to a long history of bad luck, thanks to their "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!" Despite his innocence, Stanley is quickly enmeshed in the Camp Green Lake routine: rising before dawn to dig a hole five feet deep and five feet in diameter; learning how to get along with the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Holes
This book is one of those books, that when you start reading it you don't want to put it down. First things first, the title of the book is Holes and the author just happens to be Louis Sachar. He is an amazing author. He has another book that is new, that also goes to the book Holes. It is called Small Steps. Let me tell you something, there are a lot of characters. We have Stanley Yelnats and he is the main character. He is walking home from school and gets hit in the head by these shoes and the cops come. He ends up going to Camp Green Lake to dig holes for his punishment. When he gets there he meets a whole bunch of people. The people he meets are Zero, Armpit, X-Ray, and Zig Zag. One person he does not like is Mr. Sir. That is how it all got started for Stanley. I really like this book, it is a terrific story. My favorite part is when Stanley steals the water truck and crashes into a hole. It is a wonderful book so I think it is appropriate for any age to read this book. This book is fiction but it could be nonfiction. Compared to other books this one is one of my favorites. It also has a lot of rewards such as the Newbery Award, the Rebecca Caudill Award, and last but not least the National Book Award. On a scale from one to ten I definitely rate this a ten.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT just for kids!
When my daughter's 5th grade teacher sent her home with this book, I picked it up FOR A SECONDto be sure it was "appropriate." The next thing I knew, it was 2 a.m., and I was entranced. This is a fantastic, many-layered book that will enthrall anyone who loves a good story, great writing, and magical story telling. Much better than the (really good) movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Owns a piece of my soul
I read the book for the first time when I was 9 years old. I dig it out every few years and re read it. To this day it still has the power to reduce me to tears.
4-0 out of 5 stars A portrait of friendship
Published in the 70's, this book was an instant children's classic in American literature. This book deals with the friendship of a boy, Jesse, and a girl, Leslie, both of whom are social outcasts.Coming from different families and upbringings, they form a friendship that bears the strain of tragedy. This reviewer read this book while in elementary school; but revisited it once I heard that a movie was being made about it.The book is very good, and is great for children to read in today's culture where intergender relationships are often characterized in terms of sex.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad, yet beautiful
One of my favorite parts of parenting is rediscovering wonderful children's literature with my daughters. I had heard of this book but never read it, so when my daughter chose it for a book report I seized the opportunity to read an award-winning book that I had neglected.

Editorial Review

Since the beginning of the school year, high school freshman Melinda has found that it's been getting harder and harder for her to speak out loud: "My throat is always sore, my lips raw.... Every time I try to talk to my parents or a teacher, I sputter or freeze.... It's like I have some kind of spastic laryngitis." What could have caused Melinda to suddenly fall mute? Could it be due to the fact that no one at school is speaking to her because she called the cops and got everyone busted at the seniors' big end-of-summer party? Or maybe it's because her parents' only form of communication is Post-It notes written on their way out the door to their nine-to-whenever jobs. While Melinda is bothered by these things, deep down she knows the real reason why she's been struck mute...Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars review for speak
Anderson has a very interesting writing style in Speak. She sets her book up to be like a report card, each section signified by the marking periods of a school year--starting with first marking period to forth marking period. Each of the four sections is a chronological explanation for why Melinda is the way she is. Within the "marking periods" the sections are indicated with a title telling the reader what she will be talking about. The passages are written much like a play format. Anderson is very descriptive in her text. With each dialog is a bracket explaining what the person talking is doing, wearing, or gesturing, much like she is directing a play and the actors need to know how to stand or move. Her language is sophisticated yet simple. She writes to an older audience. She uses pronouns like "IT," talking about Andy and "Them," to address her parents. Her usage of the pronouns allows the reader to feel the separation from the characters. By calling Andy "IT," she is letting the reader know that he is a character she would like to forget and could care less about. Calling her parents Them, excludes her from feeling like she is a part of them. Anderson spells words wrong so it seems as if it could be a diary and the narrator, Melinda, is reflecting upon what happened but cannot spell. It allows the reader to connect to Melinda better.

5-0 out of 5 stars a haunting, painful read
This book is painful, but then again, so is teenage life for many young people. Those who have felt alone, scared, confused and without a voice will not only feel Melinda's pain, but her triumph as she finally finds her voice. However, it is the people who never felt like her at all who need to read this book most of all.Maybe it will help them understand the trials that many of our young ones are going through so that we can find ways to show them that they are not alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars It'll Shake You Up and Set You Down Again
When I began this book, I didn't like it.It was so negative, and absolutely depressing. There's a reason for that. It's about a girl who is suffering through depression over something that happened. It's written in first person, so you feel everything she feels. Her depression really gets into your head. You go through everything--from the depression to the recovery--yourself.At the end, things start getting lighter, freer, and after the rest of the book, it's such a release.I do recommend this book, for people who are going through depression themselves. It has mature content--probably not suited for the average 12- or 13-year-old--but I recommend it to people--even young people--who have gone through or are going through the same things. The ending makes up for all the negativity throughout the book. ... Editorial Review

The evacuation of Jews from Nazi-held Denmark is one of the great untold stories of World War II. On September 29, 1943, word got out in Denmark that Jews were to be detained and then sent to the death camps. Within hours the Danish resistance, population and police arranged a small flotilla to herd 7,000 Jews to Sweden. Lois Lowry fictionalizes a true-story account to bring this courageous tale to life. She brings the experience to life through the eyes of 10-year-old Annemarie Johannesen, whose family harbors her best friend, Ellen Rosen, on the eve of the round-up and helps smuggles Ellen's family out of the country. 5-0 out of 5 stars Number the Stars
Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry is an incredible book. It's 1943 and World War 2 is taking place. Annemarie Johansen, a ten year old girl, and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of the happier times before war. But they can't do anything to stop it. There are German nazis across every street and they are taking the Jewish people to concentration Camps. Ellen is Jewish so Annemarie Johansen and her family just need to find a way how to help out. They pretend Ellen is Annemarie's sister and they also go the next day to where Annemarie's uncle lived, near the sea. One way or another they find a way how to escape from the soldiers and Annemarie's uncle took them to Sweeden, towards freedom, of course, until the war ended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Story of Courage
I came across Numbering the Stars while clearing out a storeroom at the school where I teach.Since I had already read and reviewed The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger by Lois Lowry, I took the book home and read it over the weekend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lana Quintel's voice is perfect for Junie!
My daughter absolutley loves Junie B. Jones, so I thought these cassettes would be great for long car rides. The first thing that I got a kick out of is Lana Quintel's voice--she is just perfect as Junie. She's got a little-girlish, slightly nervous tone, which really fits. Some audio stories can really bore you to tears, which is bad for the adult driving the car, but these keep you listening and aware.5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones First Grader at Last
I have been reading the Junie B. Jones collection to my kindergarten class from the beginning of the school year. They absolutely love the collection. At times I have found the language inappropriate for kindergarten.I have chosen to change some of the words as I read. The children do not realize and the books still remain enjoyable and fun.Barbara Park is a great author and has truley captured the uniqueness of a child's kindergarten career. All books are HIghly remcommended.I tried to keep this book until the last day of school when my students would have officially been first graders. They wouldn't let me.One of my students brought the book from home and we finished it in two sittings.Junie B. For the first time in a decade, Willy Wonka, the reclusive and eccentric chocolate maker, is opening his doors to the public--well, five members of the public to be exact. The lucky five who find a Golden Ticket in their Wonka chocolate bars will receive a private tour of the factory, given by Mr. Wonka himself. For young Charlie Bucket, this a dream come true. And, when he finds a dollar bill in the street, he can't help but buy two Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delights--even though his impoverished family could certainly use the extra dollar for food. But as Charlie unwraps the second chocolate bar, he sees the glimmer of gold just under the wrapper! The very next day, Charlie, along with his unworthy fellow winners Mike Teavee, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, and Augustus Gloop, steps through the factory gates to discover whether or not the rumors surrounding the Chocolate Factory and its mysterious owner are true. What they find is that the gossip can't compare to the extraordinary truth, and for Charlie, life will never be the same again. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SCRUMDIDLEUMPTIOUS!
The mysterious candy maker ''Willy Wonka'' is hiding five golden tickets in his famous ''Wonka Bars''. The children lucky enough to findthese tickets will be taken on a tour (hosted by Mr. Wonka himself) of the enormous Wonka factory. The world is searching frantically for the tickets, and the first person to find one is ''Augustus Gloop'' a greedy German boy is addicted to chocolate. The second ticket finder is ''Veruca Salt'' a spoiled little girl who quite literally gets everything she asks for, no matter how absurd her request is. The person who discovers the third ticket is ''Mike Teave'' an irritable boy addicted to TV. ''Be quiet'' he tells whoever is foolish enough to ask him a question while his show is on ''THIS is the life''. ''Violet Beauragrde'', a dimwitted gum chewing girl finds the fourth ticket, (she had to give up gum-chewing for a while so she could switch to chocolate. And the title character ''Charlie Bucket'' finds the fifth and final golden ticket which was quite a miracle, considering how poor his family was and how little money they had to spend on luxuries such as candy. This motely crew of children are allowed to discover the wonders of Mr. Wonka's factory.

Reading a novel after having seen a cinematic adaptation is always a challenge. One of the deepest joys of reading---relying on one's imagination to create the characters, their voices, the locales, etc.---is preempted and nullified by the choices made by directors, producers, casting agents, and set designers. Thankfully, the best books which have been adapted for the screen are complex and spacious enough that they allow some free play in spite of this imaginative preemption, and such is the case with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE CHOCOLATEY BOOK EVER!!!

Editorial Review

Fans of Lemony Snicket's wonderful Series of Unfortunate Events won't besurprised to find that in the sixth installment the three Baudelaire orphans'new home proves to be something of a mixed bag. As our ever sad but helpfulnarrator states, "Although 'a mixed bag' sometimes refers to a plastic bag thathas been stirred in a bowl, more often it is used to describe a situation thathas both good parts and bad parts. An afternoon at the movie theater, forinstance, would be a mixed bag if your favorite movie were showing, but if youhad to eat gravel instead of popcorn. A trip to the zoo would be a very mixedbag if the weather were beautiful, but all of the man-and woman-eating lionswere running around loose." And so it is for the bad-luck Baudelaires. Theirfancy new 71-bedroom home on 667 Dark Avenue is inhabited by Esmé GigiGeniveve Squalor (the city's sixth most important financial advisor), and herkindly husband, Jerome, who doesn't like to argue. Esmé is obsessed bythe trends du jour (orphans are "in"), and because elevators are "out," Sunny,Violet, and Klaus have to trudge up 66 flights of stairs to reach the Squalors'penthouse apartment. (Other unfortunate trends include pinstripe suits, aqueousmartinis--water with a faint olive-y taste--parsley soda, and oceandecorations.) Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Running Around in Circles
I remember reading this book in grade school and loving it.I decided to revisit the book as an adult and I could not believe this was the same book that I loved.I could not wait for the book to end.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Adventures
This book is about two dogs and one cat traveling through the Canadian wilderness, and their adventures trying to survive and make it back to their family. This book was an exciting book with lots of adventure. I would recommend this book to my friends. The book is easy to understand and fun to read. My likes and dislikes are that I liked the adventure in it, and my dislikes are well, I didn't have any dislikes really; it was a pretty good book.If I were to rank this book one through ten, I would give it a nine. This book will put you on the edge of your seat, and you will never want to put the book down again; you want to keep reading it. The main plot of the book is that the pets decide they want to see their real family. Because their owner right now is not there original owner. So Sassy the cat, Chance the English Bull dog, and Shadow the Golden Retriever set out on adventure to find their family. On their adventure they work together to make their way back home and use teamwork to survive. The question is do they make it back home? Do they survive the Canadian wilderness? Do they finally get back to their family? Read the book and find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly an incredible journey!(...)

5-0 out of 5 stars AND THERE WAS NOTHING!!! But ham....
Now see my chillins, many people often wonder long and hard, into the depths of the great Night, which, above everytihng else, MUST NOT be insulted. If you insult the Night, pigs will come and eat your cheese, and all heck will break lose, AND THEY'LL STEAL ALL YOUR WIMMINS!! THough of course, that wouldnt be a problem to some...For you see, right now I am lissinin' to the Nightmare Before Christmas CD, and it speaks to me...it says at the end of it that Sally and Jack have chillins. BUT! This arouses some questions as one intelligent individual says,
5-0 out of 5 stars Really Great Book
Lirael was a wonderful book, I couldn't put it down and i read it twice.Lirael is about a teen who isnt gifted with the ability to see into the future like the rest of the daughters of the Clayr. She wants to commit suicide, but then is given another chance to be a librairian. There she finds many thing sabout herself and discovers some magical objects that help her in a journey. She is called by the Clayr and is told that they Saw she would be somewhere, but it was far away, so she begins a journey to get to that place, and an this lon gjourney she meets some very important friends, and learns more about herself than ever seemedpossible. It has awesome action and suspense, great twists, the characters are awesome, and I could go on and on about how wonderful it was. I Couldn't wait to read the sequel, which I did and it was great too.And I read the one before it, Sabriel. Garth Nix is a great author, I became a fan of his when a friend of mine recomended the Seventh Tower series. I recomend Lirael to any fantasy lover, or any book lover for that matter. Definitely a rewarding read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr
Lirael is a girl who lives in the Clayr's glacier. Almost all the Clayr get the Sight, the ability to see the future, by the time they reach their 14th birthday. The story starts on Lirael's 14th birthday. She still does not have the Sight, so she decides to commit suicide, but ends up hearing an important conversation. The Great Clayr see her, and erase her memory, and ask if there is anything she would like to do. She decides to become a Librarian. She finds a cool dog statuette, and then decides to make a sending (a being made of magic who cannot leave the boundaries in which it was made) that looks just like it. When she does, she accidentally transforms the dog statuette into a real dog. Her name is the Disreputable dog. Lirael finds a secret room, and I won't reveal what happens because it's really cool, but she finds a book, some panpipes, and a dark mirror. Lirael has never been Seen by the other Clayr before, but on the day she finds these things they see her at a place called Red Lake. They send her on a mission to stop a terrible thing from happening there. Something is being dug up. She gets a boat, and starts traveling down the river Ratterlin. At the same time this goes on, Sameth, the son of Sabriel and Touchstone, and the Abbhorsen-in-waiting, runs away. He runs into a forest, and plans to travel to see his friend Nicholas. He had been burnt on his wrists by an evil Free Magic sorcerer and necromancer, Hedge when he was coming home from a cricket game. A necromancer is a person who bring dead spirits back from dead, and binds them to do whatever the necormancer wants them to do in Life. Sameth is afraid of the Book of the Dead, and the bells of the Abbhorsen which his mother have to him. He calls himself Sam the traveler. Mogget, a free magic being, bound and enslaved to the Abbhorsen's will, finds him, and they start traveling to find his friend, and rescue him from whatever dangers are sure to befall him in the Old Kingdom. Eventually they are chased by Shadow Hands (fresh, rotting corpses, that are inhabited by dead spirits). They come to the river Ratterlin, and jump into a metal washing tub that sails them down the river, safe from anything dead, for dead cannot cross running water. Of course Lirael and Sam are destined to meet, but how will they save the Old Kingdom from Hedge and his army of thousands of dead, who are even more powerful than the Shadow Hands?Read more

Editorial Review

"It's funny how ideas are, in a lot of ways they're just like seeds. Both of them start real, real small and then... woop, zoop, sloop... before you can say Jack Robinson, they've gone and grown a lot bigger than you ever thought they could." So figures scrappy 10-year-old philosopher Bud--"not Buddy"--Caldwell, an orphan on the run from abusive foster homes and Hoovervilles in 1930s Michigan. And the idea that's planted itself in his head is that Herman E. Calloway, standup-bass player for the Dusky Devastators of the Depression, is his father.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by Chris L. of "Bud, Not Buddy"
Hi!I just finished reading BUD, NOT BUDDY by Christopher Paul Curtis. It's a very good book I must say and this is why I give it a 5 star rating.
4-0 out of 5 stars Siji John's"Bud, Not Buddy" book review
"Bud, Not Buddy" was a heart-felt book. Ten-year-old Bud Caldwell was the main character of this book. His mother had died when he was six years old. He had a suitcase with his personal things in there. Nobody was allowed to look in there without his permission. He also wrote a book for himself. It was called,"Bud Caldwell's Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making A Better Liar Out Of Yourself." Bud's mom never mentioned anything about his father. He had a flyer in his suitcase that had a picture of a band on it. He was pretty sure that the person who played the bass was his father. Herman E. Calloway was the guy's name. Since he had nowhere to live, he went in search for Mr. Calloway. Bud's destination was Grand Rapids. In order to get to grand Rapids, he had to get to Hooverville, Flint. He was already living in Flint. He just had to find Hooverville. Hooverville was a place for people without money. When he got to Hooverville, Bud made a new friend named Deza Malone. She later became his girlfriend. She gave him tips for living life without money. Bud's ticket to Grand Rapids was just a train ride away. Unfortunatly, Bud missed the train. He had to walk from there. He was stopped by a man named Lefty Lewis. He offered Bud a ride to his home. Since Bud didn't have a home, he had to use his book to get him out of this mess. Bud told him that he lived in Grand Rapids and that Herman E. Calloway. was his father. Lefty Lewis fell for it and took Bud to Grand Rapids. Bud was finally at his destination. He went inside the building where the band practiced. He confronted Mr. Calloway and told him that he was his Bud's father. Mr. Calloway was mad at this and replied with a no. Bud didn't believe him. At the end of the story, Bud finds out that Herman E. Callowaywas actually his grandfather. I would have never guessed this ending until I read the entire book. It was very surprising. Bud Caldwell came looking for a home and ended up being with his long-lost grandfather. He struggled through some difficult times but he succeeded in the end. ... Read more
