5-0 out of 5 stars The River
"He saw the blueness, almost a ball of energy, the crack-flash of color that came from inside his mind, inside his life, and then he was back and down and saw nothing more." You may never know when there will be a day where your stranded on an Island with know where out, you have yourself and Mother Nature with you, that's it. The River is a book that has to do with survival; Brian Robeson was alone with Mother Nature itself for fifty-four days with a small hatchet from his mother. Luckily Brian overcame the wilderness and survived. The U.S Government has contacted Brian to help teach the military and astronauts to survive the way he did. The only problem is he has to go back and face the wilderness again like he did once before. Derek Holtzer a government psychologist will join Derek and take notes for survival skills during the trip.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Ruby In The Smoke
The Ruby In the Smoke is a good mystery, and exactly what I would expect from Pullman. The characters are intriguing, and the sudden deaths make it very suspenseful. I felt very connected with Jim and Adelaide, as they showed quite a bit of personality. A good book is one in that you can't tell whether or not a person is actually good or will betray sometime.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Ruby in the Smoke, July 14, 2006
Philip Pullman has created a new character that readers can empathize with and root for during this suspenseful mystery.Sally Lockhart is a sixteen year old orphan girl that receives a strange note about the death of her father. As soon as she begins her investigation, more deaths occur.Sally becomes entangled in a web of mystery involving murder, illegal opium trading, and a stolen ruby.Sally has many nightmares, which she is unable to understand until she uncovers more pieces of the puzzle. The suspense builds as new characters are continually brought into the mystery, making it difficult to know who can be trusted.

I shall admit that upon reading some of these reviews I felt my heart sink, for I believed this book better then those of His Dark Materials - if that is even possible.

Editorial Review

"Pb-pb-b-b-b. Pb-pb-b-b-b." With these magic vocables, Ralph the mouserevs up a dream come true--his very own motorcycle. Living in a knothole in a hotel room, young Ralph has seen plenty of families come and go, some more generous with their crumbs than others. But when young Keith and his parents check in to the hotel, Ralph gets his first chance to check out. He has always fantasized about venturing beyond the second floor, maybe even outside. Curiosity overcomes caution, and Ralph must have a go at Keith's toy motorcycle. Soon, the headstrong mouse finds himself in a pickle, when all he wanted was to ride a motorcycle. Lucky for him, the boy understands how it is. When he discovers Ralph in his thwarted attempt to abscond with the toy bike, Keith generously encourages the rodent to ride. He even teaches him the simple trick of starting the motorcycle: "You have to make a noise... pb-pb-b-b-b." The subsequent situations Ralph motors into require quick thinking and grownup-sized courage. The team of Beverly Cleary and Louis Darling has been a great favorite for decades, introducing young chapter readers to Ramona, Beezus, Henry, and of course Ralph the mouse. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Mouse and the Motorcycle
I read this book alot when I was younger, and now as a teenager I bought it and read it again just to pass the time. It was funny, smart, and Beverly Cleary makes it sound like mice and boys can talk to each other in real life and it's an everyday occurance. It is such a great book, if I can love it as much as a teenager as I did as a kid.

3-0 out of 5 stars Katherine's Review
This book is an OK book.I just did not find this book entertaining enough to keep my attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fearless Ralph
To a fearless little mouse named Ralph, pb-pb-b-b-b,pb-pb-b-b-b,was the sound he had been waiting to hear all his life. "The sound spoke of highways and speed, of distance and danger, and whiskers blown back by the wind." When Ralph spies Keith's toy motorcycle, his whiskers quiver with excitement. He ventures out of his mouse hole in the wall of his room, up the telephone cord to the bedside table and climbs aboard the toy motorcycle. Startled by the ringing of the telephone, Ralph and the motorcycle fall into the metal wastebasket. Keith not only rescues Ralph from the wastebasket but also teaches Ralph how to ride the motorcycle. His need for adventures soon begins when he tries to prove he is grown up and responsible.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Corner of the Universe
I was a bit worried when I first started reading this book because it didn't seem to have everything I like in it, but I really liked it once it got going. It was funny and sad and happy all along through and I just think it's a very interesting book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book that Influenced My Life
"A Corner of the Universe" is about a 21 year old young man named Adam Mercer who is mentally disabled in such a way that causes him to act as if he were a child. It is also about a 12 year old girl named Hattie Owen who gets to know her uncle, Adam, and his world. The story occurs during the summer of 1958 in a small town in Millerton. Hattie lives in a boarding house managed by her parents. Adam and Hattie enjoy going to Fred Carmel's Funtime Carnival together. The plot of this story is having Adam come back to live with his parents, after all these years of never mentioning him. Hattie is curious about her uncle and decides to meet him, and from there after Hattie begins to grow closer to her uncle. This book is influential because it causes you to think about how precious life really is, and about the obstacles the mentally disabled face, and to make you understand and realize that despite their differences, they are just like us. When I first began reading this book, I wanted to know more about Adam. After reading the book, I thought about people who are like Adam, and what it would be like if I were in his shoes; How would others treat me? Honestly, I also felt the need to visit the nearest carnival. This book tells me that the mentally disabled should be treated the way you would treat those you care about. From reading "A Corner of the Universe", I have learned how to cope with loss, and the true value of a life. Ann M. Martin uses figures of speech in her style of writing, including similes. For example, "I noticed that we settle down gingerly, as if something might break." I recommend this book to anyone who would take their time to read it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Long Way From Chicago By Richard Peck
Time comes when Joey and Mary Alice must visit their Grandma Dowdel in Illinois. Each year they visit, Grandma Dowdel may be getting older , but is actually growing younger inside. Richard Peck captures special moments of every trip in each chapter. The most memorable chapter for me is called, " The Day ofJudgment".I enjoyed reading this chapter the most, because I think this chapterportrays Grandma Dowdel the best. This book was influential for me, because it had an important moral in it. Peck wanted us to find the true meaningof the book, which is that you're never to old tobe a kid. Richard Peck used the moral of the storyto create one of his important characters-Grandma Dowdel. In the beginning, I thought the Dowdels would be in for the longestmonotonoustrip of their lives. But now I realized I was completely wrong . Every yearturned out better than the previous year. This also tells me that you can never tell a persons heart from the outside. I also learned that I should show more respect to the elderly, because theyhave been throughnumerous experiences. The characters in this book have accents which verifies that it takes place in the past.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not all true
This book, as stated by a previous reviewer, is not really for younger children.Even worse, it presents rumors as fact .Warren Harding was rumored to have joined the KKK, even thoughmost of the evidence comes from Klan members themselves. Many historians doubt this happened and have sited far more reliable sources. One of my students, for example, takes this book at face value. It proved a positive learning experience about taking this stuff as is in the book, however, I wish I had not had to do that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lives of the Presidents
In Lives of the Presidents:Fame, Shame (and What the Neighbors Thought), the author writes brief biographical sketches about each of the presidents from George Washington to William Clinton.Included in the sketches are both historical and anecdotal information about the leaders of our nation. Also included are caricature illustrations of each president.

Editorial Review

Nine-year-old Tiffany Aching needs magic--fast! Her sticky little brother Wentworth has been spirited away by the evil Queen of faerie, and it’s up to her to get him back safely. Having already decided to grow up to be a witch, now all Tiffany has to do is find her power. But she quickly learns that it’s not all black cats and broomsticks. According to her witchy mentor Miss Tick, "Witches don’t use magic unless they really have to...We do other things. A witch pays attention to everything that’s going on...A witch uses her head...A witch always has a piece of string!" Luckily, besides her trusty string, Tiffany’s also got the Nac Mac Feegles, or the Wee Free Men on her side. Small, blue, and heavily tattooed, the Feegles love nothing more than a good fight except maybe a drop of strong drink! Tiffany, heavily armed with an iron skillet, the feisty Feegles, and a talking toad on loan from Miss Tick, is a formidable adversary. But the Queen has a few tricks of her own, most of them deadly. Tiffany and the Feegles might get more than they bargained for on the flip side of Faerie!Prolific fantasy author Terry Pratchett has served up another delicious helping of his famed Discworld fare. The not-quite-teen set will delight in the Feegles’ spicy, irreverent dialogue and Tiffany’s salty determination. Novices to Pratchett’s prose will find much to like here, and quickly go back to devour the rest of his Discworld offerings. Scrumptiously recommended. (Ages 10 to 14) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Discworld
I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the hype...
This was certainly no Harry Potter. It was a cute little story, mind you, but I don't think it was as fabulous as the reviews lead you to believe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, well exceeded my expectations
While the story starts out rather conventionally, the wee free men are a wonder, and the world you are drawn into is far more interesting, delightful and sophisticated than I expected.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dark is Rising
Like young Arthur of the thousand-year old legend of Camelot, our hero, Will Stanton, is surprised early in his adolescence to learn that in fact he is not a normal boy. He is someone for whom great things are destined, and who naturally feels totally unprepared for the daunting responsibilities thrust on him. It's a classic trope, one that has been used thousands of times, most familiarly for this generation in the Harry Potter series. Unlike J.K. Rowling however, Susan Cooper puts Will firmly in the middle of a loving family. Both parents are positive characters, and even his many siblings, with their teasing and pranks, ultimately support and care for each other. I recommend that parents read this book with their children, it won't bore them, and it has themes that can be discussed over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
I have read all of the books in this series and they were all amazing. This one was one that caught my attention more than the other ones just because all of the girls in the book are more independent and rebelious. It is a classic girly girl book that keeps you on your toes. I couldn't put it down! It took me only a day to read and it was killing me that I hadn't yet read the last book. I highly recomend it to anyone that likes love stories with a little twist! It tells the story of four girls Bridget, Carmen, Tibby, and Lena. They have been best friends for their whole life and have to again seperate for the summer. Each girl goes to their summer destinations. This can not tear them apart of course, they write to eachother and pass around a pair of pants. These aren't any ordinary pants though they are magical. They bring good luck to each girl and fits each of their very different shapes. A symbol of friendship and love that is with them, like a blanket. Put this on your top for "must read!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Girls in Pants Review
Girls in Pants is the sequel to the sisterhood books 1 & 2. This book is about 4 teenage girls who have magic pants that fits all of them and brings them good luck. The book tells you about thier lives the summer before they all go of to college.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Septembers are growing up...well, partly, anyway.
Tibby, Lena, Carmen and Bee are now 17 and have just graduated from high school. All are looking toward college in the fall. Not all of them eagerly, but at least with the knowledge that college will help each reach a desired goal. Tibby is planning to go to film school at NYU; Lena wants to go to art school in New Jersey; Carmen to Williams; and Bee, well Bee could go anywhere she wanted. Every school to which she applied accepted her. She chose Brown.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Completes
When I first reviewed The Giver years ago, I loved it.Until I got to the end.It felt woefully incomplete. It wasn't simply that the reader was required to imagine possibilities. It felt like the author hadn't finished showing us her theme. Now she has with this sequel, and I only wish I could go back to increase the stars on The Giver, for the sequel has pulled up that book as well.

Kira is a child that is left with no family. Her mother now gone and taken to the field, with nowhere to live and no one to take care of her. Many people wouldn't mind if Kira and her twisted leg were left in the field to die. People thought that she was no good and couldn't do anything for the community. One of the women of the community had taken her land and made it into a place for their small children. These same women didn't agree that Kira should stay; she had gone to the Council of Guardians with the situation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gathering Blue, the best of Lois Lowry
The book Gathering Blue is about a crippled girl named Kira. After her mother dies from sickness, Kira is left an orphan. Most of the town is more than happy to get ridof her, especially Vandara. 5-0 out of 5 stars Memories
I enjoyed the book The Giver By: Lois Lowry. The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a community that everything is the same. Jonas is selected to be the new reciever of memories, which is an extremely important job. The receiver of memories holds all of the memories of the past so the community doesn't have to bear them. As Jonas takes on these memories the excitement begins. I enjoyed the characters in the Giver because they were different and interesting. I loved the plot because it was exciting and suspenceful. The Giver is one of a triolgy of books. The second is called Gathering Blue and the last is The Messenger, they are all relitivily related.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Giver
Lois Lowry's eye opening novel, The Giver, really does make you think, ''Is the grass greener on the other side?''
5-0 out of 5 stars VHS Class Giver Review- Benton Wilson
The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is an excellent work of literature. It presents a stunning example of a futuristic, dystopian society where all facets of life are controlled by various rules and regulations in an easily readable format. Jonas, the novel's protagonist, is chosen by the council to become the successor to the Giver, a man whose job is to mentally store the collective memories of society. The book focuses on situations such as a society without individuality, the importance of choice, and how people react to finding out that the accepted truths of their world were at one point not the case. Ms. Lowry uses chilling imagery, such as the lack of color, the inability of most people to love, and the unemotional "release" of those who don't fit into the government's carefully laid out plans for a perfect society to establish a mood that, while somewhat bleak, is not entirely without hope. The story picks up as it progresses, shifting to a more tense, but still equally atmospheric, form. This tension is skillfully maintained until the story's conclusion. I would heartily recommend this story to all those who enjoy fictional works that focus on either individualism vs. society or potential visions of the future.

Editorial Review

Having suffered through a string of appalling foster homes (the spittingCranbepps; scary, toothless Mr. Dreep who locked them in his cellar; and themean Burgerton boys), 13-year-old orphan Dallas and his twin sister, Florida, have pretty much given up on ever finding a happy home. So when an eccentricolder couple enters their lives, providing such adventures as a riverexpedition, a treasure hunt (of sorts), and a whole lot of remarkable meals:"beat-the-blues broccoli," "anti-cranky crumpets," and "getting-used-to-kids- again stew," the twins take a while to warm up. Florida's language teems withoutrageous, telling negativity--everything is "putrid"--and even dreamy Dallasis inclined to bouts of doubt. But warm up they do, to the continual delight ofreaders of all ages.Read more

The book called Ruby Holler is a very good book, and it makes you want to keep reading. The plot is about two 13-year-old "trouble twins" named Dallas and Florida. They have been bouncing around from foster home to foster home. They have been living with Mr. and Mrs. Trepid--their mean foster parents. One day an older couple named Tiller and Sairy came to the Home. They decided to take Florida and Dallas to their home in beautiful Ruby Holler.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ruby Holler
Dallas and Florida, twin orphans, lived at the Boxton Creek Home most of their lives except for a few scarey foster homes. Now they are at a home in beautiful Ruby Holler with some verv nice foster parents named Tiller and Sairy who take them on amazing adventures! Kelsy, age 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a book that you'll enjoy while you're reading it, and feel good about afterward
Ruby Holler is the story of "the trouble twins", 13-year-old Dallas and Florida, who have spent their lives living in the dilapidated Boxton Creek Home. They've had many failed foster parent experiences, some terrifying, some grim, and they are very wary of adults. They remind me a bit of Tony and Tia Malone in Escape to Witch Mountain (another pair of twins who seem unable to keep out of trouble, and who no one seems to want).

3-0 out of 5 stars A Year Down Yonder
The Great Depression sounds like a dreary era to write a story about, but instead A Year Down Yonder, is packed full of exciting and funny adventures.Mary Alice is a fifteen year old girl from Chicago, in 1937, who goes to live with her Grandma Dowdel in a hick town in rural Illinois.Mary moves to her Grandma's house after her father lost his job during hard times due to the Depression. The move was challenging and uneasy at first. 2-0 out of 5 stars Amazing it's a Newbery Medal book
Ok, I usually find that Newberry Medal books are amazing children literature. But A Year Down Yonder sure wasn't. I thought it was boring, strange story that didn't make me laugh like I thought it would. I think Richard Peck could have made a really great, funny, enjoyable story out of the plot that he had. But unfortunately
